This is a more detailed video about JD Hobbies in San Pedro CA. To see the cellphone video I took watch the other shorter video I did: • JD Hobbies visit
Now we know what Modeller's Heaven looks like. Mrs. Max's comment is correct. What a place. A hobby shop, diecast store, collectors store and a museum all under one roof. Thanks for sharing the tour Max.
Wow! If it wasn't in California this place would be worth building a vacation around it. Oh well, I'd spend a fortune on all the goodies I'd find. Thanks for this video. It's sooooo good to know this place exists and doesn't try to gouge on every purchase.
The store reminds me of the stores in the old days, a mish mash of everything everywhere and you went looking everywhere, great to see you and Mike enjoying yourselves, model on
I'd love to see a close-up of that mighty B-36 hanging from the ceiling! Absolutely incredible hobby shop. Just miss seeing that plastic model kit of the Army's atomic cannon that sat in the store window of the Atwater, CA hobby shop of my youth (1958) complete with cover art showing a mushroom cloud in the distance!. JJS
Excellent experience for sure. The little shop in Norton MA is a lot smaller but very cool, Harrys Hobbies. There is another store connected to it chuck full of collectibles. I hope you get to check it out someday. Cheers Commander.
I was there last weekend and it is a great store. However, if you buy any model kits, open them up at the check out counter before you leave the store to make certain that they are new and contain all the parts. I bought a Burago brand VW Bug kit that was shrink-wrapped and looked brand new. When I got home and took the shrink wrap off the box and opened it up, it turned out to be a used kit, with the body poorly painted in a two tone color scheme by someone using a brush, and there were small pieces of sandpaper in the box, along with extraneous pieces of used plastic wrap. Ugh! That was an unpleasant surprise, but seeing as I was now at home which is in the Sacramento area many hundreds of miles from the store, I could not take it back.
Wow, I lost track of Airfix new tool kits over the last couple years. I was hoping that Hobby Lobby would stock them but instead they stopped selling Airfix. Your comment sent me to the Airfix site. I have the Academy B-24 series but Airfix have apparently eclipsed those kits. Over the years I've had several friends who were children of Liberator crewmen
And a year later Adm Yamamoto was killed on April 18, 1943. I had a Filipino coworker who admired both Gen MacArthur and Adm Yamamoto. i can't remember his exact words but this young Filipino man felt that the killing of Yamamoto was a terrible thing.
You should have ghosted the Blue Angles A-4 video from the ‘80’s with the end music since the two are essentially synonymous with each other for people of ‘our time’. We all wanted to be one of them. I know I did! Most excellent.
OK. It’s 1236 hours OHIO TIME I SEE NO OTHER COMMENTS…. Am I first ???? 😳 Not even finished watching this, and I know I’m going to watch this again !!!!!!! That would be a great SKYRAIDER to build and use those Markings…. All Hobby Shops are great… BUT, this is my kind of place HOLE in the WALL !!!!! Some real Treasures there….. Usually these kind of places are out of the way…. In my travels I’ve found places like this… CHICAGO, ATLANTA SAN ANTÓNIO TX. even had One in MONROE MICHIGAN old shop with Wood Floors creaked when you walked across them…… I wouldn’t know where to start looking at all the stuff that is in there…. THERE’S THAT SCARY GODZILLA MUSIC !!!!!!! Hobby Shop On ………. CHRIS 🇺🇸
Max, how did you find this place? I’ve lived in SoCal since the ‘80’s and have never heard of it, even from my more knowledgeable modeling buddies. I feel like I woke up from a dream, only to say, “heck, that wasn’t real”.
We lost the best hobby shop in northwest Indiana when the owner passed away. 😢 ( G+ G hobbies in Griffith Indiana was my home away from home) now I have a smaller one that is filling the gap ( Hawker Hobbies in Schererville Indiana)
"Mining For Memories" - you absolutely nailed it, and what a perfect title for your first book!
love it

Max you done a very good job of capturing the spirit of the hobby, the store and Lou / Natalie. ❤ I'll see you next Thursday! 👍🏾
Great conversation, and very nostalgic.
Given that L.A. County has become a paradise for criminals they may need more security after all the media attention.

It's fair to say you've uncovered a gem there Max, mining for memories indeed. Truly mindblowing.

Garfield is right! THIS IS HEAVEN!
My wife just said she's glad we don't live in San Pedro, noting "divorce lawyers are expensive. "
