Thanks for the kind words of AEOD! It was such a project fueled by blood, sweat and tears, but mostly sweat. It was such a treat to make, Ryan and Mike collaborating created one of my favorites stories we’ve ever done. They are such a powerhouse.
I'm really curious how the idea of that depiction of Marklin came to be. Did somebody just slapped an eyeball on him and they or someone else was like "That's it!" and so the story eventually came to be?
@@SegaMario literally, yes haha! we also wanted to make the ghost not really a villain, but more of like a mentor to dennis, hence why it throws the truck at him and rosie which causes dennis to shape up!
@@carson08022000 I...must admit I didn't watch the video as I hate jumpscares and I'm pretty sure they're in that one. It's proof that quality horror can still exist without that done-to-death trope. Sorry for that rant, but I just wanted to get that out of my system.

fun fact: The Shunter Henry mentioned in AEOD WAS an actual character. It’s called the Marklin Engine, and was used to push freight in the backgrounds of a few scenes in Season 1 (though it was never on screen). It was turned into a scrap model by Season 3.
Fun fact about Ghosts - the face of Neptune was deliberately left as an open plot thread, it was confirmed long ago to've been planned to return in a future episode had the series been continued. The original outline for that scene was also wayyyy more intense, and likely would've been completely impossible to film with what they had lol. An except from the first draft: "In the distance heading out to sea are the Ghost Tugs. Without thinking the small Switchers head after them. Even with their engines running at full speed they cannot make fast enough headway in the rising sea to catch them. Suddenly a thick seafog enshroudes them and the waves rise menacingly. If they try to turn back they would be side on ot the waves and would roll over. Rising out of the sea comes a huge Trident trapping the Switchers between its forks. Lifting them clear of the water it turns them around then lowers them back into the sea. Confused and scared, Ten Cents and Sunshine battle the waves back towards the bars. But the fog is very thick and obscures the shore lights. Even Lillie Lightship cannot be seen, and her fog horn is drowned out by the sea rushing over the bars. Suddenly through the fog two bright lights may be seen. Assuming them to be the shore lights they head between them. As they come off the bars into the quiet waters of the Bay, the fog swirls and clears for a second. To their horror just ahead of them is the giant face of Neptune, his eyes glowing brightly. Before they can react the fog obliterates the scene."
Wow I never heard that before. While I'm glad the scene didn't go that far (as it does sound a tad silly), that still is so interesting that Neptune was meant to be more than a one-off.
"Duncan gets spooked" is definitely a favorite of mine when it comes to scary Thomas episodes. Actually seeing a flashback about the origins of the ghost story and seeing an actual engine fall to his death is certainly something that stuck in my mind when I watched it as a kid. And after seeing the deleted scenes of the ghost engine in that episode being released and other content creators editing them into the episode, it definitely adds to the spooky atmosphere of the story.
Edward is the kind of grandpa who tries to help the young the most. Toby is the kind of grandpa who tells the young if they kick the candy machine in a certrain way the will get candy for free.
One thing I love about All Eyes on Dennis is that is it's goal as a story works very well similar to Scaredy Engines, it's a Halloween story that is both a Spooky Story in the CVW lineup, and also serves as a redemption story for Dennis. Much like how Scaredy Engines is both a Duck & Percy story, as well as a Thomas and Percy Rivalry story. Also, about 6 months ago or so, I showed AEOD to one of my classmates who was a bit familiar with Thomas. And they knew of the Hit Era newbies but not much else after that era. So I showed them this and they really enjoyed it.

As a kid, the visual of Emily under the tarp always gave me chills. Halloween is one of the best episodes to come out of the Hit Era. The music, the setting, the storytelling, and of course, the chase are what make it so good. The ghost engine who appears at the beginning used to send shivers down my spine as a kid. But the ending always made me smile. And, believe me when I say that I hated ghosts as a kid. I will admit that the resolve happened too soon, but I liked the choice of Arry and Bert as antagonists. Even if their characterisation in later seasons after Stepney Gets Lost was... weird, to say the least.
