When I started to play my first Chopin Etude my teacher was like: “which should we start with? Let’s just pick the first and go in order”. I did not know what was awaiting me.
Don’t go with order the first and second one is so difficult is water fall and chroniqueurs
My favorite etude has to be the op. 10 no. 4. For me, it is the perfect mix between technical difficulty and deep emotions, as one doesn't cancel the other. It sounds like pure rage, like as if someone is full of anger and is just pouring notes on the piano, barely worried with the musical and harmonic sense. It's as if the piece itself doesn't try to sound good; the only reason for it is to pour out the rage that poisons the players heart. There were many instances where this piece just talked to me in a way

Su música tiene mucho poder, es ira, es una tormenta, y a la vez mezcla esa furia con una sutil melancolía la cual está encubierta entre esos sentimientos iracundos. I do not get that impression. Part of your perception is also reflection of your character and life experience. I do not see this etude as the expression of human anger, but that of a torrent, mother nature in its expressive fury but not human rage. The chromatic middle section which continues the furious flow of the torrent especially accentuates the never ending forceful flow of the water. The only human aspect that i detect is at points where the fury builds up and some chords harmony indicates desperation. This lead me to think the music represents someone taken away by a raging torrent and unable to escape the furious flow. The last page especially with the repeated chromatic descend that keep on getting lower down (underwater) and the very last line is the last gasp before drowning.
@@ericastier1646 I am an arduous defender of the idea that one can has the interpretation he desires of a piece; specifically because how one interprets and imagines a piece is extremely dependant of their lives, expieriences and personality. What I would say though, is for you to avoid having your interpretation based on the title of the piece, specifically because not only Chopin did not create the nickname for this piece, but also abhorred the idea of someone giving titles to his pieces. Many of his pieces received titles as such, and one of the reasons why so many classical musicians hate them is because they can lead astray the interpreters. Take, for exemple, the Étude Op. 10 No. 3, nicknamed "Tristesse", meaning sadness in french; do you thing there is any hints of sadness in that piece? there are no slow sections in a minor key, which, is universally linked to sadness, there is only a middle section in E minor that resembles rage more than anything; thus, the importance of ignoring this titles, always given by someone else than the composer. I think it is extremely unlikely that Chopin had this idea in mind when he composed this work, there is reserched proof that Chopin saw music quite similarly to the young Beethoven, in the sense that both saw music as a medium to itself; the meaning of music being itself, that is. Furthermore, both saw music as a way to express their feelings and emotions, which is proved, in the case of Chopin, by numerous works, directly linked to events of his tragic life; for more information, watch the video from the researcher Alan Walker on Chopin's stay at Mallorca. In this same lesson, Walker explains how Chopin disliked the idea of programmatically representing things in the form of music, more especially the matters of nature; there is even evidance that after the composition of the Prelude Op. 28 No. 15, today known as the "Raindrop", Chopin denied that it was inspired in the rain, but George Sand said that he was probably indirectly by it anyway. Because of this reasons, I think Chopin really did not have that in mind when composing it, and, maybe, because of the nickname given to this piece long after its composition, it probably got stuck in your mind, like in the ones of many other people, limitng your interpretation of it to something similar. Of course, I do not want to offend you in any way, or be rude; I am just saying that perhaps this title has led your interpretation of the piece, something that can prove to be problematic in multiple occasions.

@@Henri.d.Olivoir You couldn't be more incorrect and grandiloquent on your preconceptions and assumptions on what i wrote. I am extensively learned about Chopin as you will find out. I am fully aware of these unfitting names given to some of the studies, I disagree with them. It is only by pure coincidence that my perception of Op 10 no 4 matches the given name "torrent" somewhat (but missing the drowning struggle) much before i even heard of it. I was never influenced by it. The name 'raindrop' does not match that prelude at all by the way, and George Sand in her writing tended to over-interpreted events in her own imaginary. According to her writing she had gone with her son to the distant village to buy food supplies and necessities while Chopin too febrile remained in the monastery lodge with his upright piano. A storm surprised them and they took a full day to return wet and soaked but safe and sound. Chopin had been very worried about them and meanwhile had composed that prélude. Just because it rained violently does not mean the piece had anything to do with a rain drop and it doesn't in my view.
As far as Chopin, you will find it very hard to tell me anything that i don't already know about his life, so please, don't even think that any known minute of his Mallorca island disastrous stay is unknown to me. I have read literature on his life and contemporaries and all hiscorrespondence in French. He wrote in French to his father Nicolas and in Polish of course to his fellow Polish men in Paris and to Louise his eldest sister. Car je le devine par votre anglais,

