- People always tell us that we arrived at Purnon just in time ... its moments like this however that we wish we arrived earlier and we feel acutely the responsibility to fight to protect her.

That’s European summers for you, unpredictable. Once you get the full roof done it will help you guys immensely. It must be overwhelming at times but don’t give up on her, she needs you now more than ever.
Thank you to share with us the dark side of the renovation. As a new subscriber, I am very impressed by your courage and determination. And as a French, passionate by the 17th and 18th century of my country, I want to thank you sincerely for saving this masterpiece and giving him a brilliant future.
This is the second wettest summer I have seen in 35 years...The worst was '11 or '12...I lost thousands in plantings in my garden, the bulbs and seeds rotted in the swamp that my garden had become.... I had a Dutch giant pumpkin that LOVED it, and it went in a growing rampage, so if you want a Cinderella carriage, plant Giant Dutch Pumpkins!!!
It's difficult, but you're there now and fighting. We're fighting alongside you in spirit even if we cant be there. On days where you're overwhelmed remember how far you've come ❤
I just read your post. How elegant and truly caring your words are. So beautiful!! I didn't want to just click "like" I felt compelled to tell you how deeply beautiful your words were. I could see in the video how tired she was bless her. Your words will lift her for sure. You are a beautiful person to pass on such encouragement ❤
@@virginiawestcot3111 Awww, thank you!! I feel personally connected to this one. I like most of the château channels but Purnon is my favourite Old Lady. And I'm thrilled that it's these two that have taken her on because I think they are a perfect match for her. I hope to visit one day soon but for while I'm stuck in Canada I just dream really hard for them lol 🥰
Purnon is worth it.
Look what you have done.
It will always be a struggle.
Hats off you guys. You must, sometimes, feel overwhelmed. Please, don’t give up.
While I empathize, I’m sure you realize more and more every day the enormity of the task you’ve undertaken. Honestly, the complete restoration of this lovely chateau requires the same or more resources than the nobility who had it constructed initially, so basically, the ongoing services of a whole army of craftsmen and servants. Praying you can secure for yourselves those precious necessities~🙏
Wow… Such an honest depiction of the struggles. If it helps, here’s one more person (living in NYC) cheering you on. So sorry for these struggles, but one can always be hopeful for sunnier days ahead.
Answer? More and bigger Tarps and more workers on the re-roofing work! Spend it now or spend triple later.
Good luck we are all pulling for you to do your part in time to save such an iconic treasure.
My heart aches for you while watching this. I’m sure you would rather be doing fun things rather than bailing water from the attics of Purnon. You have come a very long way. Hopefully there will be a period of sunshine so she can dry out and the roof artisans can continue and get her protected from future downpours. Fingers crossed and good luck!
Thanks so much for your lovely message
Perseverance, strong hearts, mine cries for her but a bit more for her caretakers, on these very hard days feel a drop of rain and think of your favorite flowers and imagine them growing in her garden ❤❤❤❤
Thank you for fighting to save this jewel! There are lots of folks cheering for you to keep up the good fight. Looking forward to hearing more updates about progress on the roof.
Get some kiddie pools and place around the major leaks
you really are Purnon's Heroin & Hero❣️
Umm…..heroine! Not heroin! Quite a difference ! 🤣🤣🤣
Those leaks are monumental and time consuming! Thank goodness you are there to put so much time into saving as much as you can from water damage. Wishing sunshine and speedy workmen on your rooftop horizon!
Veel kracht toegewenst om dit mooie chateau te restaureren en te behouden voor de toekomst.
Do not feel sad or depressed about this temporary bad summer weather. Most of the damage has been done since years, so this is not a major set back. Keep up the good spirits! It will soon pass.
Kudos to you guys for all of your tireless effort in saving Purnon.
The best days will come. ❤❤❤
This vlog had to be the hardest to watch, you both doing your utmost work and love for the chateau.
I pray the rains stop and the work can continue to save the beautiful chateau.
Thank you so much!
I’m so sorry. The race against time is so heartbreaking. Take comfort in every victory!
You are an angel suffering through the process of saving something so important. This coming alive lived only in millions of imagination's. So many have dreamed this into existence. God has truly blessed you to be the ones for something so very important
There should be a way to drape heavy mil plastic from the ceiling of the leakiest parts to prevent as much water from draining from the ceiling of the top floor to the floors below.
Oh my! So overwhelming. I’m amazed you keep on keepin’ on. Well done you two!🇨🇦👏
Hang in there guys! I feel for you all 😢 its not easy I know ! You’re not alone ❤
Thank you 🙏
Bless your heart. I know how that feels. Been there. Once the roof is done you can take a big sigh of relief ❤This is an immense project you've both taken on. You've come to far to quit :)
You have done such a beautiful job. This Chateau is so large, I can't even imagine the enormity of this job. I pray that the rain stops and gives you some relief. Take Care and May God Bless you.
