The kind of musicality I could listen to all day. I can let my guard down and trust that every phrase will be tasteful. Enviable bow technique, perfect accent 5:50

I have spent about 40 years memorizing the 6 cello suites and finally have it done. I was going to record them like you did, but I need another 40 years of practice to match your beautiful tone and phrasing.

You should record them! I learned so much from the process. Somehow just the act of doing it was a big stepping stone. I can't take all the credit for the sound - it was in a beautiful church and the guys who recorded it did a nice job. Have fun with those suites...and thanks for your comment :)

J'ai écouté de nouveau plus attentivement la 6ème suite ,et j'apprécie singulièrement les transcriptions qui y sont opérées avec bonheur .

Truly beautiful playing, David. And what a feat! No music, no edits, just an awe-inspiring live performance. If this was the standard, there wouldn't be many videos posted! I'll have to check out Baumforth. What a lovely instrument. Congrats!

I've listened to this video many times. I have a particular love for all the suites, but especially the 6th. I've listened to the 6th (mostly the prelude) on many instruments, and I must say your performance is one of the best. Beautiful phrasing and intonation. Bravo!

I'm happy for your comment. The 6th suite is really on another level isn't it? They're all great...but it's amazing how Bach found that extra bit of magic for the last one. Take care.

@@DavidWilliamRose The 6th is my favorite as well, but I am skeptical that these suites owe their magic purely to being a creation of Bach. As a former violist, I would love to see in my lifetime a significant expansion of solo viola repertoire. I am certain that modern day professional violists and composers can create new suites that sound better, are more fun to play, and that appeal to wider audiences. What would your 7th suite sound like?

I love your playing! As a young student who enjoys playing viola a bunch, I’m not sure if going into university for a degree in classical viola is a good idea. I’m not particularly great for my age, but not bad by any means. Playing in an orchestra would be a dream job for me but i just don’t quite know if it’s a good idea. What are your thoughts on the practicality of a music degree/career? Any response would be greatly appreciated,

      Good day,
I came across your comment and thought I could share some thoughts as a current university student studying viola. Immediately, it must be said that if you feel that music is truly your passion in this life, please do pursue it. It will be a lot of hard work if your aim is to get into a professional orchestra, but it is also possible to make great progress in the four years of a standard degree with a good education. One thing to note is that you may want to consider pursuing a music education degree, especially if you are not attending a conservatory, as it is usually more widely applicable/valuable than a performance degree from say a state/national university. On the topic of a music career, I have heard from professional players that symphonic orchestral musicians can have very good careers, but also consider options such as ballet/opera orchestras and even chamber orchestras or quartets, as there are many groups that you may be able to join. Don't doubt yourself and practice efficiently, not mindlessly, but always remember to enjoy the journey. These things are possible, and I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors.
(P.S. Practice your scales and etudes diligently, as these are some of the best tools for technical development. With the right foundation, mastery is within your reach.)

Very kingly sounding prelude for #5, very well done. Though it is a shame the police ruined the opening for #6 sarabande

Thank you for your kind comment! Yeah....there was also some chatter or something at the end of the 2nd suite prelude! But oh well...I'm happy you liked it!

Iizukas made to order for how much? Projecting/resonance issues almost sound solved, worth it just for the ergonomics too.

    • @DavidWilliamRose
      @DavidWilliamRose  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi there - this viola is not an Izuka, but made by Alan Baumforth. He still makes violas (he and his wife Sarah). It is very resonant, and does project very well. The Izukas are so lovely also. I've never met one which didn't sound wonderful.

Je suis retourné à l'écoute de votre concert ,et manifestement ,l'instrument n'est pas monté sur boyau .

    • @DavidWilliamRose

Спасибо! I made my own edition, which is probably fairly close to the Peter's edition for viola (edited by Rowland-Jones). A number of my bowings are different though, and a few notes. I'm glad you liked the video.

3 1/2 memory slips in the second half of the prelude right off the bat? Such a shame, that right hand is like butter.