Although I don’t mind, the fat controller appearing out of nowhere to save Stepney (since it continues, the theme that the fat controller will go out of his way to save engines, and as a controller, it makes sense that he would be inspecting yards every now and again) I think it would’ve been better if it was his driver and fireman who saved Stepney. After all, it would make sense that they would return to find their engine gone and quickly try to save him. They could’ve rushed to the workmen and explain that Stepney is privately owned an unless they want the Northwestern/Bluebell Railway (whoever owns him) to try them with destruction of property they better not scrap him.

Everybody gangster until the smokebox door opens lol. Also, yeah. I like that the ghost isn't evil, just...big angry and trying to teach a lesson. It's a very easy trap to fall into with ghost characters where they become too powerful for the engines to 'fight' them, so there's no real reason for them to stop doing spooky things.
I assume Ghosts' ending was played the way it was mainly for ambiguity. That way the viewer could decide themselves how much, if anything the tugs saw was real. Especially with how Hercules gives reasonable explanations for everything except the clearly strange things. They *could* have been hallucinating and we just saw what they did, but at the same time, can we be sure? Hercules can't know everything, after all.
This was such a fun video to watch. I started getting into scary Thomas stories last year, and it’s definitely been a wild ride. So many fantastic creations and good cinematography. It’s become my new favorite genre of Thomas videos. This was a great selection to choose from, and your commentary was very funny to listen to.
Would love to see you cover the Dudley stories one day. Given what the stories do with their characters and how people have adapted them. Maybe that can be a chance to bring back your “Who did it better” series
The fan stories reviewed are definitely some of the best Thomas horror stories I've seen on here. I hadn't seen All Eyes on Dennis before, went and had a look, definitely deserves its spot on the list. I'm surprised you didn't include The Horrors at Hawin Lake Saga, The Wandering Coach, or The 13th Van on the roster. Daylight 3's The Missing 411 and related videos are another fan horror series that are proving to be very good. It's very effective at building up the suspense and dread and I can't wait to see how it plays out.
I totally recommend watching/ reviewing the Horrors of Hawin Lake, it takes place at the same time as season 5 (best classic season imo) and goes even harder into the supernatural and horror side the season gave us along side amazing editing and soundtrack, along side the quality improvement as the story progresses
It's kind of a shame you didn't feature MasterOfTheLemon's 'Token' audio story. I get it'd have been impractical for you to discuss an audio play for the reasons you went over. And that whole story is an hour and a half long - enough content for you to need to make a seperate video on without it being jarring. But I'd really hope you could get around to covering that story on your channel sometime. I'm not sure if you've given it a listen yet; but I'd really, really recommend it. It was a story so immersing for me, and with such gravitas it honestly felt like it didn't belong in something like Thomas. Definitely deserves to get a shout-out whenever possible.
I'm surprised you didn't cover Photographic premonition by dcg12b (and shunterproductions). Brilliant video nonetheless, Silent as the Grave and All Eyes on Dennis are my favourites out of your picks.
I always liked the 'scary' episodes of Thomas, esp season 5. My favorite fan ones on here are Revenge of the Ghost Train and Half Engine. Other ones that are my favorite are 'The Eyes', 'Phantom of the Arlesdale', '10 O'Claw', and the 5 part Hawin Lake miniseries about the Ghost of Dane/1020.
If you do this again, I think you should cover rheneas productions, shunter productions, or daylight 3. His woods series is pretty spooky and makes tension on broad daylight. The jumpscare is the only one i like of these stories. I usually dont like jump scares, but this one felt properly built up. I liek stories with just a creepy atmosphere and other creeping horror. Another good recommendation is the spooky episodes of the stories of sodor by victor tanzig, ghost, spector and fog come to mind. The smash bros logo for rogman was very funny, i wasnt expexting the little blurb there. It is just chefs kiss.
I might actually do an adaptation of The Half Engine next year, as part of my own Thomas series. But with some majour changes, so it can fit in my world. Also, I’m gonna give the half engine a name
I have to say, I'm surprised to not see the Horrors of Harwin Lake on this list. Still loved this content. Also very addicted to spooky Thomas content.
i've seen memes and stuff featuring the engines face being able to 'look back' by opening the smokebox door. but... good god 1:05:44 takes that idea and plays it for all the horror it's worth im all for taking the 'nature' of characters that arent human like this and turning them into a nightmare. for example a sapient mantis character cannibalizing their also sapient mate (better examples are probably about but eh). and this is a perfect example of that in a non-biological format. a living steam engine exploiting it's design to open its 'face' and look towards something behind it to give a cold glare.
