My Favorite of all songs. Takes me back every time I hear it. Curtis & The Halos (N.Y. Group) who had a Hit with (Nag) 🎶OH BABY YOUR A NAG. PERFECT MATCH.
Pretty Little Angel Eyes was the ultimate Stomp song for us yon teens in Philly growing up in the late fifties early sixties! R.I.P. Curtis Lee you will will be remembered!
So sorry to hear of the passing of your Dad, Curtis Lee, he will not be forgotten, by we fans who love his music, he had the talent to sing any style. RIP Curtis.
WHAT A GREAT VOICE , NO ONE CAN SOUND LIKE CURTIS LEE, ESPECIALLY UNDER THE MOON OF LOVE THE OUTTAKE ON MOON OF LOVE SO STUNNING AS HE GOES UP ONE KEY. WITH MUCH RESPECT, SINCERELY.....JOE ALBARINO
Great tribute Darren. I have been a big fan since the age of 14 in 1961 and have all Curtis's singles/45's. Plus; the Collectables CD / Best of Dunes CD / Dunes 12" LP, and countless Compilations and Spector LP's & CD's. His records sound as good today as they did 50+ years ago. Curtis was the best, RIP.
Nigel Roberts Hi Nigel, I have just read your comments, on Darren`s tribute to the great Curtis Lee. I am also a massive fan, to me he was number one. I was also 14 when I first heard " Pretty Little Angel Eyes" on Radio Luxembourg, like you I have his Collectables cd, plus vinyl, Best of Dunes etc. just missing Calif GL 903, which I hope to obtain soon Am I correct in assuming you are also from the UK ?( I am from Burnley, Lancashire UK ). Did you have a Curtis Lee request on Sound of the 60s in April ? I was at a doowop/60s concert in Long Island in April, and they did a touching memorial to all the 60s greats who had passed away in the last year, (too many), including Curtis, which was very moving . It was good to read that someone else, also rates Curtis Lee as highly as I do. Regards Arthur
...ANGEL EYES, UNDER THE MOON OF LOVE, BEVERLY JEAN, NO ONE COULD DUPLICATE CURTIS LEE. HE''S THE GREATEST. I MISS HIM. MY SINCERE RESPECTS. JOE ALBARINO
I will always cherish my childhood memories of us sitting at the piano and you singing to me, "Mop that Deck and Make it Shine, Pretty Little Angel Eyes, and Denise, Denise" and at the age of five you would place me on your shoulders and carry me around singing. I will miss observing your interaction first with your grand-kids, now with the great grand-kids the same way you played and sang with me when I was a youngster. Most of all, I enjoyed waking up very morning to the tunes you played on the piano singing "Georgia On My Mind" I am thankful I traveled to Boston to support you during your surgery. Very thankful. I will miss our family Holidays together. Thank you for memories that will forever be embedded in my heart. You finally got your wings Curt. You will always live in my heart. Thank you Darren for putting this video together. Love You & God Bless.
One of the best Doo-wop songs of all time bar none. Had it been recorded and released in the fifties it would have been a smash hit. I first heard this on a jukebox at my local coffee bar back in the day, and then managed to get a copy of the record sometime later. It still sounds fabulous today.Curtis could sure hit those high notes .
I just want you to know, your father may have sadly passed on. But he does live on. I personally have preformed at casinos, wineries, bars, cruises, etc, and these are the main songs that I love to do. Not only because I love the music, but EVERYONE loves it. Your father was an amazing artist, and a legend. He won't be forgotten, no matter what!
Great way to express your feelings about your dad. I was on summer vacation in '61 when this came out.Lake Tippecanoe in Indiana, and there was a ballroom on the lake. I was a goofy kid, but there was a dance going on that night, and I could hear "Pretty Little Angel Eyes" playing. My brother and I ran up toward the ballroom, but the song ended and something else started playing. I fell in love with that song...so much so that I started collecting records, and became a Curtis Lee fanatic. I think I have almost all of your dad's 45's, and have always believed that whatever type of song he was performing, it was always well done. It helped that he had help from Tommy Boyce and Phil Spector, but just sit back and play all the Curtis Lee A and B sides that I have...Great Music.
