    Great post thanks Desertsun02. I made a couple of these using the fittings, and activated charcoal for a fish aquarium. It comes in three mesh bags. Designed to be dropped straight into the aquarium, so mesh is water resistant, will not dissolve or break down, and because aquarium fish are so damned sensitive, it doesn't any Cr*p to the water. The bag, when cut carefully is enough to cut four sections out, and each of the bags of charcoal will make 1 1/2 of the filters. I hope this hint helps those asking about what kind of mesh to use.
    Thanks again!

But I'm not sure if an aluminum and activate carbon mix would create a problem. I hear chlorine kills actives carbon quickly... Thoughts?

    A price update for this coupler in my area. (05-26-22)
    I bought the 1 1/4 inch coupler from lowes for 13.60. (The end 2 pieces that get compressed, are 1.14 each.)
    Their is a 1 1/2 inch coupler which is fatter for around 16.00.
    The home window screen cloth is about 14 mesh.(# of squares per 1")
    The marineland carbon is 6x12 iirc so it works well.
    If you get a smaller grain carbon, you will need a finer mesh material to hold it in.
    Hope this helps some folks.
    Keep up the good work desertsun. We all might be needing these things soon enough.

    Wow! This is just what I think I'm looking for! We have a 2" water line gravity fed, coming from a spring to a large storage tank. How do you think this would work for filtering out sediment from the stream before it gets to the tank?

    • @preston2345
      @preston2345 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would probably work pretty well but as for the longevity of this particular filter, for its size I'd be skeptical. For your purposes, I'd apply the same idea but make the 2" piece of pvc filled with activated carbon much longer than the one in the video. Then just use mesh and couplings. I have a very similar water system at my cabin and I'm going to try it to remove some minerals from the groundwater

    • @Noah-hz5ll
      @Noah-hz5ll 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not too familiar with filtering systems, but I do know that activated charcoal's function is based on its structure, which is basically just millions of little pores and such, and crud gets in those. So based on that, I would think direction is irrelevant, but I'd bet shaking it up from time to time to evenly disperse the used and unused charcoal would be a good idea!

    • @michaelwatts8052
      @michaelwatts8052 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Noah-hz5ll, you were correct on everything except you never want to shake up or even drop a charcoal filter. It's easy to think that it would help but in reality through extensive research around the world it's been evident that when a charcoal filter is disturbed after the initial filtering so are all the micro-bacterias being disturbed and can easily fall away from the Activated Charcoal Pores. If such a disturbance happens to the filter you'll need to flush the filter with running water for about 30 minutes and then let it sit and dry completely without forced air or heat which could take a day or two.

    • @michaelwatts8052
      @michaelwatts8052 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      However, even though I don't see why this DIY filter wouldn't work I'd still highly recommend sending a water sample that's been filtered to get tested. The difference between homemade and store bought is one has already been tested multiple times and approved before shipped out while the other may actually be better suited as a paper weight.
      All I'm saying is you wouldn't buy a filter from the store if it wasn't marked as tested and approved so why would you build/use a homemade filter without any filtration experience without having it tested? Be smart!

Can save money because you can cut each screen to exact size and avoiding having to trim anything unsightly. interesting idea. i wonder if it might be better to grind up the activated carbon into smaller pieces (if you want to purify air)

    The carbon keeps seeping through my screen. I even put 2 screens on, and it still had bits and pieces seep through. Are you using some specific type of window screen? I'm using a fiberglass type bought at Home Depot.

      hi there. some of the smaller bits get thru from time to time (even happens on the commercially sold units). once the few smaller ones go thru you should be okay. i just use regular screen. maybe buy activated carbon that is a little coarser. i think they sell a pellet version too that i've read is good for water purification

    I need to hook up to a garden hose. Is this threaded to screw on garden hose?

    • @desertsun02

      hi there. no threads on this one, but it's super easy to add garden hose threads. (they sell pvc garden hose connector piece that you can attach to one end).

    • @desertsun02
      @desertsun02  ปีที่แล้ว

      hi. yes, absolutely. this will remove TDS (total dissolved solids) in a big way. for those that don't know TDS is the sediment or junk in the water.

    • @desertsun02
      @desertsun02  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      hi there. best (cheapest) place to buy activated carbon is walmart. they sell a small jug of it for $6.00 (in the fish/aquarium supplies area).

    • @PassionatLee
      @PassionatLee 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Use the activate carbon from wherever you get it (Aquarium shop or big stores etc) rinse (wash it) yourself in water to get rid of the black that comes off the carbon as well as any debris that may be in with it. :) (The Debris generally floats to the top.)
      [[ All carbon filters have black that comes out with the water at first, even the store bought ones have this. Soooo, rinse it off and Bob's your Uncle ;) ]]
