They're not inside the robots but they are fighting for real in the sense that LBX are pretty much like small drones with live weaponry that are marketed to children as toys and the main cast gets mixed up in all the conspiracies relating to that basically. It gets pretty intense regarding the main plot.
There's 3 seasons with the first two being more directly linked via a mix of returning characters + new ones being the focus and the third covering a more isolated incident on an island 4 years after which is why the cast changed at different points.
