    Glad you found a paper that you like. I have the same canon printer as well, but I use two different papers. Also I still see that you have to cut by hand. I use a paper cutter called Carl DC-250. I made a video about it, because I've been following this channel for a while. I sent you something on IG as well.

    Hi, assume you got a lot of this sorted, but in case not, a few tips.
    Matte papers take a few days for the colors to mature. Sometimes, after a week they seem even a touch better and richer. Best to leave them dry properly for the first 24 hours, before handling, even trimming. Most of the time you can get away with it, but sometimes it leaves marks and abrasions on the paper,.
    When you want to excel with your prints, it is really important to use a good profile. For Canon this is easy, however some still prefer to make their own using a lab for the readings. Canson provides good profiles for their papers.
    The Canon Fine Art Smooth and Rough papers are very nice. The rough paper is warmer. Sometime you can get them on sale for half off.
    Take the time to learn different papers from different companies. Experiment with sheet fed papers as much cheaper, and you can sometimes buy 10 packs of sheet feds. The sampler packs are good, but 2 sheets of each is not really enough. First thing is to run one of the standard test prints out there, however make sure that you get one using a Adobe Pro profile, as this makes a difference for testing how out of gamut colors are compressed (perceptual vs relative), which is an option when you print.
    If using Windows, make sure that the printer driver has manage colors turned off (not on auto). This can make a big difference, as auto does not always work. Then use the Canon Professional Print and Layout software (which is free) for testing, as it removes any variables, before you use photoshop / lightroom . capture one to print from.
    The Fine Art canon papers are quite good. The Matte and even the Premium matte are just ok. Again look for the sales - such as on B&H photography to start with.
    While the Canson papers can cost quite a bit more, they are worth exploring as well. Some of the Canson papers tend to be more sensitive to abrasion, but that extra 5% can be like wow!
    I know all this takes time, but it is so worth it. Getting all the fine points tweaked, including any tweaking of your color space and shadow compression for printing; you can turn a print from like just ok, to magic, something you want to look at for hours, that you did that!

    This is the second video I've watched from your channel and honestly, I'm extremely glad I've found you. Compared to many artists I've watched, you went into so many details about numbers, your process and the hard truth about being an artist without glorifying it. For the past one and a half year, I've been a bit aimless about my art business/career and even though I get commissioned from time to time, I still want to push forward and sell prints in the future. Thank you so much for making these kind of contents. I'm looking forward to see more of you videos

    It's so frustrating finding the perfect paper, work out pricing and color balance...then to find out it's being discontinued!! Arghh. I feel for you. I just got a Canon Pixma Pro 200 and almost cried trying to get it to work the first day....all because there are too many settings. I still can't get it to print an A4 matte photo paper, it wants there to be bigger margins!?? So frustrating. Oh a tip about your framing, I used to do a lot of it, make sure to wipe that glass with windex first and inspect for any tiny bits, then important, put some kind of acid free heavy paper or board between your print and that cardboard, it will turn yellow over the years.

  • @michelecaira2367
    @michelecaira2367 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have always had a preference for prints on a matt paper as opposed to semi or full gloss finishes because colours seem to pop that much more, as is demonstrated and proven in this video. Well done !!!

    Your videos are so amazing! Very relatable, very clear directions and tips, lots of walk through steps! I have been working with the pro-1000 and I felt that's what I should start at. I use breathing color paper and I love it. You can get media samples and ICC profiles. I think alot of people forget about sample offers so artists don't have to buy a whole role to test. I love your journey and it's truly inspiring. Keep going and I'm down to chop it up and exchange art techniques.

  • @donatfairs204
    @donatfairs204 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's a trade off between various media. The canvas texture gives the print a more painting quality look. But because it's not a true white the colors are slightly muted. The new paper adds a more bright saturation of color so it works well. You took into consideration the selling price to the customer. So that's a positive move.

  • @likeawhispr
    @likeawhispr 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Careful with the Canon papers or cheaper papers, since many of them aren't acid free and OBA (optical brightener agents /chemical brighteners) and unfortunately Canon doesn't disclose it on the packaging. You want your prints to last long so be sure to lean more toward the archival, heavier GSM papers for your art. Keep up the great channel!

    Canvas is not a 'Paper'. It is canvas material. I specialise in reproducing large artworks and have to use gloss or satin canvases to match the sheen of acrylic and oil paints and get vivid colours with dense blacks: 440gsm Breathing Color Crystalline gloss canvas and 36gsm Epson Water Resistant 'Signature Worthy' Satin Artists Canvas. The Epson is very cost effective and is used by museums world wide!

    Printing on paper is usually higher perceived resolution and the colors tend to look better. I personally prefer printing on textured paper over canvas (though I do offer both options to my clients)

    Hey Melissa, I'm with you in missing the satin finish and fabric flop of the canvas. Canon matte paper looks great, though. I know you would never choose a product that compromised your quality in any way whatsoever. You set your bar high and stick to it. Question: since buying your fine art printer, will you be doing prints for other artists in your local area and/or by mail? That would be another stream of revenue for you, if you could keep it from taking too much time and energy from your own art practice. I was just thinking it would be a privilege for other artists to get their works printed by you, with your discerning eye and commitment to uppermost quality. Looking forward to the next video. Much love and light from Louisiana.

    Sis call Canson! Canson and for Canson rep Lon Dekker. Also the pricing of your work should reflect the quality of your work. Either you make up for the cost of the more expensive papers in volume or you just have to raise your prices. If your work was being repped by a gallery you'd have to raise your prices to reflect the gallery commission fees.
    Look at yourself/studio as an in-house gallery and price your pieces at reasonable yet appropriate prices for both gallery and your studio.
    Also are you numbering your prints? If not you should be ink signing (with the © symbol) and numbering your prints.
    If you're doing a limited edition runs on more expensive papers with the higher prices.

    Personally I would rather have archival quality paper than canvas. Your prints look great on canvas but when i think of current canvas prints I think of wall hangings already framed or stretched. Keeping those clean and free from dust can be a nightmare. So if it its going to be framed and under glass with a matt board then paper is a better bet in my opinion :)
