Making a Leather & Kydex Survival Knife Sheath Leather Working ASMR

- Let's make a complicated leather knife sheath (with storage for sharpening stones or matches). This time for a Cold Steel Drop Forged Survivalist bowie knife. Watch me play around with tooling, heat-forming Kydex, using a laser engraver/cutter, veg-tan and oil-stoned leather, woodworking (OK, that's a stretch, but still...).
For those interested in the tools I use in this video, below is an affiliate link to my Amazon store :
www.amazon.com...
Note that I might receive referral credit or commission on purchases made through these links (at no additional cost to you.) As an Amazon Associate, I earn commissions on the sale of certain Amazon products that are purchased as a result of traffic from my channel. My laser is the excellent xTool P2 55W CO2
Below is a link for saving a few bucks purchasing a P2 direct from xTool. I was given this code to pass on to my viewers when I first received the the laser. This also helps support the channel by earning a (very) small commission:

My Amazon store is up! I get a lot of specific questions about the tools and materials I use in my videos. So I've opened an Amazon store! It's a curated list of the stuff I use in my videos that are available for purchase on Amazon. The vast majority are items that I personally use and are sitting in my shop right now. If I couldn't find the exact same thing currently available on Amazon (a lot of things I purchased locally or elsewhere), I researched and found an equivalent.
Please note that as an Amazon associate I earn from qualifying purchases ... in other words, I get a (VERY) small commission on these. It's a cool way to support me and my channel! The link is in the video description.
Very impressive. I have a long way to get you your level of craftsmanship. You do give ideas and desires for one to better themselves with leathercraft.
Thanks of watching! 👍
Easily the most beautiful sheath I've seen in many a year. WOW!!
Thanks for watching!
I can't tell you what a wonderful, peaceful experience it was just watching that video. It's so seldom to see a true artist at work anymore, let alone one with this kind of skill. The end product was truly a thing of beauty.
It's Bowie big homie 😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
very nice Working .....
i cant believe I'm going to say this but, I really really hope you don't under charge people. this Is amazing work and the editing hides the many hours not shown. this type of work deserves a good payout for each one made.
I'm currently unable to take custom orders anyway. This was a personal project. Thanks for watching!
@@RoadAgentLeather When do foresee taking custom orders ?
I have built a handful of more complex multi-piece sheaths for my custom knives, but this just unlocked so many things that I never even thought to try! Thank you for putting this out here for us to enjoy and learn from. Wonderful work, and again thank you for putting this out into the world.
Glad I could help!
As a simple man with no skills, I can only dream of one day having such a fine sheath for my knife. Thank you for sharing
That was very satisfying to watch. Excellent craftsmanship!
Dozens of little details that make so much sense! I could watch for hours!
Thanks for watching!
Real fine craftsmanship. Beautiful, functional sheath.
Thank you very much!
wow, That is a multi generational rig!! thank you for sharing this video. And Congratulations to whom ever it is that will pass this sheath down to the next lucky camper!
that was a work of art. Amazingly shot edited and constructed. Thanks for sharing!
Чудо-ножны! Просто произведение искусства! Тут случай, когда ножны стоят дороже, чем сам нож! Мастеру ставлю БОЛЬШОЙ КЛАСС!!! 👍👏
Thanks for watching!
Ты ещё и принюхай 😂
@@losbrakoneros8681 а что ты, когда видишь ножны, принюхиваешь?

