It's not often that fans are faced with the dilema of rooting for the game at the expense of their team. It was refreshing to see that Seattle fans understood and celebrated such a remarkable feat. You guys should be proud of yourselves.
I was at this game on my 13th birthday, I’ll never forget Phillip Humber’s name. I couldn’t help but cheer and root for the perfect game throughout the whole 9th inning
i was so young at this game. i never knew what a perfect game was so when every1 was cheering i kept saying n telling my dad “they won the world series” and then he told me what really happened
Unbelievable fans in Seattle. You guys are amazing! From a lifelong Sox fan, you showed us how to really appreciate a historic performance. I wish nothing but good luck to your team and city in the future. Go White Sox! Go Seattle!
im a mariner fan i started watching at the 7th inning and i was shocked he had a perfect game, i was happy but then again he did make history against the team i root for.
This is a fantastic video. Nice work! I paused it where Ryan's bat is at its furthest extent and it's almost impossible to say whether or not he went. The bat isn't quite parallel with the front of the plate, but Ryan lunges so far forward that it's hard to fault the ump for thinking he didn't check his swing. I still don't know if he went or not and I've watched this a bunch of times at different angles. And seeing as history was on the line, I'm totally fine with this call.
Thank you for posting this video. Cool footage to see since it looks like you had great seats! Thanks again because I missed this game since I had to go to work.....from a Chicago White Sox fan. Thanks Seattle for the nice class you showed.
Great post bro. I'm a White Sox, but just callin it I see it., If the batter's hands break and commit, it's a strike. He wouldn't have gotten to 1st even if he didn't argue. Congratulations Phil Humber!
I lived in Seattle for 3 years and yes, they are classy fans. By the way, the last pitch was a strike on the batter. It was a 3 - 2 whipe out slider (which takes huge balls to throw at that point), he broke his wrists and crossed the plate. Perfect Game.
Ryan did show a lot of class. After the game they asked him if he checked his swing and he refused to even talk about it and praised Mr. Humber. Good guy.
The M's fans epitomized sportsmanship and decency; after watching Seattle bury my White Sox in the 2000 postseason, it was hard to imagine ever pulling for them. Now I will. May their fans one day know the euphoria that the Chisox enjoyed in '05 ... also, major tip of the hat to 13igshay24 for a really nice video, shot at a great angle. From the TV broadcast it looked like a definite check swing, but from this viewpoint you can see that the hitter went.
This is a good camera angle. If you freeze it, the bat does cross in front of the plate. It looks like they got the call correct. This angle is slightly behind home, so it may be deceptive.
I'd be thrilled to see a perfect game even if my team was at the butt end of it. You are literally watching baseball history and only 21 sets of fans have ever gotten to see it.
doesn't matter if it's the worst hitting team or the best hitting team, if you can get 27 outs in a row with no interruptions, then that's damn impressive.
actually this is AJs first perfect game the last one was with Buehrle with catcher Castro and he had just been picked up by the Sox 2 months prior...regardless awesome game!!
The Major League Baseball rulebook doesn't contain an official definition for a checked swing; it is the decision of the umpire presiding. Generally, factors such as whether the bat passes the front of the plate or the batter pulls his wrists back are considered in the ruling.
he swung. The knob of the bat is in front of the plate. He tried playing it out by walking forward a little bit to make it look like he checked his swing.
good for phil humber. however, have you ever noticed that when some pitchers pitch a no hitter/perfect game they tend to fall apart. humber was never the same and neither was mark buehrlie. don't get upset fans, it is what is. it's just a game.
If you pause the video at 2:52 and press play/pause repeatedly till 2:53 when the swing happens you can see without question that Ryan does NOT check his swing. The bat is well in front of the plat and his wrists broke. Also the MLB does not OFFICIALLY recognize a checked swing. There is no rule anywhere that defines or acknowledges a checked swing, therefore it does not exist. It's a swing.
Swear to god, didn't even hear about this until I watched Jared Weaver on Letterman. And Letterman mentioned Humbers' perfect game. Hell, I didn't even know who Humber was.
13 seconds in to the video, "One out away from a perfect game." You just broke the number 1 rule: Never talk about a perfect game while one is in progress.
It's not about the bat going around, there in NOTHING in the MLB rulebook about a specific distance the bat has to travel for an attempted swing... what the question is, in the opinion of the umpire, did the batter commit to swinging at the pitch? In Brian Runge's view, Brendan Ryan committed, and he called the strike. Kudos to the Mariners fans at Safeco Field... they were very appreciative of Humber's effort.
Tough call on the check swing. Could've gone either way, but I think the strike call wasn't a bad one. There was an instant there were it looked like he went just a bit far. In a situation like that though, if I'm the batter, I run down to first base immediately. If it's a strike, you have a chance at getting to first. If it's a ball and the catcher takes his time, you could threaten to go to second.