Thank you for your message and for following our adventure.
It must be days like this when you want to cry or scream, and that’s ok. Hold onto yourself and roll into the next day.
Bienvenue dans la vie de château !
Patience, vous allez y arriver
Avec toutes mon admiration
Here is an idea which sounds crazy but works because I did it when renovating a leaky house 150 years old, not nearly as old as yours of course.
Get some styrofoam insulation panels to create a flat smooth surface on the floor of every room where there is a problem. Then get cheap kiddie pools or larger inflatable pools (they come in all shapes and sizes) that are up to two feet deep. You won't even need them that deep and each pool will cost no more than $50-$100 USD
Then drop in a pool cover pump. They are designed to operate down to a very shallow depth of an inch or less of water and you can run the hose to the nearest window. As long as you don't overload your circuits, you should be able to run 8-10 of them simultaneously because the pumps draw very little power.
I know it sounds bizarre but in any of those rooms where you can fill up a bucket, you can fill up a pool and pump it out the window. Love your channel.
I'm so sorry for your tribulations - here's hoping for an Indian summer to ease the workload and lift your spirits.
I pray the weather gets better. Thank you for all your efforts in saving her. It will be worth it.🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thank you
So sorry about the rain storms. The chateau needs you both so much. One day this will all be in the past. Thanks so much for sharing.
Thanks so much
Sorry for the bad weather this summer many storms here in southern ontario canada bad lighting houses being hit by fires break out many trees being twisted and broken and fallen fron tornados and shear winds but fortunately my roof still holding up in my tiny home !But you do what you can you have the strength to keep fighting your still young and you can get through this summer ! We use to say everyday is a great day met my husband later I was 44 he was 52 and he had health issues right at the beginning of our time in hospital first 6 weeks met !But said won't be a long time but a great time and it was sadly Joe passed away Feb 2020 just before covid ! We celebrated everyday as I knew our life time was short ! But we built hot rod and enjoyed cruising around and shared our old 49 pickup at car shows now doing it on my own getting back running well and will sell in the next year as all our friends purchase older and not traveling like we used to but we kept the old truck going it was our happy place just like your home is with all its quirks and holes leaks but the history to share with us is greatly appreciated you got this everyday is an achievement mine now is to remind people what great person my husband was and listen to stories about him from friends and family that I missed out as meeting him later in life ! That's your job today with your home And I love seeing it all !Challenges gives us strength in life makes rethink to how we can rise above and move forward! Like my husband when he lost his business and got more bad news about his health ee just said okay we will figure it out and we did his job was build the 49 studebaker pickup and I worked ! It was perfect for us kept Joe stress free from owing business and I worked 3 jobs and still working one at 68 today !But I love working started at 12 only took one year off in my life ! But quit 2 of the three jobs when Joe got really sick no regrets got to spend 90 percent of time with my sweetie his last two years drove our truck when we could it was special time made the most of our time together ! Thanks for sharing the video know about the challenges of your life !
Sending dry weather prayers your way. This too shall pass, but wow, so hard in the moment. Courage, dear people! Purnon is in your capable hands and will prevail.
Thanks for your wonderful support
Rushing around with buckets under leaking roofs reminds me of my husband's home. All hands on deck ! It was quite shocking for me as I had lived in a much smaller house growing up ! Ours was fairly spacious, but not as vast as the one he lived in or one we would live in much later until we left England to live in a typical American house.
We would love to be able now to spread out, not walk into walls and doorways all the time, even if we had to rush around with buckets! Absence make the heart grow fonder!!
You are doing a fabulous job saving this grand lady!
I don't know about cost because it is many years ago , but there are some (non) slate slates that are code and architecturally acceptable for old roofs. They are, I think lighter and easier to get than real slates and probably cheaper. France still has slate quarries, I believe, but ours were Welsh slates which were difficult to get and expensive. They were also heavy which put pressure on old timbers. We wore hard hats when it was windy as not only our roofs, but the houses in the town also had heavy slates that used to come crashing down in the streets.
I hope the weather improves and you can forget the buckets and tarpaulins for a few months!
Thanks so much for sharing your memories 🥰
So happy that the east wing is done....but sad for the central and west wing. Hopefully, one of the sections will be started soon.....
My heart breaks for you. To a much smaller extent I do know how you feel. It took 2 years to finally stop the rain coming into my bedrooms. But oh the sense of relief the day the work was finished. Your day will also come. Keep the faith .
