You may not have noticed--you were talking at the time (which is your job)--but I think Hanks' best acting moment in the film (maybe all time) was when, after he was told he was a dad, he asked Jenny "is he smart? Or..." that broke me when I saw this film in theaters when it was first released. Unbelievable.

Correction... (her job in the video is not to talk over everything)... people need to start paying more attention to the movies and talk less because most of the time the reactor is either confused or misses too much stuff or complains they didn't hear what the characters said... try watching the movie more and don't talk over the actors or there's really no point in making a video... if this is how people actually watch movies at their home for the first time, no thanks because that would be annoying... BTW FYI the definition of reaction doesn't mean to talk it means to feel or think a certain way in response to something... these youtubers might as well call these videos commentaries instead of reactions cause all they want to do is talk, how you gonna talk over an entire movie you've never seen before and act like you got the full experience of the film while complain that you didn't understand certain things

  • @jonbruton3557

So glad that you do get Jenny. I think Jenny was the second most important person in the movie. The movie showed her life from basically the same time as it started with Forest. [some reactors get Jenny wrong, allot of reactors love Forest so much they don't like Jenny] She truly loved Forest and had the same deep down kind nature as he. She was the only one to befriend him on the bus at the very start to show her good nature. [and continued to be his good friend through high school, imagine how hard that was with all the bullies still on Forrest's case, so to speak] Others will comment on the trauma she would have had to deal with [an obviously very deep wounding of her] so I won't go into that, just point out that they [as the two main subjects of the plot] were basically two kind hearted and worthy people from two different upbringings. She talks of how their lives are so different. [recognizing her flaws] She repeatedly lets Forrest know she Does Love Him [always in a sad tone, knowing she could hurt the one true constant good in her life if she let him into hers then] And not wanting to hurt the only true one she did love would say "You don't want to marry me" [imagine how it must have hurt her to have to tell him that!]. She had to fix herself [with no help from anyone in those days -totally on her own to heal herself] before worthiness could take place. Forrest helped everyone! And the way he helped her was finally to let her find the first true lovemaking she had ever done after she recovered at his house. [her choice finally to see it's OK to have a good man watch over her as she obviously made the best decision of her life to "clean up" -with all the sleeping that was needed] When she agreed with Forrest that he would make a good husband on those stairs it led to the final "fix" that happened when she would have felt so badly when he thought she didn't love him. She finally allowed herself to express to him [and herself] the lovemaking she had never known and was always afraid to accept. It was real. It was good. [for both of them] And it was time to leave [yes, once again] but this time Not Running. It was time to make herself a good clean life without his help to be sure she wouldn't hurt him to be with him. [remember she was really new to the clean life, with just those few weeks or so clean so far] She proved it to herself and It isn't clear in the movie but she may well have written the letter for him to come before she found out her condition [he was running for years] and either way I believe she would have contacted Forrest about his child even if she had not come down with Hepatitis C [a not defined or understood illness back then -it wasn't aids as the author has said it was Hep C] Remember when she left the last time she would not have known she was pregnant yet, just that she needed to be sure she was worthy to live up to the love she felt for him that night of her first true loving. Two deep down Good People, with very different lives who none the less helped each other throughout their life's even as differently as it went for them. One finding it very easy to let the deep-down good person show, the other struggling greatly to let that nature show. Together it showed in both of them easily. It was a true love story from beginning to end. That's all I got to say about that.

"Like an old school Airbnb" 😅
The bnb in Airbnb used to be an abbreviation for bed & breakfast, only one of which Airbnbs generally provide for guests, making the name something of a misnomer.
Renting rooms was pretty common for widows and spinsters, and given the size of the Gump's plantation 😬, Mrs Gump probably did alright.

My jaded cynicism takes a back seat whenever this is on and I enjoy it everytime I see it. Another great reaction. I do so enjoy your humor and insight. Even your manner of speech is enjoyable. HEy Shree, the events of the U.S. presidents throughout the movie are used as a time tool stamp by the writer to let the audience know where we are without having to say the date. From President Kennedy to Geroge McGovern, To Nickson and Watergate, to Jimmy Carter fainting, to Regan's assassination attempt. If you were old enough to have lived through all those events you would know exactly where in time those events took place. If you are younger and watching this movie or reading the book. It would give you the incentive to do research to understand the time periods.

Jenny's father taught her love hurts and she needs that to feel whole. Forrest is the opposite, which is why she thinks he 'don't know what love is'. It's not a belief she doesn't 'deserve' love, she is protecting him from her version of love.