There's an adaptation of The Half Engine, I believe by Bradley Thomas, that changes the Half Engine's targets a wee bit, making it people who are bullies to disabled people.
Another great one is the horror of Hawin Lake. IT's a 5 part series that ties all of the disasters of season 5 together, and has absolute insane lore, storytelling, effects, and above all tone.
Oh, that one. That one is GOOOOD. (Spoilers btw) The plot of that is stellar, minus the whole "and he will come to take you to your death". Like, why? When did he sign a deal with the god of Death to ferry his targets to... wherever it is he takes them? It's not clear. But the beginning story, oh *MAN* . I could listen to that until my death. And the "dialogue" between the ghost and (I think his name was) Steven was just right. I was half sure the ghost was actually going to drag him away, but was convinced not to by the choice of words Steven used. All in all, a really good tale. Shame the series ended the episode right after that one.
So the reason Crovan happened upon the scene with Alfred in Revenge of the Ghost Train is because he's the Governor's Private Engine, and the administrative capital of Sodor is Suddery, relatively near where the 'fight' scene happened. He honestly probably woke up, realised what was happening, and then went to the scene. I believe it is relatively established in T1E2H3's series is that engines can drive themselves as long as they have the coal and water in order to run.
If I'm being honest, that shocked Thomas model in the thumbnail scared me more than any of these stories. Those eyes man. I just can't with those eyes, ever since I was a kid.
I still find it absolutely hilarious that Thomas and Toby are basically the same age, but Toby is always portrayed as old, while Thomas keeps being shown as younger and younger with each era. They were built within about one year of each other. And, if I remember correctly, Thomas is actually the older of the two! Also, depending on you do the math on it, Percy might actually be the oldest of the three. We don't have a solid build date for him, but if we assume that he was repaired with mixed parts and not Frankensteined together, and assume the oldest reasonable build date for his frames, he'd actually be older than Edward! His closest IRL basis is a locomotive named Trojan, who was built in 1897, only 1 year after Edward, and Avonside started building a lot of small saddle tanks in the 1880s, though they built them up until the 1930s. Avonside made a heck of a lot of 0-4-0s, over a very long period of time, and it'd take a long time for Percy to get rebuilt enough times to become as much of a hodge podge as he is, so all we really know for sure is that he has to be fairly old, so he can't be that much younger than the other two. At the latest, he could have been built in the 1930s, making him 15-20 years younger than Thomas and Toby. Looking it up, Thomas's build date isn't given, but would have to be no earlier than 1913, when the first of his class were built, and no later than 1915, the year he arrived on Sodor. Toby has a canonical build year of 1914. So, when he arrived in 1949, Percy could have been anywhere from half their canonical ages to twice their canonical ages. Personally, my headcanon is that Percy is super old, and is an 1880s build, but just cheekily responds to any questions about his age with something like "older than my pistons, but a few weeks younger than my frames" instead of actually giving anyone a straight answer. I'd love to see a fan story where Trojan visits Sodor, and Percy introduces him as his younger brother. And then they read 1897 on trojan's builder's plate on the back of his cab when he leaves, and they start doing the math...
Exactly. He's wise enough to know that being the wise old authority figure is boring. Everyone expects Toby and Edward to take things seriously and be in charge, but nobody's gonna dump extra responsibilities on silly little Percy, and that's exactly the way he likes it. Growing up is a scam.@@PlayDontPause

For series 8 Halloween, I think it would’ve been better for us to not see the tarp fall on Emily. Therefore just leaving the audience with Thomas until we all sees the “ghost” and then runs away, that way it comes to the shock that the ghost is Emily when they reach the sheds.

The original outline for that scene was also wayyyy more intense, and likely would've been completely impossible to film with what they had lol. An except from the first draft:

It was a story so immersing for me, and with such gravitas it honestly felt like it didn't belong in something like Thomas. Definitely deserves to get a shout-out whenever possible.
