  • If you are new to the Leica M mount system and are a tighter budget then the Voigtlander Nokton Classic 35mm 1.4. is probably the best overall lens I have found that is versatile and cost effective. In this video I want to talk about the benefits of 35mm as a focal length in general and specifically with this lens as well as some of the obvious limitations with the Leica M cameras. I hope this video helps you in your search of finding a great lens for you Leica camera. Cheers friends!

    Great video! I've mainly been a 50mm shooter but this particular lens has really grown on me. As you mentioned, it is a very versatile lens and such a great everyday lens to have on an M- body. I enjoy the character of it wide open and its performance when stopped down. Thanks for sharing the video 🙂

      Really debated that brass version. Starting to like the look of it more. Perhaps in the future with a different focal length. Thanks for watching!

    I found your review spot on. I have had mine for about 2 years. I use it on my CL and on my M10-R. The lens performs well on both cameras. I have noticed that wide open the DOF is extremely shallow. So mailing the focus can be tricky and requires some practice. All the same, it is a very good lens.

    If you’re thinking about a 28, hie about a 21? They’re great in tight spaces. I use the VOIGTLÄNDER COLOR-SKOPAR 21mm F3.5 Aspherical. It’s very small and doesn’t get too distorted. Shoot wide and crop in post to get options. That’s why I don’t worry about corner to corner sharpness - you don’t use the corners!

    Very good video... thank you! I notice you have glasses... Can you see the frame lines and patch clearly with the M6, or do you need any diopter or magnifier to focus critically wide open?

      I can actually see everything in the viewfinder pretty well. Have not said I have missed critical focus very often as well

    I switched from the 1.4 to the color skopar 2.5, I love that it's even smaller and has less distortion, also I didn't love the bokeh on the 1.4... still a superb lens for the price
    I use that lens only on the leica but on my slr I have the 28mm/58mm combo that's generally more useful, I use the 35 as a one for all option as a capture memories only thing

    • @ThomasBocage
      @ThomasBocage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely for the price it’s hard to beat!
      And I definitely agree in having the 28 and 50. Honestly perfect focal lengths for their use cases

    If you want a budget 28mm the ttartisans 28mm 5.6 is pretty sweet, I just picked it up but have been enjoying it a ton already. Since you’re shooting flash the fast aperture won’t be missed in that instance either.

    Great video. Surprised you didn't mention Zeiss as far as an alternative to Leica lenses. Zeiss lenses out preform Voigtlander and many of them you can grab for under $800. I personally own their 21mm 2.8, 28mm 2.8, and 50mm 1.5. All fantastic lenses and all purchased for under $700.

    I had it, too much barrel distortion for my taste, and needed one that would work on film and digital, so Voigtlander Ultron for me. For film, a no brainer lens.

    You shoot weddings on an M6? How do you get everything in focus?
    I shoot with a 35mm mainly but understand why people like 50mm. 35mm is just handy when you want to see a little bit more than the subject.

    • @ThomasBocage
      @ThomasBocage  ปีที่แล้ว

      I do! I use it mainly when things aren't moving too fast. The more practice you get with manual focusing the easier it becomes.
      And 35mm is def very handy. It has it's place in a lot of situations

    I bet a nikon FM2 and all 4 voigtlander f-mount lenses would cost less than the m6 body alone. The FM2 also has way more features than the m6 and can do a lot more

    • @ThomasBocage
      @ThomasBocage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting ideas you bring up

    • @bhop.builds
      @bhop.builds ปีที่แล้ว

      You're probably right about the cost, but the only feature an fm2 has that an m6 doesn't is a higher max shutter speed. Not to mention you'd be shooting with all SLR instead of a rangefinder which would defeat the purpose of shooting a Leica anyway. Many people mistakenly think it's about the images, (I can't tell a difference in quality between photos made with my Leica and Nikons) but shooting with a rangefinder camera is actually about the rangefinder experience. Something that's completely different from the SLR experience.

    • @garvinkelly
      @garvinkelly ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bhop.builds you are incorrect about the 1/4000 max shutter speed being the only feature that the m6 doesn't have. The fm2 also has a higher flash synch speed, double exposure, self timer, depth of field preview and the shutter speed and aperture settings are visible in the viewfinder. The fm2 is also designed to work in extreme conditions so it has no grease and is more reliable than the m6. It also has the ability to shoot and focus a huge range of focal lengths without buying extra viewfinders. The fm2 also focuses closer with all lenses. The Leica "experience" is nice and all but the lenses and the quiet shutter are the real reasons to shoot a Leica ( or if you like attention and status symbols)

      @@garvinkelly who cares about the tech specs? I own a FM2 and a M6 and some other cameras. I love the Nikon, but I like the Leica more, most of the time. I don't think this will change your mind. And it is not important for you neither me. Enjoy what you have and like, it's so simple! 😃

    Leica camera and Voigtländer lenses. Really?
    How should Leica survive, when many people purchase Voigtländer lenses?
    Leica M6 with a Voigtländer lens is a joke.
    Better save money a little bit longer and earn Leica glass, than that kind of culture shock.
