Thanks man. I've recently got back into the hobby (after a 20 years hiatus) and your tutorials have been the best I've encountered for painting Blood Angels. This video helped me get things going and the Sanguianry Guard video has been an absolute god send.
just bought the starter box of blood angels yesterday, going to give this technique a go this weekend. the highlighting I'll have to do later as I don't have those shades yet! cheers for the video, you have a new sub!
Excellent tutorial! inspired me to begin a Blood Angel army, your Death Skull Ork tutorial is also another fantastic piece of work and is what I am currently basing my models off of! Keep up the great videos
Your style is very crisp and clean, it's very impressive. When I paint B;old Angels I end up with blobs of ink, or chalky highlights, I'm very jealous if folks (like you) that can paint cleanly. Thanks for the vid too!
I added your address to our local gaming store's physical dry board so people can access your technique on how to paint their armies! Thanks for your outstanding effort!
I don't like loyalist marines in general. Let me rephrase that. I like them but I dont want to play them... yet. I don't dislike them. But the dramatic background of the death of their primarch, the red thirst and the close combat oriented tactics with assault marines, death company and furioso dreadnaughts make me kinda like them a bit more. To me they are a bit up there with the space wolves. Space wolves are silly in my opinion. Cool but silly. Thanks for the comment :)
TheApatheticFish Hey fish! What army do you play and what is your favourite army? I have recently started collecting tau because I like the look at them and I like the way they play in the game.
havnt painted space marines in 5 years, though played the games, and read the lore, i decided to make a clay model of a space marine (the head is roughly the size of a dreadnought xD) using the same painting scheme, the video was helpful, thanks
This is just a personal little bit of advice that I found looks really good on the blood angles - Just pain the trim of the pauldrons in a dark (ish) grey colour and it looks really good!
I am going to use your tips and techniques for my next painting project, which is to paint my Space Hulk Blood Angel Terminators and the Genestealers as well. Thanks for the help.
Hi TheApatheticFish I love your video tutorials and your painting is great! Im new to the Scene and trying to finish up my army as I just found a few players in my area finally. I like the way you paint the blood angels but Im looking for a little more grittier, more bloody red look. Any suggestions? Also, could you please tell me how you go about cleaning and caring for your brushes? Thanks and keep those great videos coming!
This colour scheme almost looks like a good blood raven scheme. Maybe using agrax earthshade as the wash and/or basing with rhinox hide to make it a little orangey/darker.
Its a nice tutorial! The only thing I feel is lacking is how vibrant the red color on this marine is... I think you should have glazed some thinned VGC Red Ink over the armour, makes the armor and the whole mini pop a whole lot more on the tabletop.
Your mephiston red on the model looks very bright, is it due to the source of heavy light? Mine looks quite dark. Over white basecoat I paint two layers of meph red, then carrison burg wash into recesses, then I again meph red to clean up, later edge highlights with evil sun red.
Zatiltax I like Behemoth too. I have a realistic version of hive fleet behemoth tutorial. I did want to do the other but GW released a tutorial not so long ago and I don't want to look like I'm copying them.
i love your videos, i just personally feel like i get lost in all the details on the blood angel units because of how many details they have. I usually paint IG and they are so much easier to do.
Great tutorial fish, I am getting g some tau and I have a dark blue colour scheme but to me it doesnt feel complete. So could you maybe do a tutorual on some fire warriors with a dark blue ish colour scheme, thanks again for a great tutorial
This is a question probably answered before, but how do you paint the feathers on the chest of the marine with the gun in the way ? Same question for the backpack
Redat23 Just gotta get in there with the brush and touch up later. I usually use a worn or older brush because you really gotta work the brush into some places.
Hello, Amazing guide and exactly my paint scheme. However, could you give me some advice on how to shade vehicles? I worry the shade will pool across the larger, flat areas of say, a Rhino and would not look great. Do you just thin it down to like a glaze or do you just spot shade the recesses? Thanks a ton.
