Salmon fishing season canceled for 2023 in California

  • Salmon season is closed for all of 2023 in California. The Dept. of Fish and Wildlife says the drought from recent years limited salmon's ability to breed, and now there aren't enough to open the commercial season. Fishers say it is a massive financial burden. abc7ne.ws/3yLbDS9

I feel terrible for the fisherman losing income, hopefully they can make it somehow… however like the fisheries dept. said, if salmon can’t breed then they need time to recover, good stewardship of fisheries is far more important than allowing people to make money until the fish population is destroyed completely.

So you're saying the Chinese are bringing ships across the ocean to fish in San Francisco instead because the fish on this side of the Atlantic taste better? What nonsense, where the proof Russians and Chinese are stealing our fish? Sounds to me like a combination of climate change because of the drought has resulted in salmon being unable to make it back up riverbanks to lay eggs. There were a bunch of salmon dying the last few years not able to get through shallow waters, each of those would have laid thousands of eggs if conditions were normal. It turns out when you cut down trees your grandfather's grew and don't plant new ones for the next generation, you no longer have shade from the sun so this is no surprise since california government has been selling selling off our water to big corps while we starve because the fish all die.

Go to the mouth of the Smith River in NorCal, and count how many are just waiting for salmon to show up and devour them.
Same would happen. Sea Lions aren't dumb. They go wherever the food sources are. At Bonneville dam. Ballard Locks in Seattle as examples.
Let the Indians harvest marine mammals like they did it in the past.

California fishery is to blame. Back in 80s I remember salmon fishing and the charter boats would go out 3 times a day catching limits of salmon every day.they were big salmon 30 to 40lbs. Limiting the water to rivers not allowing salmon to breed. Look at new Zealand and there river free flowing rivers. Other countries that have good salmon runs with free flowing river.

    • @solandri69
      @solandri69 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@louisliu5638 The water rights date back to the settler days. Probably was considered essential to allow settlers who lived there to dig a well or tap a river so they could survive. Over the years, agricorps bought the land from the individual owners, including the water rights. The proper legal solution is for the state to exercise eminent domain - forcibly take or reduce the water rights while compensating the owners for the decrease in land value that would cause. But obviously the state doesn't want to spend that much money. So nothing gets done. Important lesson that the government giving stuff away willy-nilly to please constituents can come back to bite us in the long run.
Also, the salmon were originally decimated by damming many of the rivers in central and northern California (for irrigation, flood control, and hydroelectric power). Once the salmon populations declined to threatened or endangered levels, they became so susceptible to things like drought as to make a fishery shutdown necessary. IOW, drought, agriculture, and fishing are not the direct cause of the decline in salmon, they're just exacerbating factors.

They did the same thing for striper over here on east coast and the stripers have come back 10 fold they didn't need to shut the season to do it. I bet this will make zero impact by next year this stuff takes years to make and effect. It took 10 plus years for the striper fishery to get back to where it was but. I was fishing for trout in the Klamath River this year from July to October.
At the mouth of the Scott river, you could count hundreds of King salmon in September.
The upper part of the river was full of salmon all the way to I-5. First time I've seen this part of the river not choked with green algae. The removal of dams and increased water flows really helped.
When Iron gate gets taken out, I expect to see even more improvement in water quality.
Baby fish were in good numbers this year. So were the famed half pounders.

Thinking it’s an unlimited resource just shows their ignorance. Not having a plan B and adjusting to what is available and catchable isn’t the department of wildlife’s problem or fault. Just a taste of what is Ahead ! Fisheries are Crashing all over the Earth ! Oceans are Super Heating, Florida just recorded water temps of 101 degrees, Galveston recently recorded air temps on the coast 125 degrees ! July 2023 is the Hottest Month Ever Recorded, it was by far the hottest month I haver ever seen in my life ! Earth is in uncharted territory climate wise, whole coral reefs dying !! Whole Forests Dying and half the Earth is on fire now, very little if any real breathable air now

      NO…..you don’t know

Go Vegan now save the planet in the process. There is not enough fish in the sea. Without fish plankton will die and we will lose oksygen supply. All these fishermen could use their boats to clean up the ocean.

this is why the California department of fish and wildlife makes scientific analysis on the the quantity of all fish ..sometimes they will allow fishing in some areas, and close down others...just for the commercial and sports fishermen dont wipe out a species ..because if it was left up to them, they would extinct anything they can sell in one season !
