Goof Troop is still one of my favorite SNES games and the only video game my mom has ever beaten. The OST is full of bangers, the puzzles were perfectly balanced for kids and as simple as the mechanics were they managed to do a neat amount of variety with bosses. Hoping we get a duck tales style remake for the game someday.

In terms of music with tonal shifts, Shining Force has a track that absolutely qualifies. The track known by fans as the "circus battle theme" has not just one, but two strong shifts from a tense chorus. Kinda short, but it slaps super hard.
And I might as well also mention the boss theme from Secret of Mana. If you can last against a most daunting foe for a minute, the music shifts to make you feel like the beast no longer stands a chance. Good stuff!

Shining Force 2 was actually my first RPG game ever. I was so young and the concept of controlling multiple units on a field was so new that I couldn't get past the first battle. It stuck in my mind, though, and years later I returned to it and beat the whole thing, falling in love with the series and tracking down Shining Force 1 and Shining in the Darkness as well. MUSHA on Genesis had a number of moments like Dylan was talking about, because the music is (sometimes) composed directly to the onscreen action, like a movie. Particularly a great moment in Level 5 where a miniboss shows up and the music segues organically straight into a boss theme. Not to mention that it's one of the all-time great Genesis soundtracks anyway.

I love the town exploration of Shining Force so much! It was my first strategy rpg and I've always been disappointed that it didn't become the standard for the genre since it helps break up the battles. As for whether it's still worth playing, I'm not really impressed with it's story by modern standards but it still has solid strategy gameplay. For tonal shifts in music, the one that sticks in my mind is during the "New York Disaster: stage of Hydro Thunder. For most of the stage, it's sort of epic, slightly ominous, background music but, once you're nearing the end of the subway tunnels towards the end of the level, it briefly slips to a sad piano soundalike version of "New York, New York" for a couple of bars. It's slightly different from "New York, New York" for obvious copyright reasons but you can easily tell what the soundalike is supposed to be if you know what "New York, New York" sounds like.

Dylan, the Blockade level in Jurassic Park Part 2 has exactly the kind of music you're asking about! It starts off as this very dark, broody piece, and then absolutely kicks into high gear around the 55 second mark. One of my favourite musical tracks/scores in the entire SNES library.
As for the game, it's an okay (but hard-as-nails) run and gun title, best enjoyed with its only cheat code, infinite continues, and a second player. The music in that game is some of the absolute best of its kind on the SNES, composed by Dean Evans. I bought JP2 the first time I saw it for sale in a store because I accidentally stumbled onto the soundtrack on TH-cam like 10-ish years ago and was blown away. It's one of the only games I can recall not named Super Turrican (1 or 2) to have Dolby 5.1 support. I'd kill to hear this game on a Dolby stereo setup (and Super Turrican, for that matter).

Goof Troop was absolutely a good time as a kid in the 90's if you had someone to play it with. Not a whole lot of good co-op games back then so it was nice to have a game you could both play at the same time that wasn't a fighting/racing game.

I loved everything Goof Troop as a kid, and the game was no exception. I recall I beat it several times either solo or with my sister, who insisted on playing Max. It also helps that the game is very good, and some of the puzzles at the end get surprisingly tricky (at least for kid me).

Shining Force was one of my regular rentals from the local video rental place (a mom & pop place that sprang up a few years before Blockbuster came to town). I played it so much that I eventually bought their copy when they sold it used. Paid $10 for it, but I rented it so often previously that I must’ve paid more than the price of a new copy.

EVO was such an awesome game. I’ve replayed it at least three times over the last 30 years and I think it still holds up. Yes, it’s absolutely a grinding mechanism but it’s a fun grind and the concept of evolving is a nice feedback loop.

Goof Troop is top tier gaming. I had it when I was a kid and played it almost just as much as Zombies Ate My Neighbors, my favorite SNES game. Goof Troop is such a treasure. Love seeing it covered and introduced to people who may have missed out on it.

YES! God, I love Shining Force, and especially the sequel, Shining Force 2. Between that, Phantasy Star 4, and good ol' Sonic 2 and 3, they solidified my love of video games as a kid that I still have to this day. I still love to go back and replay Shining Force 2 all the time.

I was never into strategy games, _especially_ as a kid, but let me tell you, Shining Force was just magical. Maybe it doesnt live up to more modern strategy games, but i can easily say it roped me in good.
It probably helped that i first played it on a relative's system, where they had a file farther in with much bigger battles. Its been a _long_ time but i do seem to remember it starts off somewhat slow, but i have the most fond memories of the later parts of the game.
HIGHLY recommend it, even for non strategy fans.

I once picked Shining Force up as a rental when I was a kid, and it blew my mind! I had never played anything like it before, and it's one of the "smarter" games that my kid brain was able to make sense of, at least a little. I'd definitely recommend it, it's good fun!

I loved EVO Search For Eden. It was one of the earliest RPGs I ever played.
Been loving this series, glad to see you and your team keeping up with it! This series is another step for game preservation by having readily available historical information on game releases

When I was a kid and rented games like every weekend, I remember one friday we went into the rental store and found out we could do a 2-for-1 deal. I excitedly picked out Sonic 3 and then I saw this game that kinda looked okay called Shining Force. I ended up spending most of the weekend ignoring Sonic for Shining Force and it became one of my favorite games of all time.

For a time Capcom and Disney was really *the** winning formula and Goof Troop is really no exception.
Also, I had no idea of all this backstory to the Shining Force series. That was super interesting, thanks for this mini-deepdive.
As for Dylan's question, I'd say Earthbound's _Cease to Exist_ does a hard turn about a minute in.

If my favorite Disney Afternoon show isn't Darkwing Duck, then it's definitely Talespin. This combination of releases makes me wish there was a combat flight sim of Talespin. And I know the Sea Duck doesn't have guns on it, I haven't thought that far ahead, but I still want to fly the Sea Duck with guns on it.

For dynamic music changes, the x-wing and tie fighter simulation on DOS did it well. The system changed the music seamlessly and dynamically depending on what’s going on. When you’re traversing or scouting, it’s background. When you get into combat, it dynamically shifts to Star Wars battle themes. All with great chip tune renditions of the John Williams originals. When you’re in distress or the mission starts going to shit it shifts again. Absolutely excellent games overall.

And holy hell the missions _will_ go to shit frequently. These games are one part simulation and two parts puzzle on how to compete the mission.

E.V.O. is still one of my all-time favourite games and I keep coming back to it. I don't understand why this game didn't get more attention and how it has never been remastered or ported....