I'm surprised you didn't cover Photographic premonition by dcg12b (and shunterproductions). Brilliant video nonetheless, Silent as the Grave and All Eyes on Dennis are my favourites out of your picks.
The sparks is likely an attempt to represent St. Nemo's fire, which is an actual phenomenon that has been known to happen to ships
About 4:22, yes, while it is the 1st _spooky_ episode, the nighttime breakdown train scene is unusually haunting.
32:30 POV: when you see diesel lunge(kinda) at the screen in pop goes the diesel
Your editing never fails to amaze me
i've seen memes and stuff featuring the engines face being able to 'look back' by opening the smokebox door. but... good god 1:05:44 takes that idea and plays it for all the horror it's worth
im all for taking the 'nature' of characters that arent human like this and turning them into a nightmare. for example a sapient mantis character cannibalizing their also sapient mate (better examples are probably about but eh). and this is a perfect example of that in a non-biological format. a living steam engine exploiting it's design to open its 'face' and look towards something behind it to give a cold glare.
Your not the only person who is obsessed with Halloween/Ghost stories that are from the franchise and the fandom.
There's an adaptation of The Half Engine, I believe by Bradley Thomas, that changes the Half Engine's targets a wee bit, making it people who are bullies to disabled people.
Wow, it's like Batman, but a train...and it kills people...okay, maybe nothing like Batman-
IMO one of the best is the fan adaption of Duncan gets spooked 2010, an audio story. The way the ghost story is told is…haunting.
Honestly Victor Tanzigs Ghost Stories are pretty damn good, surpised none were mentioned here.
Yeah, I was surprised too. Victor's ghosr stories are spine chilling!
I think they deserve their own video
Another great one is the horror of Hawin Lake. IT's a 5 part series that ties all of the disasters of season 5 together, and has absolute insane lore, storytelling, effects, and above all tone.
In the case of half-engine, the image of half of a locomotive/cart somehow still standing upright is VERY nerve-wrecking.
As a Ghost Adventures enjoyer, I haven’t actually thought about the show in a long while. I gotta get back into watching it!
I think Fowler's Ghost from the British Railway Series would have been good for at least an honorable mention
Oh, that one. That one is GOOOOD. (Spoilers btw)
The plot of that is stellar, minus the whole "and he will come to take you to your death".
Stepney Gets Lost legit scared the hell out of me the first time I watched it, and I was way older than I should have been.
0:26 Seriously! How could watching a scary Thomas & Friends make you cr*p yourself?
32:29 that how
For carson`s video, Its pretty hard that the Märklin engine to talk , beeing faceless and all
I, too, am clinically addicted. I cannot get enough of them. I always enjoy a good dose of sp00py
Duncan gets spooked scared the HELL out of me when I was a kid.
If I'm being honest, that shocked Thomas model in the thumbnail scared me more than any of these stories. Those eyes man. I just can't with those eyes, ever since I was a kid.
Those were originally swirly eyes, like he was dizzy. I changed them to be more similar to 'Get Out,' and I think it works a lot better.
It’s ok man your not the only one that loves fan made Thomas horror episodes also I love that you used trampy as an example for tugs
im suprised the wandering coach is not on here. Its by far my favorite story.
Plot twist: Percy's actually older than Thomas and the others, but pretends to not know what he's doing because it's more interesting that way.
As a kid I was terrified of Thomas, Percy, and the Dragon.
I love these stories, especially old fan ones made in like trainz2010
11:40 I may have grown up with the American Dub, and I may think that Baldwin was good in Season 5… I agree with Luke. There is no way in HELL that Baldwin is better than Angelis (Except in Scaredy Engines, here 16:55 )
I only have the vaguest memories of an engine being walled into a hole, but your humor and editing is keeping me very entertained
that angelis jumpscare during the scaredy engines review hurt me so bad
i respect you.
No Untold Story of Timothy? That is like, THE quintessential Thomas horror fanfic.
You aren’t the only one who is addicted.
41:37 Gosh darn this scared the SH#T Out of me that music was so freaking loud
Damn… guess I need help too!
Your style of writing and editing is reeeealy good, and it's generally engaging! Awesome work!!!
