Since Jules retired after the miracle, it was Marsellus and Vincent staking out Butch's apartment. They probably didn't expect Butch to come back, either way Marsellus stepped out for them some coffee and donuts or whatever. That's why Butch ran into him after leaving his place down the street.

Now that you say it I kinda understand it's not a "well played" scene indeed. But that's it. I just ignore it, not hate it.
He's objectively TERRIBLE in this. And he's not only my favorite director of all time, but this is my favorite of his movies. The LINES were hilarious and interesting, which is what you're responding to. But the acting was absolutely horrendous. Like, embarrassingly horrible. I'd actually be really surprised if one or many of his actor friends didn't try to talk him out of doing the scene, but he was too stubborn to back down. I can only just let it slide because the "Dead N Storage" moment was one of the funniest parts in the whole movie. But the acting was shockingly bad.

Bucemi's waiter is Buddy, as in Buddy Holly... they dance "The Twist" and the "Batuci" from the Batman show,, 2 popular dances from the 60s, and they have an Ed Sullivan impersonator... he was the host of the biggest variety show of the 60s, that also introduced The Beatles to America.
It wasn't the "Batusi", it was the Watusi (a stupid dance from the early 1960's, but there you go), which the Batusi was a parody of on Batman. And The Ed Sullivan Show ran from the 1940's to the 1970's. It wasn't exactly a 60's show.
Steve Buscemi has been in a ton of great movies, but his performance in Boardwalk Empire was phenomenal! Fun fact, if it hasn't already been mentioned, but he was also a fireman before he got famous, and he volunteered with the first responder firemen in NYC when 9/11 happened. Not for the publicity or anything, it wasn't found out he was there until waaaaay after the fact. He was just there as a citizen fireman helping out.
Lesser-known fun fact: the filming of Spy Kids 2 was around the time of 9/11. Which means the line 'Do you think God stays up in heaven because he, too, lives in fear of what he's created' would have been fresh in his mind as he helped put out the fires.
Someone broke "Pulp Fiction" down to me as a series of interconnecting storylines. In which each person is the protagonist in their own story. So when each story is happening the story comes from the protagonist's point of view. When Jules is in the room speaking to Brad, it's from his point of view. When Butch has to go back for the watch and save Marcellus it's from his point of view. When Vincent goes to dinner with Mia it's from Vincent's point of view. So although the characters and storylines have interconnection, it all depends on the lens through which it is viewed. AT the start of the movie we see the robbery through the eyes of Bonnie and Clyde, by the end of the movie we see it through the eyes of Jules because he is a more important character throughout the plot of this movie. Everyone is surprised when Vincent gets killed, but he was in Butch's storyline when he got shot. An amazing way to flip the perspective of multiple seemingly unrelated storylines throughout a movie. Using the subtext of one storyline to drive the plot of another storyline.
This isn't exactly a new technique however. Akira Kurosawa first used it in his 1950 masterpiece Rashomon, telling the story of a rape/murder of a bride and her samurai husband from 4 different perspectives with overlapping timelines. The American film maker Robert Altman used similar techniques in his 1970's masterpieces Nashville and McCabe and Mrs. Miller. Tarantino however did apply the technique to his post modernist film style making a different kind of movie to what mainstream audiences were used to. One thing that was different about the 1980s and 90s from today is that film was a lot more daring and unpredictable.
I used to think Marcelus walking on the street was a coincidence, but in hindsight, he was probably on the mission with Travolta substituting for the retired Jackson.
If you think of the scenes in order, it's a movie about a couple of hitmen who get sign after sign over the course of a day telling them to quit the life, Jules does, but Vincent doesn't. The very next day, a bizarre confluence of events leads to Vincent's death. In order, it's not really disconnected vignettes. Love It!

Marcellus walking down the street and seeing Butch in the car is a direct homage to the movie Psycho by Hitchcock which has the exact same scene with the character played by Janet Leigh and her boss while she tries to skip town without him knowing it.

