The roads have been particularly damaging cars for the last 20 years, the Mot failures on suspension components no doubt reflect this.
EXACTLY ... I've been driving around Cambridge since my suspension coils were replaced ... they've snapped in half again, and I'm now hearing scrunching sounds every time I go over a completely destroyed speed bump or the prehistoric remains of a mini-roundabout.
The whole city is a nightmare for suspensions at the moment.
I've done what I've been meaning to do for a while and got a Car Vertical report on my own car. Thankfully it was a 'non-event' with nothing sinister in it's past life up until I bought it 6 yrs ago (or since - obviously). One thing which was interesting was the detailed list of standard equipment at the end - I had always assumed it had a washer fluid warning light but it turns out it doesn't!

The incidents between UK Motorists and HGVs on French Motorways is shocking... the attitudes are awful...if you are driving your UK car in France just be hyper-aware of what is going on around you...there does seem to be prevailing disdain for british motorists by French lorry drivers. !
A high vis jacket and a box of Savoie wine visible from the rear window will prevent this happening however.

It does work both ways though. I've driven cars with German and Spanish plates in the UK and it's a honeypot for idiots. Germans were the same for Danish or Belgian plates, so I expect it's just the universality of idiots.
I feel that on the continent there is commonly an expectation to tailgate and wonder if that was the case here even though it would of changed nothing in this scenario. Richard Fanders has highlighted it on his videos

After another look, i think the Tesco tanker driver realized their mistake by the fact they slowed almost to a stop, probably in a belated attempt to give priority back to the cyclist, they then saw that the cyclist joined the path and so just continued. Very poor driving / planning though to get into that situation.
I’ve been in a situation like that before- in the truck. Speed limit changed from 30 to 40, and the cyclist I was about to overtake was doing about 20.
There was enough space to overtake before the next traffic island, it should have been easy so I went for it
My truck still had the cruise control in limit mode set to 30, so whilst I was alongside the cyclist, my truck stopped accelerating. I had to abort and pull back in behind the cyclist and he was not happy with me. Had the limiter been turned off then I would’ve passed easily
One of my most butt clenching moments as a cyclist was passing a pedestrian refuge island on a busy road and hearing the sound of a 44t articulated lorry behind me as the ABS kicked in and the trailer skip-skip-skipped along the road. I'm not sure to this day whether he didn't spot me or the island as both of us were in hi-viz...
@@jarthurs I know that feeling, in my case it was a transit van that emerged from the dust cloud with the sound of screeching tyres and smell of burning rubber behind me.
i was the one cycling, the driver messed up and we would have gone about our day but at the bottom of the hill he wanted to swear and yell at me like i made him try to pass me like that he got reported to the police and fine ect had he just said sorry id be happy with that we all make misjudgements in life but he seemed so adamant i caused it all and just simply wanted to bike home from work
From 5:50 + I was the "cammer" in this one. I wrote and complained to the logistics company; I got nothing back. I think I'll forward them this TH-cam link. There needs to be more accountability and consequences for this kind of aggressive behavior. What Ashley is doing to promote better standards of driving and driver/rider attitude for safer roads is highly commendable. I hope your channel and others like it thrive and grow even bigger, Ashley.

Thing is, I could understand if they were annoyed because you weren't over taking or going slower than he was, but literally, where could you have gone? Anyone with a brain would have been able to identify you were holding station until it was clear to pass...
Apparently you have to ride the trucks arse ahead in order to satisfy this driver, either that or just delete yourself from the road...

He wanted you closer to the truck in front so he could maintain momentum.
1:16 that pick-up truck is absolutely psychotic. I doubt this is a one off so I'd say that is a clip for the police.
A12 the far side of Ilford unless I'm much mistaken. You get a lot of Essex's loony drivers on that stretch of road; I avoid it where I can.
There is something a bit pitiful about someone that angry in a white Hilux, not like it is some murdered out big engine truck.

