Something that, to me, is overlooked is the interaction between Phoenix and Bob. He's sitting in the bar in full view of all the other pilots and is barely given any approval by the other cadets. He is even ostracized a bit. When Phoenix finds out he's her backseater, she quickly includes him in the discussion and almost madates that he play pool with them. She immediatly knows that they are now a team and she is stepping up for him. She also realizes that her chances of success are directly affected by Bob, so she makes it her mission to befriend him or at the very least include him. You can tell when she says to rack the billiard balls that he gets a surprised look that he is being included and accepted despite him not having the tough guy demeanor everyone else there exudes. Its a small 10 second part of a scene, but it always stuck with me.
@hitesh6245 I agree, it's a Hollywood-ized version of the navy and air force. I also look at it like any clique and seeing one person from the popular kids cross the picket line and make friends with the "geek" or "nerd". It resonated with me seeing it in this kind of setting. I like little moments in a scene like this that a lot of people can identify with and feel resonate with them.

@@elpulpo800 I agree with you. But many people think she's a 80's star just because she starred with David Bowie in Labyrinth when she was little girl.
Hangman was that one hot, arrogant, talented jerk with a sense of humor, and a hidden heart of gold, whom everybody loves at the end. 😂 and it was obvious from the start. Also, I laughed so hard when Hangman played 'Slow Ride' at the bar when arguing with Rooster and telling Rooster he sucks because he is too slow. 🤣that was hilarious!
I love Hangman saying "mission is a mission, they don't confront me". Though his arrogance, he was the first to request permission to fly for air cover after Maverick was shot down, and despite his personal dispute with Rooster, he was the one who saved Mav and Rooster at the end. He really lived up to his words.
