I use 30grains of pyrodex as a max load from a 7.5"barrel at 30' and blow straight threw treated 4×4s. Rips the whole back out of treated 2×4s..i have no doubt it would kill a high of any size if close enough I'm talking 10yrds though.
You have no idea how right you are. I didnt even pay black powder any attention when I started shooting. Years and years and disgusting amounts of firearms later...I finally tried one out and they are so much fun. Incredibly cheap to operate. It's the "roll your own" of shooting sports.
I bought one from Cabelas (I think) Turned out to be one of.. the best I’ve owned. Never a jam. Load it full with Tallow-only over top. Make my own sorta cartridge. Girly papers- powder n ball with little lube balls wrapped in same. Awesome shooter and power. Tarnished per Blackie Thomas. Dig it! Can’t miss at 25 and under as fast as I can go. 1k plus! Interesting fact, you don't need to patch this if you're using slightly oversized ammo. There are .454, .451, and .433 sized bullets for this. They all fit in the gun, but the .454 and .451 are ever so slightly bigger than the cylinder so when packing them in they themselves create a tension seal from being squished, eliminating the need for a patch.
NONE of these revolvers use a patch. You use round balls that are pure lead and bigger than the bore. They "self swage" when you use the rammer to load.

Where did you get the idea that these guns are not powerful? These .44 revolvers have about the same muzzle energy and velocity as a .45acp if you upgrade to the Colt Walker or similar revolver, and the same bullet weight. Only when you get into the .45acp+p does it start to be more powerful than a .44 black powder.
Since I've never shot one of these before, I did some research online and watched a bunch of reviews. A lot of reviewers say the Black Powder just doesn't have the velocity as modern day ammunition and that they wouldn't trust the rounds with their lives. Maybe you've heard and tested differently? The interesting part is that a 250 gr. bullet out of the Walker is actually on par with a standard .45 Long Colt load, which is pretty similar to .45 acp. It seems in general, when you're dealing with larger caliber rifle and handgun bullets, the black powder isn't as much of a difference from smokeless as you would think in velocities, because a heavier, slower bullet seems to cater better to the slow-burning properties of BP. I have just recently got into the black powder stuff too, so I've been doing a lot of research on ballistics, and, I have to say, I would consider using my Pietta 1858 .44 as my sidearm when hunting, etc. Although they are obviously not as reliable as a .45 centerfire, they get the job done, and the 1858 has safety notches on the cylinder so you can load up all 6 without setting the hammer down on a cap.
and if you wanna get real power use a conical bullet. these can outperform 45. acp by a margin. the walker is a beast. ive seen some balistics gel tests with 1858 where it created explosive shockwaves in the gel.

People who doubt the effectiveness of these revolvers should go to the book store or library and check out some Civil war history. Get a look at the battlefield photographs of after the various skirmishes.A lot of shooters held on to their cap&ball six-shooters well after the appearance of the 'shell bangers'.
I have an old (1983) Pietta cap-n-ball revolver, 1851 Navy (Reb) in .44 cal. (engraved cylinder) I know the originals were only .36 cal. Mine was purchased thru Gander Mountain, paid less than $50 including shipping. I lived in Brooklyn then. Try that now. Living in upstate New York (or anywhere in NY) you need a pistol permit to shoot a cap-n-ball revolver. It's ok to own a black powder gun just not shoot it. Go figure. This is one of the cheapest black powder pistols you can buy but mine does shoot well. Heck I had it 34 years and still works fine. If you ain't sure you're gonna like the whole black powder thing this is a good starter. Not the BEST but it won't break the bank. Happy Trails.

@UnEqual Reality, not sure. Better check your local state gun laws. I live in NYS and called the Pistol Permit number for the State Police. I think these might even be illegal in NYC now without a gun permit, not in 1983 when I bought mine while living in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Current NYS law says if you don't have the powder to fire it it's legal to own even with caps and balls (bullets). Think you need a pistol permit to buy black powder in NYS. Hope this was helpful.

