    I thought that episode was a figment of my imagination as I saw it once and never again. Thank you for validating me 30plus years later

    Honey I Shrunk the Kids came out the same year, I assume that's where all the shrunk references came from.

    I distinctly remember this special. I was disappointed when a live-action sitcom invaded cartoon land, but here we are.
    I watched a lot of those shows. The Alf cartoons were weird and fun. Camp Candy had the best theme song. I don't remember the Smurfs having a pink Triceratops.
    I wanted to say I've been watching a bunch of your videos lately and think they are great. Well done. *Boom Mic*

    This was a few years before TNBC block was created in 1992 during the 4th season of Saved by the Bell. TNBC 1992-2002 RIP.

    I remember seeing the ad in TV Guide but don't think I ever watched it back then. I want to say this would have aired in August 1989.

    How sad is it that out of everything you mentioned in this review, I still think the special's biggest crime was ignoring Kissyfur (12:30 PM Eastern/11:30 AM Central & Pacific). Yes, it was reruns but it was still part of the lineup just like the rest of the shows were. That's just not cool, guys.

    I know i am over thinking this but how does the truancy officer know every student and who their friends are? And if Zach et al were due to be at school, wouldn't that mean even when they showed up later, they would still be in trouble for missing class? And if school hadn't started, why are Kelly and Jessie in class and why is the officer so concerned about students that aren't even late yet? These deep dives send me down some rabbit holes.

    • @savedbythebelldeepdives
      @savedbythebelldeepdives  18 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yeah, I never understood the power wielded by Ms. Bagwind. They clearly missed several classes - they were already truant!

    • @theultimaterental
      @theultimaterental 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ Lol yea…also for every name they come up with using someone from the production team they also come up with a ridiculous one. I’m sure Ms. Bagwind was someone saying let’s call her Ms. Windbag but not so obvious. Or, what did you have at lunch? A muffin and a glass of sangria you say?

      @savedbythebelldeepdives I guess the Naval officer look was in style back then. I remember Michael Jackson and MC Hammer wearing those jackets. Idk about the dogs though. Was she going to track them down? Sick them on kids for being late? The whole thing is weird.

    I don't think it's fair to call The Chipmunks "garbage". Despite the cheesy cover versions of pop songs, it introduced children to a variety of classic music that they may not have been aware of otherwise. They're also one of the oldest successful anthropomorphic animal teams that easily adapted to modern times.
    Once the 90s version of The Chipmunks hit, they started using original songs written specifically for the show, and it got even better.

    • @savedbythebelldeepdives
      @savedbythebelldeepdives  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm afraid that I'm going to stand by my garbage stance. But, I will also acknowledge that I am one man whose opinion is only given any sort of credit because I put that opinion in a video that is difficult to counter. So, I hereby accept your rebuttal, declare it as valid, and applaud you for speaking out.

    First time I've heard of Spacecats, even though I watched Sat Morn cartoons regularly back in 1991. I guess it was garbage too. Wishkid only stood out because it starred Macaulay Culkin so when he grew out of kid stardom it was forgotten pretty quick.

  • @TheRetroGuy2000

    Enjoyed the deep dive. Yes, this SBTB preview was weird, but I suspect a good portion of NBC's executives and staff writers were coked out when this was written. It certainly explains the ALF cartoon series. As you say, it's crazy that this preview's producers managed to get comedy legend John Candy. Too bad they wasted him on this preview instead of a real episode of the show!
    I remember the Snuggle bear with fondness.

    The demise of Saturday mornings on the Peacock 🦚 (NBC) network could be considered a perfect storm of:
    1) NBC relying too long on five cartoons (The Smurfs, The Snorks, Alvin and the Chipmunks 🐿 , ALF and until it moved to ABC on September 9, 1989; Adventures of the Gummi Bears) *as their heavy hitters.*
    2) *The replacement newcomers being extremely weak* (The Karate 🥋 Kid, Gravedale High, Kid & Play, Yo! Yogi and ProStars: especially).
    3) *NBC News wanting to expand the Today show to Saturdays* (the one day they did not air on; Today had only expanded to Sundays about 1987).
    4) Lastly, the success of Saved By the Bell leading to NBC executives doing what most network execs do when a show is a huge hit: *order as many clones as possible.* Leading to the birth of Teen NBC (TNBC) on September 12, 1992.
