I agree 100% with Pete about the lack of Industrial Arts at most High Schools today. I learned wood working, metal working and auto repair skills I use to this day in those classes. My old High School eliminated all those shop spaces almost 30 plus years ago...sad.

I agree ,I remember when we moved into the new middle school in 75,looking at the shop facilities, foundry, lathe, welding equipment ect ,sadly it sat unused other than the shop teacher's pet projects ,no time in the schedule, and only one unmotivated teacher

I was lucky to have a school with a full woodwork and metal work shop with equipment that got used often by students and a very enthusiastic teacher that got people excited to do some building or lathe work.

That’s how I got started working in sheet metal. I found someone who was willing to take on someone with no skill. I spent 5 years there before I returned to Oregon. Those skills a ethics took me into many other industries plastics, circuit boards, and I’m work for a custom and production optical company. In all cases they saw the skills I had and felt I could learn the process. Well Done!

What a compelling interview and look at a bronze master craftsman. Reminds me of the time I spent as a young letterpress printer, typesetter and foundry apprentice. A teacher with patience is too often taken for granted. Thank you.

The Western Flyer project stretches out into so many other stories and people. I think that if you traced all the the threads that come together in the fabric of the boat you would see that we are all truly connected and part of something so much greater than our selves. That is a wonderful way to feel about this life and that is what I love about this project: It helps connect all of us and helps us see that we are part of something immense and immensely beautiful. Thanks again for sharing! :-)

Hi Chris . Another fascinating side of how the Western Flyer is built . Didn't even give this a thought . What a lovely man Pete is , and you get the impression his father was a great guy and family came first. I really enjoyed watching this but would hate to guess how much the port holes cost . Thanks Chris . Watching the Western from day one has been educational and more importantly , proves that traditional skills can never be replaced . Above all , the skilled artisans are one tight family who respect one another .....a rare thing in the modern cut throat world .

Thank you Pete guys like you make the world go around. I think the biggest mistake we did was take vocation out of schools. Everyone said the kids have to go to college well they don’t. A lot of people are good with their hands. I’m in the trucking industry and no young people want to drive. We are running out of truckers same as the trade’s. It’s really sad.

Coming from a foundry that manufactured fire hydrants i worked in Iron and 3 types of brass and bronze.
A foundry is a foundry. Being babysat every Saturday till I was 18 there was little doubt what my career would end up being. But you always have to leave n experience the onlooker things offered, the service and rebellion ndecide to do what you know and eventually love your live God gave us to choose from which to live, happliy.

Hi Chris, I just came from your new video (short stories)…. It has the comments disabled. I felt compelled to say something, mainly… thanks. This is a wonderful way to bring the history and culture of ships, shipwrights and sailors to life… I watch with the same enthusiasm, as I listen to “Rollin of the Sea” or “Son of a Sailor”. It may be that gene that makes people knock on the hull of a boat, since I was born and raised on the prairies but feel a pull to the ocean… and eventually found my way to the Island. Keep up the good work.

I can see Pete’s thoughts and focus are dialed into how he separates himself from the business and putting it into safe hands, I don’t think he is in a dead hurry but focused on when the time is right. Some business owners wait till they can’t hear the jackhammer pounding next door or they are hooked up to a monitor at the hospital. This craft needs to be carried forward and he’s the guy to do it right. Great video !

I love hearing about how our high schools are lacking in industrial arts today. I went through a vocational school half of my school day. Made high school tolerable to me. I spent 17 years as an aircraft mechanic with American Airlines later in my life after the USAF. We need to bring back industrial arts in America. Not everyone can go to college an then be burdened with high educational debt the rest of their lives.

In today’s CNC machining climate, most things can be made without casting, but rather cut from billet. I do very much appreciate the traditional methods, but have to ask why these parts weren’t made completely by CNC. Particularly when taking into account that pretty much every surface was finish machined.

Before running, you have to learn how to walk, right ?
As a retired graphic designer, I can tell you that at school then college, we had to draw and paint type faces. Serif and sans-serif. Very precisely. We could'nt figure out why we had to do that painfully chore when, a new stuff called Lettraset was available with hundreds of fonts and sizes.
After 45 years in the design and advertising business and managing, I can tell you that the younger generation designers have no idea of type, fonts and their use in their design process. And it shows in today's consumer packaging, printed or web ads.Same with color management. "Why that shade of blue on that food packaging ?" Well, it looked good to me. Oh ! "What about your consumer ? " Duh.
A guy able to CNC who never did it the old way, will never FEEL his result. No emotion about his product.
I know, it sounds corny, but that's what this good man is teaching to youngsters.

I, as someone who has no right what so ever to input my opinion, vote for co-op. In a co-op, you can instill the apprentice philosophy, that has seemed to be a part of your great success, into the venture that lives on. A co-op can operate based on the values of the organization and for the benefit of all involved. Your current employees are all benefactors of the apprentice system and know its value and I would assume they would want to keep it going, so it can benefit future employees and the company alike. Whereas, a new owner might take a shortsighted view that it is a waste of resource and effort. Why hire people to cleanup for the other employees when you can add cleaning to the other employee's duties, missing the fact that the "industrial hygienists" are the future holders of the companies knowledge, traditions, and expertise. "we are more..."