One of the worst I've seen. Absolute maniac.
Legislation states that a "showman's vehicle" may be up to 22 metres in length, as against the normal 18, and may in addition tow a trailer not exceeding 7 metres in length, up to a total length of 25.9 metres. So as the showman's vehicle had 2 trailers it probably isn't legal.
I briefly read the Reg83, and got a different view. Very complicated regulation
i looked for this comment before posting the same.
That is under the C & U regulations for vehicles having a GVM of 44 tonne.
so we have a 3 axle tractor unit with a plated weight of 30tonne towing a 4axle semi trailer with a plated weight of probable 40 tonne + 2 extra trailers on the rear.
Clearly this vehicle was operating under the STGO regulations which forbid towing more than 1 trailer. Also, if you look carefully, this vehicle combination is over the maximum length allowed for a multi trailer vehicle.
Which legislation is that?
According to The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) (Amendment) (No. 4) Regulations 1991, the extension from 18m to 22m only applies to vehicles towing a single trailer so in this case where there were multiple trailers the 18m max length would surely still apply.
According to The Road Vehicles (Authorisation of Special Types) (General) Order 2003, the extension to 25.9m only applies to ""(a)abnormal indivisible load vehicles; (b)mobile cranes; (c)engineering plant; (d)road recovery vehicles", so would surely not apply in this case either.
It actually has 3 trailers as the first vehicle is an articulated vehicle towing a semi trailer.
The UK's C&U regulations 44 tonne load limit is easily obtained with a 3 axle tractor unit and a 3 axle trailer. in this case the manufactures have fitted a 4th axle so clearly the trailer is too heavy for the normal 3 axles then there is the caravan and other trailer on the rear which are also adding to the GVW of the combined vehicle.
that clip with the tanker needs to be sent off to tescos. dude has forgoton some key aspects of training that they need and can correct
Tanker drivers are usually very good so this certainly needs following up. I wonder how Jeremy Vine would have got on in the same situation 🫣

I would say a useless cyclist. The tanker driver expected that he's dealing with considerate road user but he was wrong. The cyclist had every opportunity to ride temporarily on the not occupied pavement to be safe and let the tanker pass but he decided to stick his rights and fight the tanker. Too many selfish and inconsiderate road users out there
Good to see you branching out into clips featuring trees. I twigged what wood happen on that trunk road, so despite rooting for him to avoid contact, having hit it, the cammer should not leaf the scene of an accident.

I do wonder whether the tree should be charged with being trunk and disorderly?

The driver on the wrong side around a corner is in Kendal - this bit of road used to be one way and it can still catch out local drivers who have spent their life driving this as a one way system. Whenever I visit there now, I have to think hard to remember it's two-way now.
I have one about 15 miles from me, USED to be one way, but not more recently, & I was caught out. Very embarrassing, but in my defence, I hadn’t driven that for over a decade & any markings to signify 2way traffic were long worn out.
Here's a story of someone not paying attention. A bus driver went though a level crossing when the lights were flashing and the barriers hit the top of the bus. Network rail reported this back to the company. So the depot manger asked the driver what happened and the driver tried to claim the lights were not working. But the driver did not know that the manger had been sent a video from network rail showing what happened and the lights were working. The driver lost his job not for what happened at the crossing he would of just got a warning for that but because he would not own up to what he did when given the chance.
The clip at around 8:13 is a common thing I used to see when I was on the motorway everyday, two drivers signalling at the same time to move into the same lane.
I understand the need to increase speed for the overtake but the van was already signalling as the cammer changed lanes. What harm was there to ease back on the throttle and let them in and make it a non event?
In my opinion I think both need to be more observant of their surroundings and both need to be less stubborn to decrease the risk at those speeds 👍
You're right but the whole situation was a problem purely because of the white car middle lane hogging - 8:21 or so, the car should have moved left
@@Gobtik There was an overall high level of middle lane hogging (objectively, unfortunately not atypical for UK motorways though), als by the cammer. There was also an overall lack of keeping sufficient distance with the car in front. Overall bad driving (didn't see any poor driving from the lorry).
as I find myself saying rather frequently on US dashcam channels, being behind somebody doesn't give you priority.

Aye I agree with you on that one. It was clear the VW was going to pull out so I'd back off, let him pull out too and then just carry on. Make it a non-event as is said a lot on this channel.
At around 1:22, Ah yes the "Tough guy in a pickup truck" phenomenon. We get lots of those in North America, often in a black Ford F-150 pickup or variations thereof. Almost made me feel "at home" back in North America seeing that. I'm being sarcastic of course and I'd much rather folks didn't drive that way.
that was definitely a bit of American style driving. and you're right that it's the F-150s that are the worst offenders. some viewers may not be familiar enough to know that our F-150 is the smallest of our full size pickups - although they are bigger than average in the UK. the F series comes in 150, 250, 350, and then for people using them for serious work, the F550.
The alpha-numeric details on the Tesco wagon that really count are: 3YE 1203 - it's a petrol tanker. I hope that was reported to Tesco and the police.

Pickup drivers have invaded the hallowed pantheon of knobbery normally reserved for BMW and Audi drivers.
I was the guy on the bike, I had a chat with him when we got to the bottom of the hill. he was rude swore at me and could not give a crap i had to come off the road when he tried to pass.
HAD he said sorry and held his hands up i would have just let it go even know it was some shocking driving
he was reported and issued a NIP by the police when i used to drive for tesco (ironically) i know they don't take kind to matters like this.

