  • When you think of whisky in the UK, anyone outside thinks that the shelves are full of wonderous whiskies, and they are abundent with Scotch riches! The reality is very different. So think again, and join me as I wander around the stores so you never have to.

    The selection at Waitrose looks great. Great video.

    Great to see you back. Sainsbury's used to sell Ardbeg 10 at £37 on offer every few months or so. I managed to pick up a bottle of The Gauldrons at Waitrose with £25 yellow sticker on it. I should have cleared the shelf instead of picking up only one bottle. 😁

      I’m in the market for an Ardbeg 10 but put off by what seems like an inflated price most places. Cheapest I’ve seen is £43 currently. Yeah a few folk have managed to get some Waitrose bargains! And absolutely, when you see something you’ll go through, no harm in grabbing a few more!

    When I'm in the supermarket with my partner and we walk down the whisky isle she always says is there anything you like? I always reply "no, this is why i shop online for whisky" i do prefer scotch and the supermarket doesn't really sell the stuff that interests me. I will pick up a wild turkey 101 when on offer as its a lovely easy drinking bourbon for the price.

      I get that they can't cater to a small sect8on ofnus, but surely it's got to be easier to pick a few decent ones than scatter gun the same as every other store. Waitrose at least attempt that

    Great vid. I think there’s only a handful of Waitrose in Scotland and the closest one to me is about an hour away so not often I get the chance for a browse but it’s hard not to be impressed after you see what Asda has. M&S a few years ago used to have a small but varied selection I remember seeing Kilchoman, Glenfarclas, Ancnoc and Glen Scotia then they crossed the SWA and pulled all the branded stuff off the shelves. I struggle to comprehend where the market is for all that Whyte and Mackay and Bells is that they can take up so much shelf space. Jack Daniels, Jameson and Johnnie Walker I get, they have stayed trendy in a way.

      Those cheap scotch blends cost pennies to make for the big brands, and the profit it brings in surprised me when I look into it. Your stereotypical pub whiskey drinker in Glasgow will go through 4-6 bottles on average a year at home, hence the saturation in supermarkets. My concern is that if good whisky isn’t readily available and priced accessible, how do new people stumble onto it? It’s so price prohibiting across most supermarkets, but Waitrose at least has some solid picks under £40. It’s not worth an hour drive but always worth popping in if you are passing, as their infamous yellow reduced to clear stickers can be found on some cracking bottles!

      @@drinkswhisky ive always had it in my head these legacy jobbing blends were the choice of older generations who maybe won’t be around in another 10-20 years and will need to follow the Maclean’s Nose and Thompson Bros blends and cut back on the young grain in order to appeal to the malt drinkers who are shrinking away from the new asking price for 18 year old stuff or they will have a hard time going forward. I take your point on the lack of quality options for under £30 that might bring a new drinker in, it’s slim pickings in 2024. It took a chance encounter with a Laphroaig 10 to get me interested in whisky and I picked up a full bottle for under £25 about 8 years ago. It’s still there but the Balvenies, Talisker 10s, Lagavulin 16s, Aberlours, Highland Parks that were sitting next to it are all long gone. The value isn’t there any more in what’s come after, NAS Glenlivets, Aerstones, Jura and Tamnavulin they all seem like the same dram and nothing that’s going to blow anyone’s mind.

    Welcome back. A bourbon themed video would be good. Something new only tried woodford reserve.

      Appreciate the good wishes! Good to be back, I’ve got a lot of videos to edit, and while none are specific to bourbon currently, there are big plans in the works with regards to that! Woodford is a great starting point, also makes a cracking old fashioned

    Any time I’m near a Waitrose I have to pop in. Picked up quite a few ‘reduced to clear’ bargains over the years. Top quality stuff that not a lot of people appreciate so often find a wee hidden gem 💎

      What's been your best pick up?

    • @Willsandi
      @Willsandi 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Probably makers mark 46. Not saying it’s the best stuff but picked it up for about 20 quid. They had bottles and bottles of the stuff all yellow stickered. Think it was so cheap the self scanner checkouts didn’t know what to do cos it was probably below the minimum price per unit of alcohol 😂 anyway some staff member authorised it so I was pretty happy!

    Waitrose is also the premier choice of the refined middle class tourist, let me tell you . I love the place... Got my favorite gin there for half of what it costs in Germany. The other whisky selections looked nearly as drab as in German supermarkets, though it seems the Scotch glut is pushing some higher level brands / expressions onto shelves. There was a Talisker 10 sale at €19,90 before Christmas at a discounter and Kaufland (which belongs to Lidl but has far larger stores) now features Laphroaig, Ardberg Wee Beastie and a few others. bourbon and other American whisky requires specialty dealers here, that's all plain Jim&Jack or worse on the shelves.

    Eagle rare at 32 quid isn’t pricy at all! It’s a steal!

    I’ll be honest with you, I work in hospitality and wholesale prices are shocking too, I don’t think the supermarkets make a huge margin on a lot of them, maybe on the NAS and young malts, but I got a quote less than six months ago for Talisker 10 and Balvenie double at £40-50 a bottle from our supplier, sure supermarkets could probably negotiate better prices but not by much. Sad to say just like coffee in Brazil, and tea in China, the export market kills domestic supply.

      Yeah it’s getting out of hand especially the current duty on a bottle. Pricing out a lot of people who have never had decent whisky. Once cost of living factors in, I’m amazed we are still getting anything drinkable under £40
