  • Hey friends, I'm back to the matching bedroom furniture series--this time sharing the final piece, the dresser!
    *This video was sponsored by The Home Depot as part of the ProSpective program.
    Dressers are my favorite project to build and I scaled this one down to keep it simple. It's a perfect size for a small bedroom, and entryway, or could even make a great oversized nightstand as well.
    Grab the project details and tutorial on the blog here: www.woodshopdiaries.com/how-t...
    And grab the printable building plans here: woodshop-diaries.myshopify.co...
    In this video, you'll see the Ryobi ONE+ 18V HP Drill and Driver in action. These are my favorite go tos for the shop and if you haven't checked out the new line of Ryobi HP tools, head over to @The Home Depot to see them for yourself! #THDProSpective

    This dresser is part of a matching series.

    Such a practical approach to woodworking! Making what you need with what you have. I've said it before, your simple methods and easy to build designs really empower the beginning woodworker. I, for one, appreciate that and I've been a woodworker for more than 30 years. Thank you Shara.

    Thanks again for sticking with your beautifully produced project videos with plans available. I see less and less woodworking project videos available these days so we appreciate you producing project videos that are "doable" with basic tools and a variety of materials.

    "Simple, yet classy" could be a tag line for your entire channel! This turned out really nicely. The white stain on white oak was a great choice. Glad to have you back! (P.S. 4:58 "cutting it close" while on the miter saw? see what you did there...😁)

    Definitely worth the wait Shara! My wife and I are planning on replacing our bedroom furniture after 30 years! She likes this dresser and bedroom set, so I may be down loading some plans from you. First I have to finish my TV wall with bookshelves and linen cabinets. So many projects, so little time!

    Nicely done, you show to your viewers that a beautiful furniture can be built without using expensive woodworking tools like some woodworking videos on TH-cam , it’s practical and budget friendly for weekend DIYers who don’t usually use tools on daily basis .

    Okay Shara, I’m sure if you saw me all sorts of confused about what day it was, based upon when I first watched this video (right after it’s release), you would have had a really good laugh at my expense! 😂. I mean, you can’t “always” release on Saturday morning, and then switch that stuff up on me!
    Alright, now that I’ve gotten That out of my system, I can focus on how cute this dresser is! And yes, I follow you enough to know your penchant for dressers, which is how I think I initially found you, but as you said, this one is a lot smaller than your “usual”. That is why though, I think this would actually be a perfect size for my daughter’s room. I’m just still debating on a dresser or a wardrobe, since floor space is that much of a factor….especially if you could see that sheer number of toys this spoiled rotten little girl has!
    Cheers Shara, and Congrats on another successful build…even if it was released on the wrong day!
    Your favorite fellow strawberry blonde (I not so secretly hate being called a ginger!),

    it looks really nice! if i wanted to make it with dowels instead of pocket holes, would the plywood layers be a problem?

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve used dowels with plywood before and it worked fine, but from my (limited) experience, the pocket holes are much less likely to split the layers vs dowels. Being even slightly off in your dowel hole location could cause a split. So, I’d recommend pocket holes for plywood, but that’s just my personal opinion.

    I have thought about the feet...since they just don't want to match the wood, paint them black to match the knobs.

  • @matsler89
    @matsler89 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The plywood color was so off because that was the "bad" side of the plywood. There is normally a good side that has a little bit of grain movement and the back side has a lot of grain movement and knots. The other side might have still not matched due to the different woods but it came out great.

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, I almost always use the “bad side” because I prefer the knots and character. 🤣 I actually like the darker color…if I wasn’t pairing it with something so light. I’ll save it for a pure plywood build so it’s not so much contrast.

    Good project and video, as always. I have a question. With using natural wood, the subject of wood movement comes up. The pine you install for the feet threaded inserts, since it goes from front to back, will it limit the expansion of the dresser sides? That pine piece is like a breadboard end. It does attach to the sides, but since it is attached to the front and back, it limits the expansion/contraction. Just curious, I am not sure.

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks so much! Theoretically, it could push and pull on the bottom front and back framing pieces as the sides expand and contract. So, you could turn them the other way and run them side to side vs front to back if you wanted instead. But theoretically, the drawer slides could cause the side panels to split as well as the glued on trim pieces on the sides, too. Lots of theoreticals involved with solid wood projects.

    • @scottmorris4914
      @scottmorris4914 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WoodshopDiaries yep, didn’t think about the drawer slides. Good point. How do you like working with solid wood instead of plywood?

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I much prefer plywood 🤣 I’ll be back to it soon. I enjoyed the opportunity to work with white oak. I don’t have a lot of hardwood options around my area (living in the middle of nowhere has its pros and cons haha), so plywood is much cheaper and easier to access and it’s much quicker and easier to work with. If I wasn’t trying to create content and get videos and projects out quickly week after week, it might be worth the extra time and money to build more with it. But honestly, I enjoy building with plywood more than anything else.

    Greetings, firstly thank you 🤜🏻, secondly I'm a huge fan, I almost never miss a video. I've just got one question, why don't you use the drill machine(s) to drive in the "hex" threaded inserts for the feet into the wood, I'm sure it could show how powerful they are?

      @WoodshopDiaries  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Thank you! The reason is because I don’t have a drill bit that size to use with the driver. It’s a pretty large allen wrench I’m using that came with the inserts. If I had the right size bit, the driver could definitely handle driving them, I have no doubts.

    9:21 Yes, optional. But gosh, the importance of edging BEFORE assembling!

    I love this. Is there any way to adjust it to make it 35” tall? I want to make one for my coffee and tea bar in my kitchen

      Yes, you can modify the height. Simply adjust the frame size as needed and then adjust the drawers to fit.

    Looks great! Sorry if I missed it, but where did you purchase the feet for the dresser? Do you have an affiliate link?

    Shara, by biggest problem is measuring my drawer widths. How do you make sure your drawers are the correct width for your glides?

      I have a guide to measuring for and building drawers here:

    This is not a criticism but a question on gluing sides of multiple boards together for things such as sides and top I did not see you use dowels or biscuits between the boards? What is your reasoning for not using these items? I do because “ Norm used them” but if they do not help it takes time to use them and I could easily discontinue using them if it is a waste of my time. thank you.

      Glue alone holds perfectly fine. It’s not a structural issue. But Most of the time people use dowels, dominoes, biscuits with panel glue ups just to help keep boards aligned. Biscuits add little to no structural strength and are only to help with alignment. Dowels and dominoes will add extra strength and help with alignment, but again, they’re not needed for strength since glue alone is stronger than wood. If using dowels or biscuits helps you keep boards aligned, then don’t skip. But they’re not needed for strength.

    Which brand is that sander? Has the colors of Dewalt but I don’t see them at their site.

      It’s a Mirka, but it actually died during this project and I had to buy a new one. I don’t recommend. I went with a Bosch to replace it. I haven’t used it much yet, but so far, I like it.

    Was the 3/4 plywood a one with “white oak” veneer? Was it available from local HD or Lowe’s without breaking a bank?😂