Much praise and love from England xx
You two are amazing. I'm exhausted just watching you. What a beautiful and enduring legacy you are leaving. Once the roof is done, the celebration and the epic relief you will feel on the very next rain under a watertight roof will be immense! Just imagine.... NO MORE BUCKETS OR TARPS! That day will come. Know you are supported and cheered on from afar. Just a thought... could you use a small handheld, battery powered pump to empty the buckets? Maybe a little easier than stopping them out by hand.
So happy for you both and all the great work you have done. ❤
Thank you - we're thrilled that you enjoyed our video!
Having had a leaky roof my goodness I understand…and ours was tiny compared.
it can be so soul destroying…bless you for taking this huge project on
Perhaps consider purchasing a wet/dry vacuum for water cleanup? It would help save time and energy.
Sad but you’re doing the best you can❣️
Would it be possible for you to put tarps over the roof while you wait for repairs? Maybe you addressed this already and I missed?
With the style of roof, I believe somewhere they mentioned it is too difficult to access where it needs to be tarped over and the sheer size of what would be needed is also a hindrance. Unfortunately, this is their best bet for now.
You need a couple dozen kiddy pools rather than buckets.
Seeing the new roof completed is so satisfying! I am so sorry for all of the work required to try to save Purnon. Keep fighting it will be worth it!
Hello! I have been really enjoying your videos and your journey. Thanks so much for sharing.
What a relief it will be when the roof replacement is completed. Hopefully the workers are doing their absolute best to complete it. Not fun for you in the meantime during rainy times xx
Im so happy the new roof is happening . Blessings.
Keep going. You've got this. Stay Strong. Remember the journey as it is part of life, including the destination. We are all on your side. I often think of selling all my stuff and going to france (or portugal or italy) to work and live at all these chateau restorations to help in the gardens. It is what I know best. You have the means, knowledge and will power to rebuild the buildings. I would also love to do this in Canada and create from the start or restore an abandoned farmstead. You have support. Its ok to say what you are feeling right now, its honest. You are already giving it a try which is more than I can say right now.
Thank you so much for your lovely message. We hope you find a lovely project to work on!
You will get thru this, like you have before, like you will again. Know that you are in my thoughts and prayers!
Thank you so much
What a beautiful Chateau ❤❤❤. Please stay strong to save it ❤.We would love to rent a room there after it's finish for holidays. From Germany
Danke sehr!
Hello from Florida!
Hang in there. Hopefully next year will be totally different. It's not great but I have the feeling one more year won't collapse everything. It is just miserable for you at this time. You are doing great and certainly everything you can. Best wishes from another Aussie.
Thanks for the update and for fighting the good fight.
love your channel
Fabulous having the security of the wing with the completed new yummy secure safe solid roof. The rest , very disheartening. 🇦🇺
Oh my gosh that’s a lot ! All good wishes to you both , you are doing amazing work !
French ministry in charge of protecting the national Chateaus heritage should in my opinion provide at a low leasing cost high quality protective tarps for the roofs to prevent further damage during the renovation. They can easily transfer the tarps to the next project once the renovation is complete
Thanks for your comment. The roofers have constructed huge canopies to protect the western part of the chateau while the roof is off and the restoration is underway. It's proving more effective than the tarpaulins that were removed each working morning and then reattached at the end of the working day during the first phase.
Having been hit with 3 massive hail storms this summer in Italy we can only imagine the challenges you must be facing with the storms in France. But please don't despair. Whilst it must all seem bewilderingly challenging at times just think how much worse question time is back in Spring Street. Sending you our best wishes. R&M
The uphill struggles.... 😢😢😢
I hope you keep on hoping that the roof gets done soon. Sending positive energy your way 🙏
sure hope you can get some construction tarps wrapped until the roof is complete. bon courage!
Don’t give up, the chateau needs you and you've already done so much. Too much to give up now.
You can also purchase catches such as tarps that funnel the water through a hose in the middle which empty into a large garbage can size bucket. The tarp is secured to the ceiling. There are similarly designed smaller catches. That way you do not have to use so many buckets because it covers more area.
Gosh this reminds me of my childhood in our very leaky old house with buckets everywhere to catch the many leaks in the old tin roof! 😂 feel for you and hope the new roof on soon❤ even your sweet doggy looks sad🥲but doing his bit to lap it up too bless him/her!?❤
❤
Hard fight. Maybe you should try to put tarps on the roof. Bon courage.
Like pushing rope uphill!
Merci pour ce que vous faites pour le patrimoine Français. Courage, après la pluie vient le soleil.
