    Low mileage engine, I think red oxide was from the factory and eggshell green was once they had been rebuilt at reme workshop. Good video again, thanks, found your video on o rings for the dash gauges and have managed to find a company that suppliers them separately. Many thanks

    I had one of these engines that smoked and ran rough after lots of new parts, I found the injection pump pulley had a crack in it and was opening up and advancing the timing and over fueling on one cylinder. Worth a check with some dye pen or just visual check.
    Great videos

    well in all honesty i would have myself taken the vehicle for a long drive with injector cleaner first .... the point being it has or rather had stood for quite a while. and sometimes things can be sticky so although it is not a fix for all things it might have given her some time to cough splutter and .... well we all know .. but i love watching your vids as it reminds me of myself so often keep it up regards from Scotland :)

    I expected to see at least one of the swirl pots sat in the block when you lifted the head but, although cracked, they were still attached to the head which is a good sign that they engine is low mileage. It will be interesting to see if the replacements sit noticeably proud of the head - usually an indication of previous skimming, not likely with an ex-military engine and they look original anyway. Have a look inside the old pots when you take them out as they have little nodules which burn away with use.

    Seriously, though, I have been waiting for you to pull the head, as I reckon you needed to, but: I thought you would find a problem with one of those plugs. I sure didn't expect the diesel leak thing to show what it did. The bores aren't showing any damage? 'Cos it has to be a broken ring or a holed piston surely?
    Certainly this has destroyed my faith in compression tests.

    My 2.5 had a similar problem, had pump rebuilt, front pulley woodruff key replaced etc, had very slightly low comp on one cylinder, turns out it had a slightly bent rod, could see it easy once the pistons were at top dead centre, one was ever so slightly low . It ran OK, not even a true miss fire, I did thousands of miles with it, was smokey on start up but reasonable when running, secondhand rod and it was fine.

      @@BritannicaRestorations You could see it with the naked eye on mine, it wasn't much but was just enough to make it run rough. I left my n/a at Glencoyne when he fitted the 300tdi, pump only had a couple of thousand miles on it after a good rebuild by fuel injection services. N/a ran perfect after the work but the 300 makes my 110 much more usable. Keep up the good work Mike.

  • @ralphplant
    @ralphplant 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Since the engine looks sound, my money is back on the injector pump. You tested to see if it was pumping fuel, which it was, but not tested pumping fuel under pressure. I wonder if you could hook it up to the injectors while they are out of the engine and see whether #3 is producing a nice spray of fuel provided by the injector pump. You did this on the bench, so the injector itself should be good. Not sure how you would do this with the non-flexible pipes... Maybe after you have the engine back together you could make a custom pipe and work through the injectors one at a time. Of course if you are getting a new pump anyway, then just wait for that and save yourself the trouble.
    No comment on #1 cylinder. Ghost in the machine.

      Well we are having bad luck on this!

    Hey mike. I need your opinion. Im wishing to freshen up a 300tdi for cross country trip. Im really keen to replace big ends and mains as motor has done 300k. Im putting a new head from turners prob as the existing head does work but has a minor crack around exhaust valve. Anyways i would check bores and possibly replace rings? Would you replace rings aswell or not if not reboring If going that far might aswell replace cam bearings which would need a machine shop to push out and line bore? Do the cams wear?

    • @BritannicaRestorations
      @BritannicaRestorations  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The cylinder blocks are made of a much better material than the old 2 1/4 Series engines and I have only bored 2 blocks - that was due to overheating and scoresI always fit new ringsAs for cam bearings, it seems the front one can give issues and wear due to belts being too tightI have a tool to replace them, so you may want an engine shop to fit them - the alignment of the oil holes in the bushes are critical!The cams give very few problems - check for evenness and grooves around the oil sealDon't be tempted to use cheap parts - go OEM where possible

    • @randomoldbloke
      @randomoldbloke 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As long as the oil has been changed regularly 300k is nothing i did my head at 320k no measurable wear and cross hatching was still there . Put the ported head from turners on makes a huge difference. At that mileage be worth getting the injection pump rebuilt get them to wind it up 10 to 15% they still get below 8k/100k of diesel and hardly fade on hills . I use mine for remote travel in Australia

    Hello Mike,
    That is an interesting mystery you have on your hand with this engine. I remember something like capilary effect with fluids. May that have some influence on no 1 cylinder?

    • @willyham4008
      @willyham4008 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It runs as it did before,can hit 60mph if need be.
      Engine was rebuilt in 2008 by the M.O.D it cant have rested on the chassis since then as I have had it waxoyled.
      I only had the head gasket done as I think the valve seals had gone leading to rapid oil loss.
      I use it daily to go to work too.
      Maybe on a long journey i.e further than 20 miles it will show.

    • @BritannicaRestorations
      @BritannicaRestorations  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ohh noo. Well hope you have time. No 2 rusty. Not good. 1 leaky not good. Think rings is booking on 1 and maybe stock in 2 as they not clear the wall, I think engine must out. New rings and a hone. My thoughts.

  • @spitfiremk1uk
    @spitfiremk1uk 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This engine has had poor atomization from its injectors for some time. This has caused excessive heat to build up in the Pre combustion chambers (Hot spots). This causes premature cracking but it also burns away the little internal "pips". These internal "pips" help start combustion even when there is low turbulence (Low RPM). I bet money when you pop out those hot spots and look inside you will see the pips burned away or filled with carbon completely. New hot spots combined with your overhauled injectors (Assuming the pump is good) and it will be fine. (Famous last words! LOL) www.lrseries.com/shop/product/listing/5165/ERR1223-HOT-SPOT-2-5-DIESEL.html

      Injectors bench tested and all even - still rough running

    • @spitfiremk1uk
      @spitfiremk1uk 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BritannicaRestorations For sure the cracking is normal and does not equate to any problem on its own. Nearly all crack and are acceptable to be refitted even when cracked. I think it is more about the pins on the inside that can cause low speed partial firing when burned away. Assuming the pump is good etc.

    • @gvaly699
      @gvaly699 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the Injectors were bench tested and are all even (I will consider this valid only with a test bulletin generated by the test bench ) the only possibility I can think of for a misfire is if the fuel pipe for 3 (and 4) is internally restricted (!)

Could no 1 cylinder have a problem lower down the bore? Bore worn? If so, wouldn't you expect to find contaminated oil? As you can see, I'm not an expert!!
