Don't worry this song will not spoil anything in regards to the Hobbit movies. Originally this is a poem from the first book "The Lord of the Rings, the Fellowship of the Ring" which is sung by Gimli during the Fellowship's journey through Moria in the chapter " A Journey in the Dark"(Moria means "The Black Chasm/Pit" and was known as Khazad-dûm "Dwarves' Mansion" before its fall. It was the grandest and most famous of the mansions/cities of the Dwarves. It fell to orcs and the Balrog as you saw in the first movie.).
It is sung by the dwarves in remembrance of stories of old. A time of splendour and wonder for their people. Therefore it references events from the First and Second Age of the world. It speaks of the time when Durin I(also known as Durin the Deathless) first wandered the world. He was the eldest of the Seven Father's of the Dwarves, founder of Khazad-dûm and first King of Durin' folk- which means one of the seven dwarven people also known as the Longbeards.
As stated in the during Durin's days the world was full of splendour and beauty. Under him the dwarves flourished and build a kingdom under the mountains unlike any other. Since then the dwarves believe that Durin I will be reborn seven times and reign as king. Especially the last four lines are interesting:
But still the sunken stars appear
    In dark and windless Mirrormere;
There lies his crown in water deep,
Till Durin wakes again from sleep.
Mirrormere is a lake in a dale close to Moria's East-gate. It is said Durin I looked down in it and saw a crown above his head, being the reflection of stars above which he saw as a sign and founded Khazad-dûm there. The Fellowship passes this lake on their way out of Moria(which is sadly not shown in the movies).
Since the song is very relevant for dwarvish history it is not entirely irrelevant for the Hobbit movies because the dwarves in that movie belong to Durin's folk and one of them is directly related to Durin I. There are many tales and poems that are directly linked to the story and this one is no exception.
If you enjoyed this cover and the song in general, I would highly recommend the renditions of Clamavi de Profundis. They arrange the many poems and songs from Tolkine's works into beautiful pieces of music. It is a great way to learn about Tolkien's legendarium without actually reading the books(even if I would highly recommend it; especially because the songs/poems will have greater impact then) since these poems depict events within the story much like myth and tales were told in real human history. None of these poems actually spoil anything but can help add to the atmosphere. Relevant for the Hobbit movies are the songs: "Song of Durin", "The King Beneath the Mountains" and "Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold".

I don't recall where I read it, but doesn't Gimli revisit this lake with Legolas at one point?

Jonathan was literally reading the lyrics and recording as he was filming, he gave absolutely zero Fs and it was perfect because he's Jonathan Young.

Oh, his RANGE isn't what's impressive. It's that timbre. That cavernous sound that makes everyone call bs when he says that came out of him and not an editor program. Not to mention his control. Guy's a machine when it comes to technique: perfect placement and length on vibrato, knows exactly which vocal technique to to employ where for the greatest effect, etc.

Clamavi De Profundis is the band that wrote this tune. They are nerds who do choral arrangements of Tolkien poems and other fantasy stuff. They're awesome!

Mirrormere is a version of a real-world phenomenon. Tolkien saw a lake in Switzerland, dark and windless, as in the song, and the stars were visible during the daytime in that lake.
We even have a few lakes like that in the Rockies.

As a lifelong Tolkien fan I love how these voices so perfectly project the tone of his writings. What amazing voices. How perfect for the task.

Two recommendations for Colm's music "Roll Northumbria" and "Spanish Ladies." Both are fantastic sea shanties.

The Song of Durin is recited by Gimli in the the book The Fellowship of the Ring after the Fellowship escapes from the mines of Moria and he when he takes the Hobbits to Miramir to show them the Stone of Durin

This is a cover of the poem written by Tolkien himself, found in "The Felowship of the Ring." The music was composed by another group here on TH-cam Clamavi de Profundis, so this isn't from any movie. Please check out the original group. Clamavi de Profundis is very well known for setting Tolkien's poems to music. I recommend the songs "The Battle of Sauron and Finrod Felagund," this one of course, "Namarie," and "The Song of Beren and Luthien."
As others have said, No spoilers here. This is a cultural/history song for the Dwarves. They basically believe that the original king named Durin sort of comes back every now and then in a new king.

Durin was the first Dwarf. The is a song about the origins of the Dwarves and about how Kahad-za-dum (palace of the dwarves) has degraded into Moria (the pit) and how one day Durin will return (he get reincarnated periodically).

Luckily for you the fall of Durin takes place many years before both The Hobbit and LoTR. The Balrog was the end of Moria because the dwarves awoke him as they continued to mine deeper into the depths of the mountain. So in your viewing of LoTR you saw them liberate Moria from Balrog.

Unpopular opinion: the crazy tone changes in this version takes away from the song itself. I think it's a beautiful poem/song on its own, but these guys just kind of make it about their unnecessarily deep (for the song) voices.
