  • It seems bonkers to use the term ‘entry level’ in the same sentence as ‘£13,100’, but yet, here it is: the A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Thin is the brand’s entry level watch, and it costs a whopping £13,100. But is it worth it?

    When I graduated college my parents bought me an A. Lange & Sohne 1815 (235.032). My dad is a rolex guy and sold his pepsi to help pay for this for me. I cried when I got the watch and I wear it ever single day. When I did my interview for medical school the person interviewing me was also wearing an A. Lange & Sohne. We did not talk about anything other than watches during that interview and I was accepted into the program. I wear the watch everywhere except when working out when I swap for a Garmin Fenix 7X

    Prowd owner of a Lange 1 Moonphase owner here!
    Wow, the moment at 4:33 is breathtaking - the width of each of the petals in the hand-engraved balance cock is ~0.2mm. There are around 30 little ridges in each of the petals. Each ridge is 6 micrometers wide.
    To put that into perspective, that's about the size of a single red blood cell. Or two bacteria wide.
    To say that the level of detail is absolutely exquisite in these watches is a vast understatement :')

    A. Lange & Söhne is a great brand. I really appreciate that they finish EVERY watch to the same level. There is no 'poor man's Lange' out there. They may not hold the value as some Patek's do but you always have to decide for what reason you buy a watch like this. And I would do it for honoring the craftmanship and appreciation to watchmaking. And maybe a little because of national pride ;-)

    • @adiands850
      @adiands850 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Their marketing department likes to spin it that way, but it's not entirely true. For example, some of their watches have had the same movements but on the cheaper model they would not expose the balance wheels so they can save costs on finishing, i.e. not finish it to the same standard as the more expensive model.

      @@JPS-sc1zn fortunately & thankfully I not only understand the video but also appreciate craft manship. Hover the price tag here is objectively not for the craftsmanship but for the name... if you or anyone says otherwise they are genuinely mistaken or being sly. Even the video addresses this point. A rolex or omega watch will hold its value much better than this & make better hand me downs sadly even though this watch is good but not price tag worthy. It does not have limited number of watches built. It does not have an eye catchy design like rolex or patek. It is overpriced and for rich people who can buy 400, 000$ cars. Simply amazing craftmanship... I love the understated elegance of these pieces as it communicates true class. Bravo! Many times, I think the folks who appreciate this level of workmanship are those who work with their hands, such as dentists, surgeons, machinists, and inventors.
    Growing up in the electrical business, I learned early on the greatness of exceptional craftsmanship. When visiting friends in Switzerland (where they built great stuff), I'd spend time in his cellar just admiring the house wiring, a beautiful joy to behold. Bottom line: The Germans and Swiss are capable of producing the finest things on Earth! Yes, these watches are worth every penny, that is if you have that much available to spend! Hats off to Lange!

    • @jkoysza1
      @jkoysza1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed! One can easily live in a house made of clad styrofoam and sheet rock, with plastic pipes and twist connect wiring. At 30 years though, the house goes into steep functional and market value decline. I’d rather spend more heavily on a brick house with lath and plaster walls and copper piping so that my son could happily live there another 50 years. So it is with a fine watch.

    I want that 1815 chronograph. The Saxonia is worth the price. One would have to look around at what else one could get for 13k pounds and see if something else more fits into your taste. In terms of a time only dress watch, I can't think of anything better for the price.

There are watches in that price range I'd rather own where I wouldn't feel like I was settling for something just because it was easier to afford.

    I bought an 1815 because of the ALS work ethic of putting the same level of workmanship into every piece. I prefer the 1815 over the Saxonia simply because of the numerals on the 1815 dial. I love that the Saxonia deletes the seconds hand.

    It's fairly easy to justify the price of such craftsmanship when it comes to timepieces like this. Imagine walking around with what is essentially a Mastercrafted work of art on your wrist. Like an oil painting on canvas. It's truly a sight to behold. When thought of in a manner like this, only then can you justify the asking price. It's much more than "just a watch".

    I'm a watch fanatic 4 over 50 years. Watch prices are gone completely raving ridiculous mad. Is it worth it? Of course not. One is paying these ridicu;ous prices, why, the answer is simple! Years ago, the only watch one could buy, was a mec`a mechanical one. In that period, a Patek was, way back late sixtees under € 4000,--. A Omega constellation far under a 1000,--. If one compares the average wage then and now, someone who had a monthly salary 40 years ago, 2000 dollar per month, would nowadays earn 15000 to 20000 dollar or Euro per month, if it was in ratio to watch prices. But as most people today, buy a watch, which only needs a battery once every 2 years, or not even that, the watch company's who manufacture calibers themselves, have to build up prices, to atract those who can afford these. If one looks at the gold price, that indeed is high, and then take a look how much more one has to pay for an gold version, there's also a ridiculous difference. Is this watch worth it, no! It's what people seem wiling to pay.

  • @gurkankiziltan9429
    @gurkankiziltan9429 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    A watch with one of the most refined designs ever and built to the highest level of craftsmanship. In a world where you can buy several of those instead of a Nautilus, it absolutely is worth the price.

  • @tendrams
    @tendrams 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This piece offers a wonderful "two finger salute" to the likes of Patek. I think this is doubly the case on the grey market where this piece sits at closer to 9500-10K Pounds. Tough to argue against it in that sphere where there is VERY little that approaches it qualitatively for similar money. We are, after all, talking about a price that is almost HALF of a basic Calatrava and on monetary par with a lot what I think are lesser offerings from the likes of JLC, Omega, Rolex, Blancpain, or Breguet. If they ever make this in yellow gold, it could present a serious danger to my bank account.

    It’s not worth £13,100 to me but I can easily see why it would be, to someone. If I had the disposable income to afford one, I’d buy an A. Lange & Söhne before a Patek.

  • @viktornicht260
    @viktornicht260 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I absolutely understand why and how some people spend 42.000 pounds on an A. Lange & Söhne. But I don't see the spending of 13.000 pound on something like the Saxonian thin. For that money, you can buy a new omgea constellation, some cool, Value-increasing (and gorgeous looking) art and still have enough money to buy a great pre-owned Mercedes C class. All of these things alone are imo worth more than the Saxonian thin (that coming from an absolute watch lover), yet alone all combined...
    Surely, the price may have its justification - but I don't see a justification for spending that money on it.

    In my valuable opinion, I do see the amount of workmanship put into the watch; but at the same time can’t help but to think that even with that level of detail is £13100 justifiable. I love A.Lange Sohne but I think it’s far too much; perhaps I’d pay £6000 at most.

    • @winds.h9829
      @winds.h9829 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      True the price is hefty but by today's standard if you look at what watches £6000 can get and flip them over, they look like unpolished rocks compared to this thing, presuming the manufacturers aren't too ashamed to show the movement.

    No doubt the Saxonia thin is a great watch. Only thing is the case shape - those lugs look like a designer’s afterthought, “oops, I forgot the lugs, here they are, just so that straps can be attached.” Visually it throws off the balance with the rest of the case, nor is it have any decorative value. If I pay this much for a 3-handed (2 in this case), I’d demand a design based on more sophisticated understanding of the word “simplicity” - ref 5196.

    For that kind of money they should include a battery. It's hard to remember to wind. The lack of a tachymeter and rotating bezel is also a deal breaker.
