Awesome video, nailed the intimidation factor of fishing deep water for Lakers. I’m feeling more confident about it after watching this short video. Thank you!

I live in sunset country and never really attemped to catch lakers in summer. But yes basically what you are doing is searching dor lakers then vertical jigging as if you are ice fishing.

Thank you for the tips! Going to the bwca in 2 weeks and going to be targeting lake trout on day 2! Super happy I have plenty of buck tails and Rapalas for ice fishing!

I have an HDS 7 gen 3 Lowrance and a total scan transducer. I fish up in Grand Lake Stream Maine, West Grand Lake. Not sure if it's my gear but my sonar isn't reading deeper depths below 70 feet. I've taken it off auto and set it for 150 feet, bottom lock etc but I guess my problem is finding them, not catching them. Found some signals at 40-50 feet but not sure if that's Lake Trout or Smallmouth Bass. I didn't think smallies went that deep in August.

So how do you find success when their suspended at 80-120 in 200 feet of water?

Same as what he's doing in the video, lake trout can be super aggressive one day then not bite anything for a day or 2. For those days when they are hitting all you have to do is get something white within 50 feet of them and play keep away . 😆
If trolling I found that keeping a lure 20 or 30 feet above them works best. Trying to get a bait at thier depth doesn't seem to work nearly as well as staying way above them. They use there deep depths to hide from the prey above them.
Seen it many times over the years, Mark a fish at 50 feet , drop a heavy jig with a white grub tail down over thier head and the fish come raising up to eat it before the jig is even 20 ft down. But that's on days they are super aggressive. The next day you might have to get it in thier face to have them just pick at it. Weather doesn't seem to make a difference with lake trout. Just find them on the depth finder and drop it down, if they don't take it in 30 seconds or less move on and find some more or fish for something else until the next day or 2 when they get aggressive again. On those days I have seen them hit things as silly as a marshmallow. As you see in the video Jim is having one of those days. 👍