You are correct that Chopin considered his musical compositions their own self expression, like children of his, he said that he had to let each grow on their own over time to maturity before they fully developed into their full potential. Chopin never gave clues as to the inspiration of his compositions and so it is only hypothesis that they reflect personal events in his life.
Chopin's father Nicolas was close to the Polish army as he at one point taught French in an official function to some officers and even expressed desire to join Polish troops to defend against the invading Russian army, yet he also stayed in Poland because he was afraid he would be drafted in the French revolutionary army if he returned to Lorraine. This to say that Frédéric had military images in his mind from a young age. Op 10 n4 could be one of the many martial image of violence and force required in military campaigns. But the torrent image fits better with the furious flow of that study. Calling it human rage misses the signs of distress present here and there in the harmony which i could precisely locate in the score (i play this etude).
I love all of them too. But Op. 10 No. 1 and Op. 25 No. 1 are, in my opinion, the must beautiful ones. But all of Chopin‘s music is so great and beautiful in it‘s own way ❤️ 🥰
I like all of them, but my favorites are Op.10 No.3, "Tristesse" (that nickname doesn't make sense) , and Op.25 No.5, "Wrong Note". To me, the main theme in Op.10 No.3 is one of the most beautiful melodies ever and the middle section of Op.25 No.5 is just heavenly. I learned Op.10 No.3 as my first (and only) etude and was thinking about getting more experience before tackling another etude. But after watching your video, I am inspired to start another one :)

It is not a sad etude and the name does not represent the E major and dimished tonalities. The indicated tempo 100 seems wrong, but some people play it like a funeral march which means: much too slow. The melodic line improves when applying a little rubato where the notes have a stress mark -- just playing them a millisecond later than expected. ...And usually, the B section is played much more agitated and fast, spicing up the mood. )
I really believe that op10 no3 has the most beautiful melody (or at least the most beautiful melody I found so far) - it's just a nostalgic feeling. For me it's the definition of "Don't be sad that it's over, be happy that it happened", like you have to say goodbye to a good friend and remember all the good times you spend together

To answer your question, the name doesn't fit because I don't think Op.10 No.3 is a sad piece at all. It is on a major key and the main theme melody evokes good feelings, of tenderness, nostalgia and beauty. The middle part is also not sad, starting with a nice upbeat theme and growing to a confusing and intense climax in the "con bravura" part, that has the diminished chords being played as double siths pairs. I think Op.10 No.6 is the etude that should have that "tristesse" name, or maybe Op.25 No.7.

My favorite étude is Op. 25 No. 6. I was mesmerized the first day I heard it played by Umi Garrett, and I was determined to learn how to play it. That was the first Chopin étude I learned how to play 😊

My favorite Etude is Op 10 No 12, I feel that it is very very deep, much deeper than many people actually think it is, it expresses courage in such a beautiful way
Courage is an interesting description. I’ve never thought of it that way before. The best word I would’ve used is “anguish”. But I like “courage”. It does actually add a lot to what it’s supposed to mean. Very interesting
Especially when you think of the historical context of this piece. the composer wrote it in September 1831 when news of the crushing of the Polish uprising and the capture of Warsaw by the Russian army began to spread.

Agreed. Op. 10 No. 11 is definitely underrated.
It is also fiendishly difficult. I am getting closer to mastering Op 10 no 1 and i found Op 10 no 11 more difficult. Maybe there is a way to unlock it and make it easier that i haven't found yet.
My favorite is op 10 No 12. There is a lot of emotions, angry and this etiude has a really good story and reasons why Chopin wrote it. It’s so beautiful for me. I love it