Bruh I have seen trip to vicarstown before and when Alfred jumped out I think my heart stopped
Legit, I knew that jumpscare was coming, it got me during the research/watching phase, and then IT GOT ME AGAIN during the editing.
thanks for replying but yeah i kid you not every time i watch it i get scared yet i play horror games 24/7 it makes 0 sense also have you ever thought of doing the steamie awards ever year i would love that@@PlayDontPause
Great job! But you could’ve putten more stories like Shed 17, The Stories of Sodor: Spectre/Ghost, The Untold story of Timothy, etc. But it’s not a problem! I still think this video is great!
Shed 17 is shit
that jump scare gets me any single time
This was a great video. I love how you reviewed my video and I am more than willing to allow you to review more of my videos in the future. Keep up the good work lad.
Fun Fact, the Ghost Engine in "all eyes on Dennis" is a german tank engine
I’m surprised you didn’t talk about the Untold Story Of Timothy, Horror On Kirk Ronan Branch or 311.
To me the episode with fireworks and included Thomas and James that episode îs a gem to me that got me in the fandom
Goated video as always man and so glad to see you back ❤
44:30 That’s called foreshadowing
ngl even i got hooked back into this, I AM GOING BACK INTO THE MY PAST YIPPEEE
EditOk, so i watched the half engine story before and needless to say, her ghost model and everything about it is scary. Even the ending itself is amazing.
I disagree with your opinion of Tugs and think Ghosts is a really strong episode, but God your videos are great. Thoroughly enjoy watching them from beginning to end. Happy Halloween, Play!
Friendly disagreements!
You’re not the only one, I wished the show did more scary stories and dove even more deeper into the darker stuff.
The Thomas Ghost Episodes are BY FAR ALL the best, and the most watched and re-watched for me, original and fan made, most of them are all made so well. Shunterproductions is prob the GOAT of Thomas Spooky Trainz episodes.
49:20 every time when I do something it feels like nothing passed this is how it kinda looks like for me
Will you ever fully review "The Horrors of Hawin Lake by TheBlueSnowplow?
It would interesting to see his perspective on the very dark side of the Thomas fandom (stories like Shed17 and Sodor dark times)
Shed 17 is just garbage, Dark Times is legitimately great though.
@@AmirPrinceling Its certainly polarizing. Lots of people say its very well made, lots believe it was made simply for scares and some believe its just plain bad.
70 likes since i started. 505 to 575. Loved this and so does everyone else. Fantastic work by all the creators as well
17:06 Actually scared the piss out of me, thanks. 😂
For series 8 Halloween, I think it would’ve been better for us to not see the tarp fall on Emily. Therefore just leaving the audience with Thomas until we all sees the “ghost” and then runs away, that way it comes to the shock that the ghost is Emily when they reach the sheds.
Great video about Ghost Stories. Also, thank you for the shout out, and you said my name right (unlike last time lol).
I remembered mispronouncing it last time, but I didn't remember HOW I mispronounced it, so I was like 'welp, I hope this is right!' lol
Good to know I’m not the only one that watches these
Rosie resembles her basis in “All Eyes On Dennis” and I don’t know why
Halloween is probably my favourite episode of season 8. And as for Scaredy Engines, I’m thinking of talking about it in my upcoming season 6 video.
Also I think Demons would be a great honourable mention.
To me, the Model Series (S2-9) and the fandom has the best spooky stories!
The CGI Series tries it's best, but they're not as good as the Model Series.
Plus, the TUGS episode is fantastic!
The strange engine at in the last story looking back at Dennis is absolutely horrifying!
Amazing video, love the comedy bits! I've been meaning to ask this, but since you dipped into it, I would love if you did Who Did It Better? on original audio stories like The Wandering Coach, Caledonian Twins, A Streak of Blue, and many others.
Thanks for the suggestion! I would LOVE to cover a bunch of original stories, though they caaaaan be a little tricky to actually review, since...audio stories are just that. Audio.
Though, never say never. I'm sure I could work SOMETHING out.
Don’t forget MickeyFan’s adaptation of The Killdane Experiment, a story where James goes to the scrapyard to deliver some trucks, meets a kid with a camera and later sees the ghost of a Frankenstein looking engine.
One of the best vids yet. Awesome!