Virginia Paddler Black powder guns aren’t considered firearms by the ATF, and as a result can be shipped to your house without need of a licensed dealer as a middleman, hence why things like Traditions brand musket kits remain popular for reenactors

I have a older version that was produced for CVA by pietta 44 cal it doesn't have the safety notch like your version so best to cary on a empty chamber . Purchased mine at a pawn shop who ever owned it before stripped all the bluing off or it was a kit in the raw unblued.
I use mine all the time they are powerful and for the most part reliable unless your cap didn’t ignite then at the worst slap another cap on and go they are fairly accurate best thing I can tell you is try it out and give another review and I always carry six shots and put the hammer in between the caps on the notch

Also if you turn your revolver over and look at the frame in front of the trigger guard. You'll see a number its called the serial #. Last time I chronographed my 1860 Army a 44 lead ball was moving just over 910 fps. I have killed coyote, pig and other game with black powder pistols so yes they are very deadly. A lot of people watch this stuff and believe what you say. There is a bunch of incorrect information in this video. These old replica revolvers aren't toys they'll kill you just as dead as a modern firearm.
Yes it is true the ATF does not classify these old black powder revolvers or muzzleloaders as a modern firearm. Making it unnecessary to have to use an FFL for purchase. A firearm uses an explosive charge to propel its projectile. After the 1960's ATF required a S/N on all firearms which B/P firearms do have but are not classified as a firearm. The reason it is a .44 is because it is s CONFEDERATE navy. The colt 18521navy was a .36 cal but the confederate version was a .44 so it is in fact historically correct, I have only gotten three minutes and 17 seconds into your video and found too many flaws to continue. Griswold and Gunnison made close copies of the Colt 1851 Navy but used a round Dragoon style barrel. Frames were brass, barrels and cylinder was twisted iron. Production totals were between 3500 and 3700 pistols and all were chambered in .36. Dance Brothers in Columbia Texas produced a .44 caliber Dragoon copy using twisted iron for frame, cylinder and barrel. A very small number were made in .36 cal. In total Dance brothers produced between 350 to 400 guns. The 1851 Navy .36 caliber was the most used revolver in the Civil War. It was also the most common civilian revolver until cartridge guns were in widespread use.
Only way you get a chain fire from the cylinder end is by using under sized projectiles. Chain fires come from the cap end by using incorrect size cap/nipple or losing a cap while firing. Lube over the ball is used to keep fouling soft for extended shooting sessions and makes cleanup easier.
@@timvest8141 If the ball/bullet is undersized or chamber is oblong and leaves a gap between cyinder/ projectile then it could come from chamber end. A sealed chamber is not likely to loose its seal from a properly sized ball/conical. A missing cap or ill fitting cap leaves an open/partially open chamber with direct access to the powder charge. Watch a slow motion video of a cap n ball revolver going off and you will see how explosive the nipple end really is when fired. TBH chain fires are not that common, been shooting muzzleloaders since 1977 and have never had one nor have I met anyone that has. Spent 20 years reenacting and competition shooting in N-SSA events so have met hundred of guys that shoot them weekly like I do and none have ever had a chain fire.

When that hammer hits the cap it seals around it except where it is supposed to direct the pressure to the botto m of the cap. Tell the 600,000 or so people that were killed or wounded in the War Between the States that these guns aren't powerful. Compared to smokeless powder cartridge revolvers, yeah...smokeless provides much more velocity, but they are HARDLY as "anemic" as you're making them out to be. Around 2:20 or so, you state that it's "probably not too safe" to shoot varmints and such "around the yard". Handled properly, these guns are every bit as safe as a modern handgun. The term NAVY refers to .36 caliber. A Navy .44 is like saying "military intelligence". The ramrod is case hardened...that's why it isn't "blued". Gawd...I can't watch any more of this. I really wish people would do a little research before they make a video on something they know absolutely nothing about.

You should do a little research yourself, respectfully. Of the 600,000, diseases such as measles, typhoid fever and pneumonia contracted in camps killed 224,480 northern soldiers and 164,000 southern soldiers. Younger men and boys were much more susceptible to disease than older soldiers. Not all 600,000 died due to guns or wounds.
I think the colt dragoon is the best 44 bp revolver because it matches roughly the same power as 45 lc standard pressure so it really dose the most with its caliber without being a walker.