I believe Marcellus was on lookout for Butch with Vincent as a fill in for the unexpected loss of Jules. He probably stepped out to get the two of them breakfast at a shop not too far from Butch's home.
I've always thought that too, and am surprised nobody ever seems to connect those dots. That's why Marcelus was so close to Butch's apartment, and why he had what looked like donuts and coffee for two in his hands. Also explains why Vincent didn't react to hearing a person moving around in the apartment.....he assumed it was Marcelus returning from his food run.
Marcellus was at Butch's with Vincent and whent for coffee and donuts. Thats why Vinvcent didn't react when he heard the door open and him rumiging around the cabinets. He was expecting Marcelus to return with the cofee.

John Travolta was known for dancing in his early movies. Grease, Saturday Night Fever & Urban Cowboy which made being a cowpoke cool. John & Debra Winger had some great moves on the dance floor. Her riding the mechanical bull at Gilley's was iconic at the time. Being a Texan my 3 teenage nieces knew every word of dialouge in the movie haha

I watched this the 1st time when it came out on vcr tapes. As soon as it was over i rewound the tape & watched it again. I've seen it countless times since then. Enjoyed watching with you. Great reaction.
Gets better every time you watch it. I've seen it about 20 times now and still not bored of it. Once you know it it becomes a comedy because of all the dark humor in it.
Imagine being in high school watching this for the first time. I was 16 when this movie came out and I remember some of my classmates gushing over this movie, so I ended up going to see it at the movie's and it was one of those movies that made me realize this was one of those movies that would totally appeal to edgy teenager's. Wasn't until I watched it again at 21, when I had gone through some shit in my personal life, physically and psychologically, that I appreciated the series of interlocking stories being told, this was so good, I was surprised I didn't pay it any mind back when I was 16, I definitely enjoyed it more as an adult, and still revisit this one up to today
Butch was going to be in a boxing match. He couldn’t wear it in the ring. He couldn’t leave it in a locker at the arena because someone might steal it. That’s why he had to rely on his girlfriend to bring the watch. He reminded her to bring it. His dismay is very understandable.
Where i live is a primarily latino (Mexican) area, they put mayonnaise and chili pepper on the street corn. I refused to try for so long, now I love it on grilled corn.
Each act is a stereotype of a pulp fiction novel. I saw this originally in the theater and I had the same ? Immediately afterwards but thought about it for weeks afterwards and remember every scene decades later. I think it requires time to digest and think to really come to appreciate it. "No Country For Old Men" is the only film that has had a similar effect on me.
All the dance moves they did in the film were from actual dances from the time period of the song. They were actual dances with choreographed moves. Also yes you can snort heroin but you can't snort it in the amount Mia did. She assumed it was cocaine because of how it was packaged. She did an amount no heroin user would snort at one setting.

You need to see Resevoir Dogs, cause Vincent Vega's brother is in it, Vic Vega/Mr. Blonde (played by Michael Madsen, who also was the original choice for the role of Vincent but he had to turn it down cause he was busy doing another movie which was Wyatt Earp). Daniel Day-Lewis was also considered as Vincent and even auditioned, and Bruce Willis originally wanted to play Vincent, but Tarantino already promised that role to John Travolta, but he also accepted the role of Butch (which was originally considered for Mickey Rourke, who turned it down, and in a previous draft of the script Butch was originally an up and coming boxer instead of a has-been never made to the top boxer, and Matt Dillon was considered for the up and coming-version of Butch).
This was a movie I came out of the theater a little confused because of the alternating time line but knew it was brilliant and was very entertaining. Watched again a week later and it all fell into place. Have to say this is probably the movie I have seen more times than any other in my lifetime.

What's in the briefcase is essentially what Hitchcock called a Macguffin, a device used to further the plot and nothing more. It's not really important what it actually is, only that everyone wants it. The Maltese Falcon served the same purpose in that movie. That being said there are theories that it was Marcellus Wallace's soul that he sold for being a successful criminal. The 666 combo. The eerie glow and the band aid on the back of his neck in the movie (where the soul is said to be extracted from) are all clues.
I shook Quintin's hand in line at the 'Bucks in 2003. "Best f..king movie ever!" I exclaimed and he said "thanks, man!". I was referring to Kill Bill Part 1 which had been out for 7 weeks.

