    Here's the skinny: The C rating reflects the peak current (the flow capacity of the fuel lines pump etc. ). The mah rating reflects the total capacity (the gas tank size).
    A drag boat would need a low mah (for low weight) and a high C rating.
    A pleasure boat would need a high mah and not need a high C
    Your speed boats need both. :)

      @@IRONCLADRC also basically all batteries nowadays have bogus c ratings since they aren’t regulated. It makes it hard to compare batteries objectively when they can put whatever they want on the labels. Yes the higher c rated pack of the same brand will generally be a better quality battery but still neither of those spektrum batteries are hitting over 40-45c continuous. I guess what I mean to say is don’t judge lipos from different companies based off c rating alone.

      Peak discharge rate is a multiple of the mah and the C rating. In this case, a 9500 mah 90 C pack can theoretically discharge at 855 amps. A 5000 mah 100 C pack can do 500 amps. That’s why the bigger pack with a slightly smaller C rating should still outperform a smaller pack with a higher C rating.
      The actual discharge rates are usually quite a bit different than what the manufacturer’s C ratings will have you believe, but this is how the math is supposed to work.

    Man you just continue to share the knowledge in an entertaining way... another really useful video Big B 👍
    With battery technology (not just LiPos) moving forward at a pace, it's difficult to keep up to date with things in the RC world. So again, this has been really useful... thanks for sharing.
    I like the fact that you use 'simple' terminology to explain things. I always think of the C rating as a turbo charger. The battery has the fuel (current and voltage) but the speed at which the battery can pass that fuel to the motor is the C rating. Remembering that batteries don't 'push' the fuel to the motor, it's down to the motor to demand the fuel. But higher C rating means that it can deliver when the motor demands it. Heck that sounds like tech speak!
    Other important consideration is the lifetime recharge capability of the battery. Some 'cheaper' LiPos may offer high mAh and C rate, but burn out quicker than better quality batteries.
    Overall, batteries are just another variable in the RC boat world. So many variables... which is why having someone like you to tinker, test and tune is so valuable. 😉👊

      A 4000 mah when full charge at 4.2v per cell will take a discharge of 700mah to drop to 4v per cell. On the other handle a 9000 mah when full charge might take 1500 mah discharge to fall to 4v per cell.
      What this means is the 9000 will offer a higher voltage at the same ampdraw while being discharged. Resulting in more power to the motor.

    Another note about C-Rating that I don't think anyone has brought up has to do with reliability. I believe if you run a low-C rated battery in a boat (lower discharge than the peak current the boat's ESC wants to pull), then you stress that battery. Heat builds up, affecting internal resistance to go up, causing more heat. Eventually you damage the battery - one potential cause of swelling.

    I finally got my hands on one of these CNHL 9500 90C Li-Po packs. My god this thing is heavy - over 2 freaking pounds and it barely fits in my Sonicwake V1. No room to move the pack around to adjust CG. Fortunately, all 6 cells arrived at approximately 3.84 volts, and the balance lead wires are all equal length unlike your pack. I paid $149 on Amazon and the pack came with a QS8 connector. I use XT-150 connectors on all my high power boats (and cars) so I made an adaptor to go from QS8 to XT-150 using 10 gauge wire (yes this is a downgrade, but I didn't want swap the connectors on all my packs to QS8). I wasn't about to try to solder connectors on the huge 8 gauge wires either so I settled on an adaptor. The first run she hit 56 mph with a very mild 4514 CNC prop and she was running wet. After a few tweaks I got her up to 59 mph which is a PB for me. I ran the boat for an entire 10 min, but I brought it back to shore every few minutes to check temps. Things got a little hot, but nothing out of the ordinary. The pack still had over 20% remaining battery life too. I'm really happy with this pack, and I was even more stoked that it fit in my Arrma Limitless, so I have more than one vehicle to use it with. Cheers!

    CNHL lipos work very well. I use them for drag racing also.
    unfortunately C rating isn't regulated and there is a few ways to calculate it. So people will put about anything on a sticker. CMHL seems about close to what it should be.
    The MAH of the lipo gets calculated into the C rating of the pack. So a larger MAH, it may bring up the C rating. Theres other ways to build packs to have the highest C rating. Usually a bunch of small packs in parallel.

    • @LukeQuin
      @LukeQuin 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the same battery chemistry the C rating goes down as capacity increases.
      for example both these batteries are the same other than one being 2x the size:
      Turnigy 10000mAh 4S 12C
      Turnigy 5000mAh 4S 25C
      Big batteries with High C ratings is a red flag but nearly every manufacture does it. a CNHL 9500 90C as labeled should in theory be able to discharge 855 Amps till the battery is dead. taking only 40 seconds to discharge. Not possible, it would explode if the label was true.

So when your boat goes quicker and faster and weighs more the wrecks are bigger and more violent. Example : I have tailwhipped the SonicWake many times but it wasn’t until I tried a 10000mah 130c Gens ace 6s lipo that I found out that the prop could touch the rudder. Was your old collet slipping? If it was slipping in the old collet there will be wear on the shaft, if there's wear on the shaft it's not gonna fit as snug as you'd like it to fit. You can prep the flex cable and dip it in hot solder to help with grip

    • @3Dmodelheli

      Hi, yes the old collet was slipping, so I replaced the collet and shaft. I'm just not sure on how tight to go when tightening up the new collet.
      Is there any tips or tricks for tightening up the collet to the correct tightness without over doing it?

    • @IRONCLADRC

      I moved my speed control more towards the center of the boat, use a piece of CARBONFIBER or 3d print a mounting plate, and or some thin aluminum to centralize the esc.

    What kind of battery temps were you getting with stock electronics and prop? I took the sonicwake V2 out for it's second run yesterday. Outside temperature was 90 F. With a stock setup and a new 4s 100c 6000mah hardcase rc juice battery, I got 110s F on the motor, 130s F on the esc, which are within reason... But the battery is stupid hot.... 170 F ! The boat was all greased up, no binding. The only previous run was with a 100c 4s zee battery and that felt hot too, but i didn't have the temp gun to check it.

    • @IRONCLADRC
      @IRONCLADRC  ปีที่แล้ว

      My battery Temps were around the 140's I believe I think I had a couple pacKS up to 160. Anything over 140 - 150 could potentially damage a lipo
      Without changing props the only way your gonna bring those Temps down is to trim the boat up out the water. FEW TURNS ON THE TRIM TABS SHOULD DO IT, BASICALLY GET THE BOAT UP OUT THE WATER FOR A DRYER RIDE. less boat in the water = cooler Temps. You could also try moving CG (batterys) back in the boat.