Got one given to me 20+ years ago as a gift. Haven't shot it in a while but it's still a cool gun. Don't dry fire and only load 5 chambers and leave the hammer sit on a empty. If that big hammer gets hooked on something and released the gun will go off on a full chamber shooting you in the leg.
Black powder is pretty powerful and you can take a deer easily with it. The revolvers also have serial numbers and many folks do put them on permits to carry for hunting, ect. People seem to ditch black powder and underestimate it's ability. The reason it's not recommended for self defense is because the caps can be lose and not seated properly which will cause a failure to fire. If you are in a gunfight, you don't want that to happen. It can be used for self defense but not recommended due to that reason. It's not a cap gun! It's an actual firearm but considered an antique firearm reproduction thus no need for a FFL.
To see this video one would think you were reviewing a BB gun or airsoft toy. These Italian firearms are almost exact copies of the original guns that laid the foundations of what became the USA. The main difference being that the metallurgy of these modern replicas is far superior to that available to the genuine firearms of the day. Not a real firearm? So much tosh spoken in less than ten minutes.
I have this exact gun. My father in law got it for me. Ive shot the crap out of it. Its super fun. And I love the natural patina mine has gotten from shooting it. Just make sure to clean it. And the chambers and bore. They're dirty! But great fun pieces. Also the ram rod is supposed to be like that, as you mentioned. Mine is beautiful.
The pusher rod is made a harder metal than the barrel. That's why the blue will not take the blue as well. If it were the same metal as the barrel, it would bend when loading.
I have 3 extra cylinders so i load on a drill press using a 1/4" drive bit in the chuck, It's got a level deck with soft wood below the cylinder. Wait to put the caps on until at the range. Speed-loader !

I carry a 1860 army with 45 colt cylinder carried the blackpowder cylinder for a long time never let me down i have had it under water and it still fire
You should put some kind of grease on the end of the cylinder unless you are using a felt wading that is greased between your lead and your powder. And use tight fitting caps to prevent chain firing. And if you are new leave one cylinder empty and put the hammer on that one. And just after each shot point the firearm up so the used cap if lose falls free of the action. Now remember it is a real firearm that most people don’t have a clue about.

I'm not The poster but the cylnder spring is a bit weak and breaks easily and the brass frame wears and loosens the barrel but I've also put over a thousand rounds through mine

I have one and it is fun to shoot, if you don't use heavy loads. The brass frame is inferior to a steel frame and could eventually stretch if you do. But, it is a "fantasy" revolver, not a replica of any actual historically produced weapon. No "Navy" was ever a .44 cal. All Navy revolvers were .36 cal.
Nice dude I just bought mine right now. Let's see how it is when it's here. Costed (with 100 caps and balls) 316 dollars. I'll have to buy the powder separately and the little bits and bobs because of hazmat regulations but you know, Amazon. Course this set me back so I'll be selling all my airsoft stuff.. but it's okay, I'm learning as an adult I don't have time to have fun anyways but this little toy should bring me some comfort and joy in the collapsing state of American law and order
always use bore butter or an ox yoke lubed wonder seal. it seasons the bore nicely and helps with clean up. for not being an expert you sure try to sound like one.
A 44 Round Ball using soft lead moving at 900-985fps is the semi wadcutter 45ACP of their day. Not powerful, pffffft! Hammer, Trigger, Loading Lever and Ram is Case Hardened. Real Colt 1800 gun's bluing would look more like a Cobalt Blue on the Blued Steel Parts. Dry Firing will Hammer Down the Cones making the Fire Pin Holes deform or close all the way. Your Brass Alloy Frame will loose that shiny glean fast and start looking the part of an authentic Brass Type.
With Guys Like Hickok45 and Mike Belliveau doing videos on these Revolvers, I have to wonder what possessed you to review that Colt Navy BEFORE you learned a little more of the History and technology behind it. Wars have been fought with Firearms since perhaps the 13th Century; which means for FAR longer with Blackpowder-loaded guns than the more modern smokeless propellants. Do you not realize that the Colt Revolver line was probably the high point of such firearms? The Army and Navy Revolvers of 1860 and 1851, respectively, armed the US and many another military into the 1880's; Colt didn't gain the Reputation from being " Not Powerful" There were others: Smith And Wesson, Remington, Savage, Starr, Tranter, Webley, and many imitators as well, all made a great business of supplying Soldiers with up-to-date weapons. I suggest you go rat in your backyard some Saturday. When the Police haul you off for discharging a Firearm in and unsafe area, perhaps you'll gain a little insight into what you hold in your oily little mitts, and MAYBE not be so quick to make this thing look like a kid's toy...IT AIN'T.
The brass may be pretty, but buy a steel framed colt replica. My brass frame, just like this one, warped after about 600 rounds, it's firing about 12" high, due to the lower front sight.

