    Problem with this is it's just like fusion power, it's been '5-10 years away' for over 40 years now.
    I was diagnosed Type I in 1985, and I remember first reading about glucose monitoring using light shined thru your skin barely five years later (IOW since the late 80s). The problem with it is the precision has to be ridiculously high. The amount light changes analogous to your blood sugar is incredibly small.
    This problem has yet to be solved. And believe me, medical device companies have been working on this long before Apple was, like for decades. It is encouraging that Apple, with their enormous wealth and resources, are also. But don't hold your breath.
    As far as the glucose monitoring watches that are out now, they're all Chinese junk. They don't work. Rather they are wildly inaccurate, to the point of being useless, so don't waste your money.

    • @typ3me
      @typ3me  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree 100 percent. The new watches that claim to read glucose using just light have proven to be useless. I really hope these companies can find a solution soon, it would really be a world changer for many diabetics.

      I remember from physics class that sugar dissolved in water can rotate the polarized light probably something similar can be done
      If the same polarization effect can happen to infrared light
      We can use infrared laser with polarization angle detector at the opposite side
      At least it will give an alarm if its not accurate to use it for dose estimation

    Not possible…you need to have a sensor and transmitter to measure an accurate Blood Glucose. Apple also had mentioned a few years ago by doing a retina scan to measure Blood Glucose. Steve Jobs waited too long and lost his life due to procrastination.

    It is so weird to think that Apple would be the company effectively introducing a competitive pricing structure to what would certainly prove to be a very in-demand device.
    But that's likely how it would shake out.
    I will hope that there is a way to be able to have access to this technology that doesn't require complete conversion to the Apple ecosystem. As we have never owned an "iProduct" and are pretty ingrained with Microsoft / Alphabet (Android) at this point.
    Can't help but wonder if this is an underlying reason why there are so many compatibility issues with CGM apps on Apple devices currently.

      Yes, but this is probably also about the money involved and that you have to change it.
      I get it for free in Denmark.
      But the fact that I have to change it all the time... Argghg.
      I'm using Dexcom, xdrip and get the readings on my watch ... I love it.

    "Type One Talks" channel actually did a review on some Asian lower budget watches that claim to already be able to do this. He showed how inaccurate they are during a spike in blood sugar and also during a low blood sugar. If the wearer doesn't spike too high or low, the watch is more accurate but during huge blood sugar swings, it can't keep up with the measurements. Unfortunately, it is too risky for a real T1 to measure their BG and administer insulin based on these readings.

    Thank you for sharing, we have been using such a device for some time. But it is only now that I realized that Apple Computer/Steve Jobs already have that ideal years ago.
    While up to now, it is proven that non-invasive is not as accurate as the traditional finger pricking routine. We still use it heavily/daily because the results is precise enough for us to lessen our dependency on finger pricking to around once or twice a week. Hopefully Apple would make it even more precise in the near future.

    It hasnt happened yet and dont hold your breath....
    Current crop of CGMs can already accurately measure glucose level trends from interstitial fluid with a fifteen minute time lag from the actual blood glucose level. Pricey and still needs a fine filament under the skin but working and commercially available.
    Apple are somehow going to have to aquire RnD already done into NiR scanning sensors for blood glucose and develop software for them to incorporate into a watch sized package. And patent before getting this technology to market in the next year or two to get a share of the already rapidly developing CGM market....
    There has been, though not as accurate, research already conducted into a CGM sensor that can detect blood glucose trends from sweat and another from tears. Truly non invasive and far less complex to implement than NiR scanning....
    If they refine this technology enough it will be more commercially viable than Apple' tech.

    Yeah I don't see this happening, not saying Apple wont try or succeed but they would never claim its a glucose meter in the US because it would then officially be a Medical device which in turn would require a Doctors prescription. Only in the US are you forced to see a doctor in order to buy an Automatic glucose monitor and on top of that Insurance most of the time wont cover it unless your using insulin already.

  • @markporter717

    Until I saw this video, I had been delaying buying an Apple Watch in hopes that Apple would release its glucose-monitoring function in the near future.
    As another commenter noted, it would be marvelous if a future Apple Watch model will not only detect blood-glucose levels but can then connect with an insulin pump. The Apple Watch will then function as a closed-loop continuous glucose monitoring device.
    Perhaps, to create a closed-loop Apple system, Apple could also develop an Apple Watch-compatible insulin pump.
    And, for Android users, as Typ3me notes, the non-invasive light-focused technology is already being developed by other companies. It's not exclusive to Apple.
    Presuming this technology is honed in upcoming years, this could be another area of competition between, say, Apple and Samsung to develop and finesse a closed-loop program connecting the watch to an insulin infusion system.

    • @typ3me
      @typ3me  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great point, Mark. My greatest concern is the MARD score. Unless the non invasive continuous monitors are as accurate as the current cgms, the closed loop system may be flawed. Leaving very excited consumers disappointed, with less time in target range. This could result in a flop in the tech space altogether.