Ryan thought he checked his swing sufficiently and began to walk to his base, then he realized he got a strike called on him and started to yell at the ump, after he turned around to yell he realized the catcher had dropped the ball so he started to run back to first but then realized it was too late and became further frutrated and turned back to argue with the ump.
The fact that the check-swing was that close (equal amount arguing for both ways) means it could have gone either way, which means you cannot fault the umpire for going either way. Personally, to me it could've gone either way, but I would say it looked like he swung since the arms extended so far forward on the swing
It was a close, VERY close call. But the Umps don't have replays, slowmos and pauses. It's a split second decision, it's a close play that can be called either way, 99 times out of 100 the umpire will give that close call to a pitcher with 26 straight outs.
I used to think he didn’t swing but from this angle, I definitely think he did.
seriously - I am so impressed w/the quality of this video and the class of Seattle fans. Thank you.
Really impressed with the amount of class, and respect shown by the Mariners fans. I hope you guys have a fantastic season this year.
I was at this game, per extraordinary circumstances. Still can't believe that I witnessed the 21st perfect game in MLB history 🤷♂️.. such a blessing.
i was so young at this game. i never knew what a perfect game was so when every1 was cheering i kept saying n telling my dad “they won the world series” and then he told me what really happened
Unbelievable fans in Seattle. You guys are amazing! From a lifelong Sox fan, you showed us how to really appreciate a historic performance. I wish nothing but good luck to your team and city in the future. Go White Sox! Go Seattle!
i think thats great. Seattle, my hats off to you for the class you showed in this game. makes me proud to be a fan of baseball.
im a mariner fan i started watching at the 7th inning and i was shocked he had a perfect game, i was happy but then again he did make history against the team i root for.
Thank you for recording this.
I'll never forget when I was watching this. I was really rooting for the guy to do it. I liked how Seattle fans were cheering.
This is a fantastic video. Nice work! I paused it where Ryan's bat is at its furthest extent and it's almost impossible to say whether or not he went. I was at this game and felt privileged to see a perfect game!
Man Im impressed Seattle fans, you guys got alot of class.
Great video! Great angle, great quality. Thanks for uploading it!
So impressed with the Seattle fans. Pure class.
I watched this game. The last out was heart-pounding. When I thought he threw a ball, I almost fainted!
people don't give enough credit to the catcher for a perfect game I feel like.
This was Humber's second start of the season. He finished the season 5-5 with a gianormous ERA of 6.44. But on this day... he was perfect.
The only thing I can say about this video...you had an AWESOME view of it! I love seeing videos of things like this from the fan's perspective!
Thank you for posting this video. Cool footage to see since it looks like you had great seats!
Thanks again because I missed this game since I had to go to work.....from a Chicago White Sox fan. Thanks Seattle for the nice class you showed.
Wow, what a shot! Thanks for this. It does appear to be a legit perfect game from this angle.
It does't appear so... it was.
From my view I had no doubt it was a check swing, but after Jim Joyce ruining Armando Galarraga's perfect game you know there gonna give it to him.
Yeah, don’t think he went around, but give it to the kid. He had a special game, hate to see it blown on a close call like that
Excellent video !!
Great post bro. I'm a White Sox, but just callin it I see it., If the batter's hands break and commit, it's a strike. He wouldn't have gotten to 1st even if he didn't argue. Congratulations Phil Humber!

I am a huge Mets fan and i hope this season we get our first no hitter, but congrats Phil!!!
Die hard sox fan im soooooooooooooooooo hyped congrats
Classy for the Mariners fan to cheer for him. A perfect game's a perfect game, your team or not.
Ryan did show a lot of class. After the game they asked him if he checked his swing and he refused to even talk about it and praised Mr. Humber. Good guy.

Umpire made the correct call as 2:53 shows, congrats Humber!
he definitely swung.....wow - what a finish
This is a good camera angle. If you freeze it, the bat does cross in front of the plate. It looks like they got the call correct. This angle is slightly behind home, so it may be deceptive.
Philip Humber . Former Met. Great job
Idk about that, but they are a very classy bunch and I respect them alot more by this.
Very classy, Seattle! I'd expect nothing less.
Awesome proof! Great angle on the swing.
Just freeze it as he swings. He went. Good for you Philip Humber. You deserve it.
Seattle Fans are Classy Respectful and Know the Game Best Fans Anywhere
Very classy Seattle fans. I'm truly impressed.
Go sox.
That is some real baseball
My pulse was off the charts during this man...holy shit. I tell ya, Humber deserved this game; he's a good guy
Couldnt agree more brotha.
What Class Seattle Fans !!!!!! Impressive !!!!
He went no question about it.
非常敬佩美國球迷
即使在客場還是替Philip Humber加油祝福!
that 3-0 count comeback was remarkable. knew it would happen after that
Gave me goosebumps
I'd be thrilled to see a perfect game even if my team was at the butt end of it. You are literally watching baseball history and only 21 sets of fans have ever gotten to see it.