Believe it or not it's the ball size that reduces chain fire not the grease the grease just gets blown out of the neighboring chamber's with each shot when you see the ball the thicker the LEad ring the better gas seal you get
Unless you’re using over powder wads, you’ll want to grease the chambers after loading to prevent chain firing. Also, all 6 chambers can be loaded since you can lower the hammer onto one of the little raised bumps between chambers.
Hey Outdoor Enthusiast. I subbed. I am into the percussion revolver type of firearms and you are pretty spot on. The "Confederate Navy" was my first handgun. Unfortunately, the brass frame will eventually stretch over time. I didn't fire mine enough to do that but it was a trusty hunting sidearm for me. A good 44 caliber load will be about as powerful as a well loaded 38 Special, that is unless you went to a big Dragoon or Walker revolver, that is.
i agree on the "old wives tale", I've had and fire mine now for 40+ years, no stretching whatsoever, and I tend to shoot both the 138 gr round ball but also the 200 gr Semiwascutter.

I have news for you, that is NOT a Confederate 1851... The The Confederate army used the Griswold & Gunninson, a copy of the Colt 1851 Navy BOTH in .36 cal. The weapon was made in the vicinity of Macon Georgia, where the battle of Griswold took place. The Navy version was steel framed, the Confederate version was brass framed and had A ROUND BARREL. This to economize steel and to better balance the gun, yours feels a bit "nose heavy" mine, with the round barrel feels better...lastly 1851 Navys never existed in .44, the Italians make one because American always go for the bigger gun... Again just a bit of researchwould tell you that wars were fought with these revolvers historical loading was filling the cylinder to the face with powder and using the ball you would be able to compress the powder down show the ball was just below the with no wadding for a .36 caliber 1851 Navy it was deadly at a hundred yards and effective at 200 yards it is completely within these guns limitations with my uberti 51 navy in .36 I can shoot a 2 inch group at 100 ish yards with a detachable stock ofcorse it's delivering about the same velocity as a .38 special of course the type of powder you're using also has a lot to do with velocity I personally only load mine with 777 which is like 15% stronger than standard pyrodex
Navy is a caliber. This is a unicorn, but they are fun. Colt never made a .44 caliber 1851. Their .44 belt gun was the 1860 Colt Army. The Pietta Navy Yank 1851 .36 Navy with steel frame is a much better first gun. For a zillion reasons. Bruh, do you even TH-cam?

These 44 cal revolvers can shoot as powerful as 44 special with appropriate black powder load. With smaller load its more like 380 acp.

FYI a .44 cal cap and ball revolver with 28 grains of black powder has roughly the equivalent knock down power as a modern .380 auto.

You're right about the ram rod. It's not supposed to be blued. It's case hardened but most people tend to overlook that fact. Very nice review though!
$140 is an excellent deal, last year Cabelas had the same brass framed 1851 far $200. They had the 1860 for steel frame for $265. I got both of them

I have just recently got into the black powder stuff too, so I've been doing a lot of research on ballistics, and, I have to say, I would consider using my Pietta 1858 .44 as my sidearm when hunting, etc. Although they are obviously not as reliable as a .45 centerfire, they get the job done, and the 1858 has safety notches on the cylinder so you can load up all 6 without setting the hammer down on a cap.
and if you wanna get real power use a conical bullet. these can outperform 45. acp by a margin. the walker is a beast. ive seen some balistics gel tests with 1858 where it created explosive shockwaves in the gel.

People who doubt the effectiveness of these revolvers should go to the book store or library and check out some Civil war history. Get a look at the battlefield photographs of after the various skirmishes.A lot of shooters held on to their cap&ball six-shooters well after the appearance of the 'shell bangers'.

I have an old (1983) Pietta cap-n-ball revolver, 1851 Navy (Reb) in .44 cal. (engraved cylinder) I know the originals were only .36 cal. Mine was purchased thru Gander Mountain, paid less than $50 including shipping. I lived in Brooklyn then. Try that now. Living in upstate New York (or anywhere in NY) you need a pistol permit to shoot a cap-n-ball revolver. It's ok to own a black powder gun just not shoot it. Go figure.
This is one of the cheapest black powder pistols you can buy but mine does shoot well. Heck I had it 34 years and still works fine. If you ain't sure you're gonna like the whole black powder thing this is a good starter. Not the BEST but it won't break the bank. Happy Trails.

