Big Fish on a Big Bucktail Jig!

  • Sometimes wind and current conditions force us to fish heavy to stay near the bottom. That's what happened near the end of this trip when a heavy bucktail produced one of my best catches of the season so far. We carry 2- to 6-ounce bucktails on these trips, but mostly fish 3 and 4 ounces in the 60-100' ocean depths.

    I spoke with a fisherman sunday about bucktailing for fluke and weight. The resistance of the bucktail is great for fluke at the weight that gives a slightly delayed drop is how he put it. One oz. makes the difference from a hard drop to a soft drop. I never thought about that and saw it that day with a snag in the white gil plate when the fish missed it and layed on it. The Rod put some money in my pocket this weekend, thanks John. My buddy Mark used it yesterday, caught a decent fish and will be picking up the same set up. 👍Nice catch

      I pump somewhat on the larger fish, but I make sure the rod always has a bend in it. Something to be aware of is that sometimes the boat is rising and falling in the waves, and you need to compensate for that.

    Fluke fishing is like bass fishing, sometimes you just have to figure out the pattern. At least you know what depth they are always at and I guess big ass fish is the scientific term for a 9 + pound fluke 😆

    can someone please fill me in on what "scooping out" means? Is it when you are drifting and the bucktail goes under your boat. He uses the words " go as light as you can without scooping out" so in my context i think he wants to be dragging the bucktail and not the current taking the bucktail. Thanks.

    • @Fishingandkicking
      @Fishingandkicking 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Scoping out is when your bait and line is pulled out from a vertical up and down position. So outside of 90 degrees. A little bit of scope is not bad but the more horizontal your line is to the water, the less likely you are holding bottom and keeping your bait in the fish’s strike zone.

      @@Fishingandkicking thanks last trip I had on my favorite drift spot I had 4oz jig on and I could not get it to be vertical it would keep going under my boat when drifting. I had to throw on a high low rig with a 6oz and drag the rig. I like jigging a lot better.

    I noticed something strange about your rod...looks like a 2 piece when the top part rotates out of alignment with the bottom half...check out the line guides...

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's called a spiral wrapped, or acid wrapped rod. Many high quality rods of this type are built this way. They are very comfortable because they transition the line from the top to the bottom of the rod, thus reducing torque that occurs when a rod with all of the guides on the top wants to turn on its side. If you try a spiral wrapped rod, it's unlikely you'll want anything else.

    Mr skinner, I agree with you that there is a lot to learn, sometimes though it appears as though it’s made more complicated than it needs to be. I’m of the mindset to keep it simple. Enjoy your videos, and learn a lot. Ironic.
    I’ll still keep it simple though.
    I’d like to know what your camera Is set at for frame rate ? 1080 p at 60 frames a second might help with the digital graininess.
    It’s very distorted at the boat, sometimes the fish, and fish pole disappear. Just as an FYI.
    Thanks again.

      Thanks for that. TH-cam drives me nuts with their compression. What I upload is crystal clear. What they present is as you describe. Jigging Jerk runs 60fps and I see the same distortion in his videos, though I'll revisit.
