I tried out Purigen a couple of years ago after watching your recommendations. It's absolutely one of my favorite products!! I have researched how to regenerate it before, but I've never done it!! I have watched several videos on how to regenerate puregen. Tommy I have to say this is the most detailed and easy to understand descriptions of how to accomplish regenerating this amazing product!!! I've never seen taking the actual Purigen out of the bag I think this is a great pro tip!!! Thank you so very much for the video and I hope you and everyone at Green Aqua is having a wonderful and blessed day👍🌿🐟🌿🙏🥰♥️
Great video! I use Purigen in one tank. Water is still clear, but it seems to me, there's a slight green tint. For me it's either slight tannin colouring, or Purigen. I knew I should use bleach, I think I got even a short "recipe" from a LFS on that, but this video helps a lot.
Thanks so much for this very helpful video Tommy! One thing I learned for this was the time aspect when one does the regeneration of the Purigen, especially the neutralisation of the chlorine. Thanks Green Aqua!

Just yesterday I was looking for a good Purigen video and today you post it. Its like you read my mind. Thank you, it will be in the next order from you. I have a JBL e702 filter and a 105 liter aquarium, I think 100ml will be enough. Where is the best place to put purigen in the filter?
Great informative video guys! Yeah ever since I’ve started using purigen like 3 years ago my water is crystal clear! The combo of that and matrix really are unmatched for water clarity! I was nervous the first regeneration of it but I’ve never lost a fish, snail or shrimp!
Didn't know you had to take it out of the bag, which probably explains why I had so much trouble cleaning it. Thanks for the tip, and I love the format!
Good to know you recommend a higher ratio to product to tank water... I always found the Seachem recommendation to be a bit thin but was afraid to use more, I thought perhaps it could have a negative effect.
Is "Prime" and "Poly Fill" brand-names for two other filter materials ?? (In Denmark we have a product called "Poly Filla" that we buy in a hardware-store, and use to fill out wholes and cracks in walls).
Excellent video I didn't know it took up to 6 months to have to renew the purigen. A lot of people make a big deal out of it, but you guys are awesome as always. Bring more videos like this one!