Winter Wind and Revolutionary are my favorite! I played the Revolutionary first, now working on Winter Wind.
I had a profound story and appreciation for the etudes,, being blind I thought that for some silly reason I would never be able to play even one of them, but the music is so strong I just had to try and learn op. 25 no. 12. I stuck with it for a about the last two months and its close to sounding like music. It has helped me tremendously with some skills in other pieces too, the etudes certainly are like a medicine for technique.
Let me tell you something. This is one of the easiest etudes. The reason why you might have struggled with this one is how you are approaching it. Learning to play arpeggios in the easiest possible way isn’t easy.
Patience is the key to master this Etude. Think this is a chord Etude. If you learn how to make a chord sing and you learn how to play an arpeggio in an efficient and in the easiest possible way, you are done. Focus on that and search in TH-cam how to overcome those difficulties and you will notice the difference in no time. All the arpeggios in this Etude are comfortable
I can see how it is a great study for the blind. But even studies like Op 25 n 9 that sound full of jump are not much easier for non-blind people. The right hand of that study actually is played without looking at it (i train that study) and only the left hand has a few big jumps far apart that a glance can help to place but i am sure that it can be performed entirely without looking.
@@ericastier1646 Actually, I realized that looking at the hands only creates problems. If you learn the hands separately looking at them, when you try to play them together you won't be able to look at both. So when I learn the hands separately I try to not look at them.
I love every single one of Chopin's etudes, and have recently been studying op 25 no 1, I struggled for weeks trying to find a way to stop getting the tension in my forearms. Now being able to play this etude somewhat well, I have learned to see the true beauty of the sounds and feeling this etude can create, and is definitely my favourite etude
My favorite etude at this moment is op 25 no 7. I love to listen it again and again. Once in a while I listen to the cello and piano duet version of it, so beautiful! I'm also practicing it by myself.

It is the most depressing of all studies, gripping beautiful, yes but its depressing mood means that i practice it little and far between, as i am very sensitive.
For me, Etude Op.25 No.5 is the one did a never get bored of listening, no matter what, the colors of the different sections of the piece are so heavily emotional, but the one thing did I like is the way that the pianist make the piece get different color every time, so a beautiful piece I think
I love the hidden sounds you can hear after listening to winter wind a couple times. You’ll notice pitches you never heard before and it truly adds layers of depth to the already complex sound of the étude
My favourite is Etude Op. 25 No. 7. Out of all the Chopin etudes, this one particularly stands out for me.

You are fantastic! I love hearing you play. I have two Etudes learned but I have to constantly keep practicing them in order to be able to keep playing them well. Right now I am working on learning my favorite, the Winter Wind.
My favorite étude is the wrong note, and I think I will play the butterfly étude...
It's hard to pick a favorite, as they are all really good in their own ways. Although there are definitely some underrated ones like Op 10 No 7, Op 25 No 4, and Les Trois Nouvelles, the one Etude that always satisfies me when I hear it has to be Op 25 No 11, as it is one of the most intense and really shows how far ahead of his time Chopin really was. However, the one I find most fun to play is Op 25 No 1, since it flows the best and really encourages you to use your whole body when playing it.
I definitely don't have a favorite and the more I learn, the more I come to love and appreciate all of them.

Op 10 No 4 - what a rush, and that ending!
Op 10 No 5 - so fun, bright and happy (and it's the first etude i'm learning, i'll get there... eventually)
Op 25 No 12 - so deep, the build up of tension in the middle then the release toward the end... fantastic!
My favorite etude is no.25 op.11 extremely difficult with arpeggios and chromatic figuring for figures 3,4 ad 5. Keep up the hard work with your tetorials and I use some of your practice tips. Op 10 No 1 is an affirmation of life, and is probably my favorite piece of music. In some ways it energizes me like Rach’s Op 16 n 6 in C major
Even though i can't make out a favourite, i really love Op. 10 No.6 because of its deep and dark sound. It really is something else and very underrated in my opinion

My favourite etude is Op.10 No.4. It is so ibcredibly complex and ingeniously composed, that I get goosebumps every time I hear it. The etude I learned the first was the Revolutionary Op.10 No.12, and I'm currently studying the Op.10 No.1, which so far seems to be by far the hardest from the ones I've played.

I am working on etude 6 opus 10, this is the first Chopin etude I work on. I understand what you mean about the voices. It's really hard to separate the soprano voice to the Alto voice so you can hear a melody on the right hand. Your video was very enlightening. Thank you .
For me, I love them all so much. Im so grateful to have them by my side for the rest of my life and my spotlight moves all around them. Ive learned Op 10 no 12, although it needs a ton of work, and ive decided to start op 25 no 1 recently. My favorites currently are Op 10 no 3, so nostalgic and almost tormentingly beautiful, 10 no 6 its an awesome piece, and 10 no 9 always gives me goosebumps, i think that one is so deep.
But my all time favorites has to he op 25 no 5, I particularly love the way Valentina lisitsa's interpretation of it brings out all the complex voicings for harmony. Its truly one of the most marvelous creations ive ever encountered and i cant wait to get to a level where i can approach that one