@UnEqual Reality, not sure. Better check your local state gun laws. I live in NYS and called the Pistol Permit number for the State Police. I think these might even be illegal in NYC now without a gun permit, not in 1983 when I bought mine while living in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Current NYS law says if you don't have the powder to fire it it's legal to own even with caps and balls (bullets). Think you need a pistol permit to buy black powder in NYS. Hope this was helpful.

Get a paper cartridge kit. It makes loading out in the field a lot easier and it is also historically correct as well.

Virginia Paddler Black powder guns aren’t considered firearms by the ATF, and as a result can be shipped to your house without need of a licensed dealer as a middleman, hence why things like Traditions brand musket kits remain popular for reenactors

Really? What 1851 revolver was manufactured in 44 rather than 36? Where is the tooling incorrect? What operation is not true to period? 30 years in cap and ball and never seen such an uninformed or vague comment.

I have a older version that was produced for CVA by pietta 44 cal it doesn't have the safety notch like your version so best to cary on a empty chamber . Purchased mine at a pawn shop who ever owned it before stripped all the bluing off or it was a kit in the raw unblued.
I use mine all the time they are powerful and for the most part reliable unless your cap didn’t ignite then at the worst slap another cap on and go they are fairly accurate best thing I can tell you is try it out and give another review and I always carry six shots and put the hammer in between the caps on the notch

I'm getting about 1000 to 1100 fps with my NMA and 900 to 1000 with my 1860 using lee 200 grains conicals...not powerful enough?

So you made a video saying this isn't a firearm. Must be why you're required to be 18 or older to purchase one. Also if you turn your revolver over and look at the frame in front of the trigger guard. You'll see a number its called the serial #. Last time I chronographed my 1860 Army a 44 lead ball was moving just over 910 fps. I have killed coyote, pig and other game with black powder pistols so yes they are very deadly. A lot of people watch this stuff and believe what you say. There is a bunch of incorrect information in this video. These old replica revolvers aren't toys they'll kill you just as dead as a modern firearm.

Yes it is true the ATF does not classify these old black powder revolvers or muzzleloaders as a modern firearm. Making it unnecessary to have to use an FFL for purchase. Just one of the reasons they have such a large following. Hope you have fun with your black powder revolver they are a true joy to shoot and collect.

A firearm uses an explosive charge to propel its projectile. After the 1960's ATF required a S/N on all firearms which B/P firearms do have but are not classified as a firearm. If my comment was the dumbest thing you have ever heard you really need to get out more you're missing some good stuff. As far as a blow dart you seem to have the blow hole for it.

The reason it is a .44 is because it is s CONFEDERATE navy. The colt 18521navy was a .36 cal but the confederate version was a .44 so it is in fact historically correct, I have only gotten three minutes and 17 seconds into your video and found too many flaws to continue. Judging by the comments there are many many more. Please do some research for your review something as dangerous as this.
Good ol' Gunnison & Griswold.
Griswold and Gunnison made close copies of the Colt 1851 Navy but used a round Dragoon style barrel. Frames were brass, barrels and cylinder was twisted iron. Production totals were between 3500 and 3700 pistols and all were chambered in .36.
Dance Brothers in Columbia Texas produced a .44 caliber Dragoon copy using twisted iron for frame, cylinder and barrel. A very small number were made in .36 cal. In total Dance brothers produced between 350 to 400 guns.
The 1851 Navy .36 caliber was the most used revolver in the Civil War. It was also the most common civilian revolver until cartridge guns were in widespread use.

Always use "bore butter" (crisco works) unless you want multiple cylinders firing at once.
And .44 black powder pistols are quite powerful.
Only way you get a chain fire from the cylinder end is by using under sized projectiles.
Chain fires come from the cap end by using incorrect size cap/nipple or losing a cap while firing.
Lube over the ball is used to keep fouling soft for extended shooting sessions and makes cleanup easier.
@@karlt8233 Paul Harrell did a test without caps on either side and no chain fires. That is a myth. Chain fires come from front of cylinder.
@@timvest8141 If the ball/bullet is undersized or chamber is oblong and leaves a gap between cyinder/ projectile then it could come from chamber end. A sealed chamber is not likely to loose its seal from a properly sized ball/conical.
A missing cap or ill fitting cap leaves an open/partially open chamber with direct access to the powder charge. Watch a slow motion video of a cap n ball revolver going off and you will see how explosive the nipple end really is when fired.
TBH chain fires are not that common, been shooting muzzleloaders since 1977 and have never had one nor have I met anyone that has. Spent 20 years reenacting and competition shooting in N-SSA events so have met hundred of guys that shoot them weekly like I do and none have ever had a chain fire.

