LOL...MacGyver was the reason I bought my first knife (SAK, of course) when I was a kid. That led to collecting knives and discovering bushcraft. Go MacGyver!

I like the scissors too. They’re great for cutting bandages, which would be more difficult with a knife, although doable too as a last resort. I like the Victorinox pliers too. They aren’t heavy duty but are great for smaller jobs. I always use them. For heavier duty jobs, there’s the Victorinox Swiss Tool.

I came here because here in NYC we would have swiss army knife. But I'm also here because of the encouragement from MacGyver and keeping my traditions in appreciating my grandfathers. Even if the knife is not close to saying swiss army knife. They taught me what is formal and not formal. Swiss army knife is my choice of tool and not my defenses. It can be a source of defense if I must improvise my environment.

I'm a big skeletool fan, myself. My favorite SAK is the explorer, it rides in my first aid tin in the car. The magnifier is great for splinters.

A magnifying glass would be a great tool to have. And if you say the skeletool is good, I believe it.

I've carried a Fieldmaster for 11 years now. I've hiked back several miles to retrieve it, it's survived many falls, and a few swims. But it's been with me through thick and thin. love that little knife! I need to get the scales replaced on it, and I snapped one of the flathead screwdriver/ bottle opener tools off of it.

I've had my Swiss Camper with me for over 40 years. It was with me across America, and in the US Navy for a year in Diego Garcia and then a Year in Antarctica. It is still with me here in New Zealand.
But I also love my Leathermans. I have a Wave and a Charge and love them both. I hope to get an Alox Swiss Farmer at some point for EDC pocket carry.

My EDC for years has been the Victorinox Climber until i discover the Boker Plus Tech 3. The pocket clip and the bigger, robust scissors from the Boker makes it my new favorite EDC now. Plus feels kinda stronger. Good review! Thanks for sharing.

Enjoyed both multitools. But I use the Leatherman line simply because I prefer a needle - nose plier on my EDC multitool. Simply a preference of mine. I enjoy your videos, keep up the good work.

Great video and good knives. Thanks. I EDC SAK Champion Plus 🔪 and it being 1 inch wide it is still hand and pocket friendly for me. It comes with all the tools the 1.3 inch wide SwissChamp has but the pliers. And when I want to be extra prepared I carry the 1 inch wide SAK CyberTool 34 with its pliers and bit driver in my other pocket. This is the best of both worlds for me as I do not have one big tool that is to bulky in the hand and pocket. I added the 🔥 Firefly ferro rod to both knives together with tweezers on one and a toothpick on the other. Plus I do not notice either SAK's in the pocket as I hang them with a light weight aluminum caribeaner and lanyard clipped to my belt loop dangling 1/2 way down my pocket and to the side leaving plenty of pocket space for my hands or anything else. And I also EDC carry at times when I want to be super extra prepared covering all the bases my Leatherman Rebar with the bit kit driver adapter cross carry on my belt. Lots of room left on the belt for a fixed blade 🔪 and other stuff for when I am in the woods.

I have Gerber brand multi-tools and love them for what I do when working on my auto's, lawn equipment, or for camping out. I love the saw on the Boker brand which you showed last and could use that tool myself if I don't have a working saw. I have the Extension NXT tools in my backpack, and in my EDC bag, and keep a larger Gerber multi-tool around home for working on my vehicles, lawn equipment, and for other work I have.

Another multi tool that you may like is the Victorinox Ranger. Has the wood saw and the scissors but had one additional tool that does not add lots of weight for the benefit. It has a file that will file wood and metal. The edge works like a hack saw.

I just picked up an older issue Victorinox Soldier. Great little knife. I agree on the scissors so my most carried SAK is the Climber. I do appreciate and use pliers quite often so my every-every day carry is the Leatherman Squirt PS4. Finally, the best compromise in size and function I have found is the Leatherman Juice CS4

  • @gorbash07

Victorinox Huntsman is my EDC.... The only difference with your fieldmaster is the presence of a cork screw (instead of a Philips screw driver) which I feel provides more functionality (since it can accommodate a "fireant" flintstone with tinder -for outdoor use, or a mini screw driver for my glasses). Thanks for this video.