Op10 no.9 is hauntingly beautiful but very underrated . Those repeat d flats and their echo an octave lower sound soooo good .
Having played several of these eteudes (Opus 10 No.5, 8, 12, and opus 25 #6) as warm ups for years, first moderately slow and theen in tempo. I whole heatedly endorse the point you make about learning to play these in a relaxed and flexible manner. Otherwise you may strain and actually sometimes hurt your hands
Op 25 no 1 is sublime. Full of melancholy. Schumann nailed it
My favourite etude is op.10 no.3, even as a young child, hearing this song gave me nostalgia as if I'd already lived a whole life, and it was probably one of the pieces that got me into classical music. I think it's a perfect balance of emotion and I love the way Chopin uses three voices. The fact that it's called tristesse tries to narrow the song towards sadness when in reality it expresses almost every emotion at the same time. Very fun to play as well. Even Chopin said himself that he thought he would never write a more beautiful melody in his lifetime.
My favorite etude and most beautiful in my opinion has to be Op.10 No.1. The first time I heard it, it blew my mind, and I knew I had to play it. I tried for three months to learn it, but I couldn't, being 13 years old with little piano experience. But after 5 years of waiting, I spent the last two months relentlessly learning and practicing it, and I am so close to having it down I can taste it.
My favorite piece of all time is Op 10 No 12 “Revolutionary” and it’s also my favorite etude

I vaguely remember hearing étude op. 25 no. 5 on a radio when I was 3 or 4. I’ve recently heard it for the first time in years and memories of my childhood came back to me. Even the middle part that I hated as a kid grew on me and has become my favourite part in all the études. I am working hard practicing it right now. Oui j'aimerais faire des concerts afin de devenir pianiste, c'est ça qui me rend heureux je le sens. Le problème est que je ne sais pas comment faire pour tout ça... Y'a t-il des écoles à suivre durant le lycée et après le lycée ? Comment et où faire des concerts ? Etc
My favorite etude is op 25 no 5. I believe Chopin's Tristesse etude has the most beautiful melody, and technique wise i'd probably have to go with op 10 no 4. Thanks for being amazing Annique, keep up the great work

As the majority here, I love them all, but I think my favorite is op. 25, n° 5. It's very special to me.

My favorite is Op. 25 No. 7. The melody and harmony are simply beautiful, to me maybe the best Chopin ever wrote. I also highly recommend the arrangement made by someone of this piece for Cello.

Most beautiful section: the arpeggio passage from 25,5 is definitely up there
I love them all. As you addressed yourself they are quite “holly” in the Piano literature alongside Bach’s Preludes and Fugues, and Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas! As difficult and variable as it may be, my current favorite is Op. 25 No. 12. :))))
I like the op 10 nr 1 the most because it’s the one I started with actually and I played it one 2 competitions when I was 12 and won 1rst price both times so the etude always reminds me to good memories and I just love the melody
Op. 10 no.1 is my favourite Etude! I love this dizzy water sounds! Op. 25 no.1 is the most beautiful for me. It is realy touching my soul! I like the melodie of Op. 10 no. 10 and 25 no 5 & no. 10 middle sections too! Chopin is so uniqe person for me! Especially the etudes! These are artpoems with benefits! ;)

My favorite is 25-12. Next, 25-7. Those etudes just got my full attention first time I heard them.
My favourite is op.25 no.6. Such a beautifull piece. It feels so alive and so colorful. It's beauty decieves you with it's contrasting difficulty, kinda like the litterary metaphorical use of Will-o'the-wisp (Irrlicht) when I come to think about it. Ironic considering how it is technically related to Liszt Feux Follets.
Question 7: op.25 no.6 bar 43-46 gets me right in the feels.
Favorite Etude for me is Op. 10 no. 12 "Revolutionary" because of how much it sounds like my favorite composer of all time, Beethoven. That said, I love all of them for one reason or another.
The hardest for me is a tie between Op. 25 no 11 Winter Wind and the Op. 25 no. 10 Octave Etude, Winter Wind because of the sudden jump in tempo and Octave Etude because my hands are so small that I literally have to slide one of my fingers to play them legato.
I'm playing Op10 no.9&12 and Op25 no.10,11&12. If I had to pick a favourite one I would go with 25.12 in terms of beauty and 25.11 for being so much fun to perform. But all of them are amazing. I would say 10.9 is underrated in terms of difficulty unless you have a large left hand: it creates a lot of tension and it's not easy to play accurately. I think next one I'll be working on is 10.4: love how it sounds and it looks pretty entertaining to learn!
my favorite etudes are:
1. op 10 n 4(because of the nervous sound and beautiful melodies in this etude and also techinque)
2. op 25 n 11(it is like a piece when you can say yeah I did come to the place in my piano playing where I understand music and technique)
3. op 10 n 1( I love this etude because of the sunny melodie and that measures in the middle and it is in general an awesome piece to play)

all of the etudes are great, and they are of course not just boring etudes but beautiful pieces as we all know. but my favourite one will always be op. 25 no. 1. it is the first one i got to know, my grandma used to play it when we stayed at hers in france during summer holidays when i was a kid. she was a former student of alfred cortot and had a beautiful small pleyel grand piano in her living room. what a unique and wonderful sound!

