    I agree with you that over watering destroys more succulents except for freezing temperatures. I also agree that growing succulents in humid conditions can be very difficult especially during the winter months. I would recommend using a dehumidifier in a heater greenhouse during the winter months. I live in the Los Angeles area and have idea conditions for growing most succulents outside in containers or in the ground. I can drive to areas where succulents or cactus which grow in the desert and have thought about letting nature water the plants. I actually grew some cactus for decades that only received natural rainfall.

    Thank you so much for this video. I live by my community's pond and there ard a lot of Fungus Gnats. They fly throught the screens at night to be near the lights. I put a layer of Diatomasious Earth and put cut smoothie straws through the top of the soil. Then I put heavy bolts in the ends of the straws to keep the Fungus Gnats from getting an easy passage to the plants' roots. I used to use a measuring cup to water the plants through the straws. It was not easy and took a long time. I bought a small water pump sprayer and now it is so quick and easy. THANK YOU!

      I'm happy to help! Letting the soil dry for a few days between watering will help dry out any gnat eggs/larvae and make it less enticing to mature gnats to nest in ;)

    I ordered some succulent cuttings from the succulent source about a month ago and watered very little like you suggest and you should see the roots on those things! And I tried propagating from leaves for the first time and I have baby pink roots on all but three of them! I'm so excited! Your propagating video and this one are both great 👍🏼

    • @SucsForYou
      @SucsForYou  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Root woot! Did you ever think you'd be so excited about roots? :D This is the best time of year to propagate leaves and cuttings too since it's growing season. So try taking more if you can, and don't be discouraged if growth slows down in a few months ;) Thanks for letting me know how things are going and keep me posted!

    For Mother's Day, I was given a beautiful succulent garden, with at least 10 different varieties. I am super new to succulents, so it will be fun to learn all the varieties, and their care....who knows maybe in a short while, I'll be creating my own little succulent gardens from starts. They are growing in my greenhouse, and they have a place of their own, since they don't require the same water as my pothos or bromeliads. So exciting!!

    When I water I prefer the flood method then letting it dry out completely for two weeks or so in the hot season. I always use rainwater too. I would water more frequently with less water but I'm afraid I'm going to cause rot because it's very humid in Atlanta

    I LOVE your porch! Thanks for sharing it with us. So helpful that you're keeping it real not rushing. I wish I could trade you terra cotta pots for plant....I have wayyy to many. My sucs have to stay indoors and I like random junk and fun pottery to plant in. My auctioneer friend was going to throw out all the pots from an estate...... WHAT! I had to take them all! I have to ask how many hours do you keep the grow lights on your babies out there? Thanks again!

      It's like wanting straight hair when you got curls and vice versa ;) I would be so happy if we could trade! But unless you're in the Houston area, shipping on clay pots would be $$$ I'm sure :/ Hang onto them! You can use them inside other arrangements, stack them up, use broken pieces to create sections in bigger pots....Or offer a local nursery to give you credit to their shop for them maybe?

    I have heaps of succulents, but I live in a sub tropical climate where we get heaps and heaps of summer rain, but lately we have been getting dry summers and wet winters. This last month we have had a week and a few days of dry and sunny otherwise it has been pouring. My succulents are out in the weather and it is getting cold do you think that I should move them under cover, except that the only place that I can put so many is on a shady balcony?

    • @SucsForYou
      @SucsForYou  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you have a lot of overcast weather you might consider a grow light if that's an option - it will help save a lot of stress and plants. Otherwise just keep them as dry as possible for as long as possible. Try not to water before it rains or while it's overcast. I understand your situation and it's just a pain sometimes :/

    What should be the soil mixture for propagation of branch and stem ( I have sacculent soil mixture bought from Amazon India) , I have also leaf compost, fine sand and also perlite, pumice stone. The watering schedule for leaf propagation and branch propagation I mess up and cutting rot or dies .
    I have never been succeduded leaf propagation and branch propagation in cocopeat and sand last year. So this year I bought Succulent soil mixture online .
    Here in india , Calcutta is now early spring humidity level is low right now. Where from you are ?
    Waiting for your valuable responses for successful propagation.
    Deb, Calcutta, India.

      Hi Deb! I'm in Houston, Texas where it's very hot and humid from late spring till fall. Try a soilless mix - perlite/pumice etc. It's much easier to manage and less risk for bacteria/fungal problems 🙏

    I really like that funnel technique! Do you ever water until it comes out of the bottom, or just give it what you think is sufficient?

    • @SucsForYou
      @SucsForYou  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I used to 'flood' the pots but now I prefer to spot water like this. I will 'flush' some pots if they've been sitting in the same dirt for a long time, but since my drainage is good, I don't worry about mineral build-up the way I might with other potting situations. I do accidentally flush some of the 2" nursery pots but they dry up pretty quick ;)

      it's at 6:52; I'm wondering if you have to sort of dig it out (with something like a spoon?)? or my potting mixture is too hard and you should be able to just gently pull and they'll sort of just pop out, roots and all? if i tried to do that i would just get stem. or i might be taking it too literally! :) thanks!!

    • @SucsForYou
      @SucsForYou  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh! Okay gotcha! So yeah, you shouldn't have hard soil- try breaking up with a chopstick to aerate. You'll need to dig them out a bit if the roots are established. Then wait a couple days before watering any plant you uproot to repot so the roots have time to heal - water getting into broken roots, leaves, stems, etc, is a sure-fire way to get root-rot ;) Does that all make sense?

    • @NatashaCreatesThings

      Sucs For You! yes thank you so much! I'm new to succulents and definitely wouldn't have waited to water - thanks! will also try the chopstick idea - i think mix is too hard (it just seems to harden as time goes by). thx!!

      Just keep an eye on them - if they're not drying out fast enough - say within 3-5 days, you may want to either put a fan on them or temporarily unpot anything extra special just to be safe.

I tried all I could to encourage pollination but I'm not sure when to pluck of the flowers. Right now some of them are starting to dry up. Should I do it now? Hi Paulina! Thanks so much!!! It's super great to hear you're finding these vids helpful!! So, I'm pretty sure most flowers will form seed pods distinctively different from the flowers. I suggest you read this (forums.gardenweb.com/discussions/1809684/haworthia-101) to get a better idea of the pollination and seed gathering process :) It's really helpful stuff! One other thing to note is some plants are not self-pollinating so they need a genetically different plant to cross with. Good luck and keep me posted on the pod-progress :)

    Boy, you're stingy Andrea....
    My succs get a good dunking every week during the hot weather, every two weeks the rest of the time and they lap it right up!
    Roots need oxygen as well as water - forcing the water up from the bottom creates air holes throughout the soil. Watering topsoil every times compacts the soil making it hard for roots to get oxygen. I fertilize every other watering until September.
    Those clay pots you use leech the nutrients from the soil...fertilize often! White calcium deposits on the stems are a problem - any suggestions?

LoL on the funnel jumping from your hand :) I recently re potted some lambs tail babies propagated from leafs and I noticed the pot I keep more dry is not doing that well, do the seedlings need more water than the mature plants? That funnel.. 😂.. if by seedlings you mean propagated babies, I'd just say be patient. Burro's Tail/Donkey Tail/Lamb's Tail / Sedum morganianum is a slow grower for me here and others elsewhere - where are you located?

    • @fificorina

      Yes they are propagated babies but I divided them and pot them in 3 different clay pots, 2 of them I water more often and the leaves are nice and plump but the 3rd one is in a different room so is kinda gets dry and the leaves are shriveled. I live in Canada and grow my plants in the window sill.