Hi, loved the vid, my local store said that a can of Meth Red would work as a primer, would you recommend then skipping the painting of meth red or would you do a coat of that still aswell, once again love the vid
Mephiston red! yeah you can use the colored spray and it will hold well. I thought GW marketed them as only paint and not primer but I've used it before straight on to plastic and it seemed to work well
Awesome vid. Im getting back into painting after several years of absence and your tutorial vids are inspiring. What do you use for the base of the model? To make it look like theres gravl/dust on the ground?
Hey, awesome tutorial! Thanks a ton! Just wondering if you did the helmet camera lens the same as the eye lens and what colors you used if not? It looks so real!
Was it not awkward to paint the chest piece with the bolter already attracted? I'm painting my first squad of blood angels and fully assembled them and now I'm seriously regretting putting the bolsters on
I like to glue the model after it is painted. Just use some masking tape where you want to add the glue. I also use airbrush and spray cans to save time on base coats. To hold small individual parts, I glue them to birthday cake candle holders. They are cheap enough and a good tool to have.
Just a question: why do you use White Scar for the reflective dot on the eye instead of Ceramite White? I am not a very experienced painter so if somebody would answer me that would be great.
Is there an alternative to Mephiston red? It is way too expensive trying to build Blood Angels. I would also rather have it in a drop bottle so I can get it in the airbrush more easily. P.S. I tried using Vallejo red but it is a pinker color
Hey AF, two questions: 1) What do you use to thin metallic paints? I tried the Slow-Dri and really didn't like the results. 2) The first wash step (the Carroburg Crimson in this case) how many coats/how thick do you put that on? I've never had much luck with washes and I'm wondering if I'm not using enough. Thanks!
John Kozempel 1) With metallics actually the slow-dri is what i liked best. When I was painting my defiler I hated that my paint became tacky super fast and very annoying to work with. when I thinned Leadbelcher with it and it was awesome. granted if you use too much you will lose opacity and may need a couple of coats. You may be using too much or maybe it just doesn't work for you. the thing is Metallic paint becomes tacky fast and if you thin down with just water the metallic flakes of the paint separate and the paint properties change. You can try lamian medium instead from citadel but I think it's going to be pretty much the same thing. try decreasing the ratio of slow-dri to paint. 2) The washes are just one coat and it's very fast. I think the problem is that you are not shaking well the pot. if you don't give it a good shake the medium and pigment separate inside your wash pot and you end up painting your model with only medium and no color. this is very annoying but try to shake the hell out of your washes before using them. Let me know if this helps
TheApatheticFish Hi, I wanted to ask you about point 2 and the shade, do you use this straight from the pot or do you add a thinner to it as well? Thanks
Rex Major I may not be TheApatheticFish, but I can tell you from experience that it is a bad idea to thin washes at all, but do control how much you load up in the brush, as if you apply too much, it will look awful.
Okay guys, I'm trying to get into Warhammer 40k miniature painting, but I'm having some difficulty understanding some of it. One of the newer sets, named "Space Marine Battleforce" (the one that includes a dreadnought), has Ultramarines on the box art. Does this mean that one should paint this set as Ultramarines or can I paint them as another chapter? And if I am considering painting a Blood Angel set, should I specifically buy the "Blood Angels Battleforce"? Thanks in advance
The ultramarines are the poster boys for the space marines. They can be painted however you like and should get the transfers for the other marine chapters.
Yeah - man. Ultra marines are just the favourite Marine Chapter of Games Workshop, that's all. Peraonally I freakin hate the frickin Ultra Morons! just coz they're made out to be the perfect little sucker boys of the Imperium... They're not even the first chapter ever founded; (that honour goes to my Chapter The Dark Angels apparently and I didn't even know this when I chose them as the Space marine Chapter for me. I also initially liked The Crimson Fists Chapter when I first became interested in the hobby and they were the prominent Chapter of Marines used in the pages of the original so called; "Rogue Trader," edition of the Warhammer 40'000/ 40K rule book back when it was a big thick hundred or so page book , and The Blood angels seemed a popular Chapter too at the time. They're actually my brother's Chapter of choice as it happens.