Legend has it the soul is removed from the body by a needle at the back of the neck. I guess a soul is valuable so what is in the case is Marsellus' soul. [Notice the band aid on the back of his neck when first introduced] Officially it's a McGuffin though. The movie is actually shot in order showing 4 days in a row [with the watch delivery to Butch being a simple flash-back] The last line of the four days is "Zed's dead". Then the second half of the first day is shown to bring us back to the beginning of all that followed on those next three days. It is largely about redemption, second chances and character. I like that the movie went into what the world of hit men and high crime people must be like for those in it. The two that got out of that world are Butch and Jules. [Butch earned his way out, and Jules also did by letting those two go in the restaurant and his "moment of clarity"] Both showed worthy character. Yes, Tarantino was the low point for the movie as far as acting goes, but like you say it's tolerated since he is so good as a director. This movie didn't jump all over. Just the first day was shown in two parts. First in order as the first of the four days then as a flashback to the second half of the first day. Back yards there all have walls around them for privacy. The Wolf was definitely cool. He was the perfect "cleaner". He fixes problems. Good movie.
hey Shree. I hope you notice that every time Vincent has gone to the bathroom (3 times), something bad happens. Plus he was reading the same book in all the instances. The reason he was always in the bathroom, was from the fact that Vincent gave up Heroin after the Mia overdose incident. Heroin makes you constipated. Once Vincent gave it up, he had to go to the bathroom all the time. Also, as a side note, withdrawal from heroin can make your body muscles (aka the finger on the trigger) unexpectedly contract or twitch.
the exception being when he was reading in the bathroom at the end. That was just a long, constipated poo. It was prior to his "date" with Mia, in the timeline.
Great reaction to a great movie. A popular (but unconfirmed) theory about the briefcase is that it contains a halo that Marcellus needs to buy his soul back from the Devil. This is why he has a Band-Aid on the back of his neck; that's from where his soul was extracted. The combination on the case also helps this theory, but like I said, it's unconfirmed.
I love that we never see the contents of the briefcase. I also think it’s more fun to hear all the “crazy” theories of what’s in there. -The Soul of Marcellus Wallace -The Diamonds from the Heist in Reservoir Dogs -The Oscar/Award Tarantino should’ve won for this movie -A gold jumpsuit once worn by Elvis. Tarantino didn’t do a bad job of acting. He’s pissed off that they came to him and put his marriage at risk. I don’t know about you but I don’t think I would be happy about that situation either. His dialogue is probably my favourite thing about his movies.
Another “subtle” touch that I like in this movie is the scene where Butch/Bruce is picking a weapon in the pawnshop. Everything he picks up and considers at first is not MEANT to be a weapon, they can double up and be a weapon in a pinch but the sword he picks is the only thing that was meant to be a weapon.

Shree, One of the the main themes of the movie is redemption. All of the characters get a second chance after a somewhat selfless act. Vincent chooses not to sleep with Mia and saves her life after she OD's. Butch is allowed to leave LA alive after saving Marcellus. And Jules helps Honey Bunny and Yolanda after the "act of God." He reads the tea leaves and leaves the gangster life. Vincent doesn't, and he pays with his life after running into Butch whom he previously, and needlessly insulted.

