  • I picked up this 1851 Brass Sheriff 5 1/2" barrel chambered in .44 caliber from BUDK. These are fun and functional reproduction pistols. This vid shows how they pack and ship these. Please comment with your thoughts down below.

    I've been told the use of brass on the original versions was due to lack of steel vs brass availability.

      Cheaper, easier and faster to cast for the confederacy

      The brass frame guns were mostly made in the Confederate States of America exactly as you said because of a lack of steel.

    I've bought 2 Piettas and both I had to do a little gunsmithing on...First thing you do before anything is remove the bolt and round off the chisel sharp end of the bolt that that slips off the wedge on the hammer...if you don't it will cut through the side of the wedge it slips off and in short time mess up the timing...One of mine would slip off and the bolt would come up at half cock so the cylinder wouldn't spin unless I held the hammer just short of half cock...when I discovered that, I disassemble my other 1851 navy that was hammering before the beginning of the lead in slot on the cylinder and also carving a line on the cylinder and discovered the same thing. Had to buy new hammers for both and softened the sharp end of the bolt...took care of the problem and now the timing is perfect...These were both brand new and unfired....

      My favorite so far is my 1858 Remington. Cylinder removal and installation way easier. But I haven't fired any yet.

    I got a Sheriff, minus scroll work. A Blast Now the Brass will stretch, Blackie Thomas does explain takes a few years, But hey for less than $300 shipped NO FFL involvement can not complain. I only run 20 grains a load, just punching hole in paper and aluminum, hoping to keep it for a minute. Looking at some steel frames liking the 36 cal 7 inch barrel, do not know yet. Yes they black powder is awesome, The thing here is the "SAFETY" one can rest the hammer BETWEEN the cylinders and carry the full 6, instead of 5 hammer on the empty cylinder

    How'd that loading lever work out? Seems too short to get leverage.

  • @pulesjet
    @pulesjet 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Here in New Mexico they just dropped it in the box. The ram rod is too short for me to do by hand. I damaged the latch by using a little pipe to give leverage.

    since you have both of the them, i been wondering for a while if the 5.5 inch 44 Navy Barrel will fit on the Army frame with the full sized Army grips?

    • @TheRealCobraBurnout
      @TheRealCobraBurnout  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1851 should fit on the 1860 army if that is what you are asking. I haven't tried any swaps but Guns of the West has some vids doing similar I believe.

      @@TheRealCobraBurnout ive started making... well basically a 1962 pocket version of 1860 Army, or Navy lol... Full size Army Grips with a block front Navy barrel in 44 cut down to 6.25 inches. I just have to fit the loading lever.

      My intent is to bench load paper cartridges in advance. Hopefully cutdown on potential powder spills or mess out on the old range. And speed up that part at least.

    Have you ever had any trouble with "BudK" like in terms of identiy theft, or them just taking the money and not sending the product?
    Cause I want to buy a gun from them but am worried about a shifty employee pocketing the money and not getting my gun.
