Just a thought on point 3. IMHO, part of running your hand along the handle is to maintain awareness of the relationship without looking. Sometimes you have to engage in combat at night, so maintaining awareness of your handle after combat is probably an overlooked aspect of it, because samurai didn’t have the luxury of well lite cities like we do today.

Hey i watched so many Videos of yours. I was unfortunatly not very lucky in my life. I lost both my Parents when i was a child, got always stepped on and that changed me a lot. I am now an powerlifter cause i always felt like i need to be big and strong to win in life. I am the third strongest powerlifter in my country and it didnt helped at all with my mental health. I was always fancinating with the japanese culture and a while ago i found your Chanel and watched like so many Videos of yours. I was meditating before but after i watched a few Videos of your i got my Faszination back in the japanese culture. I bought a sword from the early edo time like 1 year ago and as soon as it arrived i could feel its energy and aura kinda like a bond between me and the Former swordsman of this katana. I practice iaido from books etc now and it really helped me with my mental state. It sounds like a movie but i got more calm, relaxed and focused then i was ever before. Its crazy how much this Training brings to me. And all of that is thanks to you and your Videos to get the Flame from my young age lit up again about Japan. I am planing to travel to Japan now and start my New chapter in life. Thanks for that Shogo!!!! And i dont know if i say or spell it right but Arigato Gozaimas.

9:58 I kinda get that feeling every time I get behind the wheel and drive. One small slip and that's it, you're pulp. It genuinely feels more dangerous than the marksmanship training I received in the Army, because at least there it's a highly controlled environment with layers and layers of safety measures and rules in place. If you aren't constantly mindful of what you're doing, or somebody in the opposite lane or at an intersection isn't, you're going to the hospital, or worse, the morgue. I feel like years of being mindful of that day in and day out has made me a cautious person, occasionally to the point of paranoia.

We were taught that sliding the hand is just to find the tsuka end without looking. Then you reposition the sword in the belt for carrying. Zanshin yes, but in a more practical view - don’t take your eyes off the opponent when you’re still in range.
The thumb thing makes sense, although it does protect the thumb a little bit if your blade has accidentally slid out a bit and you think you’re grabbing the saya but get the blade. Slim comfort, you still need first aid.

Okay 3:00 , never heard your previous explanation in over 30 years. The seal the katana is the idea, but be gentle, soft, not forceful, you don’t want to make the katana loose in the saya, that should come only from wear of practice.
Also you only see it in koryu (or from what I’ve seen Iai that’s trying to pretend it’s like koryu). You don’t see this movement in recently constructed sets like the ZNKR Seitei Iaidō.

I train in Iaido and I enjoyed this video, thank you!
    1. That is interesting that some styles require the koikuchi to be loose. I was taught not too tight, not too loose. Although, mine is too loose right now, and I am enjoying the ease in which I can draw it, perhaps I am procrastinating tightening it a little :).
    2. I never knew why you put your thumb on the side...I was just told I better always have it in the right place! (I also never thought to ask!) Interesting.
    3. May I ask what style or set of katas have that movement, where you slide your hand along the handle? I only have the 12 seitei katas. Is that koryu?
    4. Practicing zanshin makes sense for chuburi, thank you for that explanation. Although, currently I am working on the correction that I am not placing power in the correct part of my chiburi...my sensei said I would make a mess hahahahahha.
    5. I cannot speak for others, but I train Iaido partially for fun, and because I think it makes me a better martial artist overall. Sure, I won't practically use a sword in my everyday life, but I have been enjoying applying the principles I learn in Iaido to my other martial arts. I also enjoy the culture aspect, and I think it's important to learn and pass down (if one is qualified of course.)
Don't know who will actually see this comment, but thanks for reading it!

I started practicing Shinkendo since 2013 and what kept me doing it and why I really enjoyed it is because it was the only time where I felt I can live in the "present" moment, not thinking and worrying about the past/future because when someone is swinging a wooden sword at your head, you better be paying attention and block! Otherwise you might get smacked in the head! I started during a difficult time in my life and I felt it was the only time I can be at 'peace' with myself... was when there was a sword being swung at me!

Shogo-san's honestly and integrity was never in doubt. We all make mistakes in our individual pursuits and learn new things along the way. As a musician I was taught one way by my initial teacher but learnt differently when studying with other teachers later in my development. The fact Shogo-san is able to be open and honest about his growth is proof that he is both an excellent student and teacher. Only a bad teacher believes there is nothing more to learn.

