I'm a new immigrant to Spain, coming from New Zealand. We've been made so welcome, and we are so glad to be here. I go to university daily to learn Spanish and my husband goes to work.

As a brown person, people from New Zealand are some of the most racist people I've ever met in my entire life. Whenever I am in Europe, and I see a person speaking with a Kiwi accent, I make sure that I let them know how much I dislike them.

People from New Zealand really don’t experience any kind of racism in Spain, since they’re also caucasian like the average Spaniard and European. Immigrants who are usually targeted are mostly Muslim, Islamic, Romanian, Latin American and black

yes you are probably white. welcome to europe. Just like the white English, Belgians, French, Germans, Italians, Dutch, Russians and of course not to forget illegal Ukrainians who come to Spain and are also welcomed and treated better than the Africans, Moroccans and South Americans (except Argentinians) who feel themselves as Spaniards and are also accepted by spaniards.

Welll not always! I went to Spain , I loved Spain without visiting , the culture, the history everything and I was so excited to go because my great grandfather and my grandmother were Spaniards, and i was extremely disssapointed let me just tell you. I showed respect everywhere and friendliness because its just who I am and I live in the US were generally people are very friendly and most people were straight up rude in Spain; they would ignore you or argue with you, they were easily annoyed, and had no manners. No hello, thank you, you’re welcome, nothing! Definitely made me thankful for my adoptive country-US.

@Mario Cómitre I’ve seen many successful North Africans in France having been there myself. Most are law abiding. Most just want to work or study etc. the few you see who misbehave don’t represent the majority. They have a different culture and that’s ok. Not everyone has the same culture as Europeans.

@@stateofdreaming i mean the hostility exists for a plethora of reasons. many french people mostly the older generations resent islam and hate the hijab. and most north africans are muslims in france. the younger generations are more wise ironically and they understand the terror attacks that happened are not connected to islam and that islam forbids killing innocents. but the elder generations are stuck in ignorance on many things.
i mean personally when i visited paris i met many elderly there and they were quite nice and helped me when i asked for help so maybe the views towards muslims is changing.

@@weshouldsaveourselves6780 ok but you will find those nice elderly people also in Spain, Italy, Germany and any other migrant hub. From my experience as an immigrant living in Spain for quite while I would say that Spain is very tolerant to everything and everyone. But at the same time they value their culture and nationality so much that it's hard to nearly impossible to get along with them as friends or build any sort of relationships being from another cultural background. You might feel that you don't belong there, kinda isolating experience. On the contrary, guys from Latin America are much easier to get along with.
    P. S. All the things I say are IMHO :)

These people seem really nice and accepting. I visited Madrid recently and found the people to be so friendly. I'm Irish living in Germany and Germans are like the polar opposite: cold, mean, racist, obsessed with making immigrants do everything a specific 'German' way. It feels like being in prison. I would love to either go back to Ireland or see if I could move to Madrid. Is it a good idea (I know it's hard with jobs but I mean socially, culturally)? When you compare Spain to any other european country you see that immigrants integrate to a much greater level. Specially Ibero-americans as they are closer culturally than any other country (even EU ones). Immigration has been overall positive, however the increase in violence has to be acknowledged and cannot be tolerated. Countries that get this last point right thrive (Denmark) and those who don’t are doomed to fail (France, Belgium, Netherlands, Sweden, etc)

@@SolverCyn-vx1kv Thank you so much for replying! I’m just curious if there’s things that foreigners say or do that might be different from other countries. I’m a 20 year old man from America, but my ethnic background is Mexican.
I have no personal experience with this, but I’ve heard stories from other Latinos(mostly Mexican and Peruvian), saying that it’s hard for them to be accepted socially because of prejudice against them.
One story I heard was about a young Mexican girl that was studying in Spain and got along well with the locals. When she was asked about her origin, their demeanor changed when they found out she was Mexican. They apparently said awful things about her behind her back, calling her and her accent dirty and uneducated. From then on, it was hard for her to make friends
There are other stories similar to that one, and I would be lying if I said these rumores didn’t scare me. Would it be better if I said I was just American? Is there truth behind these stereotypes that I should be aware of? I don’t want to disrespect the Spanish culture and I’m afraid I will struggle socially.
I would appreciate any assurance that these stories are either rare, exaggerated, or only true with certain people(maybe older and more traditional people).
Again, I mean no disrespect if I came across that way. I just want clarification on these stories. And if they’re true, I want to know if there are things I can do to avoid people like that, or change certain behaviors that could upset people.

We have had not much problems with foreigners but there are definitely several groups that have a bad reputation in Spain.
The influx from Pakistan, North Africa and Middle East is received with hostility due to history or recent events.
Brits, they’re one of the worst tourists a country can have. And they’re arrogant without a good reason. Not the most popular foreigners.
Germans. They’re tolerated since, as tourists, tend to be rather polite. But they’re not particularly loved because they think they own Mallorca and the ones we’ve visited Germany haven’t felt welcome (nobody feels welcome in Germany to be honest).

@@jh5560 Vini Jr is an idiot. Although that not condones racism, of course. In Copa del Rey semis Osasuna's Moncayola (a midfielder) had to play as Right Back; Vini was clearly superior, and you have to see the guy's faces, puns and mocks to Moncayola. He also unilaterally broke a contract with his sponsor, but these days that would made a freethinker of him to some "enlightened" people. To me he's clearly the kind of guy that's a problem after a problem, won't keep word, underperforms when under stressful situations, and boasts and mocks others when is with tail wind. He will end badly with Real Madrid, and probably will end badly with football in general. He's still young, thought. The fact that some thick idiots used the N word instead of the I word (Idiot), won't make Spain a racist country as many would like to stress.