It is a shame there are those unwilling to accept any liability or fault of their actions. Like you, if someone makes a mistake and they apologise then that is the end of the matter as far as I am concerned. We all make mistakes, myself included, and when I do I own them, learn from them and hopefully become a better driver and person from them.
You handled the situation very well and corrected the error of the driver in the best way possible. Lucky there was an escape route for you 👍

It’s the lorry clips that always get me. Obviously you have to be good at whatever your driving but when your driving something that big in an aggressive manner like that it just blows my mind. Only takes a split second for things to go wrong. Great video ash and keep up the good work. 👍
That's why the motorway crashes that get as far as the news always involve lorries. A crash between a couple of cars is just that and generally doesn't make the news, but as soon as a lorry is involved the amount of energy involved means that the crash spreads to at least half a dozen vehicles, usually with terrifying consequences.
Remember the first lorry clip was from France and it seems French lorry drivers detest British drivers when emerging into the motorway. In a previous Ashley clip, the British couple emerged too slowly for the French lorry driver. He then proceeded to tailgate them blocking them off and threatening them with a spanner
Yes multiple trailers can be legal but only if you have a showmans licence which are rare, possibly only available through grandfather's rights. Normal licence holders can only tow one trailer.
6:25 Just where did the lorry want the cammer to go? I really don't understand this sort of thing, if he was just in the outside lane hogging it and not moving over I could understand the lorries frustration at him not moving or speeding up (not that it justifies this response though) but there was literally nowhere for the cammer to go as both lanes ahead were blocked by lorries?
Maybe the best option here would have been to move left behind the tanker and let the idiot in the lorry just get on with whatever he was trying to do!
Penultimate video - we need have more sign gantries on roundabouts like this. Road markings might not get covered by snow in the UK but in wet conditions with glare they're difficult if not impossible to read.
Also the road markings get worn off. Making it impossible to read and very confusing if you don't know the area.
These kind of roundabouts are always going to catch out people who are unfamiliar. Got to watch everybody and help them if possible. I’ve been helped out by a local who had see. It all before.
9:52 That young man is entirely a product of the new Highway Code. He's (mis)heard of it and thinks pedestrians have 100% priority at all junctions and crossings, at all times.

He could walk down the middle of the road if he wanted! As long as it’s not a motorway: Rule H2 “Pedestrians may use any part of the road and use cycle tracks as well as the pavement, unless there are signs prohibiting pedestrians.” This sentence carries just as much weight as the much talked about “give way to pedestrians crossing a road your turning into” bit.

The Showmans vehicle reminded me of when i was cut up by the long 4 trailer Tourist land train in Newquay on another right turn. I made it a non event but it did make me think that if he didnt cut people up like that he would never get anywhere in the tourist traffic. I have often felt that this thing is not really suited to the roads around here.
9:00 is a showman's vehicle which exempts them from many regulations such as maximum length and number of trailers. saw that exact lorry at download festival as well, cool bit of kit!

At around 9:53, this highlights the need to be on very high alert if the car in the next lane (in this case, the cam car) slows down or stops "for no apparent reason". Including if you have a green light.
Also, as a pedestrian, don't just blindly cross the road just because other pedestrians are doing so. Check your pedestrian light as well as for traffic and cross on your own observations.
Driving standards is a reflection of society in general . Selfishness exacerbated by social media and mobile phones ( and the press ) has led us to where we are now. Technology in vehicles has also helped us believe we are better than what we are ( lane departure, collision avoidance, crumple zones ) It's still attitude from the human behind the wheel , or pedestrian , that's the real issue. That's why i love " make it a non event" . It's an approach to start solving the problem.

The amount of pedestrians I save on a daily basis as an hgv driver you would not believe. Smart phones have a lot to answer for.
At around 2:39 this is an excellent example of why it's often good practice to move out early for parked vehicles.
1. It gives you a better view of whats oncoming
2. Gives oncoming traffic a better view of you
3. As Ashley mentioned, it shows others your intent early on
4. If you need to temporarily abandon your manouvre you can do so with relative ease as you still have room
Coming from California, where this just isn't "a thing", and one remains in one's traffic lane, to here in Germany where it is very often necessary, this was a difficult lesson for me. (I'm licensed here for 8 years now.)
@@inyobill I can totally relate. Vancouver Canada is my other homeland and it's far more rare over there and in the USA to encounter these so called "meeting" situations with oncoming traffic. Btw I lived in Germany for five years from 1988 to 93. In Baden-Wuertenburg. The Black Forest area. Viele schone!