There is some in-universe justification for it too. The Ultramarines were always the largest legion and by the end of the Heresy made up the vast majority of the loyalist survivors. This is one of the reasons that there's so many Ultramarines successors. Plus their Primarch basically ruled the Imperium in the period of rebuilding that followed.
No.... you can paint them as whatever chapter you like. My chosen chapter is The Dark Angels so even I could get that set and paint them all as Dark Angels. I just need to paint Dark Angels badges on their shooulder pads or apply Dark Angel transfers if I'm lazy, which I probably am , so I'll probably try and use as many tranfers as I can, but even that's a bit of an effort. lolz
HeimdallrAsgard whenever you load your brush and adjust the paint you've loaded into the brush you can drag and spin the brush at the same time to form the tip. you can do it whenever the tip spreads or when you are loading paint. hope this helps
After I have primed with Army Painter Dragon red and after applying carroburg crimson do I then clean up with Mephiston Red or Army painter's Dragon red?
U know how u get like ultra marines and dark angels and blood angels e.c.t. well ive came up with my own group of soilders called the dark abyse and i was wondering if it sounds cool or not plz give rating from 1-10 thank u :)
GamerEly Make sure your paint pot is not too old. it may have chunks of dry paint. that happens to me sometimes too. Try an acrylic thinner. you can use the one I recomend in this video or any one you like and make sure that when you mix it with your paint in your pallet that the mix is smooth. If its smooth but it leaves lumps on your miniature it may be the case that you are not letting your paint dry before applying multiple coats. When you paint an area and its drying if you go ahead and give it a second coat you can break the drying layer and it becomes lumps of paint or crumbs. Paint the model in quick layers and make sure to let it dry befor applying more. Hope this helps
ManueN I don't necesarily use the best brushes. I use the brushes that I have available. I use a monster brush from army painter for basecoating large areas, I use a size 2 kolinsky or any sable 2 brush for basecoating and general layering. The fine tip of a sable 2 brush works with details to an extent. I use a fine detail brush for details like eyes and edge highlights. A large brush from citadel for washes and a drybrush from armypainter. There are better quality brushes that you can get but I haven't had the money to upgrade.
To each his own but I've never subscribed to the "assemble and then paint" method. There are just too many details that you can't accurately reach with your brush once the model is assembled that can still be seen. I always paint, assemble, paint some more, assemble a little more and then finish it off. Just my preferred method.
How do you assemble once you've painted though, does the glue dissolve through the paint? I thought the plastic glue was meant to join the two parts together that way
I think all the comment sections on the official Games Workshop "Warhammer TV," tutorials is because they're afraid of negative comments. Which frankly doesn't surprise me considering the contempt GW has for its clientel and the way they systematically alienate their customer base. Ther video tutorials are very patronising and seem like they're made for a five year old too, which I don't think wargaming models are really suitable for? lolz.... If I recall , once upon a time Citadel minis. weren't recomended for those under 16 years of age; funny how times have changed; innit.... lmfao - ...........
Pardon my blithering stupidity and ignorance, but why does the painter in this tutorial have blobs of paint all over his thumb nail?? I think I've seen it somewhere before and It's probably a well established practice among mini. painters. But I can't remember why? Thanks dudes.
I use my fingernail to adjust the amount of paint on the brush or to adjust the point to make fine lines. You can do it anywhere but my nail is close and quick not allowing the paint to dry as much while doing it.
ahah... Thank's for that, I knoew there was a good reason . Like I said , I've seen that many other painters do it but i just wasn't sure why; so it's basicly a substitute for a pant pallet to wipe off excess paint on to. Thank's very much. Happy painting.
Thanks man. I've recently got back into the hobby (after a 20 years hiatus) and your tutorials have been the best I've encountered for painting Blood Angels. This video helped me get things going and the Sanguianry Guard video has been an absolute god send.

