UO Jazz professor passes on art of jazz, simplifies Giant Steps for students

  • Simplifying Giant Steps and imparting the traditions of jazz through piano. Keith L. Brown, assistant professor of jazz and contemporary piano music at the University of Oregon School of Music and Dance, has established himself as one of the most sought-after pianists in contemporary jazz. Keith Brown works with grad students Delos Erikson and Julian Borkowski, imparting lessons they take from his studio to rehearsals to performances at Eugene’s Jazz Station venue.
    That progression-of learning from others-was a key element in Brown’s development as an artist. “When I was learning and playing with someone who was on a different level, there’s a moment of, ‘Oh! That’s what that’s supposed to sound like,’” Brown says. “So, that’s what I hope-they feel that connection.”