Been in that situation myself (see my longer comment above). Harassed from behind by a lorry, which even if he could get past, can't go any further because of traffic in front of me. I simply don't know what they're thinking.
I honestly have no idea. Surely since he's high up in a lorry he can see that there's literally nowhere to go... It is genuinely baffling.
I was the cammer. I think he wanted me to go right up behind the lorry in front and tail gate them, so we could all tailgate each other. Highly dangerous. BTW, I never touched the brakes, I did let of the gas just a little to grow my safety distance, until the lane cleared. If you look earlier in the clip, the trucker behind is obviously not fully paying attention, he wanders over into the hard shoulder at one point and then the approach speed as he blasts the horn is another clue.

9:45 that is a rare situation where I would have used the horn. Primarily to alert the pedestrian on the right, who was not paying attention and simply assumed because a car had stopped, it was safe to cross.
That's a good shout. It could also alert any car driving up in the left lane.
@@Zeyr01 exactly, and there was one. In my view, that driver is the star of this clip. It looks like the cammer was driving a van, so that other pedestrian would have been obscured. Their actions of stopping to deal with the first pedestrian almost caused a worse situation with the second, it's a bit like flashing your lights to let someone out of a junction. The horn would have made it clear they were not stopping to allow the pedestrian to cross.
@@nigel7uk ah, well a Corsa would not have obscured the second pedestrian crossing, so less requirement for the horn. But as you say, probably a good idea to use it.
soundng the horn makes no difference and can panic people into freezing. just slow or stop, the ped steps out and there's ample time to make this a non issue which the driver did.
You as the driver are the danger, not the ped, taking greater responsibility as the one presenting the harm in a motor vehicle is the law.
@@ynotnilknarf39 the horn use would be to alert the pedestrian to the actions of the other driver, not me!
I had a similar situation last week. A schoolkid to my right looking down at their phone and walking towards a zebra crossing, so I slowed and stopped, but the oncoming car did not and I blasted the horn just as the kid was about to step into the road. They froze stiff and the car shot across the front of them doing at least 30mph. Shook me up a bit, so close.

At around 8:30, I have had that happen too. Someone suddenly pulls out in front of me to "join" me in overtaking a slower vehicle. In such instances, I just back off and let the distance between us grow to a proper following distance for everyone's safety and leave it at that. No tailgating, headlight flashing, horn blowing or aggro of any kind and no kind of follow up "afters" (a term I learned from Ashley).
showed the wife a bit of ire on the last leg of the road trip. pulling the long grade out of the Tri Cities valley, and we came on a combine harvester grinding its way up the hill. so I throttled down to show courtesy to the artic and the guy towing a trailer that were ahead of me, and some idiot in a car slowed to match speeds with the combine as they passed it. - making us all brake harshly.
funny thing is I'd explained to her at the beginning of the trip that if she ever wanted to see what an angry truck driver looked like, look at one who's had to hit his brakes on an upgrade.
Hate to say it but, with roads being as busy as they currently are, there HAS to be some "give and take" in some situations.
On a busy road, for example, a lorry waiting to exit a side-road without causing a vehicle on the main road to slow down could be waiting for hours before a suitable gap appears.
When a lorry exits a side-road somewhere up ahead, it can become a non-event if other drivers ease off the throttle and give the lorry space but a lot of drivers will just keep their foot on the floor, drive right up to the lorry and then sound their horn and/or flash their lights.
Better letting him out than taking a risk. It is also helpful but only when the opposite direction is clear enough and don't wave him out let him decide. Often I have to do it near me where they come out of a big factory. A lot of other drivers do it, most people use common sense.

My late fiancée once stopped on the box junction of one of our local crossings. She realised her error (entering before her exit was clear), & was So self critical I Knew she’d never do that again, despite the barriers not coming down (no trains cos engineering works that day). Through being self critical she very quickly became an excellent driver. Miss that crazy gurl
I try to learn from my mistakes. I just wish I made fewer. As drivers go, I believe I'm pretty safe, though.

Yes, mistakes made when there is no danger but would have been an accident in different circumstances bother me for days after I do it.
so sorry to hear about that - being self-critical, she wouldn't have been a danger to other road users - far from it.
We need only watch Ashley to see how a "good" driver behaves - and learn from it.

