Solo Bushcraft Camp using Traditional Gear: Canvas Lavvu, Wool Blanket, Sheepskin Bed

  • I head out alone on a solo bushcraft trip. Carrying my gear in a waxed canvas backpack, sleeping on sheepskin with a wool blanket inside a canvas lavvu tent. I start a fire using a traditional hbc firelighting tin, flint and steel and the inner bark of the cedar tree that I keep in my leather tinder pouch. I grill meat over the fire and enjoy time camping alone a the dark forest. Thanks for watching!

    A pocket bellows is a wonderful piece of kit for keeping one's face out of the smoke and for preventing a singed beard when starting a camp fire.

    • @jamesellsworth9673
      @jamesellsworth9673 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Zack Darce Hey, Zack. You and others would be right about using MOST pocket bellows...but Mike is right about this one because of the brass end section and the way in which the brass protects the steel from overheating through rapid conduction and dispersal of heat at the tip.

    • @jamesellsworth9673
      @jamesellsworth9673 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Zack Darce Thinking outside the box, I use mine both ways, depending on whether I want to concentrate air on a single coal or on a wider area in a fire that is already started.

    Hey Mike, I think you had the pocket bellows the wrong way round. The narrowest part of the tube should be towards the fire. This way it accelerates and concentrates the airflow. The pocket bellows are part of my essential gear and featured on my channel a lot here in Canada! A total must for Winter camping 🇨🇦 Best wishes Michael & Esme 🐶

    I was given a box full of surplus poncho halves back in the '80s, I used them in pairs to make a teepee for camping, singles as a wind break and even as a sleeping bag on a trip through France, wish I still had some.
    For blow starting fires, I use a freebie selfie stick I have dismantled.
    An alternative to your blanket roll is to have a look at the how to items for cowboy bed rolls.

    The extendable tube is much more effective if you blow from the wider side imo. This way the air gets compressed and concentrated. Works like a frikin' furnace. As always great video mate :)

    Great video. I love the fire blowers. I bought them in a place they call them bellows. What a great piece of gear for any fire kit. Specially in wet weather. Help to get the fire going. I forgot to said. Added a 3 feet of plastic hose to the big end. Now don't have to put my face close to the fire.

    Oh, look at you! Two or three strikes and you got the fire started! You made that look soooo easy! But I've seen other bushcrafters, with more experience than you, really struggle with the flint and steel... so job well done.

    A suggestion for your blow tube: Put the larger end to your mouth so the tube gets smaller to the fire. This should increase the velocity of the air at the smaller end. Kind of like increasing water pressure with larger tubes into smaller tubes which increases the velocity and pressure of the water at the exit end.

    • @patmancrowley8509
      @patmancrowley8509 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, at minute 22 you're talking about the proper use of the tube and you're speaking about what I just said. Imagine that!
