@@texanarchy666 There are a lot of p3d0ph1l3s on there, it's really easy to get groomed on VR chat. When I was 15, I already had 3 situations where adults had tried to do pretty weird things/confessed to me despite knowing my age. My friends that I had made during that time ended up wanting me to at least play with one of them so things like that don't happen anymore.
As the video explains, many people who struggle with social interactions in real life use VR chat to make up for that, therefore people who are more vulnerable, including minors, end up being on the end of some pretty nasty things due to not being able to easily recognize certain things early on that are alarming. The people will also try to be your friend first then slowly groom you into doing some things, so when you're a minor, it's easier to look over things just because you think "Oh hey, that's my friend" so you excuse the behavior.
Minors end up going into spaces they shouldn't be allowed in, end up having conversations they definitely shouldn't be happening with strange adults on the internet, etc.
There's a lot more that goes deep into this when it comes to being a minor on the internet, especially VR chat, but this is already long so I'm gonna stop here at these examples.

It has always been my belief that underage children should either not be able to access vrc or that they should be in their own phase where they can interact with each other but not adults. Obviously that wouldn't stop it completely. But it would affect to some degree and then be reportable if you found an adult or child in the wrong phase to have them removed.
I completely agree. Right now I'm 16 and some of the things inside of vrc really starred to screw with me. Really is addictive I have the game installed souly so I can play with whenever my friend group has an event. I never get on there casually anymore. Honestly just not a good place for young people. I can't count how many pedos I've run into

YES as someone whose played since 2017, I wholeheartedly believe it’s not for anyone under 18. Back then, we had less kids because you needed a comp or VR + comp to play VRC. But since the introduction of Quest it’s all filled with children whose parents do not watch them.
I suggested this in the VRC reddit and was immediately shot down by commenters, which was sketchy. I have zero desire to socialize with children in a casual way. I want to adventure and chat with other adults. It’s kinda the only way to have some sense of safety and accountability.
Quest 2 and maps like Among us increased the underage population. If you go to maps that are quest compatible, you will see shitloads of kids. I avoid those maps like a plague. I found Vrchat was I was 18. I played it on and off for a few years now. The amount of stuff happening there is too toxic for young people. I can't imagine being 13 and playing this game!

By a more social definition, a cult can also be a group of people dedicated to a person or belief system (including politics). That's why you have sayings like 'cult of personality', where a person has created an idealised image of themself (usually political leaders) so that it can essentially be worshipped. There's words like "cult following", who are made up of a group of fans dedicated to a person, idea, object or work of art.
So is this a cult in the sense of something religious? No. Is it a cult surrounded by one person who's word is law? Yes. Is it a sex ring? Also yes.

As a former “In real life” cult member, to be honest, this sounds more like a manipulator than a cult leader. More of a self absorbed person taking advantage of children than someone running a cult.
A cult has specific qualifications, much more than a charismatic leader with devoted followers. The BITE model is the legal standard. BITE stands for Behavior control, Information control, Thought control, and Emotional control.
Things outside the digital realm don’t seem to be under her control. Nothing like food intake, living situations, personal relationships, monetary decisions. This is confined to the digital, and while there are ABSOLUTELY digital cults, those leaders influence their followers to completely change their lives and behaviors online AND offline.
She does not seem to control information, which is essential in a cult. It may not be controlling the information members consume, but it could be HOW members interpret information. Having them doubt truths if it benefits the leader. Although arguably her normalization of underage relationships could potentially fall under that category.
Now thought control and emotional control are things this person seems to do. But that alone does not make a cult leader, it makes a toxic predator that takes advantage of children and builds harmful relationships.
I do not want to invalidate these kids experiences. I have also been the victim of online predators when I was underage, but I do not believe this is truly a cult. And by sensationalizing it, I personally feel it does a disservice to both cult survivors and the victims of predators.
Cults start out so normal. Cults that last are not sensational. Those who are in it, are in it for the long run because they have no other options or believe they have no other options. When cults are sensationalized because of the well publicized cults, people do not realize how MOST of them truly are, leading them to believe they are immune, when they are not.
Anyone can be susceptible to a cult.
Your videos are fascinating and I do enjoy them. I simply had to speak my peace to offer a different perspective as I have not seen anyone else share my opinions.

I feel like he did a good job of differentiating the vr cult from real life ones at the end of his video, yes it can have effects on people but mainly only minors with under developed minds because these things can feel real to them, like when the kids asked if they could go hang out in another world she put her foot down, while she can't control EVERYTHING like some cults where they physically live together but she still has plenty of control over what those kids do while online
I agree wholeheartedly. Indeed, Brandon's understanding of cults seems restricted to pop culture representations, bereft of criminological and psychological nuance and due diligence. That is not to say Alissa isn't a harmful person -- verily, she is. The damage she has inflicted upon her victims is real. But it is important for virual journalists(?) such as Brandon to make certain these unfortunate cases are represented as truthfully and precisely as possible. Such sensationalization warps the public's perception of crimes as these, to the detriment of the victims.

Thankfully some small bits of old chats I was able to recover after getting into the “new” (rebuilt) main server. The new main is fully gone now but I was able to archive over 9GB of info from it before that happened on top of screenshots of anything I found or messages I was able to get images of before it was deleted.

As someone who has studied VR under and educational lens, and for educational purposes it always makes me wonder how widespread these issues will be when VR is literally everywhere and in every household (because that will happen, I know for a fact it will, the fact that you can interview/research, teach a surgery, LIVE avatar renders for film, it's insane). Will VR tech companies have to have some sort of virual undercover crime stopper police? How do you even GET more security over a 3D virtual space? It's amazing that even just watching these single narrative documentaries pose those types of questions.

The possible advantage that fully-virtual enviroments give in terms of moderation is that, given sufficient storage, every detail of a converstation/interaction/event can be recorded and reviewed in 3D. Monitoring is not restricted to the field-of-view of a security camera or the perspective of a single person, everything is always visible.
I see no easy way of automating the actualy reviewing and moderation, but it does provide a possible moderator with some extremely powerfull tools.
The two biggest issues with such a technigue that I can think of are data storage and privacy.

MamaMax is another example of someone who isn't a "professional" gathering evidence and information to bust predators. The internet is much more self-policing than real life.

The amount of work you put into this is WILD, not just the casting, editing, finding images/videos/assets, but everything you did in researching, infiltrating, and destroying the cult. I've always been disturbed by how many kids are on VR chat (or VR in general, parents should know better that virtual reality can distort your perception of actual reality) and feared about groups like this, but I never thought it would get to cult status. Yeah I was thinking the same thing. I don't doubt the kid was abused and groomed or even talked to a therapist, but they weren't diagnosed with that. Perhaps some other form of codependent anxiety disorder and they conflated it, due to being young.

I was also thinking this. There isn't a way he could have gotten diagnosed with Stockholm Syndrome, but his therapist could have mentioned Stockholm Syndrome to help him understand his situation better and he took that as being diagnosed. It's not a diagnosis in the DSM, but it's still a widely known and accepted phenomenon in the psychology community so I'm guessing it was just a misunderstanding.

In the process, I found out the dark guild is still in operation in VRChat, and there are still kids in there. More important, they use a world called Project Aincrad as their base of operations. I joined up in January after being friends with Alyssa for around 3 months and only just got out after this was brought to my attention by a raid that happened earlier today. she erp'd with me as well and I'm 14.