You asked, at about 9minutes "Is it actually legal"... Well, possibly, and possibly not (I'd say not TBH). As I think the Lorry has a generator on the back (possibly no fifth wheel) its possible the driver only has a car licence too!
It's a messy group of laws, but I do think that combination exceeds the 22(?) Metre maximum length, or the 7 metre rule as the 1st trailer is too long IMO.
They do get stopped sometimes but as its their primary means of livelihood often escape with a fine, which they easily make back.
Yours is the third (inc mine) different interpretation of these regs I’ve seen on this thread. I do like nice clear rules lol
@@paulcollyer801 That's actually my footage, and i did entitle it "Is this Legal?" when i sent it to Ash. I've never heard of a showmans license before, and i don't remember ever seeing something on the road that looks like that.
I would say that i didn't have to stamp on the brakes or anything for the truck, so i don't fault his driving too much given what he was pulling.
0:45 and after seeing the near collision caused by overtaking on a blind bend, the pick up driver does exactly the same. These drivers need removing from the roads. I bet those cyclists would have turned left at that junction, simply waiting a few seconds is all those drivers needed to do.
The cyclists had actually pulled in and stopped before the pickup went around them. I wouldn't expect the Pickup to wait behind a parked vehicle tbh
@@RidgwayBrandon dear me! a cyclist who has pulled in and stopped isn't a parked vehicle - they are a pedestrian!! In which case, you need to give them 2 metres of passing distance. To think we share the roads with drivers like you. 😔
9:00 Looks to my untrained eye like the towing vehicle fits the legal definition "locomotive", which subject to conditions & special speed limits permits up to 3 trailers, it also looks like something that would qualify as showman's haulage, in which case the combination would be allowed to be 22m long.
It's quite possible it's legal, but you'd need to weigh the towing vehicle, measure the length, & consult the construction & use regulations to be certain.
Why was the white seat not in the inside lane ? The italian hgv the car was wrong when the is overtaking don't doodle before committing to the overtake !!! Hgv going up a hill needs all the speed he can carry DONT HANG ABOUT typical car driver doesn't understand their action have consequences.
If you are a structural engineer, architect, plumber, electrician, health care worker, surgeon etc, etc, you have regular courses, training days, upgrades of standards and new regulations to follow to continue to carry out your business/ profession. Yet, we let someone pass a driving test, then off you go to drive on public roads in whatever car you can afford to buy and insure (I'm thinking of that 24yo who drove a Range Rover sport through West London at 120mph, to end up on the underground lines, minus a leg, killing a female passenger), until you're 70, when you take another test.
I know most instructors offer refresher days and advanced driving training but most people just get out there and drive. How about a compulsory upgrade training session once every two years? 7:00 the HGV cadre does appear to be gaining a lot of murderous psychopaths lately. I don't know why. Starting to think that there should be a psych/attitude training and assessment as part of the C license across the UK and EU because people are losing their heads when in control of near unstoppable forces. Pilots would be hauled over coals for any such attitude and they job, while technical, doesn't hold nearly as much chance of conflict. IMO higher license cat should = higher person specification, not just passing the additional theory and prac test.
The Tesco tanker driver is typical of Tesco drivers, whether home delivery or hgv. When I complained about one of there drivers nothing was done. If I drove my Royal Mail truck like that I’d be in for a roasting at the least.

From around 6:30 onwards, absolutely dispicable behavior by the following lorry driver. All the cammer was doing was sensibly keeping their distance from the lorry in front that pulled out in front of them and slowed them down. I actually thought the lorry behind was going to try and undertake the cammer and then change lanes in front of them but thankfully there wasn't the room. As a sidenote, when the path in front of the cammer cleared and they were able to accelerate, I would have got my passenger to roll down their window and give the lorry behind a cheerful Goodbye wave.😃
God, people really don’t care these days. I think drivers need to pay a LOT more attention and should certainly watch your videos Ashley. It only leaves me to think: how did they pass their test? Thanks for helping thousands of people be a better driver Ash. 👍🏼

Two of these should've been reported, the white pickup at the start; should've boxed him in between them and called the old bill on him, likewise that lorry later on that was honking and flashing the car to move over when it was obvious the moron wasn't going anywhere, he should have been done for dangerous driving too; oh and the Tesco lorry. That one shocked me as I've never in all my years of motoring suffered any issues with their lorries.
6:50 seems like a good example of how short sighted ppl are nowadays, wonder whether it was always like that! See a lot of examples on my bike, like the guy this week barreling onto the pavement (where a pedestrian could have easily been coming around the corner) next to me coming out of a pass through bicycle garage, because I was still accelerating. Only so I can overtake him one second later again, which he was totally oblivious about. This one was extreme but similar things happen daily.

I saw a "Vision Zero" officer on Saturday, pointing his camera at oncoming traffic ... he's not in a massive big van, just standing there with a camera, very difficult to spot (hence "Vision Zero" - you can't see him until it's too late?)
The "Vision Zero" project is, to quote their mission statement, "make ANY road fatality impossible" - through measures of urban planning, "community education", and law enforcement. It started in Sweden, and has now been adopted as a traffic philosophy in the USA, and now the UK.