Hi Shree, fantastic reaction, thank you. I really appreciate your empathy and compassion for Jenny and Lt. Dan. They were both broken people who were blessed to have Forrest in their life.
My take on the assassinations that keep happening is that they’re there to set the time period and the background feeling for the story. This movie takes place from the 50s to the 80s. Forrest and Jenny were in the heart of the baby boomer generation. I think the historical events were the hook that pulled a lot of people in emotionally to a really fantastical story.

Shree, your comment on Jenny made me laugh in such a serious moment. Shree: "Jenny, you're not a bird, stop trying to be one."
That's what this movie does, adds a touch of humor to moments that are otherwise deadly serious. In order to make these very difficult subjects platable enough for us to discuss. I believe this was a deliberate device used in the book writer's cadence.

I didn't know that particular acronym when I first heard it. Turns out, it's not an officially established military term. It stands for "F*cking New Guys." _Every_ military command has a generally unflattering nickname for the new guy, because odds are, this guy has a higher than average tendency not to know where anything _is_ or how anything _works._

A klick is military jargon for a kilometer. 10 klicks is 10 kilometers. It originated in Vietnam with the Australian military but is commonly used in any English-speaking country's infantry now. What Lt. Dan goes through is actually very common among survivors. It's an incredible weight of guilt in knowing that you lived but so many people you cared about were taken, and that feeling of "What did I do to deserve my life when such good people were taken?". Dan's resolution and marrying an Asian-American woman is also a sort of small detail that points to his reconciliation with Vietnam. Many veterans who witnessed horrors in Vietnam began to harbor an anti-Asian sentiment after returning. The experience Gary Sinise (Lt. Dan) had during this movie led him to do amazing charity work for veterans. He's a real stand-up guy.
EDIT: I also like the extremely minor detail that the bus driver Dorothy has quit smoking and started chewing gum instead between the time Forrest Sr. was going to school and when Forrest Jr. starts school.

It's alluded to that Jenny died of HIV because of the time period, but I think either Robert Semeckis or the writers later stated that she actually died of Hepatitis from her drug use. Jenny's story is tragic. No self worth. Self destructive. Felt she was only worthy of abusive relationships. The birth of little Forrest was probably what finally made her look at herself positively.

Because of the way she was abused by herfather when she was a kid, Jenny has always felt she was worth nothing and because of that, she adopted a self-destructing attitude (and she choosed guys who disrespected her, always finding 'em some excuses).
The reason she rejected Forrest was to protect him : She knew that if she had allowed him to be part of her life, her life-stile would have destroyed him so she sacrificed her feelings for him to protect him. Only when she had her life stabilised did she allowed him to be a part of it.
And the reason why Lt Dan. doesn't allow anyone to insult Forrest is that he knows that, even if he's pissed that because of Forrest he has to live as a crippled man, he knows that Forrest did it out of good heart and he knows that Forrest is a good person, someone who will always be there to help him and never ask for anything in return.

The film decided to alter its events and presentation to make it 'A Triumpn Of The Human Spirit" and 'The Feel-Good Hit Of The Summer." But yeah, originally it was just a comedy about a goofball who got into all kinds of crazy adventures. They left out the parts where he was sent into space with a gorilla, and featured as the monster in a horror flick starring Raquel Welch.

Just something to think on… Please try not to perpetuate the “you can’t love anyone else/be loved til you love yourself” thing. There are a lot of pieces to Jennie’s character… but it simply isn’t true. People who are damaged are loved all the time, and love others, wholly. Perpetuating this idea takes hope away from those of us who don’t love ourselves. There are so many of us out here and we deserve love, too… and many of us already have never felt it or believe we will never feel it. It’s extra hurtful to hear it followed by something along the lines of “if you’re damaged at a young age the trauma might be too much to ever fully overcome”. I highly doubt that’s what you meant to say but it ends up sounding like there’s simply no hope for some people to ever experience love. It’s not a fun message to hear. Sincerely, someone working really hard at trying to love herself.

When it's mentioned about John F. Kennedy being shot while riding in his car, that was during a visit to Dallas, TX in 1963. His "little brother", as Forrest called him, was Senator Robert F. Kennedy, who was apparently the attorney general during his brother's time as president. In 1968, it looked like he was going to receive the Democrat nomination for that year's presidential election. However, shortly after giving what seemed like a triumphant speech at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, he was tragically gunned down after trying to leave through the hotel's kitchen.

