@@iananderson3799 it's a great comment...criminally underrated, really. Also, Jethro Tull sucks and you didn't deserve that Grammy. Go back to bed, grampa.
02.09.2017: The Wolf is teaching the Tigress. When I was young, I worked in a dry cleaning plant for a man named Joe Rodriguez. The lessons I learned from him all those years ago have saved my life these past ten years: You keep yourself well groomed. You keep your surroundings clean and orderly. You keep your bills paid. You move with economy, and be quiet when possible. You spare your energy for the work, and then you work and work and work and work. We're going to survive, and we're going to find joy in it. Thank you, Mr. Rodriguez
Great guys. Great band...STILL! Most of the guys, I think five of them, played at my house & Halloween Party in San Diego 1984 with the Beat Farmers! Fun days!
Grr8.. Love. Story on. Video...the. Vocalist And. Close. Back beat By drummer... Grr8!! This one is immortal... Like. Layla..Kashmir.freebird ..the last farewell.. U. Know The. Icons ..this one Stands shoulders with!!!
I went to see them last weekend in Eugene Oregon. I have to say I was disappointed. They played exactly two songs from there catalogue, "Will the Wolf Survive" and "La Bamba." The rest was new stuff and jamming. Now I understand that playing the same music for decades can be boring. But why did they have to do all that hippie jam band crap? Eugene has hippie jam-banders literally everywhere. We can see them any damn time. They even played a Grateful Dead cover which we REALLY didn't show up at a los Lobos concert to hear. In 2009 or 10 I saw them and it was wonderful. I'll never forget that show. Maybe they should stop touring if they don't want to play what we want to hear. I mean, REALLY.
It is sad to think back to the time this song was recorded in so many ways! The world was simply saner then, and musically there were so many new bands and sounds to discover! Walking into a record store and flipping through albums you were bombarded with new music that you wanted to hear more of! Now, popular music has devolved into an endless series of “one hit wonders” that spew out singles like sausages being produced at a factory. Kids today have no idea what they missed…….☹
Saw them just last night at The Bowery Ballroom, New York City. The warmth, the spirit, the humor, the fun and the music are all still there....after all this time. A bit of East L.A. on the lower east side. Only brilliant.
Love and respect every one of these talented musicians! Struggling from East L.A. California, but they've stayed together and have sang and created awesome music; like "Will the Wolf Survive"? have been back stage with them in Austin and in Germany and Zurich! They are so well respected and loved and around the World! Los Lobos for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
David Hidalgo as the cook at 2:55. The man can literally do it all! I would love to meet him some day. Singer, writer, accordion, violin, 6-string banjo, cello, requinto jarocho, percussion, drums and guitar. Simply unreal.
My dad loved this band, this song brings me back to when I grew up in the mid 80’s and early 90’s. It’s funny how music can bring you back to the timeline of your life....
One of the best songs ever. Great musicians, great singers, and great great songwriters!! "It's the truth that they all look for - something they must keep alive"

Wow ! I haven't heard this since the 80's. A co-worker bought me this Cassette back in the day. Thanks for Posting so others can Hear & Enjoy. Thankyou Randy for Introducing me to Los Lobos.
I saw them open for U2 in Toronto's CNE Stadium in 1987, in front of 60 000 people. They were great then and I just downloaded their new album, and they are still sounding fantastic in 2021.
Written by Los Lobos members Louie Perez and David Hidalgo, and produced by T Bone Burnett, Perez had this to say.... “The song really was inspired by the cover of a National Geographic magazine. There was a picture of a wolf, and the title of the piece was, ‘How Can the Wolf Survive?’. When we started throwing the idea for the song around, David Hidalgo was walking around the room with an acoustic guitar, singing melodies or whatever, and he came up with sort of a skeletal version of the lyrics, a chorus I believe, and started a verse, and I ran the rest of the way with it.” “If you look at the last verse of the song, it’s definitely about this movement that was happening around the U.S. then, being called ‘punk rock’ or the ‘new music’ movement or whatever. It was about a camaraderie that was going on among bands, like when a communal truck would get somebody to a gig and load out and take another band somewhere else. It was a community of young people who were no longer gonna follow the track that had been laid out by the record companies.” The final verse: "Sounds across the nation Coming from your hearts and minds Battered drums and old guitars Singing songs of passion It’s the truth that they all look for Something they must keep alive Will the wolf survive?" “The other verses, and the overall thing, is about trying to sustain something that we all believed in and that we see slipping away. We Mexican-Americans saw the importance of preserving our culture, and of passing along the traditions of our fathers. So it’s all of that wrapped up into one song. But it’s about America … I always thought of myself as an American kid. I grew up on Carl Reiner sitcoms. It all becomes kind of intuitive. Stuff bubbles to the top when the time calls for it. All of it is instilled into that one song.” In 1986 Waylon Jennings cut the song as the title track of one of his albums. “It was great!” Perez said of Jennings’ take on the tune. “Tony Joe White introduced him to the song, took the record over to him one day, and Waylon recorded his own version.”
I love hearing how songs are created. Thanks for a great song. It always seemed sad to me about how the wolf must survive against elements and predators. But it survives because it's strong. Great band, great song.
Los Lobos -- Always and forever marvelous. The music will survive and flourish. And we hope, so will the wolf. And so will whatever the wolf symbolizes in this song....