Nothing new about being harassed by a lorry. Happened to me back in the 1980s on the M5 southbound near Gloucester. There were roadworks, contraflow, and a 50 mph speed limit - and there'd been a fatal accident on that stretch the week before. I was on the contraflow in the left hand lane doing 50, following a queue of cars all doing the same speed. A lorry came up close behind and started flashing its lights and sounding its horn. He couldn't overtake because lorries weren't allowed in the right lane. I presume he either wanted me to move right so he could "undertake" me, or move onto the hard shoulder so he could go past - but even if he'd got past me, all he would do is catch up with the car in front and he'd have to repeat the whole process again. There was nowhere he could go.
He followed me sounding the horn and flashing lights for the whole section of contraflow. When we reached the end, he overtook and gave me the finger. Meanwhile, I noted his company name, phone number, and reg number.
When I arrived home, I phoned the number and it turned out to be a small transport company. I was put through to the managing director (same last name as the company). I explained the situation and he was mortified and most apologetic. He promised to tear the guy off a strip as soon as he came in.
I never did find out what happened to the driver, but I assume he was in for a nasty shock when he pulled in to his home base.
A lot of lorry drivers seem to think they can do 56mph in 50mph roadworks. They don’t seem to think they can do less than 56mph.
I had that once only a few years ago, restricted section at 50mph, on cruise control, car is doing 48mph based on GPS data, lorry behind doesn't care and wants to do 56 but can't pass easily. You can see the end of restrictions coming and he still tries to overtake me, got a beep and flash of lights because I accelerated away once I hit the 70 section

The issue with drivers driving down the wrong side of the road is becoming all too common where I am in Hong Kong. It's always Teslas (or Teslun as we call them here) and people with Mainland plates.
As for that Tesla "using all of the road", in all honesty I expected it. That's all too common with them, hence why they're Teslun here.

The Fairground vehicle is probably classed as a Showmans licence. They are also exempted from MOT inspections and can drive those long trailers.

The HGV towing multiple trailers is legal-if you're part of a fun fair. Apparently, the're covered by something called 'showman rights' which allows them. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will comment.

I’m a trucker. I might get some footage from my car where I stay behind a cyclist for some distance waiting for a safe place to pass. A number of places Much Younger Me Would have passed, but a couple of aborted overtakes without further incident many moons ago, & some harsh self criticism, & yesterday afternoon’s meander behind the cyclist is the safe result!

It was good to see the guy driving in France did not allow himself to be bullied by the lorry behind and instead he remained a place of safety until the first lorry had completed its overtake.
Much as I loathe drivers who brakecheck the vehicle behind it would almost have been appropriate here.
having just completed a road trip, my sympathy lies with the truck driver. there was no need for the car driver to play traffic warden while he waited for the artic ahead of him to complete the overtake, and it appears that was on an upgrade, so he forced the driver behind to lose speed, that he may not have been able to recover until the end of the grade.
@@kenbrown2808 I suspect the overtaking lorry is the one who slowed the traffic flow, remember many cameras distort distance between vehicles.
@@CycolacFan no, their lenses are fixed zoom, which means since you can see the car maintaining the same spacing behind the truck being overtaken, and not behind the truck that's overtaking. I didn't look to see if there was a speed stamp on that clip, but that would show the camera car slowing.
@@kenbrown2808 Nah, I can often empathise with the truck drivers in a lot of these clips, but if you were in the camera car here would you want to sandwich yourself firmly between the lorry in front and that driver behind? There was a video on this channel recently with another French truck driver where they pulled a crowbar after chasing down the cammer - while the response was excessive in that video it was at least eminently clear how the cammer had pissed him off - and how unnecessary it was. Cammer was limited to what he could do here by the truck overtaking in front, and the distance between them and the truck in front at least looking at the road markings doesn't significantly change during the clip. If they tightened up the gap they leave themselves liable to sitting in the blind spot of the truck on the right for an excessive amount of time - not a great position to be in.
As the clip ends and the first lorry pulls back over both drivers get on with their overtaking just fine so the aggression really seems unwarranted. They weren't going anywhere anyway...
The HGV emerging with the touring caravan attached has travelling showman exemption, normally it is a generator unit then ride trailer then mobile accommodation, they are common sites 9n the road in some areas durring the season.
Regarding the French truck driver in Spain: a number of years ago I was driving my car along the M25 in Kent when the smart motorway upgrade was still in progress and there was a 50mph speed limit. My car then was a 1ltr Picanto (since replaced with a newer red one). I was driving at 50mph or maybe a little less in the middle lane; traffic was fairly heavy but moving. I had two trucks come up behind me, tailgate me for some distance while flashing their headlights at me, and one of them then overtook me in the outside lane (which is illegal) and the other overtook me on the inside. One of them I called and reported to his boss. I suspect that the driver saw a small car and assumed the driver was a woman (wrong). I'm also a truck driver. I then mentioned this on the truck drivers' forum TruckNet and various people then assumed I was middle lane hogging, told me the speed limit was no excuse, and informed me that my speedometer must have been wrong and I would really have been doing about 45mph (which also isn't true even if it is for many other vehicles). A lot of truck drivers are impatient and have an immature, macho attitude. A problem I see *a lot* is them overtaking other truck drivers and then pulling in with just a metre or two to spare between their back and the other driver's front. There is a persistent problem with failing to keep their distance.
I do genuinely try to do good observations, I swear, but those reclining bikes are a nightmare to spot. I live in Devon, in an area with; a) beautiful scenery that's great to travel over by bike; b) lots of narrow high-sided roads that can be shadowy.
Those bikes just vanish into shade, or are completely hidden by the bodywork of even a Mini - they are so low you can't see the rider through the car windows. I'm sure they are easier on the legs, but personally I think they are an accident waiting to happen.
I did wonder about his positioning, but I guess akin to pedestrians facing oncoming traffic when walking on the carriageway without a footpath, it's percentage less hazardous. But as with anything "Have I been seen?" try to maintain an eyeline so you can see the oncoming as well as it giving them the opportunity to see you. Look after each other, but as a vulnerable road user, look after yourself first. Doesn't conflict with considering other road users.
The VW car that pulls infront of the dashcammer, he had his blinker on for quite some time already.
So he was hoping to take the gap that was to his right.
Then mr dashcammer decides he wants to overtake the vw.

