Referring to the baking soda and salt toothpaste,my grandmother brushed her teeth with only baking soda, she passed away with all of her teeth
My great grandmother used baking soda to brush her teeth and she passed away in her 90s with all her teeth.. Flossing is actually many, many, more times important than just brushing alone...
She probably had dentures and you didn't know, LOL
@@djmenace3646 no, I knew, I was old enough to pay attention to things like that
My dad died at 91 with all his teeth and brushed with baking soda.

Right, but we knew how dirty actual conditions were in that environment.
I used to sit next to a coworker who had a very strong odor. Nobody understood why. Later, I overheard her say that she rode her horse every morning (and obviously didn't change clothes, or shower).
@@cateclism316 Anybody that owns and rides horses totally understand that and definitely aren't offended by it or not really caring who is ....just saying .
The way the world is evolving we will be living like that again pretty soon.
It’s like that now go downtown any city and take a lung full of air wipe your eyes and look at the homeless cowboys had it good compared to now
@stevenS, Back then, if you didn't work, you didn't eat. Yes there were orphans and people without a home but they worked for someone who gave them room and board. A lot of people now with their cry baby ways would just cease to exist in an environment of that nature.
Bet it smelled like a modern day city bus. Some people still do not practice good hygiene
Even the worse bus is nothing like those day.
Probably smelled like raw sewage, or just imagine being on a bus full of people that just finished eating baked beans and deviled eggs.
Some cowboys were obsessed for cleanliness and would even take two or three baths a year!

On their birthday and Christmas!
Now I know why cowboys were always in a bad mood!😂

Funny how we sometimes say,”if only I could go back in time,”. This little cache of historical hygiene or lack thereof, would tend to kill that idea, quick smart! I’m so glad I live in this current era, 2020’s!
Except when people say that, they usually mean the 1950's, 1960's, 1970's or the 1980's.
I wouldn’t want to go back to anytime before air conditioning or modern dentistry.
Imagine all that filth yet we are the ones who had COVID-19! 😂
As the narrator mentioned in his closing statement, we are very fortunate to have the ability to practice good hygiene today. So grateful to all who came before us and helped to blaze the trail.
There are always drawbacks. Good hygiene also leads to a compromised immune system.

Ahh," the good ole' days". History always looks more rosy than it actually was.
The "back to the simple life" environmentalist types are so terribly detached from all of the real-world things that drove Americans to seek the things that we today think of as "basic living conditions." To those folks back then, nearly every citizen in in America today lives in the most luxurious conditions. But the one thing you're forgetting, your sense of smell would be used to it, and a strong perfume would make you nuts faster. Africa doesn't have a lot of deodorant, but they don't really stink that bad. No wonder Marshal Dillon didn't marry Miss Kitty.
My favorite: when movies set in this time, or earlier (sometimes centuries earlier) and the people look like models, in terms of hair, teeth, skin, and fashion.

I’d imagine oral sex was out of the question, but I would probably be wrong.
Ewwwww…….the horror!
Yep. Probably the reason most of the sex was just standing up, brief and anonymous.
I suppose the "decent" crowd back then wore their clothes at all times, including procreation.
You are correct. So little oral sex took place, the Herpes virus mutated into two genetically distinct strains; HSV-1 (cold sores) which developed in and was spread by the mouth, and HSV-2 (the STD known as “herpes”) which developed in and was spread through the genital region. The symptoms of both are near identical.
Thanks to the relatively recent popularity of oral sex within the last few generations (from the sexual liberation of the 1960s to present-day), both strains are now found in either region of the body. In the US, 50-80% of the population has oral herpes (most often acquired by sharing food/drinks with parents during early childhood). One in six adults in the US currently has genital herpes of either the HSV-1 or HSV-2 variety.
That modern, clean mouth most likely has had herpes present in it since the age of two. Enjoy!!

When I was about 4 years f of age, I lived with my parents in the airport " Apartments" in Davenport, Iowa. I was a feral child, and roamed outdoors as I felt necessary. One hot July day in about 1943, I suffered a significant sunburn on my Ears!. As a natural redhead, I was indeed susceptible to that malady. A neighbor, a hillbilly, noticed my reddening ears, and applied a folk remedy to the afflicted ears. Gob of chawed tobacco! It seemed to do the trick, and he admonished my mother to "get the child a HAT!" She did! I am now over 83 tears of age, and have not cancer of the ears!
I remember reading a book called "The Good ol' Days, they were Terrible."
After this video -- I'm 'gonna brush my teeth; take a shower; and guzzle a GALLON OF HAND SANITIZER! Now back to you, Mr. Clean! * Cav *

Where the heck did you get the artwork for this video? It's great!
Actually, it's lousy. Very unauthentic. Take a look at some photographs sometime.
@@formwiz7096 I think you can say the same for the majority of art. Yet people still like it for some reason.
I missed nothing. A filthy body smells awful, male or female.