A "click" is slang for a kilometer. The "pig" is slang for the M-60 (machine gun). Lieutenant Dan was experiencing PTSD related survivor's guilt. Rice paddies and the adjacent irrigation ditches are feces, snake, mosquito, and leach infested. Forrest and his unit were operating in the Mekong Delta (wetlands, swamps, and marshes). Lastly, the monsoon season afforded GI's relative safety because of the flooding and submerged terrain. Bad weather will literally cease all combat operations.

I think as a character Forrest was blessed by God for all he was lacking in intelligence. His earnest attempts to keep his promises put people like Jenny, Bubba, and Lieutenant Dan in his life. Forrest was likewise a blessing to others around him, like Lt Dan and others as well. Loved the movie and your reaction! Keep the reactions going!

Thanks for displaying empathy for Jenny. Cuz, as a film, Forrest Gump has what I call the "Jenny Problem" -- an obvious contempt for the smartest and most open-minded character in the story.
The film turns her into a villain, or at least an antagonist, to constantly remind us how innocent Forrest is. I've seen other TH-cam reactions, and people absolutely hate her. That's the film's fault. The screenwriter seems to have a clear attitude about people like Jenny... and they're misguided and shallow, think.
Meanwhile, Forrest stumbles through history, "crushing it American style" -- at one point even be celebrated for his part in the Vietnam War. Let's be clear, the Vietnam War had no heroes. It was started and waged for years based on lies, but don't tell Forrest that.. You can't tell him. AND that's just how Uncle Sam prefers 'em -- dumb and ready to comply.
Forrest remains oblivious thru it all, not unlike oblivious Americans who seem to also get points these days by being simple-minded. That's the real metaphor of the movie - celebrate the sheep while the open-minded, drug using, std having, trauma victims, are the wicked -- the villains. They're not, and the movie's attitudes about them are wrong-headed.
Jenny didn't "lead-on" Forrest or even treat him poorly. She was, in part, trying to protect him.. but also -- protecting herself... it's not her responsibility to love him back.
Also, she didn't avoid telling Forrest about their son together. Forrest was physically unavailable as he was running around the country for 3.5 years.

    Psalm 15: of David.
LORD, who may abide in your tent?
Who may dwell on your holy mountain?
    Whoever walks without blame,
    doing what is right,
    speaking truth from the heart;
Who does not slander with his tongue,
does no harm to a friend,
    never defames a neighbor;
    Who disdains the wicked,
    but honors those who fear the LORD;
Who keeps an oath despite the cost,
    lends no money at interest,
accepts no bribe against the innocent.
    Whoever acts like this
    shall never be shaken.

48:30 that really cracks me up, because of a sticker I saw posted recently in a public restroom. It said "Fight The New Order" and had a web address for something called thewhiterose...and after a moment's thought, I distilled the semantic content of it to mean "Don't do what THEY tell you! Do what I tell you, instead!"

A 'click' in terms of distance means 'kilometer' So @20:00 when you hear they have '10 clicks to go to the river', it means they have 10 kilometers to go to the river.
In American terms, 1 kilometer is equivalent to around 0.62 miles.

You make me Shush my computer screen when you talk over the best lines in the movie, it's the reason you miss critical parts. Jenny did get the best peace she could have hoped for, the fact the two people she loved most in the "whole wide world" would lovingly share their life together. I really love watching movies with people and if you would tweak your commentary to brief note like bits during the movie and save extended commentary for the end you would be a top reactor, imho. Hope the best for you either way.

    1. The music rights alone must have cost a small mint💲💲
    2. Having gotten his degree Forrest would have gone into the Army as an officer like Lt. Dan. Not a recruit.
    3. He actually saved Lt Dan twice. Once in the field and again to get him out of his post war funk and Dan turned his life around.
    4. Jenny did indeed give him the best gift ever (it wasn't the shoes)😋
    5. Jenny died of Hep-C from dirty needles when she was in Caliphony..
    6. It's ionic that Lt. Dan told the guys to take care of their feet because he looses his.
    7. You have had a ride through recent US history and culture. From Elvis to John Lennon, Vietnam to the jogging craze of the 70's.
About the only thing left out was streaking but that wasn't touched.
    8. "Sometimes there're just aren't enough rocks"
    9. Haley Joel Osmentt/Forrest Jr. steals the show in "The Sixth Sense" with Bruce Willis.
    10. Often when he's finishing a segment about death he ends it by saying "That's all I have to say about that"
    11. In the book Forrest isn't always that nice of a guy.
    12. Another Hanks and Gary Sinise (kind of) is "The Green Mile"
Finally Sinise, if you want to see Gary Sinise hit a grand slam you need to watch Stephen King's "The Stand" Original

A college degree alone does not mean a person will enter the army as an officer. Since Forrest didn't attend a service academy and wasn't in ROTC at 'Bama, he would have had to attend OCS (Officer Candidate School) in order to be an officer.