I've watched a lot of videos on making leather sheaths in the last year and that by far is the nicest one, great job
@michaelhallock906 Wow! Thanks!
I have the same knife and I can assure you that it's worthy of that sheath. It's a perfectly balanced fighting knife. I can get mine screaming sharp. I like your attention to detail. No I can't make a sheath as nice as you. But like you I'm proud of my ability. I have put some people in awe of how sharp I can get a knife. 50 years of experience helps. My dad used to say please not so sharp this time. I always got a inside laugh about it. But he was serious.
Thanks for watching! I agree; it's a very nice knife, especially for the price. I've got a whole set of sharpening tools. In my opinion, if it's not sharp it's not really a knife --- just a knife-shaped piece of metal.
The thing that struck me about this video, the main reason I watched it, was that I couldn’t imagine why someone would use both leather and kydex to make a knife sheath. I thought perhaps you’d use the kydex as a backing to stiffen the sheath and protect the back from wear.
Using it to make the mouth to protect the leather from the knife is frankly genius. Traditionally in many places bone or horn are used but shaping those materials can be tricky. Thanks for the idea.
Superlative craftsmanship. Beautiful...
Beautifully photographed, excellent lighting and sound. Masterful process and execution with plenty of hints and tips sprinkled into this excellent video. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I had to think for words for a moment! Thanks. Great work, very practical, May be our pollies should look at this. You need a knife and you need a fire starter at any time , any where, despite what they think.. One of the best pieces of leather work on the net. Well done.. Thanks again.
Thanks for watching!
I can sit here and honestly say. I’ve never enjoyed watching something more than this process in my entire 52 years of life. Not even watching my kids be born. I think I wanna do this for the rest of my life and I’ve never done it once. 😂😂😂
Whoa!, thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment!
Это шедевр, а не изделие! Красота.
What a sweet looking sheath, one of the best I've seen!! Thanx, Sam
Thanks for watching!
What a great channel. I make my own sheaths but every time I watch one of these videos I learn something new and get good ideas for improvement.
That has got to be the best knife sheath I've ever seen! Amazing leather work 👍👍
Thanks for watching!
Work of art created by the master of leathercraft.
Beautiful piece of art. Love watching the craftsmanship. That leather deserves a custom blade
Beautiful work well done I would be proud carrying this on my kit
You are a great craftsman. I like your attention to detail and artistic touch. I make fairly simple leather sheaths for my knives. I feel encouraged to step up my leather work game! Thank you 🙂
Good to see you’re a billiards player too. Nice work. Came over from Laser Everything 911. Your work is exceptional. Thank you for showing it!
Thanks for the visit and watching my video!
Thats was the most satisfying thing I ever seen on TH-cam. And one of the most beautiful.
Thank you! And thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.
This video was just so amazing. And the skills that you have are just Sooo awesome. One of the best videos of how to make a sheat for a hunting knife. The music was so peaceful and relaxing, just watching you make it was so exciting and peaceful at the same time. I'm just starting on making sheaths for some really good knives that I bought. I'll be trying to copy some of your skill works for my sheaths that I make.😊. You are a master in the making of sheaths. Thank You for sharing your video! I really enjoyed it a-lot. Hope to see more videos on making different sheaths. THANK YOU AGAIN !!!😊
Wow! Thanks a lot for watching and taking the time to leave a comment.
OK don't get me wrong here because in the end it's amazing work. I was confused about a few things in the middle but man that is what it's like for guys like us that do this at home and have to use what we have to get the job done. Not that I'm a leather worker but it still applies to us working men with common sense. Thank you for this video
Thanks! If you have any questions about the construction, just ask them here!
This is real craftmanship.
thanks!
Ooooooh, this gives me ideas for a knife I've got and some fish leather I made and have been trying to decide what to do with.
Hi sir wow wow👍👍out standing first class 👏👏amazing leather work my friend that is somthink to be proud of sir wow god🙏bless dino in uk lvly work😁👍🛸
Thank you kindly
I made a sheath for my bowie knife a few weeks ago. I'm a lefty so I have to change everything. Wish I had seen this first. Always amazing.
Something with a leather stacked handle would look sweet in that sheath. That sheath is to beautiful to even put on a belt. Such nice work my friend.
Wow, I hope that knife is worthy of that sheath, I never knew it takes that much craftsmanship to make a good sheath, amazing.
What a beatiful craffmanship.
Perfeito 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻, ficou top Parabéns.

As always, such an outstanding project. I don't know how you sleep at night with all of those creative ideas flying around in your head!!!

Beautiful sheath. Deserves a better knife!
awe . . . the knife is actually pretty good. Thanks for watching!
Están pesados haciendo estas obras de arte !! 😮
Great job! Bravo master! From Russia with respect!
Thank you very much!
Wow!!!!!!!!! That's amazing. Now I want to go make me one
Beautifully done! Awesome to watch. Also, fascinating uses for 123 blocks!
Glad you enjoyed it! And thanks for subscribing!
Beautiful and solidly functional work. I like the pouch for the DMT stones. I think the sheath totally outclasses the knife.
Thank you! And thanks for watching and subscribing!
That is absolutely incredible
Thanks!
And to think I found the oem sheath for my drop forged survival knife to be great. This work of art is absolutely gorgeous and I wish I could buy it. Thank you for some zen time today.
Thanks for watching!
Stuning job young man neat & clean and also very clever attachment of the belt loop. The only thing you need is a peaice of spacer leather between sheath body& belt loop and the knife will seat properly . Happy Trails
Thanks! The Kydex insert forms a slope that the blade rides down on (and keeps the sheath's mouth open). I didn't think about it until it was too late that I could have seated the insert a little deeper to make it sit flush. Will have to remember that for next time.
Wow .. turned out Beautiful.. nice work.
Thanks for watching
That is awesome artistry and function!
Thanks for watching!
very nice job !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Many thanks!!

You just raised my skill set up a bunch. Thanks. Excellent job.