His first film was shot mostly Gonzo style and still my favorite. Reservoir Dogs! His first non directed movie but scripted was True Romance! Now that's star stuffed and loaded with twists! It's Quentin's imaginary life as a film, when he was a video store clerk! I think this is an homage to a very old Kubrick film, The Killing.
The reason Tarantino can't tell a story in order is because he was inspired/influenced by Stanley Kubrick's 1956 heist movie "The Killing." Tarantino's first movie "Reservoir Dogs" is a more direct homage. "Dogs" lifts it's plot and a even a lot of identical scenes and shots from A Hong Kong movie called "City on Fire" (1987 dir Ringo Lam) but the story is told in the style of "The Killing"
There must be versions of this film where the whole scene of Vincent and Mia conversing before going out are cut because it appears to just jump to Vincent and Mia arriving at the restaurant right after the foot scene.
There are deleted scenes, one of them is where Mia comes down with a camera, filming Vincent and "interviewing him" asking questions such as "Beatles or Elvis Presley?" In the resturant scene there's a deleted conversation about a place in Amsterdam where Vincent lived & what he did there.
They have all kinds of theories about what's in the actual brief case & it ranges anywhere from Marcellus actual soul being in the briefcase... all the way to it being gold Nazi bullion from Fort Knox , there's a lot of crazy theories out there about it but the only one that makes perfect sense is it being the diamonds /whatever jewelry they actually stole Tarantino's first film *Reservoir Dogs* simply because of the fact that he made a "Tarantino" universe & Vincent Vega is actually the brother of Victor Vega , the serial killer/robber from *Reservoir Dogs* that helped steal the diamonds during the heist in that film (QT wrote a script for a story called *The Vega Bros.* but both John Travolta & Michael Madson are too old to play as those characters in a prequel about them obviously but it could have been done if he wouldn't of made all the other films he chose to make after *Pulp Fiction* which were all the movies that got him really famous & familiar to everyone such as *Kill Bill* & *Inglorious Bastards* !!! I honestly think he could have made those films later so he could have done *The Vega Bros* instead while the two actors were still fairly young but hopefully we will get atleast a comic book version or novel of it❤️

Everyone is surprised when Vincent gets killed, but he was in Butch's storyline when he got shot. An amazing way to flip the perspective of multiple seemingly unrelated storylines throughout a movie. Using the subtext of one storyline to drive the plot of another storyline.

This isn't exactly a new technique however. Akira Kurosawa first used it in his 1950 masterpiece Rashomon, telling the story of a rape/murder of a bride and her samurai husband from 4 different perspectives with overlapping timelines. The American film maker Robert Altman used similar techniques in his 1970's masterpieces Nashville and McCabe and Mrs. Miller. Tarantino however did apply the technique to his post modernist film style making a different kind of movie to what mainstream audiences were used to. One thing that was different about the 1980s and 90s from today is that film was a lot more daring and unpredictable.
I used to think Marcelus walking on the street was a coincidence, but in hindsight, he was probably on the mission with Travolta substituting for the retired Jackson.
If you think of the scenes in order, it's a movie about a couple of hitmen who get sign after sign over the course of a day telling them to quit the life, Jules does, but Vincent doesn't. The very next day, a bizarre confluence of events leads to Vincent's death. In order, it's not really disconnected vignettes. Love It!

Marcellus walking down the street and seeing Butch in the car is a direct homage to the movie Psycho by Hitchcock which has the exact same scene with the character played by Janet Leigh and her boss while she tries to skip town without him knowing it.

Actually, i didn't read it or got confirmation but knowing that tarantino is a movie buff who likes to reference other films in his movies (in kill bill for example there are clear references to the movies Lady Snowblood and Thriller: a cruel picture) and given that the scene is exactly the same as in psycho, i have no doubt he was inspired by it.
I believe Marcellus was on lookout for Butch with Vincent as a fill in for the unexpected loss of Jules. He probably stepped out to get the two of them breakfast at a shop not too far from Butch's home.
I've always thought that too, and am surprised nobody ever seems to connect those dots. That's why Marcelus was so close to Butch's apartment, and why he had what looked like donuts and coffee for two in his hands. Also explains why Vincent didn't react to hearing a person moving around in the apartment.....he assumed it was Marcelus returning from his food run.
Marcellus was at Butch's with Vincent and whent for coffee and donuts. Thats why Vinvcent didn't react when he heard the door open and him rumiging around the cabinets. He was expecting Marcelus to return with the cofee.

John Travolta was known for dancing in his early movies. Grease, Saturday Night Fever & Urban Cowboy which made being a cowpoke cool. John & Debra Winger had some great moves on the dance floor. Her riding the mechanical bull at Gilley's was iconic at the time. Being a Texan my 3 teenage nieces knew every word of dialouge in the movie haha

Gets better every time you watch it. I've seen it about 20 times now and still not bored of it. Once you know it it becomes a comedy because of all the dark humor in it.
Imagine being in high school watching this for the first time. I was 16 when this movie came out and I remember some of my classmates gushing over this movie, so I ended up going to see it at the movie's and it was one of those movies that made me realize this was one of those movies that would totally appeal to edgy teenager's. Wasn't until I watched it again at 21, when I had gone through some shit in my personal life, physically and psychologically, that I appreciated the series of interlocking stories being told, this was so good, I was surprised I didn't pay it any mind back when I was 16, I definitely enjoyed it more as an adult, and still revisit this one up to today