Excellent tutorial! inspired me to begin a Blood Angel army, your Death Skull Ork tutorial is also another fantastic piece of work and is what I am currently basing my models off of! Keep up the great videos

probably one of the better blood angels tutorials.. how long did it take?
My only suggestion is to rotate the model after each step. Otherwise perfect. I still use this video for reminders now and again.
Got to say, good paint job, and helpful, clear tutorial. Thanks!
Blood Angels are Not my favourite chapter, But Never the less the tutorials is just as always some Great stuff.

This is just a personal little bit of advice that I found looks really good on the blood angles - Just pain the trim of the pauldrons in a dark (ish) grey colour and it looks really good!
i usually USE korne red with a scade for a dark base AND next i stratif it but your tecnic with mefiston red is awesome! :)
You sir are a Master. I enjoy your videos though I have ceased painting long ago. But you make me want to start again :)
Very nice paintjob. Thanks for sharing.
Very nice blood angel. Thanks for sharing.
I am going to use your tips and techniques for my next painting project, which is to paint my Space Hulk Blood Angel Terminators and the Genestealers as well. Thanks for the help.
Excellent tutorial mate
Thanks so much Nick!
Awesome Tutorial! Learned a few things for when I start painting my Blood Angel army in two weeks. :)
awesome paint job! i would like to see a flesh tearers tutorial soon
very good and helpful tutorial
this was really simple to follow, thanks 😊
Cool work as always.
Can you do a tutorail for Sanguinary Guard too? greetings
Thank you this was really helpful for a beginner like me.
That, that is fawkin' perfect.

good work 👌 tks for the video , cool and long life 🤘😉👍
great painting!
Great tutorial! The only thing that I would do different is spray the space marine with mephiston red instead of grey
I would love to watch you paint a blood angels terminator or blood angel specific unit
You should try kindle flame for a dry brush
I have this model AND the red u used (and Leadbelcher)
Its a nice tutorial! The only thing I feel is lacking is how vibrant the red color on this marine is... I think you should have glazed some thinned VGC Red Ink over the armour, makes the armor and the whole mini pop a whole lot more on the tabletop.
thanks your tutorials helped me heaps (starting to like painting now ) have liked and subscribed) :-)
Your mephiston red on the model looks very bright, is it due to the source of heavy light?
Mine looks quite dark.

great tutorial ... im copying this right now :)
Great paint job! Could you by any change do any more tyranid paint jobs for the next or future videos?
Zatiltax I can't really affford big tyranid models at the moment. but I can do small troops. What hive fleet did you have in mind?
i like behemoth the most. any troop would be helpfull at this point. raveners, genestealers, rippers, gaunts.
Zatiltax I like Behemoth too. I have a realistic version of hive fleet behemoth tutorial. I did want to do the other but GW released a tutorial not so long ago and I don't want to look like I'm copying them.
helped heaps thanks
mars bars are you painting some Blood Angels?
i love your videos, i just personally feel like i get lost in all the details on the blood angel units because of how many details they have. I usually paint IG and they are so much easier to do.
would i be able to use nuln oil or agrax earthshade
Great tutorial fish, I am getting g some tau and I have a dark blue colour scheme but to me it doesnt feel complete. So could you maybe do a tutorual on some fire warriors with a dark blue ish colour scheme, thanks again for a great tutorial
Another great video. Do you think you could try your hand at a pre-heresy Emperor's Children?
Thanks!
Two questions: What ratios do you use to thin your pains, and the washes do you thin those?
Can you paint a space marine dreadnaught please
Thanks for another tutorial :)
Paint more blood Angels! Like an HQ, drop pod, storm Raven. Please and thank youz
This is a question probably answered before, but how do you paint the feathers on the chest of the marine with the gun in the way ? Same question for the backpack

