    5:10 - On Newton OS, you have to configure in settings to recognize _either_ "handwriting" _or_ "cursive". If you have decent cursive, its cursive recognition is pretty damn good. (In fact, Newton OS 1.0 *ONLY* recognized cursive.) The problem is if your cursive *isn't* good, it really struggles.
    And to "scribble to erase" you have to scribble in "one direction" - a patter like WWWWW - if you ever double-back on yourself, it doesn't erase, as you discovered.

    • @Mac84
      @Mac84 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yep! Wow, that takes me back. I totally forgot that version 1.0 would only understand cursive writing!

    I just bought an E-mate 300 on Ebay (real cheap because they said it didn't work). And when I got it, it is literally brand new. The screen hinge is so tight, it's hard to open. Well, I have an emate power supply (which it didn't come with) and I plugged it in and (no surprise) it didn't work. After inspecting it, the ram module was missing. I installed one, and it worked FIRST time! I have always loved this device.

    Ha! 8 6 7 5 3 oh 9! lol!
    Watching this makes me want to pull out my old Newton. To this day there hasn't been anything close to approaching it. It was designed from the ground up for pen input, and it worked perfectly for what it was designed to do. Sadly, it also wasn't designed to be future-proof, so things like TCP, the web, etc. were just too much for it to handle well, and... well, sadly, while I fussed and fumed and protested back in the day, it was the right decision for Steve to "Steve" it.

    My favorite thing to do with the Newton was to draw a picture of someone and then scribble over their face to cause their head to explode. With the early version of the Newton OS, you could ask it to "find Elvis", and it would tell you where "The King" was.

      @@ComputerClan if you find one from the U.K. with a very high (still top?) score in Crystal Quest by ‘Clare’, it’s probably mine that was stolen in the early nineties and I’m still in mourning. Still have the case, discs, manuals, and stickers though. One of the best trackballs I’ve used (and the only way to get high scores on CQ). Used for graphic design (DTP) using Word, Pagemaker, Adobe Illustrator, and Photoshop but postscript printers were few and far between and cost me as much as the Portable had (£3k). It had an impressive but quickly filled 2MB HD so had to offload artwork onto floppies before starting new projects. I upgraded the ram but can’t remember to what now. (Crying softly.)