My pops bumped into one of the members of Los lobos when he was walking his dog to take a shit, staffy, during the early 80s in London before they were big, they were doing a gig at The Albany in London. The fella was big into his dogs too and they struck up a conversation about dogs and guy from Los Lobos gave him tickets for the gig. He said it was brilliant. Very true, they are a LOUD band. First time I saw them I found that out for myself. Second time I brought some earplugs and they worked like a charm. I haven't heard them play this live but if they did so, it would have to be in the encore. Perfect song!
Yeah, definitely. I remember how good a live band they were. I've seen a lot of bands that, while good in the studio and still have my loyalty, just weren't that good live. Los Lobos didn't start to sound the same or otherwise get boring after a couple of tunes. Great package with mixing it up, plenty of energy and tight.
I know you wrote this two years ago and all, but I feel the need to say this: Los Lobos' version of "La Bamba" is pretty damn amazing. Then again, an awesome band can cover pretty much any song and make it fantastic.
They also do a superb version of the Cuban song "Guantanamera" that is true to the original Cuban rhythm, unlike the watered-down versions by Seeger/Sandpipers etc.
On this day in 1985 {April 13th} Los Lobos performed "Will the Wolf Survive" on the ABC-TV program 'American Bandstand'... At the time the song was at #87 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; the week before it was at #78 and that was also its peak position on the Top 100... It had entered the Top 100 on March 17th, 1985 at #84 and spent a total of 5 weeks on the chart... Los Lobos had two* other Top 100 records; "Come On, Let's Go" {#21 in 1987} and "La Bamba" {#1 for 3 weeks, beginning on August 23rd, 1987}... * Of course the two records were from the Richie Valens bio-movie 'La Bamba'...
Los Lobos are type-cast with La Bamba but are so much more..... That song only helped lauch them but La Bamba is just the tip of the iceberg for Los Lobos. I have seen these guys twice in the last twenty years and know they are very much under-rated. Looking foward to their show tomorrow night here in southeast Texas. Will post again very soon....
@KentarEast I'm 54 and I think about this song and the good times in the 80's and the even better times in the 70's before corporations ruled the earth.
I wish we heard more Los Lobos in Australia. The audience just don't get it down here. Surely I'm not alone. The more I hear them, the more I like them.
David Hildago has a tremendous voice.
His voice are similar Ritchie Valenz
I played with los lobos back in the 80's , my band opened shows for them , at the time they were total rock stars around here and we were in awe of them( Boston Ma) they were all amazing musicians and very nice guys , they had this roadie named Mouse , he was a really really cool dude he made sure we had a good time and took the time to help us and our crew out

Saw them like 4 times. Some of the very best concerts I've ever seen.

IMHO Los Lobos rank up with The Band in their seamless blending of roots music with rock 'n roll sensibilities.