At 9:17, I think that is interpreting the legislation wording quite precisely to the max.. It’s technically legal if it’s under a certain length (22 meters I think?) but the legislation surrounding multiple trailers requires a complicated interpretation, there is no simple “you CAN tow x trailers”, there are multiple “if’s”.. Either way, showmen have been doing this for decades, so much so they got their own piece of legislation but I think even that was altered recently.
Honestly, with these clips of french lorry drivers lately, I'm getting a bit nervous for my upcoming trip to Spain (from the Netherlands). I'm going to be driving the entire length of the country (twice), so I'll definitely keep a close eye out for idiots like that!

Showman's exemptions cover a lot, and I never quite got my head around them. However from memory, 2 trailers that are only "trade" and one that is only accommodation is legal in certain length combinations. Construction and Use Regs have all the details, Lots of references to different reg numbers and schedules.
Tailing lorry driver at 06:00 definitely has Duel on VHS and is eager for a sequel.
Honestly as a HGV driver, I can’t really call it with the Tesco driver. Those central reservations can come at you quicker than you think. Things like acceleration in those trucks can vary, even by just the slightest incline of a road you’ll get stuck at a speed for much longer than you anticipate. He’s attempted an overtake and saw he won’t make it because of the reservation and he slowed to what would have been a stop if the cyclist hadn’t have mounted the pavement. Overtaking cyclists in your car can be tricky, now imagine driving something 5 times longer with up to 44 tonnes and potentially half a mile of traffic behind you all weaving, ducking and diving attempting to pressure you into making progress. It’s no excuse to force an overtake but it can affect your decision making if you’re stuck behind a cyclist for a long while. He’s made a clear mistake, I don’t believe he was attempting to intimidate or force the cyclist off the road. He’s realised the problem during the overtake and slowed. Honestly dislike the “report brigade” who go on about reporting these drivers. If there’s been a clearly dangerous and aggressive incident then go for it. A mistake is a simple matter of learning from the experience and if you’re a good driver… using that experience to improve.
As someone else who also drives an hgv I couldn't agree more with what you said, I would say the tesco driver worked to rectify the issue by slowing down and staying out but the cyclist slowing down and mounting the curb gave him only one real option and that was to carry on and look like an ass

@@richardgiles2484 I think at this point , we’ve Just got to accept they are Road users and like all road users you get good and bad ones. I commented on another one of Ashley’s videos about cyclists undertaking when I’m turning left at a junction in the truck. The main culprits are those Uber eats etc wearing all black, no lights on their bikes, riding through red lights into junctions on/off curbs. I even got one on my dash cam going up the M66 motorway outside of Manchester.
Less of the general anti-cyclist rants, please, and more focus on the incident in question. Inattentiveness is Ashley's theme today. There's probably about 25 metres between the two bollards, so I don't think the second one "just appeared from nowhere". Yes, he gets a point for braking hard and not cutting in.

