    Clearly a football legend is Dave Watson. Knowing both Dave and Penny personally I found it emotional watching it and wish them both the best that can happen. I believe Penny summed it all up perfectly the care and steps that could be taken. They also love football and want a better way for the older players and the younger ones coming through. May their dreams come true and god bless them and all who need support. Tom Docherty

    Dave Watson was a tremendous centre-back. As brave as they come. Something has to be done in terms of compensation for all these past players and their suffering. It's a scandal.

    Great segment! 👍
    My heart goes out to the former England player and his wife! ❤🙏
    Keano being spot on!
    Think the FA regulating headers in youth football is a good first step.
    Wish we had that here in Germany.
    In the future ... maybe an outright change of the rules by IFAB will be necessary, to bring in a full on header ban in Football.
    And maybe even a jumping-up-battling-for-the-ball-ban plus better protection for goalies ( especially when they are on the ground with their head being vulnerable ) as well!
    All the best! ✌

    My dad - John Tudor is further down the line with his illness so we relate to what the Watsons are going through. It is heartbreaking watching parts of your loved ones fade away month by month and equally as hard watching those who care for them struggle also. While I understand the fear of admitting responsibility that would make the FA vulnerable to lawsuits like the NFL, they can do the right thing and do right by the ex-players. Right now, through Dawn Astle the FA is moving to do something to help cover the expenses of former players. Dawn is a saint, but it is sad that it takes that for them to step up and do the right thing. These players built the foundations of where we are today and all they get for sacrificing their mental health is an expense ticket. I am hopeful that more will come of this but thank you to ITV for bringing it to the frontline

    The only way this will ever get sorted is when the powers that be are being/about to be forced to pay so much in compensation they have no other choice. Until then they'll kick the can (which is really a massive timebomb) down the road.

    This is a tragic story. I’ve been a match going fan at MCFC for more than 50 years, I saw Dave Watson many times playing for my club. He was a fantastic player, great strength, awareness, great in the tackle, great in the air and could play out from the back. He would get in this current team under pep, without doubt, he was that good. My heart goes out to him and his family🩵🩵🩵

    I feel really sorry for the family and everyone affected .. so sad
    However to ban heading in football would be the end of football.. how could the game be played without heading the ball. Modern footballs are not as hard as old ones so the impact wont be as much ..

      @tk80mufa5 it's quite obvious you've not played football ..
      Have you heard of a corner in football . Not going to work without heading .. its a natural reaction to head the ball

    • @flatoutflatbroke
      @flatoutflatbroke 22 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +2

      Mass of an object is not the only factor in an impact. Modern footballs may not soak up water but they can travel faster. If you watch the Shearer doc you'll see that there is an immediate impact to brain function from heading the ball.

      And Pep does not encourage his players to head the ball as there are no more high long balls and high crosses into the penalty box in MCITY gameplay.

      @@tk80mufa5the British long ball game, was to blame, it was only Brian Clough,s Derby and Nottingham forest teams, and Don Revie,s Leeds that passed the ball through midfield, most of the others were long ball teams ,as Clough once said we weren't meant to play football in the air.

    My wife is a clinical psychologist working with older adults and has met several former footballers with dementia. I think industrial injury claims is completely valid: especially for players from that era who headed very heavy balls and didn't even earn particularly high wages (example: Nobby Stiles sold all his medals etc).

    • @flaauws
      @flaauws 17 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      The balls are a lot lighter now but they're probably also travelling more quickly and the players are more athletic in some ways so impact might not be all that different. Add in the fact that a lot of players are spending more time on the pitch and in training than ever and something does need to be done. I don't want to see the game played only on the ground and hopefully it won't come to that: but the potential for head trauma needs to be greatly reduced.

    I'm a Leeds fan and he kept Clarke and Jones quiet that day; he was one brilliant defender. This is so sad to see, but what are the football authorities actually doing about it? Nothing. Surely with today's tech they could produce a headguard that could provide complete protection? Or better still, ban heading altogether.

    I remember my Grandpa telling me once about a player that was marking him, heading the ball away throughout the game. The weather was terrible with heavy rain and it was one of the old style leather balls with the laces on, that absorbed water. He said the player marking him could barely walk by the end of the game through concussion.

    Anyone who hasn’t lived with Alzheimer’s don’t understand how cruel it is. Your entire body breaks down in the most horrible way imaginable. It’s the worst possible fate. Anyone who advocates for football players to be condemned to such a fate because they don’t want “their” game ruined is a monster. The game is called FOOTball. First banning heading in training would be a start. Multiple options include 1) If the ball goes above waste height (except for goals and free kicks), it should be an illegal ball like in youth football and futsal. 2) Spacing the players out, makes it less likely for collisions. Goal kicks is easy to do. Corners and long throw ins, you only have a small number of players allowed in the box, all spaced out. All those players wear shock absorbing headgear, like in rugby. Unfortunately crossing above head height would have to be banned.

    F.A shoul be more accountable than governments morally? I was shocked by heading the ball banned under 12s. Was part of the game getting half a glancing head when throws corners free kicks, vicious elbows were not booked if no contact . Brutal minimum really.Was a semi contact sport. Hopefully Dave can get best from his future knowing played at top level achieved his dreams. LEGEND.

    The thing is that I think in boxing and football the people are trying to prove their toughness by hitting each other and it’s really not that painful. That’s why they banned chop blocks but kept hitting each other in the head. But you’re losing your ability to think. It’s like being locked in the eye which isn’t necessarily that painful but you’re losing your ability to see. It’s probably more painful to study and become very intelligent than to get hit in the head. Your not doing anything that skillful or special and your losing brain. It’s harder to walk a tightrope without falling than to slam into things.

    All the £millions if not £billions in football and the powers that be still kick the can down the road using fancy words and statements just as a stalling tactic. We all know what's what. There is no excuse anymore not to help these great former players. Unfortunately it's dragged on so long now it's too late for alot of our great players from the past.😢😢😢

    how sad to see the great Dave Watson in this state, what a brave lady his wife is, roy keane(the only modern pundit worth listening to) is spot on about the 60s/70s players, they are completely forgotten(real fans remember of course) trevor whymark, chico hamilton, john dempsey to name three recent deaths, nobody cares in the money soaked, woke modern game, the FA are far too concerned with pushing woke causes sadly(like every bloody institution these days) so as usual they come out with meaningless platitudes, i hate what the game has become and i wish Dave and Penny all the very best
