Then one day I try this out when I already had notes on a pattern and I couldn't figure out why they would disappear everytime I was in the recording setup screen. Then it dawned on me I could put new trig's down when in that screen. This was only a few years ago and I felt dumb.
Just bought my first OT a week or so ago followed by my first DT. It would be cool if page play were randomized and condition based too. I was not too impressed. The longer countdown with pattern changes is good but no countdown at all would be better. The LED dimming has only 3 settings: unusable dark, sort of medium, too bright, but the screen gets darker, too, when dimming LEDs. The randomize is nice but is not available for trigs, only menu pages. What really would have been great: more gain for the quiet inputs, transpose sample tracks, live transpose, active steps (like korg), automatic slice with thresholds like maschine, reverb also for FX1, optional send FX (at least to the master track) etc...
not to mention, i'd personally like to see a few more timestretch algorithms such as a paulstretch, something similar to ableton's complex pro, or perhaps even a granular engine... and perhaps an extra reverb effect or two... octatrack with a granular engine would be truly insane. also polyphony!!!
Perhaps there may be a few more smaller updates to fix a few things still to come but as for a new timestretch Algo like Paul’s I seriously doubt it but my god how utterly awesome would that make the Octa then!
The last option to record note length. Can you test if this works for melodic samples using the OT keys to record? I know this didn’t worked and it was one of the main reasons I sold it. For instance load up a bass note and record a bass line using the trigs. Does it now record the note off events like the Digitakt? Please tell me this works now properly :D I know there are workarounds like using an external keyboard, or a midi cable to loop the notes from midi tracks to audio tracks, but I don’t want workarounds :D
Hey Gaz, does the Octatrack still immediately cancel (cut off) the ‘currently playing’ sample the instant the next one begins to play? Or is there any sort of polyphonic sample playback in the new O.S.?
@@GazWilliams But is a HUGE mistake by Elektron. Every single sampler plays polyphonic its samples. It's such a pity an incredible machine like that to not be able to do that. Although we are still in love with OT ♥️
How did you connect USB powered Launchpad to OT? I have a USB keyboard and I am looking for something that would let me connect it to OT, preferably synced to OT’s clock.
It was powered by a USB socket but connected via a midi cable as it is a Launchpad Pro. If your keyboard doesn’t have midi sockets you can get a USB host device like the ones made by Kenton or my fave by Retrokits the RK-006.
Sorry , but there’s one thing that’s apparent about the OT , it’s not very intuitive to use , it’s fiddly , the sub parameters are hard to get into , I’ve yet to see what the hype was/is about this machine ... congratulations on 10 years though 🤚🏻
@@leftmono1016 I’ve used MPC’s And early Roland work stations , I get it , but if the sub menus and general menus were a little more intuitive I think this could be better than most of the other Non DAW workhorse sequencers ,
The Octa is so unusual in its approach that it literally forces you to work with it in a way that is initially baffling. You have to dedicate quite a bit of effort to use it.
You say that like it's a simple mod. They would have to re-do the main PCB, redesign the case, update the whole manufacturing/assembly process. It's hardly trivial.
I find the screen does a fine job to be honest. As with all Elektron devices, the screen is only part of the equation. You are really not meant to stare incessantly at it rather just quick glances normally suffice. The Akai MPC range I would say is more focused on the display.

For instance load up a bass note and record a bass line using the trigs. Does it now record the note off events like the Digitakt? Please tell me this works now properly :D
I know there are workarounds like using an external keyboard, or a midi cable to loop the notes from midi tracks to audio tracks, but I don’t want workarounds :D
Hey Alex, I should have covered that a bit better in the vid sorry!
Hey Gaz, does the Octatrack still immediately cancel (cut off) the ‘currently playing’ sample the instant the next one begins to play? Or is there any sort of polyphonic sample playback in the new O.S.?
This whole video was just me going AAAWWW DUUUUDE FINALLYYYY OMG DUUUDE FINA FUCKING LY!
So for the most part they have brought the Octatrack into line with the other grey boxes and the digi boxes in many respects.
Yep I think so.
I need to update mine!
Are those speakers in the back iLouds?
Hm, might not sell it quite yet.
Massive update🤘Still doesn't play the samples polyphonic though.
That would super cool I just don’t think it’s got the cpu juice for that sadly.
@@GazWilliams But is a HUGE mistake by Elektron. Every single sampler plays polyphonic its samples. It's such a pity an incredible machine like that to not be able to do that. Although we are still in love with OT ♥️
Can also the length of a sample trig be recorded now so that you do not have to manually lock it?
wowwwwww !!! thanks u the man
This update is proof that Elektron got new software developer for OT & that device will progress again in the future. Fingers crossed for Mk3.
@@GazWilliams Thank you for replying. I’ll check them out.
what a game changer
need to get the update. Can I loose my tracks doing a update??
Definitely back up first
Time to dust off that old launchpad pro 😀
did u hook the launchpad directly to the OT or did you use a computer as a middleman?
It’s a standalone Launchpad Pro which has midi outputs. No computer needed!
@@GazWilliams very cool, very cool indeed 😎 been looking at grid controllers lately and standalone functionality is a must.
Gaz do you have any sample packs available?
Funny you should ask. Working on some right now. Keep tuned...
I had to sell mine a couple months ago, damn :(
Aww bad timing!
Nicevideo
The best thing Elektron could have released is a pill you can take to fully understand how to use it. Yes the stop button was yellow.
Ah thanks for the confirmation about the yellow button. I wasn’t sure if I had dreamt that!
@@GazWilliams in the year 2020 if your dreams are about gear, I salute you my good man!
MOUTH NOISES ... sry you were saying about the Octatrack?
Whoops I’ll look in to that
Have they fixed the problem with the oktatrack crashing and freezing some times?
Seems stable here. I haven’t had a single crash. Anyone else had it crash?
Sorry , but there’s one thing that’s apparent about the OT , it’s not very intuitive to use , it’s fiddly , the sub parameters are hard to get into , I’ve yet to see what the hype was/is about this machine ... congratulations on 10 years though 🤚🏻
g9000 - you're correct on all points. People love it because it's uniquely creative.
They could only have enlarged the screen a little more
You say that like it's a simple mod. They would have to re-do the main PCB, redesign the case, update the whole manufacturing/assembly process. It's hardly trivial.
@@RichardOlpin Yes, truth is not so simple but Akai did it with Mpc X and it was just wonderful
@@RichardOlpin AKAi (NUmark) whatever
I find the screen does a fine job to be honest. As with all Elektron devices, the screen is only part of the equation. You are really not meant to stare incessantly at it rather just quick glances normally suffice. The Akai MPC range I would say is more focused on the display.