If you watch again, the barriers close opposingly, firstly the entry barriers, and then a significant time later the exit barriers! ONLY by entering when your exit isn’t clear can you get caught in such a setup

I've just done a long trip for work around a few places with over 1000 miles of travel, and similar things have happened three times. In lane three, following the car in front doing ~75 (yes... I know how horrifying lol) passing cars in lane 2 doing 60-70.
All three time it was a BMW, up my arse, flashing their lights... like WTF is your problem, even if I move there's about 40 cars in lane 3, we're all moving faster than Lane 2 and so are overtaking.
On one of those incidents the funniest thing was... on the A34, dual carriage way, lots of lorries, so I'm doing again 75 ish, following another car at the same speed, and we're passing lorries doing 55~60. no problem. This wazzock is again up my arse flashing but I'm not budging... I'm not the one holding anyone up, I'm already following a car ahead.
So a lorry decides to pass another lorry ahead so me and the car ahead slow down, and everyone behind bunches up. This BMW behind slowed down more than needed and when the lorry cleared me and the car infront both went for it again opening up the gap sufficiently that someone from lane 1 undertook the car behind me and cut in.... I can attest to that making him pretty mad.
For the next 5 miles he had his high beams on all the way, beeping, and swerving around -_-
Some people like... FFS... I can only assume these people just don't like being behind anyone, for any reason.

At 4:33, although no excuse for mistaking this for anything but a two way road, I do like the system of road markings in Canada and USA:
Yellow lines down the middle = Two Way.
White lines seperating the lanes = One way.
This system is actually more useful than you might think.
This clip also illustrates the need to drive at a speed where you can stop within the distance you can see to be clear. I know some might say it needs to be within half that distance to allow for the speed of the oncoming vehicles.

how many people still make errors with that system though? Given the numbers of road fatalities in Canada are almost double that of UK based on population then there's nothing to suggest the sstem there is an better than UK. As for the US, their killed/seriousl injured rates are some of the worst in the world.
There's plenty of crap stuff re signage on UK roads but it's superior to pretty much all places I've driven (all of continental Europe, US Australia). US is awful with terrible rules for certain things and speeds are far too high through junctions.

On the first lesson I do with students, I show them the old:

And explain to them that we only have a Moon sized area of vision that's full colour and full focus, with our brain fooling us into believing that we know what's going on (and that this lack of knowledge about what's happening is something that Magicians and Special Forces utlitise).
I also explain about saccades and how we spend 40 minutes to an hour every day, blind,* the acronym "SMIDSY" (Sorry Mate, I Didn't See You), and give them various examples of people missing the obvious, including a girl turning right out of a junction. I asked her what was coming from the left and she said, "nothing". She had glanced, but only very briefly.
There had been a police car with no siren, but lights flashing. She didn't believe me, so we turned round and went back past the school entrance where they had turned in. There were 2 police cars there, but if they had gone before we had turned round, she still wouldn't have believed me.

Re the "Showmans" articulated lorry + 2 extra trailers at 9.16
As this is a 3 axle tractor unit coupled to a 4 axle semi trailer it is clearly overweight for the UK's C&U road regulations and therefore must be operating under the STGO regulations.
Thus it is illegal to tow the 2 extra trailers. That said the combined vehicle length is also in excess of that permitted on UK roads.
Roads have got a lot worse since lockdown. I don't just mean driving. Road markings have been left to wear out too much and foliage has been left to overgrow and partially obscure the view of road signs.

The fairground/showman's lorry and all the trailers? Definitely iffy. I'd have to look that up, but as far as I'm aware, only agricultural tractors are allowed to tow two trailers, and even then, the rearmost trailer must be empty. Now, an artic, towing a trailer, towing a caravan? I don't think so. Surely, the artic tractor is in itself a vehicle, which is legally allowed to tow one trailer only - which is why artics are always a tractor/single trailer combination. Have you ever seen an artic towing an auxiliary trailer?
I know vintage agric tractors enroute to a show are sometimes seen with a loaded trailer behind the tractor, and a caravan behind that, which I'm told is legal because the caravan is classed as "unloaded trailer" but it stretches the law for sure, and I wouldn't want to be in charge of such a combination in the event of an accident. But, when it comes to a fairground vehicle, it could just be possible that the operator is applying a similar stretch of the law. Ever heard of a "showman's tractor"? Or a "showman's locomotive"? - If the artic tractor unit is registered as a showman's tractor (or locomotive), it may just about squeeze into the category of tractor permitted to draw additional trailers, but I seriously doubt it, however, the operator might argue otherwise. However, an artic tractor/trailer (loaded) with an equipment trailer (loaded) plus caravan (invariably argued as unloaded trailer) still doesn't fit the bill, unless the law for "carnies" is different to everyone else?