  • @CraigHocker
    @CraigHocker 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Interesting opinion 2:20 With a sharp katana even a slight chance of cutting your thumb is better avoided. If you think there is no chance then it probably means (and looks like you showed) that you are missing the correct movement of the left hand to wrap the middle finger around the koiguchi on your draw. If you are not doing that, I could understand why you think there is little chance of cutting the thumb. As for the idea of thumb on the side making it easier to turn, that IMO is just poor technique / strategy. It means you have committed to a certain draw - like kiri age sooner than you should. The initial draw is almost always edge up with the angle of the cut not revealed or committed to till later in the draw rather than at the beginning of the draw. In that case this explanation you give for the thumb is just nonsense.

After watching this, what really interests me about Iaido, is not the fact you get to swing a sword around - but the little techniques in between. When practicing Kung Fu, what I loved about it was learning how tweaking and executing certain moves allowed me to both control the shift in gravity on my body as well as generating a lot of energy within a short range of motion. Also, being able to actually feel the flow of energy throughout my body and getting a sense of a grounded connection to it has really benefitted me in both mental and physical health. Learning and mastering technique is so rewarding on so many levels.

Number 3 answers number 1. It should be right, but you cut koiguchi before you draw. Sayas become loose from “iai” training, but wouldn’t have been like that in the field as the blade would rust and be dangerous to carry.

I train Iai because A) I love it and B) to master some aspects of it, I first have to master aspects of myself. Presence of mind, timing, rhythm, nerves, habits, etc.
I find that, while of course we can say we want to make these changes and better ourselves, without a set of daily actions planned out, it's quite difficult to reach such a goal.
For me, Iai narrows my focus and provides both the ends and the means to many of these goals.

I loved this video. I haven't done Iaido but I have done HEMA. There is something so sincere, realistic and honest about your videos.
I feel that I learn more every time I watch one :D
Your videos have teached me so much, not only what is Iaido about. But also how many aspects of Japan work as they do.
Thank you so much for your great work.
If you are interested in visiting Finland or ever happen to come by. Let me know if you want to meet some locals.
I would be honored to receive you as guest and share my sauna with you.

I’ve noticed, you speak just as Samurai training documents are written. Which I find extremely interesting. Shogo, what do You think of the Japanese documents Translated onto English by Anthony Cummins? The Book of Samurai (2 volumes) and The Book of Ninja.

@LetsaskShogo, Thank you for another educational video, Shogo-sama. Recently I'm debating the question if samurai would still be able to go to heaven (according to their believe) after committing seppuku.

Iaido Ryu controversies are kind of funny. Iai is REALLY far removed from a practical combative so why argue about which one is "realistic" or not? To me Iai is about demonstrating control, grace, and accuracy. It is not practiced force on force, so any argument on this avenue is purely academic and silly.

So many people expose others, but it takes a lot of guts, honesty and introspection to expose oneself. There are victims and students. This video is what students do and it deserves incredible respect.

Training martial skills/arts is ultimately about discipline and appreciation of life, both are expressed by projecting physical power. So I agree with Saki-sensei, practicing martial is one way of refining soul. Definitely not useless at all, on other hand it shouldn’t be use as a way to abuse power because at best it would dent our soul, at worst it would broke it.

As usual, some things are practical, and some are ceremonial/gestural.
While it is important to seek reason and meaning in what we do, sometimes it's just as simple as "it's something we do". Not everything is about merit or advantage!

So why is the sealing of the Blade done in such A way, rather than simply pushing on the pommel, like is done at the end of the move? Other than æsthetic, of course?

I'm happy to hear you talk about maturing as a sword art practitioner. Everything you said resumes to knowing more than you did in the past. That's how it should be. 👍

Thank you Shogo! When I studied iaido my sensei I also told the class that the reason the thumb was on the side of the tsuba to not cut our thumbs also.
We were told that we run our hands down the tsuka to make sure the tsuka-ito or the kashira didn’t come loose.
There was one sensei from another school, and I’ve heard this from other people a lot, that the hakama are designed to hide your feet. To give a mystic air like you are floating but to also hide your foot movements. My sensei said they are just pants and were the style of the day. Especially since there are records of people pulling up the bottom of the legs and tucking them in the waistband to not trip. I’ve also seen some for sale that have loops on the bottom for this specific purpose.

i was trained to have it stay in but easy to use your thumb to push out then draw, to carry yes thumb over to keep it from coming out, i do like the thumb on the side nice.. your right on #3 # 4 always wondered why like your results etc. and the oil on the blade keeps things off. but wipe with fingers no. great job

For me personally training any martial art at all is about mastering oneself. If done properly it allows the person to improve their discipline as well as learning what body and mind can do. It practically allows us to improve ourselves in many, many aspects

So this is going to sound absolutely perplexing. Is there a katana that will not break or warp but here is the odd part, will not cut. So I currently own a gun for home protection and would like to have something I can use in my hand that will not kill a person (assuming they aren't a life or death threat.) I believe a blunt katana that will not cut would be perfect because you'd have control and no risk of cutting a limb off, I'm ok with breaking bones.