The bassist from the Platters introduced me to him many years ago, a few years later I ran in to him in a place I never expected him to be. I said" Curtis what are you doing here" He cam back quick, like the entertainer he was " I just flew in from Kansas City, My arms are tired, but my jaws are still flapping" Everybody in the place busted out laughing. I heard him sing some other styles and they were always great when sang them.
Very sweet retrospective. I'm sure he would be proud of it and you. Angel Eyes.... Wow. I have listened to that song for.... forever! I remember when it dropped. Great song. Your dad was a real talent. I am sorry for your loss.
Hi Darren, A very fine tribute to your dad, which I am so pleased you have shared with his fans on youtube. I have been a huge fan, since I first heard "Pretty Little Angel Eyes" and then "Under The Moon of Love", & " A Night at Daddy Gee`s" back in 1961/62 on a crackly radio in the UK.. I think it was wonderful that his last live performance was captured on video, I still wait in hope for someone to post one of his appearances on Bandstand. Curtis will always be number 1. RIP
Thank you Darren - what a wonderful tribute to your dad's muscial talent! However - I agree with earlier comment made - wish live performance at car show was audio of that actual performance and not record spliced in.
Gran e inolvidable ídolo de los 60 y que por su calidad interpretativa y voz pudo estar a la altura de un Paul Anka o Neil Sedaka pero el sistema no se lo permitió....no importa, siempre lo recordaremos.
I Was Worried That It Might Take Me Forever To Find Other Pictures Of Curtis Lee,Including Other Old Pictures Of Him From When He Was A Young Man,Besides The Old Picture From The Album Called Pretty Little Angel Eyes:A Golden Classics Edition,However,I Want To Thank You for Saving Me From Permanently Waiting By Making This Video With A Slideshow Of Pictures. When I First Heard About Curtis Lee,I Had No Idea That He Was Your Father. Who Was Holding The Camera For This Home Video Of His Final Performance In Front Of A Live Audience At The Oasis Back In 2002? How Did You Make It So That While We Watch This Home Video Of His Final Performance In Front Of A Live Audience At The Oasis Back In 2002,We Hear The Original Recording Of Pretty Little Angel Eyes?
Claretsdoowop Hi Arthur, Yes like yourself I'm a massive Curtis Lee fan, and Yes I'm also from the UK, I'm Midlands based. You mentioned "Calif GL-903" did you know Curtis got to number 30 on the UK Album Charts with that song in 1976. It was included on a compilation L.P. called Summer Cruisin', on K-Tel Records, NE 918 (UK). Many years ago I played the single and the K-tel track simultaneously and the 45 version finished before the L.P., so although they sound identical 'as expected' the K-tel track appears to be a very good re-recording. A little bit of Australian trivia; The Curtis Lee penned "Then I'll Known" got to number one in Oz in 1961, it was the flip to Bryan Davies' "Dream Girl". There are two versions posted on on TH-cam, the commercial recording and his live performance, Oh dear me! Well my friend I could go on for hours. If you're on Facebook please feel free to contact me. facebook.com/nigel.roberts.7792 BTW. If you scroll down my FB page you'll come across two tributes to the great man, I meant to post them in January but never got round to it. Regards, Nigel Roberts (Ned). For some inexplicable reason I appear to have created two TH-cam pages, one with a photo and one without, they are both me.
Are you really his son? If so can you please let me know if you have any footage of him performing pretty little angel eyes, or any of his songs, back in the 60's? I've been searching desperately to find some videos but I can't find any. Thank you so much :))
Curtis Lee, UK Trivia. Showaddywaddy's cover of "Under the Moon of Love" made 'Number 1' in eight Countries (inc. the UK) and amassed a staggering 20 million sales worldwide. Their cover of "Pretty Little Angel Eyes" reached 'Number 5' in the UK National charts. And their version of "A Night At Daddy Gee's" got to 'Number 39' also in the UK.
The "Under the Moon of Love" sales figures were taken from a newspaper interview with Ex Showaddywaddy drummer Malcolm Allured that appeared in the Loughborough Echo (UK), February 4th 2014.
Thanks Curtis Lee. I am now 78 years old. When I was 14, you made growing up a lot easier. RIP my brother.
