A Rotary has a linear power delivery, this is why Mazda went to a Sequential Turbo System. It works just perfekt. So why don’t use a sequential system with bigger Turbos if you like to have more power ? A Single Turbo Destroys that iconic feeling from a Turbo Rotary.
TheS1PikesPeak I am not speaking on behalf of all rotary owners, but I decided to go single turbo for 3 reasons -
1. Heat, the twin turbos were a really poor design for heatsoak.
2. Space, the FD engine bay was cramped as hell with the twinpack in there and doubled the amount of vaccum and boost hoses to perish and go wrong.
3. HP potential, the twins are on their limit at 350+ hp, maybe 400 max with hybrid twins. For the power gains I am looking for, it made sense to remove them and go big single. I have less heat issues, more space to work with and more power but each to their own
Sam Wardle i know what you mean, but i know 2 guys with upgraded sequential turbos. Bigger Housings, Billet Turbines with CNC Milling for fast and early Spooling. The one has 488HP 377lb torque, builds Power up from slightly above 3000rpm to the redline. The other one has a little bit smaller numbers, im not quite sure but something around 450HP and 360lb but starts boosting under ! 3000rpm. That thing drives so fu**ing awesome. So quick because no lag, just awesome.

The handling is what stands out about the RX7 - the adjustability on/near the limit. A nicely boosted rotary is fun and sounds cool in a straight line but it's just a novelty compared to how the car feels when cornering properly. That's why it's called a drivers car, and why it's still king/maou of the touge (downhill) in Japan. (Check out 'RX7 best motoring touge' on TH-cam).
Ricky to really experience this car or cars like this you need to find a decent stretch of winding hillside or open country road. You'd love it. Anyway great video, keep it up!

Very nice FD! Not too dissimilar to mine in overall setup, I've got the T04R rather than the T51R but I'm riding on BCs too! I love the drama as the boost hits above 5K RPM and the screamer pipe starts screaming :D

I miss my fd 3. I swore I would never get rid of her but even with 3mm seals i would only get 30 to 40 k miles out of it i changed my oil every 1500 miles ran pro tech in the fuel. I would say it was pretty reliable considering i really drove it hard can't complain it really is one of the most beautiful cars ever built.

I'm 39 and still dreaming of having an fd, I went in an rx2 sedan when I was 12-13 years old and that was it, rotaries are like nothing else, smooth high revs, the sound, the smell, everything about them. I want another one. Glad you got to experience an RX7 mate, I bet you'll end up with one, the look on you face was priceless, cheeky smile haha fuckn sick, awesome looking fd also mate, well done, hahaha
Nice man, I love these wankel rotary engines. I had an rx8 years ago, revved up to 10k like a beast. Only 15mpg on average for 250bhp though and constant topping up of oil. Every 3 tanks of fuel it needed an oil top up.
So much work to get these up on bhp as not many specialise in them. But they handle beautifully, so well balanced, light and easy to drift. I'm tempted to pick up another cheap rx8.
Also, although it's a 1.3 wankel rotary my insurance had it down as a 2.6 as that's the equivalent power and it wasn't recognized. Quite hard to insure if you are looking and road tax is same as a lambo. £480 a year when I had mine 5 years back.

I love how much power these engines give for the size of it. It's the stuff you mentioned which puts a lot of people off especially how insurers list a bigger engine size. I take it road tax now is around £570 for this. This government likes to take our money.
Road tax will be upto 540 now then as my 3 Mps is that😂 bend n part to the government every year
These cars are so narrow.i love them, but having pretty broad shoulders, i couldn’t shut the door without pulling my shoulder in, when i sat in one and couldn’t get comfortable.
A lot of people take the door cards out and get custom flat ones made, which helps.
Beautiful car, starting to go up in value now, for a good one.I think a low mileage type RS is around 30 to 35k.

That tiny little rotary sits well back in the engine bay... makes the RX7’s & RX8’s change direction like few other front engined cars.
These 7’s were pretty cheap about 10-15 years ago, I’d put money on them becoming very valuable in the future £££
Once it's ported and has a bit more boost bring it back and watch his smile get even bigger haha. Years ago a mate had a 12a turbo mild port in rx3 sedan and it would launch off the traffic lights and lift both front wheels off the ground, the facial expressions of the passengers in the cars next to you was just, lol, what the fuck, did you see that. Ah I have to get another asap lol
love these in white. building a half bridge for mine now which as soon as the weather gets a little nicer i can finish up. nice clean build without all the fluff👍
not to shit on the car and her builder, since all the work has been done really well, but I’m not buying the “450 bhp” you are capping with. also not to say that she needs loads more power, as she’s got more than enough for the streets. for reality’s sake, let’s say that she’ll do 380 hp max before we see a dyno sheet. still, if the owner is only looking to street her, that amount of power is perfect, but the fake numbers give a weird aftertaste

Used to have a single turbo drift fd, wicked car. odd map this one has, not only does it stop revving at 8k instead of 9 or even 10, but it's got a limiter. just had the buzzer in our one.
once the next level of tune is on this car it's going to be amazing! already it looks the part, really nicely done.

I’d deff agree w when he said that FD’s are a “driver’s car.” That sums up the rx7 experience well. It’s like a go cart on the road. The way the twin turbos are set up is funny since there isn’t any power until around 3k rpm...then it builds and hits hard around 4.5k and takes off. The classic jdm turbo whine and spool makes it even more dramatic and pronounced, and a blast to drive! The contrast between low rpm to mid level once the turbos spool gives the car its soul, plus the tight handling and super low driving position isn’t comparable to much else. If u can’t tell, I miss mine...

This shape has really stood the test of time! Amazing design, and amazing build! Mazda should re-release this shape (like Chev with Camaro, Dodge with Challenger etc etc) with a Skyactiv motor, put in modern day safety equipment, of course do away with pop up headlights (Not by choice, personally I would keep it if I could) tune it to around 350hp at the crank. Price it just under the new Supra and you will have a winner!

Most people tend not to put 3000miles on them that quickly.
I daily drove mine (light engine mods 320hp, some handling and braking mods) for over a year including a couple of trips to the track & nurburgring.
I changed the plugs a couple of times (£36 a set at the time, I didnt really need to change them the 2nd time but I was tracking it) and they use 5l mineral oil which I used to get for about £15 and a £5 filter. I changed the oil maybe 3 times, but again only because I was abusing it on track in the middle of summer.
Not really expensive maintenance for the abuse it took and performance it gave back. Knowledge is the most valuable (and sometimes expensive) thing about owning a rotary.
It's on par with any tuned car otherwise, around the same time I had friends blowing engines in Imprezas, Toyota Starlet, VR6 Corrado, BMW 335 & M3's. Unless you're doing light mods on brand new cars it's the nature of the game I'm afraid
