I am Charles Treger’s oldest daughter. It is with heavy hearts that my sister Lisa and I must say that our beloved Dad, this world renowned violinist passed away last week Thursday January 12, 2023. We are forever grateful for the Wieniawski Competition and the beautiful people of Poland for all the love you’ve shown us over the decades! His music will live on in all of us!
It is with deepest regret and sorrow that we receive information about the death of Charles Treger, a great violinist, the winner of the 4th International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition. Peace to his soul!
Hi Robin I am sorry to hear of your dad’s passing My grandfather, Ed Louton, now 89, was with your father in middle school in Detroit and was on second violin under William Engel (one of your dad’s first teachers) He often spoke of what an excellent violinist your dad was, and was a guest of his at a concert in 1956 I believe Your dad left a good impact and is fondly remembered.
When I was a teenager, my violin teacher, William Engel, rang up Charles Treger, who happened to be in town, and asked if he could drop by and demonstrate his interpretation of how to play Bach’s Arioso. Mr. Treger drove right over, leaving me with an incredible memory-especially after my hearing many stories of his early years. He told me that this piece, though technically very simple, is actually “most difficult”, consistent with everything Mr. Engel had taught me.
Wow. Younger winners then was 16. Now we have 8-10 year old winners. It is terrible the way that it is changing violin playing perspective. It is wonderful indeed have those little players, but, what is that leading us to?