+BronnJBA Take a finer brush and shade the crevices and raised points like bolts.
+TheGreatUG Thank you. I will give that a try.
Thanks for the vid

Hey! how do you attach the minuture to the old paint pot? great video! insperational!
Very nice. Any chance you could do Plague Marines for a next or future video?
Purdius Prime I do want to paint something nurgle recently. I don't have any nurgle models right now though. If I get the chance I will
Top man. Looking forward to when you do :)
doesn't show how he painted the back of the gun ,or the models chest plate?
Hey man, could you go into further detail about edge highlighting the shoulder pads. i just can't get those lines right,
Hey, awesome tutorial! Thanks a ton! Just wondering if you did the helmet camera lens the same as the eye lens and what colors you used if not? It looks so real!
Excellent!!!! :)
I’m subbing
I use that spray
Thank you very much for the tutorial! Why do you recomment Dragon Red as spray primer and not Pure Red?
what did you use for the mouth part
Is there an alternative to Mephiston red? It is way too expensive trying to build Blood Angels. I would also rather have it in a drop bottle so I can get it in the airbrush more easily. P.S. I tried using Vallejo red but it is a pinker color
Vallejo Game Color Heavy Red is pretty close.
nice

Im curious can youl get the automotive primer in Australia, i looked on their official store and couldn't find it. Cheers
I really want you to redo your space wolves video.
Winter Blanket I agree. I wasn't totally happy with it and I think there might be a better way of painting space wolves.
TheApatheticFish and a renewed version of the dark angels would be awesome.
nice tutorial :)
Thanks Faron! Thanks for the comment! :)
When you're applying the evil suns scarlet to the shoulder pad, do you edge both sides of the "rim" of the shoulder?
Try to edge both sides if you cant you can highlight the whole thing. just try your best.

1 up for finger pallet :)
What brushes do you buy? Any brush I buy I find gets all bushy and crappy after just one or a few uses.
See I feel like I'm being incredibly gentle but they always end up splitting up. idk, I'll try to be even more gentle but that's pretty hard!
HeimdallrAsgard whenever you load your brush and adjust the paint you've loaded into the brush you can drag and spin the brush at the same time to form the tip. you can do it whenever the tip spreads or when you are loading paint. hope this helps
Where can you get the retarder and primer?
What type of brush do you use? Thanks!
After I have primed with Army Painter Dragon red and after applying carroburg crimson do I then clean up with Mephiston Red or Army painter's Dragon red?
Albert you can use either. They are very similar and over the wash either would look fine
Thank you for the reply. I'm new to painting miniatures and WH40k so your tutorial is helping me so much.
U know how u get like ultra marines and dark angels and blood angels e.c.t. well ive came up with my own group of soilders called the dark abyse and i was wondering if it sounds cool or not plz give rating from 1-10 thank u :)
Sean Smeaton you can’t make your own faction. And what does abyse mean?
3/10
what tune is that at the start ??? :)
Hitman from Kevin Mcleod. The credits are in the description :)
I have a lot of issue using red. It coagulates or something where it becomes a glob.
GamerEly Make sure your paint pot is not too old. it may have chunks of dry paint. that happens to me sometimes too. How do you assemble once you've painted though, does the glue dissolve through the paint? I thought the plastic glue was meant to join the two parts together that way
Patrick McGlynn take a wine cork stick a paper clip in it, glue with super glue part you want to paint separate to the clip, then paint
How do you use the retardant?
Mix it with your paint at around 15-20% if you use more it may take very long to dry
+TheApatheticFish is this the retardant you used?

I use my fingernail to adjust the amount of paint on the brush or to adjust the point to make fine lines. You can do it anywhere but my nail is close and quick not allowing the paint to dry as much while doing it.
ahah... Thank's for that, I knoew there was a good reason . Like I said , I've seen that many other painters do it but i just wasn't sure why; so it's basicly a substitute for a pant pallet to wipe off excess paint on to. Thank's very much. Happy painting.