Butch was going to be in a boxing match. He couldn’t wear it in the ring. He couldn’t leave it in a locker at the arena because someone might steal it. That’s why he had to rely on his girlfriend to bring the watch. He reminded her to bring it. His dismay is very understandable.
Where i live is a primarily latino (Mexican) area, they put mayonnaise and chili pepper on the street corn. I refused to try for so long, now I love it on grilled corn.

Each act is a stereotype of a pulp fiction novel.
I saw this originally in the theater and I had the same ? Immediately afterwards but thought about it for weeks afterwards and remember every scene decades later. I think it requires time to digest and think to really come to appreciate it.
"No Country For Old Men" is the only film that has had a similar effect on me.
All the dance moves they did in the film were from actual dances from the time period of the song. They were actual dances with choreographed moves. Also yes you can snort heroin but you can't snort it in the amount Mia did. She assumed it was cocaine because of how it was packaged. She did an amount no heroin user would snort at one setting.
I have never laughed harder in the theater, than I did in 94' watching this for the first time.
Steve Buscemi as the Buddy Holly dressed waiter. You need to see Resevoir Dogs, cause Vincent Vega's brother is in it, Vic Vega/Mr. Blonde (played by Michael Madsen, who also was the original choice for the role of Vincent but he had to turn it down cause he was busy doing another movie which was Wyatt Earp). Daniel Day-Lewis was also considered as Vincent and even auditioned, and Bruce Willis originally wanted to play Vincent, but Tarantino already promised that role to John Travolta, but he also accepted the role of Butch (which was originally considered for Mickey Rourke, who turned it down, and in a previous draft of the script Butch was originally an up and coming boxer instead of a has-been never made to the top boxer, and Matt Dillon was considered for the up and coming-version of Butch).
The actors name you were thinking of is Steve Buscemi and he had also starred in Tarantino's film Reservoir Dogs as well.
This was a movie I came out of the theater a little confused because of the alternating time line but knew it was brilliant and was very entertaining. Watched again a week later and it all fell into place. Have to say this is probably the movie I have seen more times than any other in my lifetime.

The Christopher Walken ass watch monologue is one of the best things ever filmed.
What's in the briefcase is essentially what Hitchcock called a Macguffin, a device used to further the plot and nothing more. It's not really important what it actually is, only that everyone wants it. The Maltese Falcon served the same purpose in that movie. That being said there are theories that it was Marcellus Wallace's soul that he sold for being a successful criminal. The 666 combo. The eerie glow and the band aid on the back of his neck in the movie (where the soul is said to be extracted from) are all clues.
I shook Quintin's hand in line at the 'Bucks in 2003. "Best f..king movie ever!" I exclaimed and he said "thanks, man!". I was referring to Kill Bill Part 1 which had been out for 7 weeks.
Fun fact, the Ezekiel speech was originally meant to be in, From Dusk Till Dawn......Harvey Keitel's character was meant to say it, they used, The Lords Prayer instead
Pulp fiction. Is around one of the best movies of all time. 👍 my absolute favorite.
Legend has it the soul is removed from the body by a needle at the back of the neck. I guess a soul is valuable so what is in the case is Marsellus' soul. [Notice the band aid on the back of his neck when first introduced] Officially it's a McGuffin though. The movie is actually shot in order showing 4 days in a row [with the watch delivery to Butch being a simple flash-back] The last line of the four days is "Zed's dead". Then the second half of the first day is shown to bring us back to the beginning of all that followed on those next three days. It is largely about redemption, second chances and character. I like that the movie went into what the world of hit men and high crime people must be like for those in it. The two that got out of that world are Butch and Jules. [Butch earned his way out, and Jules also did by letting those two go in the restaurant and his "moment of clarity"] Both showed worthy character. Yes, Tarantino was the low point for the movie as far as acting goes, but like you say it's tolerated since he is so good as a director. This movie didn't jump all over. Just the first day was shown in two parts. First in order as the first of the four days then as a flashback to the second half of the first day. Back yards there all have walls around them for privacy. The Wolf was definitely cool. He was the perfect "cleaner". He fixes problems. Good movie.
hey Shree. I hope you notice that every time Vincent has gone to the bathroom (3 times), something bad happens.
Plus he was reading the same book in all the instances. The reason he was always in the bathroom, was from the fact that Vincent gave up Heroin after the Mia overdose incident. Heroin makes you constipated. Once Vincent gave it up, he had to go to the bathroom all the time. Also, as a side note, withdrawal from heroin can make your body muscles (aka the finger on the trigger) unexpectedly contract or twitch.