When that hammer hits the cap it seals around it except where it is supposed to direct the pressure to the botto m of the cap. Tell the 600,000 or so people that were killed or wounded in the War Between the States that these guns aren't powerful. Compared to smokeless powder cartridge revolvers, yeah...smokeless provides much more velocity, but they are HARDLY as "anemic" as you're making them out to be. Around 2:20 or so, you state that it's "probably not too safe" to shoot varmints and such "around the yard". Handled properly, these guns are every bit as safe as a modern handgun.
The term NAVY refers to .36 caliber. A Navy .44 is like saying "military intelligence".
The ramrod is case hardened...that's why it isn't "blued".

You should do a little research yourself, respectfully. Of the 600,000, diseases such as measles, typhoid fever and pneumonia contracted in camps killed 224,480 northern soldiers and 164,000 southern soldiers. Younger men and boys were much more susceptible to disease than older soldiers.
Not all 600,000 died due to guns or wounds.
I think the colt dragoon is the best 44 bp revolver because it matches roughly the same power as 45 lc standard pressure so it really dose the most with its caliber without being a walker.

Got one given to me 20+ years ago as a gift. Haven't shot it in a while but it's still a cool gun.
Don't dry fire and only load 5 chambers and leave the hammer sit on a empty. If that big hammer gets hooked on something and released the gun will go off on a full chamber shooting you in the leg.

Black powder is pretty powerful and you can take a deer easily with it. The revolvers also have serial numbers and many folks do put them on permits to carry for hunting, ect. People seem to ditch black powder and underestimate it's ability. The reason it's not recommended for self defense is because the caps can be lose and not seated properly which will cause a failure to fire. If you are in a gunfight, you don't want that to happen. It can be used for self defense but not recommended due to that reason. It's not a cap gun! It's an actual firearm but considered an antique firearm reproduction thus no need for a FFL.
To see this video one would think you were reviewing a BB gun or airsoft toy.
These Italian firearms are almost exact copies of the original guns that laid the foundations of what became the USA. The main difference being that the metallurgy of these modern replicas is far superior to that available to the genuine firearms of the day.

I have this exact gun. My father in law got it for me. Ive shot the crap out of it. Its super fun. And I love the natural patina mine has gotten from shooting it.

The pusher rod is made a harder metal than the barrel. That's why the blue will not take the blue as well. If it were the same metal as the barrel, it would bend when loading.

I have 3 extra cylinders so i load on a drill press using a 1/4" drive bit in the chuck, It's got a level deck with soft wood below the cylinder. Wait to put the caps on until at the range. Speed-loader !

I have a 36cal brass frame that is great shooting and with decent power.
I just bought one of these for way too much money. I failed to buy one a few years ago when they were still reasonably priced.
I carry a 1860 army with 45 colt cylinder carried the blackpowder cylinder for a long time never let me down i have had it under water and it still fire
You should put some kind of grease on the end of the cylinder unless you are using a felt wading that is greased between your lead and your powder. And use tight fitting caps to prevent chain firing. And if you are new leave one cylinder empty and put the hammer on that one. And just after each shot point the firearm up so the used cap if lose falls free of the action. Now remember it is a real firearm that most people don’t have a clue about.

I'm not The poster but the cylnder spring is a bit weak and breaks easily and the brass frame wears and loosens the barrel but I've also put over a thousand rounds through mine

I have one and it is fun to shoot, if you don't use heavy loads. The brass frame is inferior to a steel frame and could eventually stretch if you do.
But, it is a "fantasy" revolver, not a replica of any actual historically produced weapon. No "Navy" was ever a .44 cal. All Navy revolvers were .36 cal.
How will the brass frame stretch?
The loading lever (and hammer) are color case hardened, which is why they look like that.

always use bore butter or an ox yoke lubed wonder seal. it seasons the bore nicely and helps with clean up. for not being an expert you sure try to sound like one.