So sorry to see the damage from the rain!😢 Do they sell plastic baby pools in France? Maybe those would work in the areas where you have several leaks. It would take longer to fill up then you could bail out the water as needed. It's worth shot.
Ordered your book. Looking forward to it. I could see some movies being filmed at the Chateau, as a producer I would be interested.
Thank you so much we hope you enjoy it! We would definitely be open to filming here :)
These huge houses, like the mansions of the English aristocrats, were built on the backs of the peasants and working class of France (and Britain) and they were meant to continue that way for hundreds of years but history intervened. Ironically many have now been handed over to the state and are maintained at the expense of tax payers. They are a wonder and to see them crumble is heart breaking. A few brave people like you are trying to rescue them but unless you have the resources or the state is prepared to fund you, it may be a losing battle.
You should be wearing mold protection. If you get sick, the project will never be finished.
Although there are still so many challenges before you, I am nevertheless so pleased that one part of the house is now protected. If having the remainder of the roof tarped is not an option, perhaps having some kind of system beyond buckets and jugs to collect the rainwater may be viable. Do all the attic rooms and spaces have issues? If not, perhaps using larger expanses of plastic in the worst areas, elevated above the floor - preferable above the lowest window sill in the room - hung at a slight slope, funneling any drip-water towards the window. Then using some kind of pipe to catch the water at the bottom of the elevated plastic to the window, where the pipe is directed outside. The window could remain open, but shielded with the use of some plywood, or, for esthetic reasons, a sheet of Perspex inserted in the open window with a hole cut for the pipe to allow the water to drain out. One would still have to monitor the system during rains, but it may be a lower maintenance process. I am so sorry that this issue is still so big, and I hope not only for a swift end to the roof replacement, but also to a summer with fewer deluges. Mademoiselle Truffe is beautiful and must be such a joy. Thank you for continuing to share your journey with the world. Best wishes!
Oh no...xxxxxx.
Wann soll mit dem Dach weitergehen? Wenn dann der Herbst kommt, wird das ja noch eine Nummer schlimmer. Und der Winter soll kalt werden...
Pretty daunting 😢
Indeed! Thankfully, since this video was made we now have a huge canopy protecting a large section of the western section of the chateau which is proving very effective during the restoration of the second half. The roofers have laid thousands more slate tiles expanding the watertight zone. Also, this week we finished restoring our chai (wine barrel room) roof. And a team of roofers have commenced work on fixing the roof of one of our small barns. Although years of work remain, with each tile laid and each roof finished we are buying the time to save as much of the estate as possible. Thank you for following our journey.
Thanks for showing the reality but Pomon will not always be like this because of you guys.
sorry about the struggle with the leaks.
Can tarps be fashioned to fit the areas not yet worked on? I’m thinking waterproofed parasite silk; something that will help the water roll off but not too heavy,
💙💙💙
What cutie 🥰
Try blow up kiddie pools. They only cost a few dollars and they work great. You can deflate them and leave them in place as floor tarps
Oyyyy.... What is one to do, with challenges like this?
Why are you not getting the old roof section covered by a tarpaulin? It’s quite a common thing to do.
Due to the immense size of the roof tarps can only be placed on areas which are accessible by the scaffolding
Cannot tarps be placed on deteriorating roof section as a temporary stay of water damage.
Due to the immense size of the roof tarps can only be placed on areas which are accessible by the scaffolding
keep up the good work! Wondering why you don't just cover the roof with a tarp?
Due to the immense size of the roof only the sections accessible by the scaffolding can be covered by a tarp
Due to the immense size of the roof only the sections accessible by the scaffolding can be covered by a tarp
Due to the immense size of the roof only the sections accessible by the scaffolding can be covered by a tarp
Nice Weather for the Firefighters?
Is there any way to place tarps on the roof till you can properly repair it?
Due to the immense size of the roof tarps can only be placed on areas which are accessible by the scaffolding
Where is the lightning rods? I pluraled rod, because the Château is so big.
How much did the Chateau initally cost when you bought it?
When will the work start to restore the western part of the roof?
it has already started - our stonemasons have started on the restoration of the chimneys on the western side and we will start the roof in the coming months
Pourquoi ne pas mettre des toile sur les parties du toit qui sont endommagé pour prévenir les infiltrations d'eau
So 😞 sorry
Can they not use a makeshift tarp to cover the roof?
we do have tarps covering the roof but in strong storms they struggle to hold up
Would of thought the roof would've been priority 1!🤔
They've been working on the roof for just about a year or so.
The roof is the priority… we started work on it nearly two years ago now and the eastern pavilion is nearly finished
Why didn’t they tarp the roof?