The final verse:
"Sounds across the nation

Singing songs of passion
It’s the truth that they all look for
Something they must keep alive
Will the wolf survive?"
“The other verses, and the overall thing, is about trying to sustain something that we all believed in and that we see slipping away. wow, thank you for sharing this.
I didn't know much about Los Lobos, but then I accidentally saw a show of theirs for free in San Francisco. I had no idea how awesome this band is!
Los Lobos -- Always and forever marvelous. The music will survive and flourish.
And we hope, so will the wolf. And so will whatever the wolf symbolizes in this song....
My new favorite old song
When he sings "standing in the pouring rain..." I break down in tears every time❤
Los Lobos were an integral part of the L.A. 'jangle pop' scene of the early eighties that brought such great bands like The Plimsouls, The Rain Parade, The Three O'clock, and The Dream Syndicate. A great time and place for real music. it makes me sad what we have put up with in today's disposable music scene.
+Garrett Johnson Los Lobos is as vital and creative today as they ever were. Take heart, brother.
'Colossal Head' is a brilliant album.
+Garrett Johnson I just saw Los Lobos play this weekend - they were still amazing as ever - stole the show!
C.J. Dennett It's hard to contain that much awesomeness.
1983, Los Lobos and the Blasters at the Whisky a Go Go. They were rocking, bluesy and loud as hell. Definitely not a jangle pop band, then or now.
Oh man, first time seeing them live was one Spring Weekend at URI. People were like "Who is this band?" Can't remember exactly when, but tune hadn't even been written yet. Great band, got everybody movin'!
Los Lobos...truly one of the greatest bands of all time!

I have attended several Los Lobos concerts and I think I have all of their albums. An awesome message and great sound.
What a re-discovery! Still does it...
Great Band...reminds me of old times and who I am today
Hard core GOP-Conservative guy here who just so happens to be first generation Mexican-American. In these volatile times, politically speaking, and with all the rhetoric regarding immigration and it's laws (which I support), I dedicate this song to those who may have come in illegally but in their hearts, have a purpose to better themselves. The apple doesn't fall from the tree. For you see; my parents came in the exact way but with noble dreams to genuinely better themselves. The road was rough and tumultuous but they adapted, improvised and overcame. Heck, I can even remember when I didn't know a lick of English. Tough issue this immigration thing you know. How can I ever forget my parents struggles and their humble beginnings. In any event, this song touches me on a grand scale. Love you Mom and Pop.

Great stuff. Los Lobos are music heritage for us all!
trite, sweet, beautiful. a texano fairytail in three chords and three verses. so powerful. I love it.
kick ass video. I like dave's cameo as the grill man. They are LA's hometown heroes..proud mexicans from East LA playing their roots rock-tex-mex tunes. One of the greatest rock bands from the Los Angeles area.
What a Great band, and tons of awesome music over the years timeless 🐺😎

Simple question, simple answer: the wolf DID survive, thank you Los Lobos!
Timeless and awesome band! Great guitars for this great song!
Viva Los Lobos!!!
Great tune always liked this tune
Best Band in more than just this rock of a country. They can blow most bands off the stage anywher anytime.
Very true, they are a LOUD band. First time I saw them I found that out for myself. Second time I brought some earplugs and they worked like a charm. I haven't heard them play this live but if they did so, it would have to be in the encore. Perfect song!
Awesome song. Great video. I hadn’t seen or heard it in years till outlaw country played it.
Los Lobos and Randy Newman always reminded me of home.
Great band one of my favorite songs!
Listening to this song reminds me of Arthur Morgan's story in Red Dead Redemption II. My dad played it a lot during my childhood.
I bought this album...Loved it!
Great vocals! Great band!
Still one of my all time favorite songs and albums!!!
Such a soulful band. 72 people thumbs down because they have no soul.
Only the best can sing this song Los Lobos and Waylon are hard to top
The title track from the first tape I ever bought, inspired by their work on La Bamba. Great track.
Yeah, definitely. I remember how good a live band they were. I've seen a lot of bands that, while good in the studio and still have my loyalty, just weren't that good live. Video AND song are fantastic
I believe the album itself got quite a bit higher in the charts, I've seen a May 1985 Hot 100 listing where it was at #29.
Terrific song as good now as the day i first heard it.
Love these guys
Bought the album to get this song, and got to see them open for the Grateful Dead!
Should see them live, had such a great time.Got into the music and forgot who I was partying with.
The greatest rock & roll band in the world. The Stones & Beatles agree. They have everything & you can dance to it.
Great song and a great band. They did all the music for the movie La Bamba
The lyrics make this song.
What a singer and guitar player David Hidalgo is...
Great band, great song.

This is an Awesome song, I Love it!!
@KentarEast I'm 54 and I think about this song and the good times in the 80's and the even better times in the 70's before corporations ruled the earth.
What's So Funny 'Bout Peace, Love, & Wolves On the Run?
I wish we heard more Los Lobos in Australia. The audience just don't get it down here. Surely I'm not alone. The more I hear them, the more I like them.
I think you need to have some sort of contact with la cultura. I'm from Los Angeles, so ...
This is a great band