A 44 Round Ball using soft lead moving at 900-985fps is the semi wadcutter 45ACP of their day. Not powerful, pffffft! Hammer, Trigger, Loading Lever and Ram is Case Hardened. Real Colt 1800 gun's bluing would look more like a Cobalt Blue on the Blued Steel Parts. Dry Firing will Hammer Down the Cones making the Fire Pin Holes deform or close all the way. Your Brass Alloy Frame will loose that shiny glean fast and start looking the part of an authentic Brass Type.

With Guys Like Hickok45 and Mike Belliveau doing videos on these Revolvers, I have to wonder what possessed you to review that Colt Navy BEFORE you learned a little more of the History and technology behind it. Wars have been fought with Firearms since perhaps the 13th Century; which means for FAR longer with Blackpowder-loaded guns than the more modern smokeless propellants. Do you not realize that the Colt Revolver line was probably the high point of such firearms? The Army and Navy Revolvers of 1860 and 1851, respectively, armed the US and many another military into the 1880's; Colt didn't gain the Reputation from being " Not Powerful" There were others: Smith And Wesson, Remington, Savage, Starr, Tranter, Webley, and many imitators as well, all made a great business of supplying Soldiers with up-to-date weapons. I suggest you go rat in your backyard some Saturday. When the Police haul you off for discharging a Firearm in and unsafe area, perhaps you'll gain a little insight into what you hold in your oily little mitts, and MAYBE not be so quick to make this thing look like a kid's toy...IT AIN'T.

My brass frame, just like this one, warped after about 600 rounds, it's firing about 12" high, due to the lower front sight.

Not in the Brass Frame and only in 45ACP or 45 Long Colt using all Lead Bullets and Cowboy Load Pressures.

You must seal each chamber with some sort of grease. It reduces fowling and the risk of chain fires.
Believe it or not it's the ball size that reduces chain fire not the grease the grease just gets blown out of the neighboring chamber's with each shot when you see the ball the thicker the LEad ring the better gas seal you get
Unless you’re using over powder wads, you’ll want to grease the chambers after loading to prevent chain firing.
Also, all 6 chambers can be loaded since you can lower the hammer onto one of the little raised bumps between chambers.
That's why we use 454 balls never had one chain fire . I'm sure if someone used an undersized ball it could happen but not with a 451+ size

Hey Outdoor Enthusiast. I subbed. I am into the percussion revolver type of firearms and you are pretty spot on. The "Confederate Navy" was my first handgun. Unfortunately, the brass frame will eventually stretch over time. I didn't fire mine enough to do that but it was a trusty hunting sidearm for me. A good 44 caliber load will be about as powerful as a well loaded 38 Special, that is unless you went to a big Dragoon or Walker revolver, that is.

i agree on the "old wives tale", I've had and fire mine now for 40+ years, no stretching whatsoever, and I tend to shoot both the 138 gr round ball but also the 200 gr Semiwascutter.

I have news for you, that is NOT a Confederate 1851... The The Confederate army used the Griswold & Gunninson, a copy of the Colt 1851 Navy BOTH in .36 cal. The weapon was made in the vicinity of Macon Georgia, where the battle of Griswold took place. The Navy version was steel framed, the Confederate version was brass framed and had A ROUND BARREL. This to economize steel and to better balance the gun, yours feels a bit "nose heavy" mine, with the round barrel feels better...lastly 1851 Navys never existed in .44, the Italians make one because American always go for the bigger gun... Again just a bit of researchwould tell you that wars were fought with these revolvers historical loading was filling the cylinder to the face with powder and using the ball you would be able to compress the powder down show the ball was just below the with no wadding for a .36 caliber 1851 Navy it was deadly at a hundred yards and effective at 200 yards it is completely within these guns limitations with my uberti 51 navy in .36 I can shoot a 2 inch group at 100 ish yards with a detachable stock ofcorse it's delivering about the same velocity as a .38 special of course the type of powder you're using also has a lot to do with velocity I personally only load mine with 777 which is like 15% stronger than standard pyrodex

Their .44 belt gun was the 1860 Colt Army. The Pietta Navy Yank 1851 .36 Navy with steel frame is a much better first gun. For a zillion reasons. Bruh, do you even TH-cam?