Hello Beautiful, nice to see you reacting again, this is one of Tom Hanks masterpieces I think the whole point of this movie is that no matter what your limitations are in life you can accomplish anything with the right attitude life is what you make it Forrest had a strength, and for him and Bubba having low IQs they seemed to function better than people who had no limitations... anyways Im so glad you enjoyed this movie, I also loved Curious George and the Man in the yellow hat, when I was a kid, did you ever read the book "Where the Wild things are"? Still waiting for you to react to "Fire in the sky" and Mel Gibson's "Apocalypto" until then God Bless and stay Beautiful 😍

Firstly sorry you're not having the a great time then, hopefully by the time of my comment things are better. And is that a bullet around your neck? Cool!!
Indeed a lot of common English phrases that have entered the vernacular came from movies. My favorite when we encounter an unusual cultural tradition or custom, or law, I would always say, or someone would, "We aren't in Kansas, Toto".
Curious George was one of my favorites too.
Haha yeah he pretty much did tell his life story, to a stranger. Sorry I am not exactly a fan of Nathan Bedford Forrest, I am sure some of your subscribers here will hate on me for that.
Yes that was Elvis all right! 😏 The ongoing theme is Forrest keeps running into famous celebrities throughout his life including US Presidents.
Remember Forrest is mentally handicapped, so what he thinks is affection, Jenny was being abused, physically and sexually 🥺
Actually on the football field, he was about to go out of bounds.
This movie pioneered some amazing effects such as rotoscoping which is how they made "footage" with JFK. And JFK's brother Robert Kennedy was assassinated in 1968.
Unfortunately, during the Vietnam War, many young men were drafted, so Bubba may not of had a choice but to go to Vietnam. It did appear that Forrest did volunteered.
I kind of disagree with you about being in war, yes, you should not take foolish risks, but surviving means looking out for your war comrades, and sometimes you have to take a risk to get out of dangerous situation. But that's just my perspective and based on my life experience.
A click can be either an imperial mile or a kilometer.
Bubba, or "Shrimp" was killed and Forrest survived and carried Bubba's dream.
Yes that scene in front of the Washington Monument and the Mall was a real gathering and protest. It highlighted how extremely unpopular the Vietnam War had become in the US. It started the negative public attitude towards the veterans, and the setting in Rambo. It wasn't until 1990s after the First Gulf War that attitude changed.
AFAIK Forrest Gump is not based on a real person. Maybe other commenters can comment on that.
LT Dan really showed true friendship when he threw out those ladies and stood up for his friend. The saying "bros before hoes" is illustrated here quite well. And he was played by Gary Sinise and yes he is a very good actor.
I will always before small sponsor, Shree 😁
She didn't come to her senses, she just chickened out.
Noooo, he was invested Apple in the 70s, so even better 😏
When someone chose to be in abusive relationships then comes crawling back to you, it's never a good thing. As cruel as this may sound, I would have turned away Jenny. Forrest deserved a lot lot better and Jenny is damaged goods and unwilling to get help. I've been burned that way and it sucks.
We just had some assassinations in our country, I think that's all there is to it.
I agree with your conclusions, this movie is a classic. And YESSSSSS you are most worthy of love, Shree!

People always talk about this as a tale about a survivor. My issue is that Forrest gets used by people throughout his story, especially by Jenny. She has him marry her to give her son a good life, not because of real affection.

    • @unimatrix0169
      @unimatrix0169 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Jenny had issues way back before they were recognized as actual problems that need help. Back then it was just get over it; ain't that easy. The abuse she suffered as a child warped everything in her life and there were no programs available for victims in that time period. People keep forgetting this story isn't set in modern times but covers the years from the 50's - 80's. She kept leaving Forrest because she realized she would just bring him down; she loved him enough not to do that to him. Little Forrest was the reason she finally stopped running and felt real love. She couldn't tell Forrest earlier because he was running for 3+ years and unreachable. I think she married him because she knew he would be a good father and that MAYBE she was afraid the state would try to take his son away because they wouldn't consider him to be a 'responsible' adult.