I threw a perfect game saturday night against a very good team, i struck out 8. Greatest night of my life!
yea perfect game every season, that makes sense! thats why there hav been 21 perfect games in the history of the league!! pshht shaaduup
its great for the other team to be good sports about it
Way to go Seattle. Cool city.
doesn't matter if it's the worst hitting team or the best hitting team, if you can get 27 outs in a row with no interruptions, then that's damn impressive.
Hahah this is actually one of the funniest comments I have read on this site. Congratulations xD
actually this is AJs first perfect game the last one was with Buehrle with catcher Castro and he had just been picked up by the Sox 2 months prior...regardless awesome game!!
Impressive performace. But i am a Yankee fan. And thanks to this the 9 run comeback Vs Boston was not as hype on the news
the one year anniversary!!!!!
The Major League Baseball rulebook doesn't contain an official definition for a checked swing; it is the decision of the umpire presiding. Generally, factors such as whether the bat passes the front of the plate or the batter pulls his wrists back are considered in the ruling.
As a Seattle fan, what's it like watching the other pitcher throw a perfect game. Is it just as exiting?
he swung. The knob of the bat is in front of the plate. He tried playing it out by walking forward a little bit to make it look like he checked his swing.
at first i never thought he went around on that swing, i thought the ump just gave it to humber. but its obvious from this angle that he went.
It almost does. Close enough i can see it being called either way.
very good point
How gutsy was that final pitch? Crazy insane berserk!
Well if I were a witness to something that had only happened 20 times before, I'd cheer too.
Like a boss!
The poor batter in the batter's circle. He is warming up going "What the hell am I doing here?"
lol was thinking something similar
good for phil humber. however, have you ever noticed that when some pitchers pitch a no hitter/perfect game they tend to fall apart. humber was never the same and neither was mark buehrlie. don't get upset fans, it is what is. it's just a game.
Pause it at 2:53. Clearly the bat broke the plane. Great fn pitch! The Good Guys look even better now than they did in '05! GO SOX! One more ring!
last one was last year...and there has never been multiple perfections in one season.
AJ also caught Mark Buehrle's perfect game. Has there ever been any catchers who caught 2 perfect games?
No he didn't
I remember he had a good first start the year before but thats about it.
You're right I thought in was a swing the umpire got it right even the pitch was confimed ball four
nice cam what kind
Swear to god, didn't even hear about this until I watched Jared Weaver on Letterman. And Letterman mentioned Humbers' perfect game. Hell, I didn't even know who Humber was.
Hell you can pause this video and see he went half way.
Congats to Felix Hernandez who just threw a perfect game against the Tampa Bay Rays!
thats one hell of a camera
True baseball fans know when they've seen something amazing. Makes me jealous (I'm 10 minutes from Anaheim).
Curious... what is your definition of "check swing" ?
13 seconds in to the video, "One out away from a perfect game." You just broke the number 1 rule: Never talk about a perfect game while one is in progress.
It's not about the bat going around, there in NOTHING in the MLB rulebook about a specific distance the bat has to travel for an attempted swing... what the question is, in the opinion of the umpire, did the batter commit to swinging at the pitch? In Brian Runge's view, Brendan Ryan committed, and he called the strike. Kudos to the Mariners fans at Safeco Field... they were very appreciative of Humber's effort.
how do you call a check swing? i ump but no one has told me how u call it
hahah great perfect game!! but i still wished that Tiger's pitcher also got it. He definitely should've gotten it.
Tough call on the check swing. Could've gone either way, but I think the strike call wasn't a bad one. There was an instant there were it looked like he went just a bit far. In a situation like that though, if I'm the batter, I run down to first base immediately. If it's a strike, you have a chance at getting to first. If it's a ball and the catcher takes his time, you could threaten to go to second.
by the way. just thought id let you guys know that aj pierzinski has caught two perfect games and a no hitter. wowwwww!!!!
What a beast! White Sox are killing it right now.
Ryan thought he checked his swing sufficiently and began to walk to his base, then he realized he got a strike called on him and started to yell at the ump, after he turned around to yell he realized the catcher had dropped the ball so he started to run back to first but then realized it was too late and became further frutrated and turned back to argue with the ump.

of course we did. in 2011 we did.
It was a close, VERY close call. But the Umps don't have replays, slowmos and pauses. It's a split second decision, it's a close play that can be called either way, 99 times out of 100 the umpire will give that close call to a pitcher with 26 straight outs.
2:52 He went!
White Sox fans had absolutely no idea who Humber was before this game.
A perfect game is where a pitcher gives up no hits or walks. A no-hitter is where a pitcher gives up at least one walk but doesn't give up any hits.
3:04 lol I love AJ
GO RANGERS!!!!!
