  • Time to get building again. The garage conversion requires the floor to be raised to match the house so first job is to build a suspended floor. Good chance to try out the new framing nailer which dented the wallet last month!

    Man I know absolutely ZERO about carpentry but have decided to take on converting our laundry room into a small full bathroom with a smallish shower stall. Thank You for this video and all your hard work. Very informative and a good starting point for me in getting an idea about where I need to start.

      David Mishra I sold two paslode IM350s and cope with one hitachi now. For the main reason it is so much more reliable than the old paslodes. Cheaper to run and quieter. I’d not go back now. My finish guns will be hitachi very soon too.

    Why didn't you put felt on the little wall (between the masonry wall and the pressure treated wood wall) as well? Keep up the good work, gives me lots of ideas!

    Great vid as ever Tim. Just a layman's question here but why the dwarf wall in wood and the long span when the tried and trusted is to use block and a central dwarf wall? It's just that the wood wall could suffer a catastrophic failure in 40 years time say in a way that blocks couldn't. Perhaps I am paranoid but it is not what you usually see that's all.

    Hi, I have started looking for a nailer for an upcoming project. Can you tell us what led you to the Hitachi? Why a cordless vs compressor driven gun for example and once you had decided on cordless what led you purchase the hitachi. Cheers.
    PS loving the videos as usual, just watched the latest, it was good to see you are human after all 😋. DIY for me is always a battle between the satisfaction of getting my hands dirty doing it myself vs the frustration when things don’t go right first time around. Anyway keep up the good work mate.

    Hi,
    Question: What type of screw did you use to attached the sill plate to the concrete floor? Was it some sort of self-tapping concrete screw?

    Quick query- do I build the same joist setup for a flat roof as you did on the floor? I’m doing a small pantry in the garage and don’t really want it going to the existing roof. Thanks!

    Tim, you're rocking! I, for one, am *very* interested to see your "planning" video as I can't quite get the last of the land from this video.
    Do the washer, dryer, etc. ultimately get moved up to the level of the new floor (extended right the way across the room)?

    • @TheRestorationCouple
      @TheRestorationCouple  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The raised area will be the laundry, utility and we. There will be a dividing wall and a few steps down to the main room which will have a new insulated floor at slab level.

    Apologies if this is a silly question... But why didn't you apply the DPC membrane to the board that was screwed into the wall (the one from which the joists hang)..??
    Isn't that subject to rotting the same as the ones placed on the floor?

    Talking of Building Regs - what is your plan for the wall where you took the external door out? Stud wall? Since it's an external wall how are you planning on insulating it? And would a stud wall satisfy current building regs u values? I ask as I have an idea to enclose a porch but looking at BRs it seems to be a problem getting the acceptable u value without making the wall 300mm thick!

    • @TheRestorationCouple
      @TheRestorationCouple  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The walls will be internal stud with pir between and over timbers. This adds on around 120mm. Next video or two will explain.

    • @kjd2869
      @kjd2869 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Tim, that's what I'm planning so I'll be watching closely for some tips! The wife is paranoid it's "going to be cold" and my showing her lots of u-value diagrams and wooden houses in 4ft of snow in Norway doesn't convince her!
      Often its the figuring out of the best way to do something that's the hardest part rather than actual DIY competence with there being so many "right" ways and new methods / materials etc. Your vids have helped me along several times over my own ongoing refurb of a 70's bungalow so many thanks for that and good luck with the project.

    Another great video, I've got a large decking and fencing project in my garden coming up , do you rate the hitachi frame nailer and the evolution mitre saw ? What model is it ? Great work

    • @TheRestorationCouple
      @TheRestorationCouple  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Saw is ok, had it 8 years. Fine for DIY and landscaping but wouldn't buy another, based on the fact i would prefer more accuracy for when I do more precise joinery, trim, furniture projects. But you can't go wrong for the price. Nailer is a bit excessive for home projects really as you could buy a decent impact and screws and still spend half of the cost of the nailer, especially as decks are probably best screwing down anyway and hangers you need to hammer in so not too much use. Fencing would benefit but again, it's a cost v benefit thing.

  • @Carl-yu6uw

    I think you mentioned that you are considering building a timber framed extension to the house..I am seeing a lot of framed house builds with brick outer skin go up these days so although my place is standard block and brick cavity wall, I'm interested in extending by framing it out myself and maybe have brickies in to skin it. You have stone there though, would you seek to match that externally doing the masonry leaf yourself too or maybe renderboard & render over the framed extension? Just curious on tf used in conjunction with traditional masonry /cavity construction..Be a great project to watch though, not seen such a job covered on TH-cam yet!

    • @TheRestorationCouple
      @TheRestorationCouple  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I said timber frame I meant solid oak so would probably be oak clad and glazed. That said we do intend to do conventional timber frame construction on a future project which would be finished in stone and larch so may be a future video to come.

      Not silly. Yes and no, as we are converting then we will get it all done but if we were to keep it outside of the house envelope I think it doesn’t, possibly only if it is over a certain height and needs steps, railings, etc.

      BMJT Building Control have a great website where I discovered I needed approval from them after swapping out an oil boiler new for old. Could have got an approved installer to certify the work but decided to pay the £140 and have the inspector visit. House sale requirement. Having done three self builds I was shocked at how much home improvement work now requires approval. Better to check early than have it delay any future sale. Also bld regs guy very helpful with info.

      Used a bit of a combo actually. Nails cheaper, quicker and stronger in most situations. Screws where I needed to pull timbers tight or where there were slight twists to straighten. Nails obviously for the hangers! 😀

      @@TheRestorationCouple ha ha nice one. Good effort anyway with the work. With the wall you mortared under to level (not flat as you keep saying lol) why didn't you screw into the wall same as the other side and mortar under or screw into wall and cut the studs accordingly?

    • @TheRestorationCouple
      @TheRestorationCouple  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      At that point there was a chance the studs above would be load bearing when we changed the roof so figured a full mortar bed would be better. In the end we used the block piers so at best it’s just a solid support for the washing machine! 😀