  • @survivalcomms

Scissors have always been an imperative for me in a multi tool also. I have a Swisschamp and it is a proverbial pocket tool box but have always preferred the pliers on a leatherman (I am a big pliers user). I EDC a leatherman wave in a pouch I made out of bridle leather. It's all about the individual and what works for them. Thanks for sharing !

Well I hate having bulk in my pockets aswell and that's why I carried my feild master in my change/watch pocket of my jeans for the last 3 years it fits perfectly my true pockets are always open and I never even notice it's there till I need it ... That being said I just got the victorinox handyman and carry it the same exact way !! And still never notice it!! Many would put it on there belt and that I would. Notice and not care for ..put you to sak in your watch pocket of your jeans and you'll never carry it a other way or want to I promise

Love the vid, as usual. Great information, and I appreciate your perspective. The one thing that the Leatherman Wave has that the SAKs don't is the ability to open the blade with one hand. That is huge for me. It's not as comfortable to hold as the SAKs, but most of my EDC tasks are pretty quick. It's not like I'm going to carve a spoon with it.

Hi Krik, as always an interesting and informative video. I totally agree with your views on pocket and belt clutter. Like me you sound as if you've grown up with Victorinox knives, they cover all the bases in day to day life. I recently purchased a Boker Tech Tool single blade knife and was amazed at the similarity in quality with the Victorinox, really superb I also live in the UK where our knife carry laws make choice quite limited so these two brands tick all the boxes. Cheers.

As a knife maker and lover of knives and EDC, I think that you would like the Huntsman more than the fieldmaster, the phillips head is nice, but the cork screw can be used not only to open wine (which is always a part of camping/hunting trips) but is very very useful in untying knots in rope/paracord.... just my 2 cents. I carry a fixed blade that I forged, a camper and a manager on my normal days, but change it up depending on what I'm doing that day.

I carry a Wenger Rangergrip 78. I was interested in the one-handed opening, liner lock with a pushbutton safety in the "+" emblem on the handle, and about the largest sawblade of any swiss army knife type tool. I added a pocket clip which I borrowed from another knife. Had to remove the scales, drill holes, use #6 or #4 bolt and nut which were epoxied on the inside, and replaced the scales with a little epoxy. They are press fit and once removed, then can be a little loose.
Recently though, I started to carry in my non-woods environment, a Leatherman Surge black oxide. I work in an office and frequently use either a screw driver or often would like to have a decent pair of pliers. Both are excellent tools and each fills a niche. Oh, on the Leatherman, it has the ability to accept T-shank sabre saw blades - any kind or length. So I carry it with a small metal cutting (hacksaw) blade, but carry a 3" wood saw blade in the holder in the sheath. the Leatherman is a super versatile tool.

Leatherman charge tti for me personally.... Way worth the price for some real decent steel s30v, that stays super sharp longer than all the blades on both the knives in this video combined... Plus scissors, saw, bastard file/diamond file, serrated blade, gut hook, ruler, flat head, Phillips, pry bar, eye glass screwdriver and of course pliers and crimper!! Leatherman charge tti is the ultimate outdoors tool for me, the saw is amazing better than my victorinox saw, and I use the bastard pip file all the time way more than I ever thought I would, plus can sharpen other tools/knives with the fine diamond file side....

A plier with at least soft wire cutting ability IS in fact invaluable (mostly for bending wire and thin metal) in my experience--It does NOT need to be big though. That's where pairing the edc pocket knife with a forget-that-it's-there micro like the fabulous Gerber Vise comes in: Sturdy enough to bend and cut electrical wire and even light chicken wire fencing, yet fine enough to be a tweezer, plus an effective small philips for small screws and especially the tiny flathead for glasses tightening that doubles as a very good leather awl. Small but effective Razor sharp straight AND serrated blades for emergency use round out the package enough to manage without the pocket knife in the woods if you had to.