I'm happy you mentioned 10/9 as a very difficult Etude. On paper it looks straightforward but damn...you can actually injure your left hand with this one!
My favorite Etude is op 25 no 7. The Etude is Chopin. One of the aspects Chopin pursued with the piano is singing. This is a very difficult task in the piano since it’s a percussion instrument and doing it with the left hand is even more difficult. This piece is intimate. Has a lot of improvisation which is very difficult to deal with it. It’s simple and organic. It is easy to identify. Probably not the most difficult Etude to play but definitely the most difficult one to master because it has all the most difficult things you will encounter in music to master. Technique is the means for expression and not the other way around
i think that my favourite etude is op. 10 no.5 because its unusual with the only black keys and sounds really happy and for me it makes people feels good and nice. but of course i love all etudes❤❤

The first Etude that I studied is the Revolutionary op10 no.12, my favorite to play is Etude op.25 no.5 the wrong notes love the middle part very romantic.
It’s interesting, I think there is lots of variation in which is considered “hardest” - as you said, just depends on the individual. Op 25 no 12 is easy for some but a harder one for me. And I definitely don’t consider double thirds the hardest one. My favourite changes regularly, could be op. 25 n. 1,3,5,12… I don’t mention op 10 as I’m learning op 25 currently so it’s all I think of haha
What about Godowsky?
My most favorite Chopin etude would be either op 25 no 6 or op 10 no 5. 25#6 sounds very much like a nocturne to me, the sotto voce thirds in the right hand contribute to its effect. 10#5 sounds sooo playful and i think you need to play it super clean with excellent dynamics and suitable rubato in some measures to achieve the desired satisfaction😄
Op.10 No. 2 is the most difficult on so many levels. There isn’t any doubt about it…
Haven't listened to the Etudes in a while but if I had to pick one I would go with the Op 10 no 3 one

I know this video is a year old, but I hope while you were studying in Warszawa you got a chance to visit Chopin’s Birthplace in Żelazowa Wola. It’s very beautiful there. (I also liked seeing the Pałac Kultury at the beginning of the video. When I lived in Warszawa the joke was “Where can you get the best view of the city? From the top of the Pałac Kultury because you can’t see the Pałac Kultury!”)

I find this very interesting as you mentioned op10 no9 being one of the most difficult which I completely understand but I guess it’s all about personal strengths because I did this etude first and found it pretty easy. Could be because of my massive hands (can stretch a 12th :)

So, would you say that starting to learn the chopin's etudes is a good way to brush up my piano skill in general? Or I should consider my skill level and try something easier first?
Here’s some encouragement from my experience, though I haven’t played too many of them:
You’re never ready to start the Chopin etudes. No one is. That’s the point. Eventually, you just have to start, and by introducing yourself to them, you start to finally become capable of playing them well. But it’s not gonna be easy at all. It takes a lot of patience. Unlike most repertoire, when you’re “finished” learning one of the etudes, it’s still not gonna go very well. I’m order to master one of these pieces, you need to keep coming back to it over long periods of time, and eventually you’ll get it.
My first Etude was Op. 10 No. 1. (Not too long ago) It was tough. The best I could do after finishing it was play it sloppily at 130 bpm (a lot of wrong notes and a poor sound). After a year of playing through it once or twice a day I was able to play it through at full tempo (or even faster if I break it into parts), with a clear and profound sound, with minimal missed notes. It’s just a thing you learn over time. I have had similar experiences with other pieces doing this same thing - devoting 5 minutes a day solely to that piece and it just strengthens itself.
If you think you wanna start learning an Etude, go for it. It’ll take time and patience, but you can do it

The most interesting thing about etudes for me is you have to unlearn what you have learned in order to overcome difficulties. Nothing is written in stone when you play the piano. It’s actually true that sometimes you have to do things in the opposite way you have been taught in order to overcome a very difficult passage
