    I get perfectly white purigen by using a very similar process. Same container you use too. I rinse. Put into thin bleach, no water. 24hrs. Rinse, back into thin bleach no water 24hrs. Rinse, into a water and prime 4 parts water to 1 part prime, 24hrs. Rinse and sniff test. I used to soak in discus buffer but over the years have stopped. I used to sit the bag in water and do tests on it but never got any results showing and signs of residual bleach or any other nasty so stopped using buffer process. I do find that the bags after 4 years are splitting at the seams, be good to know if anyone else has this issue. Good video 👍🏼

    Hi Daniel thanks for posting this video it was very helpful. How long will zeolite still work in the tank eg how often do you recharge it ? Every month? Every 3 months what?? Jill Loftus, North Yorkshire

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Jill. I'm afraid there isn't one straight answer I can give to this. It rather depends on how much organic matter is suspended in your water column. This will be dependant on a few factors including your stocking levels, how heavily planted you tank may be, how frequently and how much you feed your fish and your water change/maintenance regime. What I would be comfortable to say is on average you can get a good few weeks out of it before considering a recharge may be necessary.

    Does purigen take the place of carbon filtration or do you use both?

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Purigen actually absorbs (or adsorves) more than carbon but carbon is cheaper.
      If you're going to use both o would have the water flowing through the carbon first to try to get it to do most of the heavy lifting and the Purigen last to let it do a great job of polishing the water.

    Great Practical advice. Got any advice on bacterial blooms that won’t clear?

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's definately a bacterial bloom yes? Some rocks can leech minerals into the water column if the aren't aquarium safe.
      Generally it's due to something happening that has allowed the for the bloom; an un-noticed dead fish, over feeding or over cleaning the tank and/or filter.
      There are chemicals available but using them means forever chancing the balance that the tank should do naturally.
      I'd leave it. Check for dead bodies, feed sparingly if at all for a few days, leave the filter alone and don't change any water unless you feel you need to then only a small water change. That should clear it.

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can but you don't need to. It's more about how much organic matter is in the water for the Purigen to absorb. Obviously the more you use the slower it will fill the granuals and the less frequently it will need to be recharges. Also your maintenance regime will impact on that so how often you change water, how much, how heavy you feed and how heavily your tank is planted.
      I'd say the more the better so if you have two filters placing one in each but you could try just one first and see how it goes if you prefer.

      So the U-series are grate filters but don't necessarily have a lot of space inside for media. You could use a small amount in the central compartment but you'll probably need to re-bag to achieve an amount that fits.
      As for recharging it will mosyltly depend on how much organic matter you have in your water; the more it absorbs the more often you'll need to recharge it. You can recharge up to about ten times.

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It kind of depends on a few factors. How heavily stocked the tank is, how much you feed, what your maintenance regime is like... It will be different for everyone.
      Basically keep an eye on it. When it's getting brown and visibly collecting waste give it a clean and recharge.

      I use Prime because it is my favourite but you can use an equivalent de-chlorinator. I would visit your local fish store and ask for the best aquarium water de-chlorinator they carry. You can even explain to the staff what you are doing and see which they advise.
      Essentially all you are aiming to achieve is to neutralise the bleech so you can add the Purigen back to your tank system.
      Hope that helps.

      I'm not really sure it is designed for blackwater tanks to be honest. It is designed to trap organic materia from the water column which is where it is most effective. It's also great at removing tannins from the water which is why yours would have turned brown really quickly but with a blackwater tank that kind of defeats the purpose and would take a whole lot of Purigen to suck all the tannins out which you don't really want anyway. 👍

      Hmm... not really bud. A bit of a faint chemical scent I might expect but not necessarily fishy.

      If it worries you too much though and you have the budget for it just toss it and get another. Sometimes it isn't worth the worry. Certainly worth running through the recharging process once more and seeing what happens hey?

    Wait. Ignorance here. Still don't understand purigen. Why does just changing the color back with bleach "recharge" it? How does purigen work exactly? I thought I used chemicals. To clean the water.

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  ปีที่แล้ว

      So in a nutshell it captures organic material out of the water column and makes the water an extra level of clear. It's not a necessity but the cherry on the top for clear water.
      The reason it needs to be recharged is because it collects the organic materia an traps it so it kinda maxes out, eventually it won't do any good. Recharging it resets it so it's ready to go again.
      Hope that explains it somewhat.

    You can also recharge loose packed activated carbon/charcoal. Take old carbon and rinse it in tank water in a bucket. Then place it on a metal cookie tray/flat metal baking pan thinly spread out. Preheat oven to 300F and then bake the carbon for 1-2 hours until it is completely dry and dessicated of all moisture. Let cool, then place in ziplock bag ot jar until you need it again.