A popular (but unconfirmed) theory about the briefcase is that it contains a halo that Marcellus needs to buy his soul back from the Devil. This is why he has a Band-Aid on the back of his neck; that's from where his soul was extracted. The combination on the case also helps this theory, but like I said, it's unconfirmed.

Tarantino didn’t do a bad job of acting. He’s pissed off that they came to him and put his marriage at risk. I don’t know about you but I don’t think I would be happy about that situation either. His dialogue is probably my favourite thing about his movies.
Another “subtle” touch that I like in this movie is the scene where Butch/Bruce is picking a weapon in the pawnshop. Everything he picks up and considers at first is not MEANT to be a weapon, they can double up and be a weapon in a pinch but the sword he picks is the only thing that was meant to be a weapon.

Shree, One of the the main themes of the movie is redemption. All of the characters get a second chance after a somewhat selfless act. Vincent chooses not to sleep with Mia and saves her life after she OD's. Butch is allowed to leave LA alive after saving Marcellus. And Jules helps Honey Bunny and Yolanda after the "act of God." He reads the tea leaves and leaves the gangster life. Vincent doesn't, and he pays with his life after running into Butch whom he previously, and needlessly insulted.
The glowing suitcase is a reference to a fantastic 1955 film noir called Kiss Me Deadly. Worth checking out.

His first film was shot mostly Gonzo style and still my favorite. Reservoir Dogs! His first non directed movie but scripted was True Romance! Now that's star stuffed and loaded with twists! It's Quentin's imaginary life as a film, when he was a video store clerk! I think this is an homage to a very old Kubrick film, The Killing.
The reason Tarantino can't tell a story in order is because he was inspired/influenced by Stanley Kubrick's 1956 heist movie "The Killing." Tarantino's first movie "Reservoir Dogs" is a more direct homage. "Dogs" lifts it's plot and a even a lot of identical scenes and shots from A Hong Kong movie called "City on Fire" (1987 dir Ringo Lam) but the story is told in the style of "The Killing"

There must be versions of this film where the whole scene of Vincent and Mia conversing before going out are cut because it appears to just jump to Vincent and Mia arriving at the restaurant right after the foot scene.
There are deleted scenes, one of them is where Mia comes down with a camera, filming Vincent and "interviewing him" asking questions such as "Beatles or Elvis Presley?" In the resturant scene there's a deleted conversation about a place in Amsterdam where Vincent lived & what he did there.

They have all kinds of theories about what's in the actual brief case & it ranges anywhere from Marcellus actual soul being in the briefcase... all the way to it being gold Nazi bullion from Fort Knox , there's a lot of crazy theories out there about it but the only one that makes perfect sense is it being the diamonds /whatever jewelry they actually stole Tarantino's first film *Reservoir Dogs* simply because of the fact that he made a "Tarantino" universe & Vincent Vega is actually the brother of Victor Vega , the serial killer/robber from *Reservoir Dogs* that helped steal the diamonds during the heist in that film (QT wrote a script for a story called *The Vega Bros.* but both John Travolta & Michael Madson are too old to play as those characters in a prequel about them obviously but it could have been done if he wouldn't of made all the other films he chose to make after *Pulp Fiction* which were all the movies that got him really famous & familiar to everyone such as *Kill Bill* & *Inglorious Bastards* !!! I honestly think he could have made those films later so he could have done *The Vega Bros* instead while the two actors were still fairly young but hopefully we will get atleast a comic book version or novel of it❤️
