    Fished there and typically had the best luck with chartreuse stick baits that dive about 10-20 feet. I remember last time I was there I used a 10 foot diver and thought I wouldn't do to well and thought I'd try and see. It ended up being the best lure we used out there and it only went down 10 feet... Weird when you're thinking Lakers, but it was early like this was. Once we went out with a half dozen or so of us. My buddy and I paddled off to troll and fish. A huge storm came. The wind was dreadful and the waves huge. We paddled quickly and nervously to shore. Then we sat under a leaned over tree where the lake Y's for about 2 hours getting poured on and hailed on. Another time I went with my brother and his kids and we were trying to leave the lake and kept running full campsites as we were leaving. Finally I told my brother a storm is coming we need to just ask someone to share their spot. We asked and he said yes. The winds picked up and the rains came down. I was setting up 2 tents in a torrential down pour. Not fun, not fun at all. We got set up and the bottoms of the tents got a bit wet, but in the end we got it done and everyone got in their tents and slept the night. On the lake a different time I was drifting a crawler for walleye and once in a while a whitefish would pick it up. I hooked up and was reeling in a fish and it was coming good, then it just stopped and I was like I think its stuck in some weeds. I just kept pulling and boom I was like I got it unstuck and reeled in about 10 more feet and was like dang it's stuck again. The wind was blowing and my ultralight was buckled over. Then I pulled it free and looked down and I had a whitefish with it's guts hanging out and laying on it side half dead and right below it next to the canoe was a 40-45 inch pike. That was pretty cool. Also we had the depth finders going once and I was jigging a buck tail in open water 75 feet down bouncing it off the bottom and picked up an 8-10 pound pike off the bottom. Never thought I'd get a pike from that deep out in the middle not by any cover, must have been out chasing some ciscoes. It's a cool lake with some nice fish. Water is clean and clear and if you watch on a calm sunny day and paddle slowly you can pick out fish sometimes swimming under and around you. I've seen pike, whitefish, and Lakers swimming under me before. I've also had moose walk out. It is a huge lake and the wind can pick up quick and get scary fast, but overall it is an amazing place. Sorry for the book...Just brought back lots of memories....
    Oh yeah I forgot to mention this was also the same like I was fishing with a buddy for walleyes in a bay and another canoe in our group paddles up with the guy in the back paddling and my buddy in the front asking if I had a pliers bent over. They pulled up and my buddy had a daredevil treble hook buried into the fat of his thumb and the pike was wedged between his thumb and the hook and he had to paddle 10 minutes to me for the pliers. It was so tight I couldn't get the pliers in and then he had to man it up and just started smashing and forcing the already tight hook with virtually no room too move through his thumb so it came back out. Then I cut the barb off and the metal slid out and he put the pike back in the water. At came they squeezed Neosporin in till it came out the other end. Then we stayed the remainder of the week, so it can be a bit dangerous, nut it is fun...

      Great memories! Deep diving rapalas are another go-to lure for trout. It sounds like you've had a lot more experience on Knife than I have. I love hearing about massive pike stories in the BWCA. My personal best is a 40 incher that I caught trolling a muskie lure in the fall on Basswood Lake. Thought I hooked the bottom of the lake. I couldn't lift him in the canoe so we landed him from shore.

      @@courtneyknitter4358I live up in Alaska now. On occasion we drive into the yukon and I fish a few lakes there with some big pike. We usually get at least one over 40 every trip. Best we got was a 45". All my girls have caught 40 inchers and my son has a 32 inch Laker from the Yukon territory. Oh Yeah Doroty Molter was the last person to live in the BWCA. She had a cabin on one of the islands. I think one of the lakers you caught while paddling out was right next to the island she had her house on toward the west end of the lake. She was called the root beer lady. My buddy brought me out there and showed me where her house use to sit. He visited her a few times when he was young when his dad and him paddled out. Oh well good times.... Here is the link to the root beer lady if anyone is interested...

    This is great, fished this lake for trout three years ago late in the season and they were DEEP. Wondering what your favorite way to cook them is? I am always looking for new trout recipes!

      I like to filet them and fry them in shorelunch just like walleye.

    Man, is that fun to watch? I've caught quite a few lake trout in the BWCA and Quetico, but I've never measured any. I've made guesses, though. For a bit of reference, did you estimate these fishes' lengths, or did you put them on a ruler? Just curious, because I'd like a better idea of how long mine were, and these are about the same length, give or take. Thanks!

    • @benk9105
      @benk9105  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Carl, I didn't have a ruler so these were rough estimates.

    Question about the 1oz sinker you're using. Are you using a swivel that connects to the leader to keep the sinker from dropping down to the spoon?

    • @benk9105
      @benk9105  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's correct. A barrel swivel stops the egg sinker from sliding up to the lure.

    Was that electronics you were using on the canoe??? I’ve been to Bass Pro and Cabbalas and neither place says they have anything that can be used in a canoe? Sure hope you see this, I could sure use the advise 👍

      Scott! Scroll down in the comments and read my conversation with
      Anthony Cerniglia about my electronics. I bring my Humminbird Helix 5 every trip! The magnetic tranducer mount is from fishfindermounts.com. I power it with a 12 volt battery and carry it in a portable ice fishing flasher case.

      I’m flying in on a float plane though, a 12 volt battery would be too heavy I’m afraid is the problem. I will scroll down though and take a look. Thank you for the quick response!

    How did you bring a fish finder up there

    • @benk9105
      @benk9105  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use a hummingbird helix 5. You can buy a magnetic clamp to mount the transducer to the side of the canoe. I carry it in an ice fishing case with a battery. It is really helpful for finding the structure, marking fish depths, and seeing baitfish. I wouldn't fish without it.

    • @benk9105
      @benk9105  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @eric duffy I have the Helix 5 with DI and GPS. I've never actually timed it to see how long it can go on a single charge, but definitely longer than 5 hours. I would guess close to 15 hours because I used it for several hours everyday on our 4 day trip. I'd recommend turning the screen brightness down as low as you can stand it to conserve battery. I bet you could look up the specifications of each of the Helix units on the Humminbird website to see the differences in battery draw down. Good luck!

      @eric duffy I have a Helix 5 that I use for ice fishing and summer fishing. It is the SI model. But I use Lithium ion batteries in the 18650 format. I bring it to Quetico with 8 spare batteries which gets me through the week. The batteries are small and very light. It's a great way to go for longer trips with a number of portages.

      Ben K - Nice man, thanks for sharing! We use the same outfitter every year too. We always catch enough to eat and then some. Last year we tried bait casters with lead line and did real well. We always go to the same lake but we go the second week of June. Seeing this footage makes me so excited, it's my one little bit of sanity I get every year, peace!