Funny thing about my dad(God Rest His Soul). He had a love affair with the Old West, often saying that he would have liked to live in that era.
Problem was, my dad was a bit of a hygiene freak, who took a hot bath & shower every single day of his life, and cleaned our house on a regular basis, as if it were a model home.
And so, I don't believe he ever realized how diametrical opposed his cowboy fantasies were to his clean-freak nature.
James Butler “Wild Bill” Hickok bathed everyday. Of course, it didn’t protect him from an STD.
Still , the folks were much healthier then than today ... Free of plastics, chemicals or radiation . Clean water streams, creeks and lakes. Hard and rugged lifestyle, but highly rewarding where modesty, scarcity and simple small things made everyone filled with joy of life
No they weren't. Lifespans were short, childhood mortality was very high, teeth were pulled vs. repaired, surgeries for even common events of today were unknown. Broken limbs often meant lifelong deformities. Mental health issues were rife and masked with alcohol. Zero worker protections against hazardous environments. People often had several children knowing that some wouldn't make it to early adulthood. Visit any cemetery from the 1800's....very common to see mothers buried next to newborns because of difficulties during birth.
Again, people were much healthier than today , due to natural selection and survival of the fittest ... Many of our ancestors never got sick during their entire life... Yes , lifespan was shorter due to hard work and lifestyle , but general mental health was far far better than today. People were modest, warm hearted, content with the smallest things, religious, and above all, full of love for the neighbour . Cancer , refined sugar, processed food, environmental radiation, tooth decay, obesity, pesticides, herbicides, chemicals, ozone layer holes, unpredictable weather tantrums and gremlins... all were almost unknown categories
@@sonjavukoja4936 Again, you're wrong. You have zero data to support that many of our ancestors never got sick. Of course, they did..much was just undiagnosed. Child mortality in 1860 was 343 per thousand, which meant that 343 children out of a thousand never saw age 5. Average lifespan in 1860 was just shy of 40. That's a poor metric of success. You have no data to support that mental health was far far better--you're simply making it up. "full of love for their neighbor" You really need to do some reading of life in the American West. Start with the Meadows Massacre of 1857. The weather tantrums? What are you even talking about?
People were lucky to make it to 40. Where are you getting this rubbish from?
@@weirdshibainu I don't know about the US but the pioneers in South Africa were rugged healthy individuals. Lived long lives. Many reached 90. The biggest problem wasn't hygene or disease (except those that crossed the limpopo). It was the Matabele and Zulu tribes.
This healthy trend also lasted until the late 19th century. The English who came over mentioned a lot about the massive size of the Boers. That is until the Boer War when 27 000 of our women and children died of disease and hunger in camps.
They'll probably do a thing like this in 200 years time saying how unhygienic we are today.
Okay…going to take a shower now…bye! 👋

U covered it fairly well, but U forgot about the Cowboy's love life often involved animals, AND, other cowboys( Brokeback Mtn wasn't just a racy, risque' movie) Syphylis was known to be spread from sheep/goats centuries prior. Add poor hygiene w/Beastiality, & U get a mess. Bath-tubs were considered so un-hygienic up until 1920's, that one was required to have doctor's orders( in some cities) and grapevine rumors may have carried it farther into rural areas. Also, sepsis( blood poisoning/infection was leading cause of deaths during Civil War). I, personally, have known of "out-houses" still in use in 2009. So, humans are not as clean as we want to believe. My wife retired as a house-keeper in dorms of large, well-known university in 2018. And the stories she related to me, underscores that as a human race, we haven't even gotten close to clean habits!!!
I bet those college boys kept her busy !

I love the over-the-top artwork. Hilarious.
Don't forget, in order to create just ONE ice cube, you needed a contraption that took up half a barn.
Damn, now I've got to take another shower after watching this!
Very interesting video! But, completely separate from the 'Hygiene in the Old West' topic, I'd like to hear about the process you used to get an A.I. to generate all those great, imaginative illustratiions. (What your actual prompts to the A.I. were; how many different iteration-cycles you had to ask it for, etc.)
In the movies they portray people all clean with white clothes on. It really wasn't like that. Even in places like New York things weren't so great. They used to clear millions of pounds of manure out of the streets every day. People didn't treat their animals well either. If the horse was hurt or couldn't go on anymore, they would just shoot them and leave them dead in the street. I thank God for our modern conveniences.
"Imagine The Farts."
Great video. I also wondered about the hygiene in those times, actually in all eras.
Wild West smelled liked a subway station in NYC.
0:39 isn't that what Los Angeles streets are like today?
I can imagine the aromas all over, and people very likely made pigs smell good.
Dingleberries as big as wombats.
Just imagine underwear worn for a month before unceremoniously washing. Cowboys didn't carry suitcases with extra clothes on them, even in the movies, but everyone thinks these masculine men stayed clean--somehow.
I am shocked! The movies and TV had it all wrong.
Apparently the narrator has no idea how actual soap is made.
Not to mention their dentistry. You should see the tools they used back then. I wouldn't wish anybody a toothache back then.🤣
So it’s like every liberal city in the US?
FACT👆👆👆👆👆👆
If you live in a city that does not regulate public spitting get it updated. Many US cities allow this while European and Asian do not. Recent dental research has shown that it is the regular brushing not the substance used that helps oral health. The scented ingredients are more for a nicer odor for the person and those around them. Baking soda can also scratch the teeth of some. We also need a lot less toothpaste than those who sell it would lead us to believe, a pea sized amount is good. Toothpaste is considered a cosmetic and not regulated by the FDA, just has minimums. They are not tested by the FDA, notice all the claims on the tube? Modern powdered toothpaste does the job and Colgate still sells a powder in a tin container. Most toothpaste containers are now recyclable, Earth 911.

I don't believe it. Have you ever watched Bonanza or The Rifleman. The town is always clean.