Do you guys plan on making any videos on the type of glass tanks and where to buy them, I can't find many online, im based in America.
That’s pretty much what I was doing it for awhile. Only I was putting purigen in the watered bleach until doing filter maintenance. 😮Didn’t leave it until the purigen is getting too dark, so didn’t take long for this job.
We have Hydrogen Peroxide for other cleaning purposed around the house. We have avoided using Bleach since it is more caustic. Can Hydrogen Peroxide be used in place of Hydrogen Chloride? If so, do I still need the secondary bleach cleanup process. GREAT VIDEO; SHORT AND SWEET AND TO THE POINT!
Great video! I have a question for you, I see on the Internet that they recommend putting Purijen in an fx6 filter in the upper basket, as well as in the middle one, as well as in the lower one :D. I was totally confused, where is the best placement solution. In one filter Fx6 I have 3 baskets with Matrix, in the other FX6 I have glass ceramics at the bottom and in the middle basket, and at the top, like in a sandwich with Fluval quick clear, 1 bag of Purijen and 1 bag of Carbon. Any advice on where exactly to put the Purijen bag?
hello you always have very interesting videos. I have a question. can we use this product if we have an aquarium with a lot of plants? it is said that the product removes nitrates that could not create an imbalance?
My purigen doesnt seem to get back close to its nearly white colour after just 24 hours in the 1:1 bleach and water solution. Has anyone tried a longer soaking period in the water/bleach or should I just not be concerned about the slight brown colouring to the regenerated purigen ?
Replying to my own post.......I decided to try a new brand of bleach and the results were outstanding, very clean purigen after 24 hours of soaking. I was using a supermarket brand of bleach but switched to a name brand and the difference is amazing. So if you have similar issues it might be worth paying a little extra for your bleach.
is there any issue if you let it dry after a regeneration with bleech? does it always have to be in water? i read a comment in reddit that says it stops working once you use and then let it dry, which made no sense thanks for the video tommy, great explanation as always
You run the filter! If you stop it for too long the bacteria inside will die. It's not really a big deal to run the filter without purigen (purigen is just a bonus, your tank can be completely nice without it). Now, knowing the green aqua team they do like I do and just buy two sets of purigen bags for each filter so that they don't have to open the filter twice and they have all the time they need to clean the dirty bag.
hello thanks for the tips! i have a question... I just bought seachem purigen and when I opened the pack... the smell was like vinegar (it was bad for me). Kind of this bad smell is normal in seachem purigen?
In a Biobox internal filter I put the perlon as a pre-filter at the top then the biological blue foam then chemical activated carbon and the clay balls at the bottom. At what level should I put the Purigen for optimal results?
In the penthouse,I feel like the best ppl is the best results in your system. So I have been keeping the original and run it for 5 - 7 days and she spray the stuff out in the shower 👞
If i buy 2x100ml purigen bags and rotate each bag. Clean 1 then use the other The one i'm not using do i have to keep it wet or it doesn't matter over time?
Oops I just regenerated my purigen with the seachem bag back in 100% bleach. does that mean I destroyed it? I also let it sit for a couple of days in just water without any prime, and then rinsed it before putting it back in my filter. I did use prime in my aquarium when I turned it back on
Ideally, many many times, but I found that it is a process that needs to be done very carefully, so no chlorine gets into the tank water after it. So the answer would be as many times as you can avoid getting your fish poisoned. ;)
My tip for my fellow nano tank aquascape fans: buy/use regular tea filters for your nano tank’s hang-on back filters; much cheaper much easier and saves you lots of hassle how to place/use purigen in
Seachem developed Aqua Vitro many years ago...the line of products that are only sold by independent retailers to help them compete with the big box chains ?they
@greenaqua hi i say purigen's regeneration process on their website and they recommend 4 tablespoon for 1 cup of water and here your recommendations are different.. kind of confused.
Üdv! Sziasztok!
I use Purigen in all my tanks but I question the 24 hour/8 hour times that Seachem recommends. It returns to its original color after an hour or so in the bleach and for the chlorine removal it seems to me that the Prime solution would do the job in a matter of minutes.
Our experience is that we often need to soak in prime sometimes for another day when the material is dirty. Maybe the one you used was slightly dirty. Once the color is gone, you only need to remove the chlorine.
Why is there such a difference in ratio/quantity of Prime:Water on the official instructions (4 tablespoons of Prime per 1 cup of water)? Is it just so Seachem can get you to use more of their product? Also, is the buffering step necessary?
The main thing is to remove the chlorine scent. Prime is the best water conditioner out there and you need to use only a little for this task. We only use bleach and prime. Never used the buffering step.
I just wanna point out, chlorine =/= bleach. Bleach tends to contain sodium hypochlorite (chlorine) but it always contains other things as well. A lot of bleaches are also dropping chlorine as the active ingredient in favor of hydrogen peroxide. As said on the video, be very sure to read the label.
Dude that method you used to get it out of the bowl at 4:25 looked tedius. Can you no tuse it in the bag? I mean will it not clean it all or something? Why dump it all out where you have to go fishing..
Usually we recommend 100 ml for 100 liter and that lasts about 4-6 months before it needs to be regenerated, but that highly depends on what's in your tank. Lots of iron wood will shorten this time frame for example.
Not sure how much you used for your aquarium and also how long you kept it running there. We would recommend 100ml Purigen for every 100L aquarium water. And do the cleaning in every 3-4 months. If your filtration performs well and the Purigen gets in contact with clean water it will not be a problem. So it is not a good idea to neglect a filter for example.
Hmm nice video but I feel like the last part is excessive unless someone is in a super hurry(no second backup media bag ready) or has chloramines in their tap water or doesnt know if they have chloramines. I live in Canada and usually the biggest cities or remote locations will have chloramines, just inform yourself, I feel like you have a legal right to know what they put in your water 🤪If just chlorine, instead of wasting Prime and you are poor like me, you can rinse it in tap water, then just put it somewhere with good air circulation and let it dry, preferably not in a closed space as it will evaporate pretty easily within a day or two depending on how often you "fluff" the media to let moisture be trapped in one place. Hope this helps! And...no, don't hang it on the back of your computer fan 🙃
You can. But you can’t recharge it and it’s a different material entirely, and you can’t see when’s it’s full either. Purigen is more chemically ionically active so manmade circles, it should draw out more colour/tannins but isn’t like carbon relying on baked surface area to absorb.
Will be harder to remove the chlorine. You need more Prime and probably longer soaking period with it. May need to repeat it a few times until the scent goes off.
Better to use hydrogen peroxide than hypochlorous acid (bleach). Hydrogen peroxide is significantly better for your health and the environment, and you don't have to deal with residual chlorine.
I've been using Purigen since I decided to ''raise'' the level of my tanks, high tech tanks I mean. It works, but for some reasons sometimes I took out the Purigen and didn't replace it right away and really the difference is almost imperceptible. I think you see the difference when the wood has tannins.
Finally!!! An easy explanation and visual presentation on how to recharge purigen. Thank you

Can we re-generate the seachem matrix (filter media) the same way ?
It's probably not a great idea because of the porosity structure. Simple cleaning it with running water is enough on Matrix.