I prefer the "retired" SAK Harvester (a version of the Alox Farmer but the can opener is removed to allow a 2nd unique blade, the pruner... a hawkbill design that is great for pull, draw cuts that comprise a large percentage of my cutting tasks. The SAK Field master does see pocket time when I believe may be needing scissors.... wish Victornoix would come out with a Harvester X, add scissors to the Alox with saw/awl combo..
Another unique option I use is the "retired" Leathetman Juice KF4, besides having the pliers, have two blades (straight and serrated) plus the wood saw, Awl, and a nice file, but also no scissors.

    I have the Boker Plus 01BO806 Tech-Tool City 4 Multi-Tool.
Not sure why they gave it this name, as it does not have 4 tools as you can see by reading the specifications below.
It really only lacks a Phillips screwdriver, which I really don't use that much, or in the woods,
The Phillips is available with all of the other tools referenced below, on the City 5, and/or the Outdoor 5 models, but those models have no saw, so I would rather have the saw.
I have looked, and I don't think that Boker makes a multi-tool that has the saw, with a Phillips, and all of the other tools referenced below.
I picked this tool up brand new for $29.99, about $20.00 under retail.
Here are the specs in case you are interested:
With black G10 handle scales. The hollow ground stainless steel blade
made of 12C27 Sandvik is accompanied by these tools (4Cr13): Glass
breaker, flat screwdriver with cap lifter and wire stripper, small
serrated blade with flat screwdriver, cork screw, lanyard hole,
scissors, stitching awl, pliers, wood saw, clip. Open length 6 4/7".
Blade length 2 4/5". Blade thickness 0.1". Weight 6.3 oz.

This is really nice sheath for the swiss army knife but what makes it nice that it doesn't need to have a clip / button or scotch in order to put it inside and close the sheath on it.
I like the victorinox huntsman more than the fieldmaster becasue this one cannot hold the mini screw driver which is important to me and corkscrew can be used to untied knots .
Anyway which one you choose is excellent choice because it has all the important tools you use in the wood , especially the wood saw which is amazing.

Surprised you didn’t compare the blade steel differences between the two tools. Which is better and holds its edge longer? 🤔
That Victorinox sheath you have, makes it easily pickable buy a pickpocket, even though it might be a tight fit. And if it ever gets loose, it could just fall out someplace. I’d rather have one with a cover and snap, or a latch like the other one you have.

Thanks Black Owl. A really good exploration of two excellent tools. As you rightly say, you get the tool that suits your needs and requirements. However, the tendency (a natural one) is for 'overkill.' That is to say, you like to see yourself as a MacGyver who can deal with every eventuality. You then get the tool to match this perceived and often exaggerated view of reality.I certainly did. As a consequence I carried Leathermans: (Supertool 200, Crunch, Charge Ti) and the much lamented Kershaw A100C. I had bit adaptors, bits, you name it. Sometimes my belt rivalled that of Batman (although I never actually carried a can of the anti-shark spray as seen in the film!)This was starting to get silly. So, I thought, time for a 'tool audit.' What do I actually need? What do I actually use? How much weight do I need to carry? This involves looking in the shaving mirror and realising that you are not MacGyver, or James Bond, and that much of the stuff is really about as useful as the anti-shark spray referred to above.I live on a farm, consider myself and outdoorsman; make repairs (who doesn't on a farm) and yet, work in the city.Like you, I realised that I really didn't need the pliers. If I wanted decent pliers I was far better off dipping into the tool box. I proper adjustable spanner (Monkey Wrench to you) will always be preferable to the multitool version.I didn't need the weight of a great big multitool.I needed scissors of a decent size and Swiss Army Knife scissors are bigger than virtually anything you will find of a Gerber or a Leatherman or a SOG etc.I like and use the tweezers, the toothpick (more often than you would think). I even use the excellent magnifying glass that SAKs provide.Yet best of all, no one beats SAKS when it comes to the tool you use most: The main blade. It is 57 Rockwell, is stainless and is very easy to keep scalpel-sharp. There simply is nothing sharper on the market. That is why you don't need a serrated blade on a SAK. The blades provided simply cut through everything.So. Audit over; realism re-imposed. Batman pouches put away; Leathermans etc stored in glove compartment of car etc.Best of all, in the UK, SAKs are 'legal carry,' whereas the plier-based multitools are (with no exception that I can think of) are not.End of the day: Each to his own. Thanks again.