Beautiful and amazing work
Thank you so much.
Very nice work. Clean lines and attention to detail. Glade you stated with the basics of leather work. Interesting how you solved the stretching of the leather during the tooling phase. A solution I have not seen before. I’m impressed with your ingenuity. Please keep projects and videos like this one coming. Thank you for getting back to what you do best. Inspiring…..
Thank you very much!
Excelente video 👌
Thanks for watching!
Master Craftsman!
That time when the sheath is worth ten times more than the knife.
Right. In all fairness a good leather sheath usually is worth more than the blade
30seconds in and I saw how cheap the knife was and now idk if I want to watch the full video 😒😑😁
The leather doesn’t cost much he probably used maybe 25-30 bucks in stock to make that
Okay? Someone might say the same thing about a $1300 Trijicon ACOG strapped atop a $600 rifle. But I have a safe full of such jackass-ery!😂😂😂
@@josh44779the knife is actually really good it’s 60-70 bucks and i beat the shit out of it on the daily
There is not much pruning and sanding after you are done. Beautifully crafted and precisely executed
Thanks for watching!
Once you put the blue masking tape on, then add tuck tape ( the red tape used with vapor barrier installation) no more stretch due to the tuck tape and still easily removed thanks to the blue masking tape
Good tip. And thanks for subscribing!!
I’ve made a few sheaths over time. Q: What’s the difference between a guy who makes things and a master craftsman? A: An infinite number of little things. I did chuckle when you used a drill press for lacing holes, because I’ve done that. I also had this fantasy of an apprentice in your shop asking “Why did you tool the back of the sheath?” “Because that’s what’s going to make it better than yours.” I do think you’re at a level of craftsmanship that having a “maker’s stamp” made to brand your work wouldn’t be out of line.
Thank You! I do have a makers mark stamp. But it's too large for this piece. I need to design and 3D print an abbreviated version of it. I've just never got around to it.
Awesome job. I can use a new sheayh for 1 of my knives
Friend, your leather work is art. I’m new to leather working and I have learned a lot from this video. I liked and subscribed. Thank you
Awesome! Thanks!
Stunning craftsmanship....WOW!!!
That knife needs an upgrade to match the sheath. Remove the black finish and polish to a satin. Then replace the plastic inlays with some burl wood or zebra wood inlays. Great work on the sheath, I subscribed.
thanks for subscribing! Yeah, I have considered doing that. Maybe I can wrap the handle in leather?
A very very nice leather sheath 👍 The leather sheath has more value as the knife.
I'm looking for something to do for a retirement gig to keep me creative and out of trouble. In my 20's I made a few basic holsters and rifle scan adds in the late 70's but didn't continue when I moved for a job. Your videos have rekindled my interest.
Thourouly impressed !
The beauty of creation
Шедевр! Лучшая работа,руки мастера каждое движение как балет,высокое искуство.!!!
Сразу видна опытная работа мастера. Богатый инструментарий! С такими инструментами приятно делать красивые вещи.
The knife is absolut beauty with this sheath.😎👍..one of the best lookink ,,couple,,(knife-sheath)...I have ever seen...you must be proud to carry this Drop Forged survival knife...very very nice look👍👍👍👍
thanks!

Absolutely lovely knife case thanks for sharing the process of making it.
Thank you for taking the time to watch!
Another awesome video! Your craftsmanship is wonderful to watch. I always enjoy watching you make some incredible, yet functional, works of art! Cheers!
Awesome, thank you!
Beautiful, very talented
Many many thanks
Nerves of sreel and the patience of Job.
I think I would leave a little bigger gap in the gussets at the tip, for drainage. Tools get used in the rain, after all....
Thanks for watching!
Having declared my dissatisfaction with this sharpener last night th-cam.com/users/postUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ I thought about the problem some more. It occurred to me that I might be undoing each attempt at achieving a sharp edge by the repeated attempts. So, I tried to clean up the unsatisfactory result by honing with only positions 3 and 4.Miracle!! A really nicely sharpened chef's knife, more than enough to handle my needs. Admittedly, it did not reach professionally sharpened razor-fineness, but it is now significantly sharper than it was. A bout of breaking down carrots convinced me. So, major apologies to the manufacturer, Amazon, and all happy and potential owners! Follow the directions: don't buy it if you have ceramic blades; and don't overwork your knife blade.
I'm eventually going to make a whole video on sharpening my tools. Make sure to subscribe to get the notifications!
I watched all your videos...very nice and looking job.....Sorry if I bother you with this question...I just startedin this trade like a hobby...but my question is what's the purpose to put the leather with saddle soap in the plastic bag???..thanks in advance
It's called "casing" the leather. It's to prepare it for tooling.
Absolutely beautiful work, true craftsmanship.
Thank you very much!
Super nice!
Thanks!
SO VERY AWESOME !!!! BEAUTIFUL WORK !!!
Thanks!
Amazing craftsmanship!!!
Thanks!
Holy crap your tools are awesome, is that a 3d printer or a cnc machine?
The laser? It's an xTool P2 55W CO2 machine. I do own a couple of 3D printers as well.
Absolute pleasure watching you work Sir, thankyou
Thank you kindly
Now you need to change the steel of the blade and the material of the knife handle!
Nah! This is actually a good knife. I love the one-piece forging. I've taken it out camping. Steel held its edge after some (light) wood chopping. Thanks for watching!
Knife looks like a Buddy K Special. Actually a Cold Steel Survivalist more worthy of Beautiful workmanship!!!👍
Thanks for watching! It's actually a good knife. Cold Steel often gets a bad rap in my opinion. I have several of their knives and they compare to much more expensive ones I've purchased.