Great video as always! I use a leatherman surge or signal combined with a bigger opinel 254040 saw. Did you check out the new condor stuff? The Condor Swamp Romper looks great! See you soon. Julius

I always like the Victorinox awl, but I don't like how it operates like a T-handle. I think a longer awl coming from the end of the knife would be extra handy.

I would only buy either a Gerber, or Leatherman multi-tool due to their quality and the Schrade is probably made in China. I have two Gerber multi-tools and love them and have a third one on order. The Schrade is probably made in China like many other cheaper tools. If you get something cheap don't expect much out of them.

Man I do believe I carry at least 8 x that weight on my waist every other day. No judgement though Bro. I might start on the smaller multitool sometime soon. Leathermans can prove a bit /lot bulky. it's great to see old companies tackling new ideas. 👍

My definition of a "multi-tool" is a tool that includes pliers.
    Especially in an urban environment.
The pliers on my Leatherman get as much use as the knife blade...

Wouldn't it make sense to remove the pocket clip on the Boker since you are carrying it in a sheath? It would slim it down a bit and make it easier for and out use with it's sheath?

Like your choices and I too have the fieldmaster. In thr Uk the swiss army multi tools have a big advantage over leatherman in that they are legal carry as blades do not lock.. On leatherman they do . Thanks for sharing . A.t.b. Vee

Military issue, because of decent quality/price ratio, dont get me wrong i have one too and like it the sliding pliers are nice, but for harder use Leatherman is better and swisstool even better.

There was a different Victorinox German Army knife before now discontinued, the civilian version was called the Safari.

I think if you like these two multitools, you would also consider the Victorinox Outrider. I believe you can find it in red or black. I've owned one for almost a year now and it goes in one of my pouches. Great, solid set of tools. The wood saw works incredibly well. It includes scissors, a unique Phillips hidden under the scissors, w/extended reach. Includes typical awl and corkscrew as well. It is a bit longer, 111mm, but not overly bulky. Plus the blade is locking. I think it's a perfect size for pocket or belt carry. Also like my Swiss Army One-Hand Trekker and Leatherman Wingman. However, the wingman has no wood saw. Lots of interesting options out there. Good video! Take care-

+Black Owl Outdoors The outrider is an excellent model for the type of videos you do and the functions you noted you couldn't go without. I wish I could send ya mine to review. That would be fun. I could certainly picture you in those incredible woods you're always lurking in, making a notch in some wood, drilling, bushcraft...oh yeah. Seems like paradise. Great sound and camera quality always too. One of my favorite channels! Cheers-

Krik-when you wet-molded the sheath for the Fieldmaster, did you make a wood blank the size of the knife? Or did you use the knife itself while the leather was drying? I want to make one but I'm new at wet-molding. Thanks, & great work!

  • @nicktravels
    @nicktravels 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Love the videos Krik. Question: Does the clip on the Boker knife feel uncomfortable in your hand when using it? Seems like that would cause a hotspot or feel weird. If it does, would reversing the clip to the other side help?

How about my EDC? A Leatherman surge? Yea it's not going to work for you but I love it.
I struggle with learning knots via reading, videos, or tissues guides. But your channel has helped my in the past when other places wouldn't. For that I thank you. More specifically the clove hitch, you taught me that. Yes it's not technically a knot (pun not intended) but I hope you cover more knots in the future.
